We experimentally demonstrate a dipolar polariton based electric field sensor. We tune and optimize the sensitivity of the sensor by varying the dipole moment of polaritons. We show polariton interactions play an important role in determining the conditions for optimal electric field sensing, and achieve a sensitivity of 0.12 V-m$^{-1}$-Hz$^{-0.5}$. Finally we apply the sensor to illustrate that excitation of polaritons modify the electric field in a spatial region much larger than the optical excitation spot.
The possibility of constructing a surface exciton polariton (SEP) based sensor at room temperature is explored. The proposed SEP sensor is based on the Kretschmann-Raether configuration of conventional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, where the metal thin film was replaced by the J-aggregate cyanine dye film. The excitation of SEP results in a strong electric field at the interface of TDBC and analyte, and exponentially decaying into the analyte, which is sensitive to the refractive index variations of analyte. The sensitivity of 118.1818 $^\circ/\text{RIU}$ (140.4286 $^\circ/\text{RIU}…
Integrated electro-optical switches are essential as one of the fundamental elements in the development of modern optoelectronics. As an architecture for photonic systems, exciton polaritons, that are hybrid bosonic quasiparticles that possess unique properties derived from both excitons and photons, have shown much promise. For this system, we demonstrate a significant improvement of emitted intensity and condensation threshold by applying an electric field to a microcavity filled with an organic microbelt. Our theoretical investigations indicate that the electric field makes the excitons dip…
The artificial gauge field for electrically neutral exciton polaritons devoid from the polarization degree of freedom can be synthesized by means of applying crossed electric and magnetic fields. The appearance of the gauge potential can be ascribed to the motional (magneto-electric) Stark effect which is responsible for the presence of a linear-in-momentum contribution to the exciton kinetic energy. We study the interplay of this phenomenon with the competing effect which arises from the Rabi-splitting renormalization due the reduction of the electron-hole overlap for a moving exciton. Accoun…
We present a microscopic theory for the description of the bias-controlled operation of an exciton-polariton-based heterostructure, in particular, the polariton laser. Combining together the Poisson equations for the scalar electric potential and Fermi quasi-energies of electrons and holes in a semiconductor heterostructure, the Boltzmann equation for the incoherent excitonic reservoir and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the exciton-polariton mean field, we simulate the dynamics of the system minimising the number of free parameters and for the first time build a theoretical threshold charac…

With the unique possibilities for controlling light in nanoscale devices, graphene plasmonics has opened new perspectives to the nanophotonics community with potential applications in metamaterials, modulators, photodetectors, and sensors. This paper briefly reviews the recent exciting progress in graphene plasmonics. We begin with a general description for optical properties of graphene, particularly focusing on the dispersion of graphene-plasmon polaritons. The dispersion relation of graphene-plasmon polaritons of spatially extended graphene is expressed in terms of the local response limit …
We present a precise calculation of spatially-indirect exciton states in semiconductor coupled quantum wells and polaritons formed from their coupling to the optical mode of a microcavity. We include the presence of electric and magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the quantum well plane. Our model predicts the existence of polaritons which are in the strong coupling regime and at the same time possess a large static dipole moment. We demonstrate, in particular, that a magnetic field can compensate for the reduction in light-matter coupling that occurs when an electric field impresses a di…
Polaritons in metals, semimetals, semiconductors, and polar insulators, with their extreme confinement of electromagnetic energy, provide many promising opportunities for enhancing typically weak light-matter interactions such as multipolar radiation, multiphoton spontaneous emission, Raman scattering, and material nonlinearities. These highly confined polaritons are quasi-electrostatic in nature, with most of their energy residing in the electric field. As a result, these "electric" polaritons are far from optimized for enhancing emission of a magnetic nature, such as spin relaxation, which i…
It is widely assumed that photons cannot be manipulated using electric or magnetic fields. Even though hybridization of photons with electronic polarization to form exciton-polaritons has paved the way to a number of ground-breaking experiments in semiconductor microcavities, the neutral bosonic nature of these quasiparticles has severely limited their response to external gauge fields. Here, we demonstrate polariton acceleration by external electric and magnetic fields in the presence of nonperturbative coupling between polaritons and itinerant electrons, leading to formation of new quasipart…
Transverse-electric (TE) surface plasmon polaritons are unique eigenmodes of a homogeneous graphene layer that are tunable with the chemical potential and temperature. However, as their dispersion curve spectrally lies just below the light line, they cannot be resonantly excited by an externally incident wave. Here, we propose a way of exciting the TE modes and tuning their peaks in the transmission by introducing a one-dimensional graphene grating. Using the scattering-matrix formalism, we show that periodic modulations of graphene make the transmission more pronounced, potentially allowing f…
We show that with a system of electrically-gated wide quantum wells embedded inside a simple dielectric waveguide structure, it is possible to excite, control, and observe waveguided exciton polaritons that carry an electric dipole moment. We demonstrate that the energy of the propagating dipolariton can be easily tuned using local electrical gates, that their excitation and extraction can be easily done using simple evaporated metal gratings, and that the dipolar interactions between polaritons and between polaritons and excitons can also be controlled by the applied electric fields. This sys…
The dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons in graphene that includes optical losses is often obtained for complex wave vectors while the frequencies are assumed to be real. This approach, however, is not suitable for describing the temporal dynamics of optical excitations and the spectral properties of graphene. Here, we propose an alternative approach that calculates the dispersion relation in the complex frequency and real wave vector space. This approach provides a clearer insight into the optical properties of a graphene layer and allows us to find the surface plasmon modes of a…
Based on the studies of propagation of an exciton-polariton condensate in a patterned optical microcavity with an embedded graphene layer, we propose a design of a Y-shaped electrically-controlled optical switch. The polaritons are driven by a time-independent force due to the microcavity wedge shape and by a time-dependent drag force owing to the interaction of excitons in graphene and the electric current running in a neighboring quantum well. It is demonstrated that one can control the polariton flow direction by changing the direction of the electric current. The simulations also show that…
We study tunable polaritons in monolayers of silicene, germanene, and stanene (Xenes) via an external electric field in an open optical microcavity whose length can be adjusted. An external electric field applied perpendicular to the plane of the Xene monolayer simultaneously changes the band gap and the exciton binding energy, while the variable length of the open microcavity allows one to keep the exciton and cavity photon modes in resonance. First, the Schrödinger equation for an electron and hole in an Xene monolayer is solved, yielding the eigenergies and eigenfunctions of the exciton as …
Light-matter interactions at the nanoscale constitute a fundamental ingredient for engineering applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. To this regard electromagnetic Mie resonances excited in high-refractive index dielectric nanoparticles have recently attracted interest because of their lower losses and better control over the scattering patterns compared to their plasmonic metallic counterparts. The emergence of several resonances in those systems results in an overall high complexity, where the electric and magnetic dipoles have significant overlap in the case of spherical symmetr…
Neutral particles subject to artificial gauge potentials can behave as charged particles in magnetic fields. This fascinating premise has led to demonstrations of one-way waveguides, topologically protected edge states and Landau levels for photons. In ultracold neutral atoms effective gauge fields have allowed the emulation of matter under strong magnetic fields leading to realization of Harper-Hofstadter and Haldane models. Here we show that application of perpendicular electric and magnetic fields effects a tuneable artificial gauge potential for two-dimensional microcavity exciton polarito…
The drag of half-light half-mater quasiparticles, exciton-polaritons, by an electric current is a peculiar mechanism of light-matter interaction in solids. While an ideal superfluid is protected from being dragged by its zero viscosity, here we argue that the state of the superfluid polariton condensate formed by a non-resonant optical pumping can be controlled by the electric current. The proposed mechanism is based on the stimulated relaxation of moving uncondensed excitons dragged by the electric current. The stimulated relaxation process favors the formation of a moving condensate in a qua…
Exciton-polaritons are mutually interacting quantum hybridizations of confined photons and electronic excitations. Here we demonstrate a system of optically guided, electrically polarized exciton-polaritons ('dipolaritons') that displays up to 200-fold enhancement of the polariton-polariton interaction strength compared to unpolarized polaritons. The magnitude of the dipolar interaction enhancement can be turned on and off and be easily tuned over a very wide range by varying the applied polarizing electric-field. The very large interaction strengths and the very long propagation distances of …
We have theoretically demonstrated the on demand electric generation of vortices in an exciton-polariton superfluid. Electric pulses applied to a horseshoe-shaped metallic mesa, deposited on top of the microcavity, generate a non-cylindrically symmetric solitonic wave in the system. Breakdown of its wavefront at focal points leads to the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs which subsequently propagate in the superfluid. The trajectory of these vortex dipoles can be controlled by applying a voltage to additional electrodes. They can be confined within channels formed by metallic stripes and un…
We consider half-integer topological defects in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons. We show that they accelerate under the effect of an in-plane effective magnetic field, like regular electric charges in the electric field. The trajectories of these analogues of magnetic monopoles are derived analytically and checked by numerical simulations. We show that these "magnetic charges" propagate at large in-plane velocities and remain stable up to a critical magnetic field, thanks to the unique spin-anisotropy of polariton interactions.
Linear in the wave-vector terms of an electron Hamiltonian play an important role in topological insulators and spintronic devices. Here we demonstrate how an external electric field controls the magnitude of a linear-in-K term in the exciton Hamiltonian in wide GaAs quantum wells. The dependence of this term on the applied field in a high quality sample was studied by means of the differential reflection spectroscopy. An excellent agreement between the experimental data and the results of calculations using semi-classical non-local dielectric response model confirms the validity of the method…
We demonstrate an efficient switching between strong and weak exciton-photon coupling regimes in microcavity-embedded asymmetric double quantum wells, controlled by an applied electric field. We show that a fine tuning of the electric field leads to drastic changes in the polariton properties, with the polariton ground state being red-shifted by a few meV and having acquired prominent features of a spatially indirect dipolar exciton. We study the properties of dipolar exciton polaritons, called dipolaritons, on a microscopic level and show that, unlike recent findings, they are not dark polari…
We propose a mechanism of angular momentum conversion from optical transverse spin in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) to conduction electron spin. Free electrons in the metal follow the transversally spinning electric field of SPP, and the resulting orbital motions create inhomogeneous static magnetisation in the metal. By solving the spin diffusion equation in the SPP, we find that the magnetisation field generates an electron spin current. We show that there exists a resonant condition where the spin current is resonantly enhanced, and the polarisation of the spin current is flipped. Our t…
We demonstrate a dynamic surface plasmonic modulation of graphene-nanowire hybrid structures in visible light range, which was thought to be a tough task for graphene based field effect transistor modulator previously. Static modulation depth of as high as 0.07 dB/μm has been achieved experimentally. Carefully simulation indicates the strongly focused electromagnetic field and dramatically enhanced electric field at the interface between a silver NW and a graphene sheet are key roles for bringing the optical response of the device to the visible range. Furthermore, the modulation behaviors nea…
Active control of light-matter interactions in semiconductors is critical for realizing next generation optoelectronic devices, with tunable control of the systems optical properties via external fields. The ability to manipulate optical interactions in active materials coupled to cavities via geometrical parameters, which are fixed along with dynamic control with applied fields opens up possibilities of controlling exciton lifetimes, oscillator strengths and their relaxation properties. Here, we demonstrate electrical control of exciton-plasmon polariton coupling strength of a two-dimensional…
We consider scattering of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and light by individual high-refractive-index dielectric nanoparticles (NPs) located on a metal (gold) substrate and supporting electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the visible spectral range. Numerical calculations are carried out by making use of the discrete dipole approximation including the multipole decomposition procedure. Extinction and scattering cross section spectra of spheroid silicon NPs in visible and near-infrared are presented and discussed. The roles of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of electric and ma…
The properties of the two-dimensional cavity polaritons subjected to the action of a strong perpendicular magnetic and electric fields, giving rise to the Landau quantization (LQ) of the 2D electrons and holes accompanied by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, by the Zeeman splitting and by the nonparabolicity of the heavy-hole dispersion law are investigated. We use the method proposed by Rashba [1] and the obtained results are based on the exact solutions for the eigenfunctions and for the eigenvalues of the Pauli-type Hamilonians with third order chirality terms and nonparabolic dispersion law …
We describe a mechanism by which an electrical bias voltage applied across a unipolar semiconductor quantum well can drive an exciton or polariton supercurrent. The mechanism depends on the properties of electronic quasiparticles in quantum wells or two-dimensional materials that are dressed by interactions with the coherent exciton field of an exciton condensate or the coherent exciton and photon fields of a polariton condensate, and on approximate conservation laws. We propose experiments that can be performed to realize this new light-matter coupling effect, and discuss possible application…
Exciton-polaritons are hybrid light-matter excitations arising from the non-perturbative coupling of a photonic mode and an excitonic resonance. Behaving as interacting photons, they show optical third-order nonlinearities providing effects such as optical parametric oscillation or amplification. It has been suggested that polariton-polariton interactions can be greatly enhanced by inducing aligned electric dipoles in their excitonic part. However direct evidence of a true particle-particle interaction, such as superfluidity or parametric scattering is still missing. In this work, we demonstra…
For dipole-carrying excitations observed in a high-quality resonator, strong-coupling modes can appear as composite bosons with the spontaneous formation of quantized vortices in the condensed phase of a polariton fluid. In exciton-polaritons, in particular, it leads to sustained trapping of the emitted photon. In this paper, we show that magnon-polaritons can be realized due to magnon condensation caused by magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. In a quasi-2D ferrite disk placed in a microwave cavity, one observes quantum confinement effects of magnetic-dipolar-mode (MDM) oscillations. These mod…
We predict that the transverse electric-magnetic polarization splitting of exciton-polaritons allows a simple technique for the generation of polariton vortices of winding number 2 in semiconductor microcavities. The vortices can be excited by circularly polarized light having no orbital angular momentum and observed as phase vortices in the opposite circular polarization or directly as linear polarization vortices. The prediction is explained by a simplified analytical linear model and shown fully with a numerical model based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equations, which includes the non-linear ef…
Achieving magnetometers with ultrahigh sensitivity at room temperature is an outstanding problem in physical sciences and engineering. Recently developed non-Hermitian cavity spintronics offers new possibilities. In this work we predict an exceptional magnetic sensitivity of cavity magnon polaritons with the peculiar parity-time (PT) symmetry. Based on the input-output formalism, we demonstrate a "Z"-shape spectrum including two sideband modes and a dark-state branch with an ultranarrow linewidth in the exact PT phase. The spectrum evolves to a step function when the polariton touches the thir…
We report the first experimental two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectra of novel molecular photonic excitations - vibrational-polaritons. The application of advanced 2D IR spectroscopy onto novel vibrational-polariton challenges and advances our understanding in both fields. From spectroscopy aspect, 2D IR spectra of polaritons differ drastically from free uncoupled molecules; from vibrational-polariton aspects, 2D IR uniquely resolves hybrid light-matter polariton excitations and unexpected dark states in a state-selective manner and revealed hidden interactions between them. Moreover, 2D I…

We consider photons strongly coupled to the excitonic excitations of a coupled quantum well, in the presence of an electric field. We show how under a field increase, the hybrid polariton made of photon coupled to hybrid carriers lying in the two wells, transforms into a dipolariton made of photon coupled to direct and indirect excitons. We also show how the cavity photon lifetime and the coherence time of the carrier wave vectors, that we analytically handle through non-hermitian Hamiltonians, affect these polaritonic states. While the hybrid polaritons display a spectral singularity, where t…
The Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnetoexcitonic polaritons in a graphene layer embedded in a optical microcavity in a high magnetic field $B$ is predicted. The essential property of this system (in contrast, e.g., to a quantum well embedded in a cavity) is stronger influence of magnetic field and weaker influence of disorder. A two-dimensional (2D) magnetoexcitonic polaritons gas is considered in a planar harmonic electric field potential applied to excitons or a parabolic shape of the optical cavity causing the trapping of microcavity photons. It is shown that the effective polariton…
Microcavity exciton polaritons are promising candidates to build a new generation of highly nonlinear and integrated optoelectronic devices. Such devices range from novel coherent light emitters to reconfigurable potential landscapes for electro-optical polariton-lattice based quantum simulators as well as building blocks of optical logic architectures. Especially for the latter, the strongly interacting nature of the light-matter hybrid particles has been used to facilitate fast and efficient switching of light by light, something which is very hard to achieve with weakly interacting photons.…
Mobile quantum impurities interacting with a fermionic bath form quasiparticles known as Fermi polarons. We demonstrate that a force applied to the bath particles can generate a drag force of similar magnitude acting on the impurities, realizing a novel, nonperturbative Coulomb drag effect. To prove this, we calculate the fully self-consistent, frequency-dependent transconductivity at zero temperature in the Baym-Kadanoff conserving approximation. We apply our theory to excitons and exciton polaritons interacting with a bath of charge carriers in a doped semiconductor embedded in a microcavity…
