The ACIS-S camera on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory has been used to discover a hot bubble in the planetary nebula (PN) IC4593, the most distant PN detected by Chandra so far. The data are used to study the distribution of the X-ray-emitting gas in IC 4593 and to estimate its physical properties. The hot bubble has a radius of ~2$^{\prime\prime}$ and is found to be confined inside the optically-bright innermost cavity of IC 4593. The X-ray emission is mostly consistent with that of an optically-thin plasma with temperature $kT\approx0.15$ keV (or $T_\mathrm{X}\approx1.7\times10^{6}$ K), electron density $n_\mathrm{e}\approx15$ cm$^{-3}$, and intrinsic X-ray luminosity in the 0.3-1.5 keV energy range $L_\mathrm{X}=3.4\times10^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$. A careful analysis of the distribution of hard ($E>$0.8 keV) photons in IC 4593 suggests the presence of X-ray emission from a point source likely associated with its central star (CSPN). If this were the case, its estimated X-ray luminosity would be $L_\mathrm{X,CSPN}=7\times10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$, fulfilling the log$(L_\mathrm{X,CSPN}/L_\mathrm{bol})\approx-7$ relation for self-shocking winds in hot stars. The X-ray detection of the CSPN helps explain the presence of high-ionisation species detected in the UV spectra as predicted by stellar atmosphere models.
Planetary Nebulae are the ionised ejected envelopes surrounding the remnant cores of dying stars. Theory predicts that main-sequence stars with one to about eight times the mass of our sun may eventually form planetary nebulae. Until now no example has been confirmed at the higher mass range. Here we report that planetary nebula BMP J1613-5406 is associated with Galactic star cluster NGC 6067. Stars evolving off the main sequence of this cluster have a mass around five solar masses. Confidence in the planetary nebula-cluster association comes from their tightly consistent radial velocities in …
We present evidence that the nebular cocoon and bow-shock emission nebula putatively and recently reported as deriving from the 9th magnitude "runaway" star HD 185806 is the previously discovered but obscure planetary nebula WHTZ 1 (Ra 7). It has a Gaia DR3 G~16 blue ionizing star at its geometric centre. We present imagery, spectroscopy, other data and arguments to support that this emission source is a high excitation Planetary Nebula not a stellar wind bow shock.
The Stingray Nebula, aka Hen3-1357, appeared for the first time in 1990 when bright nebular lines and radio emission that had not been observed before were unexpectedly discovered (Parthasarathy et al. 1993). In the ensuing years the nebula faded precipitously. We report changes in shape and large decreases in its nebular emission-line fluxes based on well-calibrated images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1996 and 2016. Hen3-1357 is now a "recombination nebula".
Radio continuum observations trace thermal emission of ionized plasma in planetary nebulae and bring useful information on nebular geometries. A model of homogeneous sphere or shell cannot fit the nebular spectra and brightness temperatures. Two alternative models have been proposed in the literature: the first one consists of two homogeneous components, while the other one is a model of a shell with a significant radial density gradient. On the other side, prolate ellipsoidal shell model can successfully fit the surface brightness distribution of selected objects. We verify the existing model…
We present observations of planetary nebulae with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) between 120 and 168 MHz. The images show thermal free-free emission from the nebular shells. We have determined the electron temperatures for spatially resolved, optically thick nebulae. These temperatures are 20 to 60% lower than those estimated from collisionally excited optical emission lines. This strongly supports the existence of a cold plasma component, which co-exists with hot plasma in planetary nebulae. This cold plasma does not contribute to the collisionally excited lines, but does contribute to recom…
We report confirmation of a large, evolved, bipolar planetary nebula and its blue, white dwarf central star as a member of the ~500 Myr old Galactic open star cluster M37 (NGC 2099). This is only the third known example of a planetary nebula in a Galactic open cluster and was found via our on-going program of identifying and studying planetary nebulae - open cluster associations. High confidence in the association comes from the consistent radial velocities and proper motions for the confirmed central star and cluster stars from Gaia, reddening agreement and location of the planetary nebula we…
Planetary nebulae (PNe) were expected to be filled with hot pressurized gas driving their expansion. ROSAT hinted at the presence of diffuse X-ray emission from these hot bubbles and detected the first sources of hard X-ray emission from their central stars, but it was not until the advent of Chandra and XMM-Newton that we became able to study in detail their occurrence and physical properties. Here I review the progress in the X-ray observations of PNe since the first WORKshop for PLAnetary Nebulae observationS (WORKPLANS) and present the perspective for future X-ray missions with particular …
We present 2D hydrodynamical simulations of the transition of a proto-planetary nebula to a planetary nebula for central stars in binary systems that have undergone a common envelope event. After 1,000 yr of magnetically driven dynamics (proto-planetary nebula phase), a line-driven stellar wind is introduced into the computational domain and the expansion of the nebula is simulated for another 10,000 yr, including the effects of stellar photoionization. In this study we consider central stars with main sequence (final) masses of 1 (0.569) and 2.5 (0.677) \Mo, together with a 0.6 \Mo ma in sequ…
The increase in discovered close binary central stars of planetary nebulae is leading to a sufficiently large sample to begin to make broader conclusions about the effect of close binary stars on common envelope evolution and planetary nebula formation. Herein I review some of the recent results and conclusions specifically relating close binary central stars to nebular shaping, common envelope evolution off the red giant branch, and the total binary fraction and double degenerate fraction of central stars. Finally, I use parameters of known binary central stars to explore the relationship bet…
We present the discovery and characterisation of the post-common-envelope central star system in the planetary nebula PN G283.7$-$05.1. Deep images taken as part of the POPIPlaN survey indicate that the nebula may possess a bipolar morphology similar to other post-common-envelope planetary nebulae. Simultaneous light and radial velocity curve modelling reveals the newly discovered binary system to comprise a highly-irradiated, M-type main-sequence star in a 5.9 hour orbit with a hot pre-white-dwarf. The nebular progenitor is found to have a particularly low mass of around 0.4 M$_\odot$, making…
The Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a large integral field unit mounted on the ESO Very Large Telescope. Its spatial (60 arcsecond field) and wavelength (4800-9300A) coverage is well suited to detailed imaging spectroscopy of extended planetary nebulae, such as in the Galaxy. An overview of the capabilities of MUSE applied to planetary nebulae (PNe) is provided together with the specific advantages and disadvantages. Some examples of archival MUSE observations of PNe are provided. MUSE datacubes for two targets (NGC 3132 and NGC 7009) have been analysed in detail and they are used …
Observations of the planetary nebula RWT 152 with OSIRIS/GTC
We present a comprehensive analysis of the compact planetary nebula M2-31 investigating its spectral properties, spatio-kinematical structure and chemical composition using GTC MEGARA integral field spectroscopic observations and NOT ALFOSC medium-resolution spectra and narrow-band images. The GTC MEGARA high-dispersion observations have remarkable tomographic capabilities, producing an unprecedented view of the morphology and kinematics of M2-31 that discloses a fast spectroscopic bipolar outflow along position angles 50$^\circ$ and 230$^\circ$, an extended shell and a toroidal structure or w…
