We theoretically explore 2d moiré heterostructures in lattice-commensurate magnetic fields as platforms for quantum simulation of a paradigmatic model of non-Fermi liquid physics: a Fermi-surface coupled to a fluctuating gauge field. In these moiré-Hofstadter (MH) systems, long-wavelength acoustic phonons exhibit singular interactions with electrons analogous to those of electrons with 2d gauge fields. This leads to a breakdown of Fermi-liquid theory at low temperatures. We show that a combination of large moiré-unit cell size, tunable Fermi-surface topology, and enhanced coupling to interlayer sliding modes, enhance these effects by over many orders-of-magnitude compared to bulk crystals, placing them within experimental reach. Though we find that the asymptotic low-temperature non-Fermi liquid regime remains at prohibitively low temperatures, striking precursor non-Fermi liquid signatures can be observed, and we propose surface acoustic wave attenuation and quantum oscillation transport experiments. We also study the motion of MH acoustic-polarons, which we predict exhibit logarithmically diverging effective mass and unconventional magnetic field scaling for scaling of cyclotron resonance frequency and quantum oscillation amplitude.
Moiré superlattices in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide 20 an efficient way to engineer electron band properties. The recent discovery of exotic quantum phases and their interplay in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has built this moiré system one of the most renowned condensed matter platforms (1-10). So far the studies of tBLG has been mostly focused on the lowest two flat moiré bands at the first magic angle θm1 ~ 1.1°, leaving high-order moiré bands and magic angles largely unexplored. Here we report 25 an observation of multiple well-isolated flat moiré ban…
We study the transition of $ν=1/3$ and $2/5$ fractional quantum Hall states of the honeycomb Hofstadter model as we tune to a two-orbital moiré superlattice Hamiltonian, motivated by the flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene in a perpendicular magnetic field. In doing so, we address the extent to which these states survive in moiré systems and analyze the nature of the transition. Through the use of a Peierls substitution, we determine the Landau-level splitting for the moiré Hamiltonian, and study the structure of the Chern bands for a range of magnetic flux per plaquette. We identify topolo…
In magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), the moiré superlattice potential gives rise to narrow electronic bands1 which support a multitude of many-body quantum phases. Further richness arises in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, where the interplay between moiré and magnetic length scales leads to fractal Hofstadter subbands. In this strongly correlated Hofstadter platform, multiple experiments have identified gapped topological and correlated states, but little is known about the phase transitions between them in the intervening compressible regimes. Here, using a scanni…
The problem of two-dimensional, independent electrons subject to a periodic potential and a uniform perpendicular magnetic field unveils surprisingly rich physics, as epitomized by the fractal energy spectrum known as Hofstadter's Butterfly. It has hitherto been addressed using various approximations rooted in either the strong potential or the strong field limiting cases. Here we report calculations of the full spectrum of the single-particle Schrödinger equation without further approximations. Our method is exact, up to numerical precision, for any combination of potential and uniform field …
Self-similarity and fractals have fascinated researchers across various disciplines. In graphene placed on boron nitride and subjected to a magnetic field, self-similarity appears in the form of numerous replicas of the original Dirac spectrum, and their quantization gives rise to a fractal pattern of Landau levels, referred to as the Hofstadter butterfly. Here we employ capacitance spectroscopy to probe directly the density of states (DoS) and energy gaps in this spectrum. Without a magnetic field, replica spectra are seen as pronounced DoS minima surrounded by van Hove singularities. The Hof…
We have developed a different quantum transfer matrix method to accurately determine thermodynamic properties of the Hofstadter model. This method resolves a technical problem which is intractable by other methods and makes the calculation of physical quantities of the Hofstadter model in the thermodynamic limit at finite temperatures feasible. It is shown that the quantum correction to the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation of magnetization bears the energy structure of Hofstadter butterfly. The measurement of this quantum correction, which can be materialized on the superlattice or cold a…
Fractal Hofstadter bands have become widely accessible with the advent of moiré superlattices, opening the door to studies of the effect of interactions in these systems. In this work we employ a renormalization group (RG) analysis to demonstrate that the combination of repulsive interactions with the presence of a tunable manifold of Van Hove singularities provides a new mechanism for driving unconventional superconductivity in Hofstadter bands. Specifically, the number of Van Hove singularities at the Fermi energy can be controlled by varying the flux per unit cell and the electronic filling…

We develop a new, efficient, and general method to determine the Hofstadter spectrum of isolated narrow bands. The method works for topological as well as for trivial narrow bands by projecting the zero $\mathbf{B}$-field hybrid Wannier states -- which are localized in one direction and Bloch extended in another direction -- onto a representation of the magnetic translation group in the Landau gauge. We then apply this method to find, for the first time, the Hofstadter spectrum for the exact single particle charged excitations in the strong coupling limit of the magic angle twisted bilayer gra…
The energy spectrum of the Hofstadter model has a fractal structure with infinitely many gaps. We prove the persistence of each gap in presence of Hubbard interaction in the case of small transversal hopping, even when the coupling is much larger than the non interacting gaps. The proof relies on a subtle interplay of Renormalization Group arguments combined with number-theoretic properties of the incommensurate frequencies.
We introduce the magnonic Floquet Hofstadter butterfly in the two-dimensional insulating honeycomb ferromagnet. We show that when the insulating honeycomb ferromagnet is irradiated by an oscillating space- and time-dependent electric field, the hopping magnetic dipole moment (i.e. magnon quasiparticles) accumulate the Aharonov-Casher phase. In the case of only space-dependent electric field, we realize the magnonic Hofstadter spectrum with similar fractal structure as graphene subject to a perpendicular magnetic field, but with no spin degeneracy due to broken time-reversal symmetry by the fer…

The Harper-Hofstadter model provides a fractal spectrum containing topological bands of any integer Chern number, $C$. We study the many-body physics that is realized by interacting particles occupying Harper-Hofstadter bands with $|C|>1$. We formulate the predictions of Chern-Simons or composite fermion theory in terms of the filling factor, $ν$, defined as the ratio of particle density to the number of single-particle states per unit area. We show that this theory predicts a series of fractional quantum Hall states with filling factors $ν= r/(r|C| +1)$ for bosons, or $ν= r/(2r|C| +1)$ for fe…
Electrons on the lattice subject to a strong magnetic field exhibit the fractal spectrum of electrons, which is known as the Hofstadter butterfly. In this work, we investigate unconventional superconductivity in a three-dimensional Hofstadter butterfly system. While it is generally difficult to achieve the Hofstadter regime, we show that the quasi-two-dimensional materials with a tilted magnetic field produce the large-scale superlattices, which generate the Hofstadter butterfly even at the moderate magnetic field strength. We first show that the van-Hove singularities of the butterfly flat ba…
The discovery of flat bands with non-trivial band topology in magic angle twisted bi-layer graphene (MATBG) has provided a unique platform to study strongly correlated phe-nomena including superconductivity, correlated insulators, Chern insulators and magnetism. A fundamental feature of the MATBG, so far unexplored, is its high magnetic field Hof-stadter spectrum. Here we report on a detailed magneto-transport study of a MATBG de-vice in external magnetic fields of up to B = 31 T, corresponding to one magnetic flux quan-tum per moiré unit cell Φ0. At Φ0, we observe a re-entrant correlated insu…
At partial filling of a flat band, strong electronic interactions may favor gapped states harboring emergent topology with quantized Hall conductivity. Emergent topological states have been found in partially filled Landau levels and Hofstadter bands; in both cases, a large magnetic field is required to engineer the underlying flat band. The recent observation of quantum anomalous Hall effects (QAH) in narrow band moiré systems has led to the theoretical prediction that such phases may be realized even at zero magnetic field. Here we report the experimental observation of insulators with Chern…
The Hofstadter-Hubbard model captures the physics of strongly correlated electrons in an applied magnetic field, which is relevant to many recent experiments on Moiré materials. Few large-scale, numerically exact simulations exists for this model. In this work, we simulate the Hubbard-Hofstadter model using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) algorithm. We report the field and Hubbard interaction strength dependence of charge compressibility, fermion sign, local moment, magnetic structure factor, and specific heat. The gross structure of magnetic Bloch bands and band gaps determined by …

The competition between the length scales associated with the periodicity of a lattice potential and the cyclotron radius of a uniform magnetic field is known to have dramatic effects on the single-particle properties of a quantum particle, e.g., the fractal spectrum is known as the Hofstadter butterfly. Having this intricate competition in mind, we consider a two-component Fermi gas on a square optical lattice with opposite synthetic magnetic fields for the components, and study its effects on the many-body BCS-pairing phenomenon. By a careful addressing of the distinct superfluid transitions…
We investigate the Hall conductivity in a Sierpinski carpet, a fractal of Hausdorff dimension $d_f=\ln(8)/\ln(3) \approx 1.893$, subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. We compute the Hall conductivity using linear response and the recursive Green function method. Our main finding is that edge modes, corresponding to a maximum Hall conductivity of at least $σ_{xy}=\pm \frac{e^2}{h}$, seems to be generically present for arbitrary finite field strength, no mater how one approaches the thermodynamic limit of the fractal. We discuss a simple counting rule to determine the maximal number of edge…
