We relate together different models of non linear acoustic in thermo-ellastic media as the Kuznetsov equation, the Westervelt equation, the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov (KZK) equation and the Nonlinear Progressive wave Equation (NPE) and estimate the time during which the solutions of these models keep closed in the L 2 norm. The KZK and NPE equations are considered as paraxial approximations of the Kuznetsov equation. The Westervelt equation is obtained as a nonlinear approximation of the Kuznetsov equation. Aiming to compare the solutions of the exact and approximated systems in found approximation domains the well-posedness results (for the Kuznetsov equation in a half-space with periodic in time initial and boundary data) are obtained.
The derivation of different models of non linear acoustic in thermo-ellastic media as the Kuznetsov equation, the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov (KZK) equation and the Nonlinear Progressive wave Equation (NPE) from an isentropic Navier-Stokes/Euler system is systematized using the Hilbert type expansion in the corresponding perturbative and (for the KZK and NPE equations) paraxial ansatz . The use of small, to compare to the constant state perturbations, correctors allows to obtain the approximation results for the solutions of these models and to estimate the time during which they keep clos…
The present work provides well-posedness and exponential decay results for the Blackstock-Crighton-Kuznetsov equation arising in the modeling of nonlinear acoustic wave propagation in thermally relaxing viscous fluids. First, we treat the associated linear equation by means of operator semigroups. Moreover, we derive energy estimates which we will use in a fixed-point argument in order to obtain well-posedness of the Blackstock-Crighton-Kuznetsov equation. Using a classical barrier argument we prove exponential decay of solutions.
In this paper, we consider the Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation, a third order in time wave equation describing the nonlinear propagation of sound that avoids the infinite signal speed paradox of classical second order in time strongly damped models of nonlinear acoustics, such as the Westervelt and the Kuznetsov equation. We show well-posedness in an acoustic velocity potential formulation with and without gradient nonlinearity, corresponding to the Kuznetsov and the Westervelt nonlinearities, respectively. Moreover, we consider the limit as the parameter of the third order time derivati…
This work is concerned with the study of fundamental models from nonlinear acoustics. In Part~I, a hierarchy of nonlinear damped wave equations arising in the description of sound propagation in thermoviscous fluids is deduced. In particular, a rigorous justification of two classical models, the Kuznetsov and Westervelt equations, retained as limiting systems for consistent initial data, is given. Numerical comparisons that confirm and complement the theoretical results are provided in Part~II.
We consider the Cauchy problem for a model of non-linear acoustics, named the Kuznetsov equation, describing sound propagation in thermo-viscous elastic media. For the viscous case, it is a weakly quasi-linear strongly damped wave equation, for which we prove the global existence in time of regular solutions for sufficiently small initial data, the size of which is specified, and give the corresponding energy estimates. In the non-viscous case, we update the known results of John for quasi-linear wave equations, obtaining the well-posedness results for less regular initial data. We obtain, usi…
In various biomedical applications, precise focusing of nonlinear ultrasonic waves is crucial for efficiency and safety of the involved procedures. This work analyzes a class of shape optimization problems constrained by general quasi-linear acoustic wave equations that arise in high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) applications. Within our theoretical framework, the Westervelt and Kuznetsov equations of nonlinear acoustics are obtained as particular cases. The quadratic gradient nonlinearity, specific to the Kuznetsov equation, requires special attention throughout. To prove the existence …
We analyze the behavior of third-order in time linear and nonlinear sound waves in thermally relaxing fluids and gases as the sound diffusivity vanishes. The nonlinear acoustic propagation is modeled by the Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation both in its Westervelt and in its Kuznetsov-type forms, that is, including quadratic nonlinearities of the type $(u^2)_{tt}$ and $ (u_t^2 + |\nabla u|^2)_t$. As it turns out, sufficiently smooth solutions of these equations converge in the energy norm to the solutions of the corresponding inviscid models at a linear rate. Numerical experiments illust…
We investigate a quasilinear initial-boundary value problem for Kuznetsov's equation with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. This is a model in nonlinear acoustics which describes the propagation of sound in fluidic media with applications in medical ultrasound. We prove that there exists a unique global solution which depends continuously on the sufficiently small data and that the solution and its temporal derivatives converge at an exponential rate as time tends to infinity. Compared to the analysis of Kaltenbacher & Lasiecka, we require optimal regularity conditions on the data…
This work deals with the convergence analysis of parabolic perturbations to quasilinear wave equations on smooth bounded domains. In particular, we consider wave equations with nonlinearities of quadratic type, which cover the two classical models of nonlinear acoustics, the Westervelt and Kuznetsov equations. By employing a high-order energy analysis, we obtain convergence of their solutions to the corresponding inviscid equations' solutions in the standard energy norm with a linear rate, assuming small data and a sufficiently short time. The smallness of initial data can, however, be imposed…
We analyse the existing derivation of the models of non-linear acoustics such as the Kuznetsov equation, the NPE equation and the KZK equation. The technique of introducing a corrector in the derivation ansatz allows to consider the solutions of these equations as approximations of the solution of the initial system (a com-pressible Navier-Stokes/Euler system). The validation of the approximation ansatz is given for the KZK equation case.
Classical models for the propagation of ultrasound waves are the Westervelt equation, the Kuznetsov and the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov equations. The Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation is a prominent example of a Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model which describes the acoustic velocity potential in ultrasound wave propagation, where the paradox of infinite speed of propagation of thermal signals is eliminated; the use of the constitutive Cattaneo law for the heat flux, in place of the Fourier law, accounts for its being of third order in time. Aiming at the understanding of the f…
Accurate simulation of nonlinear acoustic waves is essential for the continued development of a wide range of (high-intensity) focused ultrasound applications. This article explores mixed finite element formulations of classical strongly damped quasilinear models of ultrasonic wave propagation; the Kuznetsov and Westervelt equations. Such formulations allow simultaneous retrieval of the acoustic particle velocity and either the pressure or acoustic velocity potential, thus characterizing the entire ultrasonic field at once. Using non-standard energy analysis and a fixed-point technique, we est…
We study a rather general class of optimal "ballistic" transport problems for matrix-valued measures. These problems naturally arise, in the spirit of \emph{Y. Brenier. Comm. Math. Phys. (2018) 364(2) 579-605}, from a certain dual formulation of nonlinear evolutionary equations with a particular quadratic structure reminiscent both of the incompressible Euler equation and of the quadratic Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The examples include the ideal incompressible MHD, the template matching equation, the multidimensional Camassa-Holm (also known as the Hdiv geodesic equation), EPDiff, Euler-alpha, …
Consider the acoustic wave equation with unknown, not necessarily smooth, wave speed $c$. We propose and study an iterative control procedure that erases the history of a wave field up to a given depth in a medium, without any knowledge of $c$. In the context of seismic or ultrasound imaging, this can be viewed as removing multiple reflections from normal-directed wavefronts.
In acoustics, higher-order-in-time equations arise when taking into account a class of thermal relaxation laws in the modeling of sound wave propagation. In this work, we analyze initial boundary value problems for a family of such equations and determine the behavior of solutions as the relaxation time vanishes. In particular, we allow the leading term to be of fractional type. The studied model can be viewed as a generalization of the well-established (fractional) Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation with three, in general nonlocal, convolution terms involving two different kernels. The interpla…
