Person re-identification aims at identifying a certain pedestrian across non-overlapping camera networks. Video-based re-identification approaches have gained significant attention recently, expanding image-based approaches by learning features from multiple frames. In this work, we propose a novel Co-Saliency Spatio-Temporal Interaction Network (CSTNet) for person re-identification in videos. It captures the common salient foreground regions among video frames and explores the spatial-temporal long-range context interdependency from such regions, towards learning discriminative pedestrian representation. Specifically, multiple co-saliency learning modules within CSTNet are designed to utilize the correlated information across video frames to extract the salient features from the task-relevant regions and suppress background interference. Moreover, multiple spatialtemporal interaction modules within CSTNet are proposed, which exploit the spatial and temporal long-range context interdependencies on such features and spatial-temporal information correlation, to enhance feature representation. Extensive experiments on two benchmarks have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Human eyes can recognize person identities based on small salient regions, i.e. human saliency is distinctive and reliable in pedestrian matching across disjoint camera views. However, such valuable information is often hidden when computing similarities of pedestrian images with existing approaches. Inspired by our user study result of human perception on human saliency, we propose a novel perspective for person re-identification based on learning human saliency and matching saliency distribution. The proposed saliency learning and matching framework consists of four steps: (1) To handle misa…

Given a video or an image of a person acquired from a camera, person re-identification is the process of retrieving all instances of the same person from videos or images taken from a different camera with non-overlapping view. This task has applications in various fields, such as surveillance, forensics, robotics, multimedia. In this paper, we present a novel framework, named Saliency-Semantic Parsing Re-Identification (SSP-ReID), for taking advantage of the capabilities of both clues: saliency and semantic parsing maps, to guide a backbone convolutional neural network (CNN) to learn compleme…

This paper proposes a Temporal Complementary Learning Network that extracts complementary features of consecutive video frames for video person re-identification. Firstly, we introduce a Temporal Saliency Erasing (TSE) module including a saliency erasing operation and a series of ordered learners. Specifically, for a specific frame of a video, the saliency erasing operation drives the specific learner to mine new and complementary parts by erasing the parts activated by previous frames. Such that the diverse visual features can be discovered for consecutive frames and finally form an integral …
Person re-identification (re-id) has made great progress in recent years, but occlusion is still a challenging problem which significantly degenerates the identification performance. In this paper, we design a teacher-student learning framework to learn an occlusion-robust model from the full-body person domain to the occluded person domain. Notably, the teacher network only uses large-scale full-body person data to simulate the learning process of occluded person re-id. Based on the teacher network, the student network then trains a better model by using inadequate real-world occluded person …

Existing methods for person re-identification (Re-ID) are mostly based on supervised learning which requires numerous manually labeled samples across all camera views for training. Such a paradigm suffers the scalability issue since in real-world Re-ID application, it is difficult to exhaustively label abundant identities over multiple disjoint camera views. To this end, we propose a progressive deep learning method for unsupervised person Re-ID in the wild by Tracklet Association with Spatio-Temporal Regularization (TASTR). In our approach, we first collect tracklet data within each camera by…

Recently, the Transformer module has been transplanted from natural language processing to computer vision. This paper applies the Transformer to video-based person re-identification, where the key issue is to extract the discriminative information from a tracklet. We show that, despite the strong learning ability, the vanilla Transformer suffers from an increased risk of over-fitting, arguably due to a large number of attention parameters and insufficient training data. To solve this problem, we propose a novel pipeline where the model is pre-trained on a set of synthesized video data and the…
Person re-identification (re-ID) in the scenario with large spatial and temporal spans has not been fully explored. This is partially because that, existing benchmark datasets were mainly collected with limited spatial and temporal ranges, e.g., using videos recorded in a few days by cameras in a specific region of the campus. Such limited spatial and temporal ranges make it hard to simulate the difficulties of person re-ID in real scenarios. In this work, we contribute a novel Large-scale Spatio-Temporal LaST person re-ID dataset, including 10,862 identities with more than 228k images. Compar…

We propose a computational model to estimate a person's attended awareness of their environment. We define attended awareness to be those parts of a potentially dynamic scene which a person has attended to in recent history and which they are still likely to be physically aware of. Our model takes as input scene information in the form of a video and noisy gaze estimates, and outputs visual saliency, a refined gaze estimate, and an estimate of the person's attended awareness. In order to test our model, we capture a new dataset with a high-precision gaze tracker including 24.5 hours of gaze se…

Video-based person re-identification matches video clips of people across non-overlapping cameras. Most existing methods tackle this problem by encoding each video frame in its entirety and computing an aggregate representation across all frames. In practice, people are often partially occluded, which can corrupt the extracted features. Instead, we propose a new spatiotemporal attention model that automatically discovers a diverse set of distinctive body parts. This allows useful information to be extracted from all frames without succumbing to occlusions and misalignments. The network learns …
Visual saliency, which predicts regions in the field of view that draw the most visual attention, has attracted a lot of interest from researchers. It has already been used in several vision tasks, e.g., image classification, object detection, foreground segmentation. Recently, the spectrum analysis based visual saliency approach has attracted a lot of interest due to its simplicity and good performance, where the phase information of the image is used to construct the saliency map. In this paper, we propose a new approach for detecting spatiotemporal visual saliency based on the phase spectru…
Computational saliency models for still images have gained significant popularity in recent years. Saliency prediction from videos, on the other hand, has received relatively little interest from the community. Motivated by this, in this work, we study the use of deep learning for dynamic saliency prediction and propose the so-called spatio-temporal saliency networks. The key to our models is the architecture of two-stream networks where we investigate different fusion mechanisms to integrate spatial and temporal information. We evaluate our models on the DIEM and UCF-Sports datasets and prese…
Typical person re-identification frameworks search for k best matches in a gallery of images that are often collected in varying conditions. The gallery may contain image sequences when re-identification is done on videos. However, such a process is time consuming as re-identification has to be carried out multiple times. In this paper, we extract spatio-temporal sequences of frames (referred to as tubes) of moving persons and apply a multi-stage processing to match a given query tube with a gallery of stored tubes recorded through other cameras. Initially, we apply a binary classifier to remo…
As an important and challenging problem in computer vision, video saliency detection is typically cast as a spatiotemporal context modeling problem over consecutive frames. As a result, a key issue in video saliency detection is how to effectively capture the intrinsical properties of atomic video structures as well as their associated contextual interactions along the spatial and temporal dimensions. Motivated by this observation, we propose a graph-theoretic video saliency detection approach based on adaptive video structure discovery, which is carried out within a spatiotemporal atomic grap…

To alleviate these problems, we propose Spatio-Temporal Representation Factorization (STRF), a flexible new computational unit that can be used in conjunction with most existing 3D convolutional neural network architectures for re-ID. However, in most pedestrian sets, there always are some outstanding persons who are relatively easy to re-identify. Inspired by the existence of such data division, we propose a novel key person aided person re-identification framework based on the re-defined partially ordered pedestrian sets. We also propose new SpatioTemporal Conditional Random Field (STCRF) to compute saliency from STD features. Systems based on bag-of-words models from image features collected at maxima of sparse interest point operators have been used successfully for both computer visual object and action recognition tasks. While the sparse, interest-point based approach to recognition is not inconsistent with visual processing in biological systems that operate in `saccade and fixate' regimes, the methodology and emphasis in the human and the computer vision communities remains sharply distinct. Here, we make three contributions aiming to bridge this gap. First, we complement existing state-of-the art large scale …
