Named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental component in the modern language understanding pipeline. Public NER resources such as annotated data and model services are available in many domains. However, given a particular downstream application, there is often no single NER resource that supports all the desired entity types, so users must leverage multiple resources with different tag sets. This paper presents a marginal distillation (MARDI) approach for training a unified NER model from resources with disjoint or heterogeneous tag sets. In contrast to recent works, MARDI merely requires access to pre-trained models rather than the original training datasets. This flexibility makes it easier to work with sensitive domains like healthcare and finance. Furthermore, our approach is general enough to integrate with different NER architectures, including local models (e.g., BiLSTM) and global models (e.g., CRF). Experiments on two benchmark datasets show that MARDI performs on par with a strong marginal CRF baseline, while being more flexible in the form of required NER resources. MARDI also sets a new state of the art on the progressive NER task. MARDI significantly outperforms the start-of-the-art model on the task of progressive NER.
Contextualized embeddings, which capture appropriate word meaning depending on context, have recently been proposed. We evaluate two meth ods for precomputing such embeddings, BERT and Flair, on four Czech text processing tasks: part-of-speech (POS) tagging, lemmatization, dependency pars ing and named entity recognition (NER). The first three tasks, POS tagging, lemmatization and dependency parsing, are evaluated on two corpora: the Prague Dependency Treebank 3.5 and the Universal Dependencies 2.3. The named entity recognition (NER) is evaluated on the Czech Named Entity Corpus 1.1 and 2.0. W…

This paper presents a neural architecture for Vietnamese sequence labeling tasks including part-of-speech (POS) tagging and named entity recognition (NER). We applied the model described in \cite{lample-EtAl:2016:N16-1} that is a combination of bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory and Conditional Random Fields, which rely on two sources of information about words: character-based word representations learned from the supervised corpus and pre-trained word embeddings learned from other unannotated corpora. Experiments on benchmark datasets show that this work achieves state-of-the-art performan…
Current State-of-the-Art models in Named Entity Recognition (NER) are neural models with a Conditional Random Field (CRF) as the final network layer, and pre-trained "contextual embeddings". The CRF layer is used to facilitate global coherence between labels, and the contextual embeddings provide a better representation of words in context. However, both of these improvements come at a high computational cost. In this work, we explore two simple techniques that substantially improve NER performance over a strong baseline with negligible cost. First, we use multiple pre-trained embeddings as wo…

The goal in the NER task is to classify proper nouns of a text into classes such as person, location, and organization. This is an important preprocessing step in many NLP tasks such as question-answering and summarization. Although many research studies have been conducted in this area in English and the state-of-the-art NER systems have reached performances of higher than 90 percent in terms of F1 measure, there are very few research studies for this task in Persian. One of the main important causes of this may be the lack of a standard Persian NER dataset to train and test NER systems. In t…

So far, discontinuous named entity recognition (NER) has received increasing research attention and many related methods have surged such as hypergraph-based methods, span-based methods, and sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) methods, etc. However, these methods more or less suffer from some problems such as decoding ambiguity and efficiency, which limit their performance. Recently, grid-tagging methods, which benefit from the flexible design of tagging systems and model architectures, have shown superiority to adapt for various information extraction tasks. In this paper, we follow the line of su…

Everyone makes mistakes. So do human annotators when curating labels for named entity recognition (NER). Such label mistakes might hurt model training and interfere model comparison. In this study, we dive deep into one of the widely-adopted NER benchmark datasets, CoNLL03 NER. We are able to identify label mistakes in about 5.38% test sentences, which is a significant ratio considering that the state-of-the-art test F1 score is already around 93%. Therefore, we manually correct these label mistakes and form a cleaner test set. Our re-evaluation of popular models on this corrected test set lea…
Previous studies have shown that linguistic features of a word such as possession, genitive or other grammatical cases can be employed in word representations of a named entity recognition (NER) tagger to improve the performance for morphologically rich languages. However, these taggers require external morphological disambiguation (MD) tools to function which are hard to obtain or non-existent for many languages. In this work, we propose a model which alleviates the need for such disambiguators by jointly learning NER and MD taggers in languages for which one can provide a list of candidate m…

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a foundational NLP task that aims to provide class labels like Person, Location, Organisation, Time, and Number to words in free text. Named Entities can also be multi-word expressions where the additional I-O-B annotation information helps label them during the NER annotation process. While English and European languages have considerable annotated data for the NER task, Indian languages lack on that front -- both in terms of quantity and following annotation standards. This paper releases a significantly sized standard-abiding Hindi NER dataset containing 10…

Named entity recognition (NER) models generally perform poorly when large training datasets are unavailable for low-resource domains. Recently, pre-training a large-scale language model has become a promising direction for coping with the data scarcity issue. However, the underlying discrepancies between the language modeling and NER task could limit the models' performance, and pre-training for the NER task has rarely been studied since the collected NER datasets are generally small or large but with low quality. In this paper, we construct a massive NER corpus with a relatively high quality,…
Multimodal named entity recognition (MNER) requires to bridge the gap between language understanding and visual context. While many multimodal neural techniques have been proposed to incorporate images into the MNER task, the model's ability to leverage multimodal interactions remains poorly understood. In this work, we conduct in-depth analyses of existing multimodal fusion techniques from different perspectives and describe the scenarios where adding information from the image does not always boost performance. We also study the use of captions as a way to enrich the context for MNER. Experi…
Span-based joint extraction simultaneously conducts named entity recognition (NER) and relation extraction (RE) in text span form. Recent studies have shown that token labels can convey crucial task-specific information and enrich token semantics. However, as far as we know, due to completely abstain from sequence tagging mechanism, all prior span-based work fails to use token label in-formation. To solve this problem, we pro-pose Sequence Tagging enhanced Span-based Network (STSN), a span-based joint extrac-tion network that is enhanced by token BIO label information derived from sequence tag…
In this report, we describe our participant named-entity recognition system at VLSP 2018 evaluation campaign. We formalized the task as a sequence labeling problem using BIO encoding scheme. We applied a feature-based model which combines word, word-shape features, Brown-cluster-based features, and word-embedding-based features. We compare several methods to deal with nested entities in the dataset. We showed that combining tags of entities at all levels for training a sequence labeling model (joint-tag model) improved the accuracy of nested named-entity recognition.
Social media data such as Twitter messages ("tweets") pose a particular challenge to NLP systems because of their short, noisy, and colloquial nature. Tasks such as Named Entity Recognition (NER) and syntactic parsing require highly domain-matched training data for good performance. To date, there is no complete training corpus for both NER and syntactic analysis (e.g., part of speech tagging, dependency parsing) of tweets. While there are some publicly available annotated NLP datasets of tweets, they are only designed for individual tasks. In this study, we aim to create Tweebank-NER, an Engl…

We propose a new Named entity recognition (NER) method to effectively make use of the results of Part-of-speech (POS) tagging, Chinese word segmentation (CWS) and parsing while avoiding NER error caused by POS tagging error. This paper first uses Stanford natural language process (NLP) tool to annotate large-scale untagged data so as to reduce the dependence on the tagged data; then a new NLP model, g-BERT model, is designed to compress Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) model in order to reduce calculation quantity; finally, the model is evaluated based on Chinese …
Existing neural models usually predict the tag of the current token independent of the neighboring tags. The popular LSTM-CRF model considers the tag dependencies between every two consecutive tags. However, it is hard for existing neural models to take longer distance dependencies of tags into consideration. The scalability is mainly limited by the complex model structures and the cost of dynamic programming during training. In our work, we first design a new model called "high order LSTM" to predict multiple tags for the current token which contains not only the current tag but also the prev…

Named Entity Recognition (NER), search, classification and tagging of names and name like frequent informational elements in texts, has become a standard information extraction procedure for textual data. NER has been applied to many types of texts and different types of entities: newspapers, fiction, historical records, persons, locations, chemical compounds, protein families, animals etc. In general a NER system's performance is genre and domain dependent and also used entity categories vary (Nadeau and Sekine, 2007). The most general set of named entities is usually some version of three pa…

Unlike widely used Named Entity Recognition (NER) data sets in generic domains, biomedical NER data sets often contain mentions consisting of discontinuous spans. Conventional sequence tagging techniques encode Markov assumptions that are efficient but preclude recovery of these mentions. We propose a simple, effective transition-based model with generic neural encoding for discontinuous NER. Through extensive experiments on three biomedical data sets, we show that our model can effectively recognize discontinuous mentions without sacrificing the accuracy on continuous mentions.

Experiments on Vietnamese benchmark datasets show that PhoNLP produces state-of-the-art results, outperforming a single-task learning approach that fine-tunes the pre-trained Vietnamese language model PhoBERT (Nguyen and Nguyen, 2020) for each task independently. We publicly release PhoNLP as an open-source toolkit under the Apache License 2.0. Although we specify PhoNLP for Vietnamese, our PhoNLP training and evaluation com…
This paper investigates the problem of Named Entity Recognition (NER) for extreme low-resource languages with only a few hundred tagged data samples. NER is a fundamental task in Natural Language Processing (NLP). A critical driver accelerating NER systems' progress is the existence of large-scale language corpora that enable NER systems to achieve outstanding performance in languages such as English and French with abundant training data. However, NER for low-resource languages remains relatively unexplored. In this paper, we introduce Mask Augmented Named Entity Recognition (MANER), a new me…
Span-based joint extraction simultaneously conducts named entity recognition (NER) and relation extraction (RE) in text span form. However, since previous span-based models rely on span-level classifications, they cannot benefit from token-level label information, which has been proven advantageous for the task. In this paper, we propose a Sequence Tagging augmented Span-based Network (STSN), a span-based joint model that can make use of token-level label information. In STSN, we construct a core neural architecture by deep stacking multiple attention layers, each of which consists of three ba…
Named Entity Recognition (NER) from speech is among Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) tasks, aiming to extract semantic information from the speech signal. NER from speech is usually made through a two-step pipeline that consists of (1) processing the audio using an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system and (2) applying an NER tagger to the ASR outputs. Recent works have shown the capability of the End-to-End (E2E) approach for NER from English and French speech, which is essentially entity-aware ASR. However, due to the many homophones and polyphones that exist in Chinese, NER from Chin…

Named entity recognition, and other information extraction tasks, frequently use linguistic features such as part of speech tags or chunkings. For languages where word boundaries are not readily identified in text, word segmentation is a key first step to generating features for an NER system. While using word boundary tags as features are helpful, the signals that aid in identifying these boundaries may provide richer information for an NER system. New state-of-the-art word segmentation systems use neural models to learn representations for predicting word boundaries. We show that these same …
Capitalization is an important feature in many NLP tasks such as Named Entity Recognition (NER) or Part of Speech Tagging (POS). We are trying to reproduce results of paper which shows how to mitigate a significant performance drop when casing is mismatched between training and testing data. In particular we show that lowercasing 50% of the dataset provides the best performance, matching the claims of the original paper. We also show that we got slightly lower performance in almost all experiments we have tried to reproduce, suggesting that there might be some hidden factors impacting our perf…

Recent advances in deep neural models allow us to build reliable named entity recognition (NER) systems without handcrafting features. However, such methods require large amounts of manually-labeled training data. There have been efforts on replacing human annotations with distant supervision (in conjunction with external dictionaries), but the generated noisy labels pose significant challenges on learning effective neural models. Here we propose two neural models to suit noisy distant supervision from the dictionary. First, under the traditional sequence labeling framework, we propose a revis…
The growth rate in the amount of biomedical documents is staggering. Unlocking information trapped in these documents can enable researchers and practitioners to operate confidently in the information world. Biomedical NER, the task of recognising biomedical names, is usually employed as the first step of the NLP pipeline. Standard NER models, based on sequence tagging technique, are good at recognising short entity mentions in the generic domain. However, there are several open challenges of applying these models to recognise biomedical names: 1) Biomedical names may contain complex inner str…

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a crucial upstream task in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Traditional tag scheme approaches offer a single recognition that does not meet the needs of many downstream tasks such as coreference resolution. Meanwhile, Tag scheme approaches ignore the continuity of entities. Inspired by one-stage object detection models in computer vision (CV), this paper proposes a new no-tag scheme, the Whole-Aware Detection, which makes NER an object detection task. Meanwhile, this paper presents a novel model, Entity Candidate Network (ECNet), and a specific convolution n…
The availability of large amounts of computer-readable textual data and hardware that can process the data has shifted the focus of knowledge projects towards deep learning architecture. Natural Language Processing, particularly the task of Named Entity Recognition is no exception. The bulk of the learning methods that have produced state-of-the-art results have changed the deep learning model, the training method used, the training data itself or the encoding of the output of the NER system. In this paper, we review significant learning methods that have been employed for NER in the recent pa…

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is the task of identifying spans that represent entities in sentences. Whether the entity spans are nested or discontinuous, the NER task can be categorized into the flat NER, nested NER, and discontinuous NER subtasks. These subtasks have been mainly solved by the token-level sequence labelling or span-level classification. However, these solutions can hardly tackle the three kinds of NER subtasks concurrently. To that end, we propose to formulate the NER subtasks as an entity span sequence generation task, which can be solved by a unified sequence-to-sequence (…
Research on overlapped and discontinuous named entity recognition (NER) has received increasing attention. The majority of previous work focuses on either overlapped or discontinuous entities. In this paper, we propose a novel span-based model that can recognize both overlapped and discontinuous entities jointly. The model includes two major steps. First, entity fragments are recognized by traversing over all possible text spans, thus, overlapped entities can be recognized. Second, we perform relation classification to judge whether a given pair of entity fragments to be overlapping or success…

Current state-of-the-art models for named entity recognition (NER) are neural models with a conditional random field (CRF) as the final layer. Entities are represented as per-token labels with a special structure in order to decode them into spans. Current work eschews prior knowledge of how the span encoding scheme works and relies on the CRF learning which transitions are illegal and which are not to facilitate global coherence. We find that by constraining the output to suppress illegal transitions we can train a tagger with a cross-entropy loss twice as fast as a CRF with differences in F1…
Named Entity Recognition (NER) or the extraction of concepts from clinical text is the task of identifying entities in text and slotting them into categories such as problems, treatments, tests, clinical departments, occurrences (such as admission and discharge) and others. NER forms a critical component of processing and leveraging unstructured data from Electronic Health Records (EHR). While identifying the spans and categories of concepts is itself a challenging task, these entities could also have attributes such as negation that pivot their meanings implied to the consumers of the named e…

This paper presents a novel framework, MGNER, for Multi-Grained Named Entity Recognition where multiple entities or entity mentions in a sentence could be non-overlapping or totally nested. Different from traditional approaches regarding NER as a sequential labeling task and annotate entities consecutively, MGNER detects and recognizes entities on multiple granularities: it is able to recognize named entities without explicitly assuming non-overlapping or totally nested structures. MGNER consists of a Detector that examines all possible word segments and a Classifier that categorizes entities.…

Most Named Entity Recognition (NER) systems use additional features like part-of-speech (POS) tags, shallow parsing, gazetteers, etc. Such kind of information requires external knowledge like unlabeled texts and trained taggers. Adding these features to NER systems have been shown to have a positive impact. However, sometimes creating gazetteers or taggers can take a lot of time and may require extensive data cleaning. In this paper for Chinese NER systems, we do not use these traditional features but we use lexicographic features of Chinese characters. Chinese characters are composed of graph…
