We prove that the class of $(K_t,sP_1+P_5)$-free graphs has bounded mim-width for every $s\geq 0$ and $t\geq 1$, and that there is a polynomial-time algorithm that, given a graph in the class, computes a branch decomposition of constant mim-width. A large number of \NP-complete graph problems become polynomial-time solvable on graph classes with bounded mim-width and for which a branch decomposition is quickly computable. The $k$-Colouring problem is an example of such a problem. For this problem, we may assume that the input graph is $K_{k+1}$-free. Then, as a consequence of our result, we obtain a new proof for the known result that for every fixed $k\geq 1$ and $s\geq 0$, $k$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1+P_5)$-free graphs. In fact, our findings show that the underlying reason for this polynomial-time algorithm is that the class has bounded mim-width.
A colouring of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a mapping $c\colon V\to \{1,2,\ldots\}$ such that $c(u)\neq c(v)$ for every two adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. The {\sc List $k$-Colouring} problem is to decide whether a graph $G=(V,E)$ with a list $L(u)\subseteq \{1,\ldots,k\}$ for each $u\in V$ has a colouring $c$ such that $c(u)\in L(u)$ for every $u\in V$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices and let $K_{1,s}^1$ be the graph obtained from the $(s+1)$-vertex star $K_{1,s}$ by subdividing each of its edges exactly once.Recently, Chudnovsky, Spirkl and Zhong (DM 2020) proved that List $3$-Colouring…
The complexity of {\sc Colouring} is fully understood for $H$-free graphs, but there are still major complexity gaps if two induced subgraphs $H_1$ and $H_2$ are forbidden. Let $H_1$ be the $s$-vertex cycle $C_s$ and $H_2$ be the $t$-vertex path $P_t$. We show that {\sc Colouring} is polynomial-time solvable for $s=4$ and $t\leq 6$, strengthening several known results. Our main approach is to initiate a study into the boundedness of the clique-width of atoms (graphs with no clique cutset) of a hereditary graph class. We first show that the classifications of boundedness of clique-width of $H$-…
Clique-width is one of the graph complexity measures leading to polynomial special-case algorithms for generally NP-complete problems, e.g. graph colourability. The best two currently known algorithms for verifying c-colourability of graphs represented as clique-width terms are optimised towards two different extreme cases, a constant number of colours and a very large number of colours. We present a way to unify these approaches in a single relatively simple algorithm that achieves the state of the art complexity in both cases. The unified algorithm also provides a speed-up for a large number…
A large number of NP-hard graph problems become polynomial-time solvable on graph classes where the mim-width is bounded and quickly computable. Hence, when solving such problems on special graph classes, it is helpful to know whether the graph class under consideration has bounded mim-width. We first extend the toolkit for proving (un)boundedness of mim-width of graph classes. This enables us to initiate a systematic study into bounding mim-width from the perspective of hereditary graph classes. For a given graph $H$, the class of $H$-free graphs has bounded mim-width if and only if it has bo…
Clique-width is a well-studied graph parameter owing to its use in understanding algorithmic tractability: if the clique-width of a graph class ${\cal G}$ is bounded by a constant, a wide range of problems that are NP-complete in general can be shown to be polynomial-time solvable on ${\cal G}$. For this reason, the boundedness or unboundedness of clique-width has been investigated and determined for many graph classes. We survey these results for hereditary graph classes, which are the graph classes closed under taking induced subgraphs. We then discuss the algorithmic consequences of these r…
We complement the recent algorithmic result that Feedback Vertex Set is XP-time solvable parameterized by the mim-width of a given branch decomposition of the input graph [3] by showing that the problem is W[1]-hard in this parameterization. The hardness holds even for linear mim-width, as well as for H-graphs, where the parameter is the number of edges in H. To obtain this result, we adapt a reduction due to Fomin, Golovach and Raymond [2], following the same line of reasoning but adding a new gadget.
We investigate new graph classes of bounded mim-width, strictly extending interval graphs and permutation graphs. The graphs $K_t \boxminus K_t$ and $K_t \boxminus S_t$ are graphs obtained from the disjoint union of two cliques of size $t$, and one clique of size $t$ and one independent set of size $t$ respectively, by adding a perfect matching. We prove that : (1) interval graphs are $(K_3\boxminus S_3)$-free chordal graphs; and $(K_t\boxminus S_t)$-free chordal graphs have mim-width at most $t-1$, (2) permutation graphs are $(K_3\boxminus K_3)$-free co-comparability graphs; and $(K_t\boxminu…
We give a first polynomial-time algorithm for (Weighted) Feedback Vertex Set on graphs of bounded maximum induced matching width (mim-width). Explicitly, given a branch decomposition of mim-width $w$, we give an $n^{\mathcal{O}(w)}$-time algorithm that solves Feedback Vertex Set. This provides a unified algorithm for many well-known classes, such as Interval graphs and Permutation graphs, and furthermore, it gives the first polynomial-time algorithms for other classes of bounded mim-width, such as Circular Permutation and Circular $k$-Trapezoid graphs for fixed $k$. In all these classes the de…
We give the first polynomial-time algorithms on graphs of bounded maximum induced matching width (mim-width) for problems that are not locally checkable. In particular, we give $n^{\mathcal{O}(w)}$-time algorithms on graphs of mim-width at most $w$, when given a decomposition, for the following problems: Longest Induced Path, Induced Disjoint Paths and $H$-Induced Topological Minor for fixed $H$. Our results imply that the following graph classes have polynomial-time algorithms for these three problems: Interval and Bi-Interval graphs, Circular Arc, Permutation and Circular Permutation graphs,…
Algorithms for computing or approximating optimal decompositions for decompositional parameters such as treewidth or clique-width have so far traditionally been tailored to specific width parameters. Moreover, for mim-width, no efficient algorithms for computing good decompositions were known, even under highly restrictive parameterizations. In this work we identify F-branchwidth as a class of generic decompositional parameters that can capture mim-width, treewidth, clique-width as well as other measures. We show that while there is an infinite number of F-branchwidth parameters, only a handfu…
The linear induced matching width (LMIM-width) of a graph is a width parameter defined by using the notion of branch-decompositions of a set function on ternary trees. In this paper we study output-polynomial enumeration algorithms on graphs of bounded LMIM-width and graphs of bounded local LMIM-width. In particular, we show that all 1-minimal and all 1-maximal (σ,ρ)-dominating sets, and hence all minimal dominating sets, of graphs of bounded LMIM-width can be enumerated with polynomial (linear) delay using polynomial space. Furthermore, we show that all minimal dominating sets of a unit squar…
An intersection digraph is a digraph where every vertex $v$ is represented by an ordered pair $(S_v, T_v)$ of sets such that there is an edge from $v$ to $w$ if and only if $S_v$ and $T_w$ intersect. An intersection digraph is reflexive if $S_v\cap T_v\neq \emptyset$ for every vertex $v$. Compared to well-known undirected intersection graphs like interval graphs and permutation graphs, not many algorithmic applications on intersection digraphs have been developed. Motivated by the successful story on algorithmic applications of intersection graphs using a graph width parameter called mim-width…
We introduce a logic called distance neighborhood logic with acyclicity and connectivity constraints ($\mathsf{A\&C~DN}$ for short) which extends existential $\mathsf{MSO_1}$ with predicates for querying neighborhoods of vertex sets and for verifying connectivity and acyclicity of vertex sets in various powers of a graph. Building upon [Bergougnoux and Kanté, ESA 2019; SIDMA 2021], we show that the model checking problem for every fixed $\mathsf{A\&C~DN}$ formula is solvable in $n^{O(w)}$ time when the input graph is given together with a branch decomposition of mim-width $w$. Nearly all probl…
The two weighted graph problems Node Multiway Cut (NMC) and Subset Feedback Vertex Set (SFVS) both ask for a vertex set of minimum total weight, that for NMC disconnects a given set of terminals, and for SFVS intersects all cycles containing a vertex of a given set. We design a meta-algorithm that allows to solve both problems in time $2^{O(rw^3)}\cdot n^{4}$, $2^{O(q^2\log(q))}\cdot n^{4}$, and $n^{O(k^2)}$ where $rw$ is the rank-width, $q$ the $\mathbb{Q}$-rank-width, and $k$ the mim-width of a given decomposition. This answers in the affirmative an open question raised by Jaffke et al. (Alg…
The complexity of (unbounded-arity) Max-CSPs under structural restrictions is poorly understood. The two most general hypergraph properties known to ensure tractability of Max-CSPs, $β$-acyclicity and bounded (incidence) MIM-width, are incomparable and lead to very different algorithms. We introduce the framework of point decompositions for hypergraphs and use it to derive a new sufficient condition for the tractability of (structurally restricted) Max-CSPs, which generalises both bounded MIM-width and \b{eta}-acyclicity. On the way, we give a new characterisation of bounded MIM-width and disc…
We introduce the concept of low rank-width colorings, generalising the notion of low tree-depth colorings introduced by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez in [Grad and classes with bounded expansion I. Decompositions. EJC, 2008]. We say that a class $\mathcal{C}$ of graphs admits low rank-width colourings if there exist functions $N\colon \mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}$ and $Q\colon \mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}$ such that for all $p\in \mathbb{N}$, every graph $G\in \mathcal{C}$ can be vertex colored with at most $N(p)$ colors such that the union of any $i\leq p$ color classes induces a subgrap…
In this paper we present a new width measure for a tree decomposition, minor-matching hypertree width, $μ\text{-}tw$, for graphs and hypergraphs, such that bounding the width guarantees that set of maximal independent sets has a polynomially-sized restriction to each decomposition bag. The relaxed conditions of the decomposition allow a much wider class of graphs and hypergraphs of bounded width compared to other tree decompositions. We show that, for fixed $k$, there are $2^{(1 - \frac1k + o(1)){n \choose 2}}$ $n$-vertex graphs of minor-matching hypertree width at most $k$. A number of proble…

For a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is an $H$-graph if it is an intersection graph of connected subgraphs of some subdivision of $H$. $H$-graphs naturally generalize several important graph classes like interval or circular-arc graph. This class was introduced in the early 1990s by Bíró, Hujter, and Tuza. Recently, Chaplick et al. initiated the algorithmic study of $H$-graphs by showing that a number of fundamental optimization problems are solvable in polynomial time on $H$-graphs. We extend and complement these algorithmic findings in several directions. First we show that for every fixed $H$, the …
