We present a simple but general framework for constructing quantum circuits that implement the multiply-controlled unitary $\text{Select}(H) \equiv \sum_\ell |\ell\rangle\langle\ell|\otimes H_\ell$, where $H = \sum_\ell H_\ell$ is the Jordan-Wigner transform of an arbitrary second-quantised fermionic Hamiltonian. $\text{Select}(H)$ is one of the main subroutines of several quantum algorithms, including state-of-the-art techniques for Hamiltonian simulation. If each term in the second-quantised Hamiltonian involves at most $k$ spin-orbitals and $k$ is a constant independent of the total number of spin-orbitals $n$ (as is the case for the majority of quantum chemistry and condensed matter models considered in the literature, for which $k$ is typically 2 or 4), our implementation of $\text{Select}(H)$ requires no ancilla qubits and uses $\mathcal{O}(n)$ Clifford+T gates, with the Clifford gates applied in $\mathcal{O}(\log^2 n)$ layers and the $T$ gates in $O(\log n)$ layers. This achieves an exponential improvement in both Clifford- and T-depth over previous work, while maintaining linear gate count and reducing the number of ancillae to zero.
There can exist topological obstructions to continuously deforming a gapped Hamiltonian for free fermions into a trivial form without closing the gap. These topological obstructions are closely related to obstructions to the existence of exponentially localized Wannier functions. We show that by taking two copies of a gapped, free fermionic system with complex conjugate Hamiltonians, it is always possible to overcome these obstructions. This allows us to write the ground state in matrix product form using Grassman-valued bond variables, and show insensitivity of the ground state density matrix…
A reasonable quantum information theory for fermions must respect the parity super-selection rule to comply with the special theory of relativity and the no-signaling principle. This rule restricts the possibility of any quantum state to have a superposition between even and odd parity fermionic states. It thereby characterizes the set of physically allowed fermionic quantum states. Here we introduce the physically allowed quantum operations, in congruence with the parity super-selection rule, that map the set of allowed fermionic states onto itself. We first introduce unitary and projective m…

The evolution of a quantum system towards thermal equilibrium is usually studied by approximate methods, which have their limits of validity and should be checked against analytically solvable models. In this paper, we propose an analytically solvable model to investigate the energy transfer between a bosonic bath and a fermionic chain which are nonlinearly-coupled to each other. The bosonic bath consists of an infinite collection of non-interacting bosonic modes, while the fermionic chain is represented by a chain of interacting fermions with nearest-neighbor interactions. We compare behavior…

Efficient quantum circuits are necessary for realizing quantum algorithms on noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. Fermionic excitations entering unitary coupled-cluster (UCC) ansätze give rise to quantum circuits containing CNOT "staircases" whose number scales exponentially with the excitation rank. Recently, Yordanov et al. [Phys. Rev. A 102, 062612 (2020); Commun. Phys. 4, 228 (2021)] constructed CNOT-efficient quantum circuits for both fermionic- (FEB) and qubit-excitation-based (QEB) singles and doubles and illustrated their usefulness in adaptive derivative-assembled pseudo-Trotteri…

For over twenty years, ultra-cold atomic systems have formed an almost perfect arena for simulating different quantum many-body phenomena and exposing their non-obvious and very often counterintuitive features. Thanks to extremely precise controllability of different parameters they are able to capture different quantum properties which were previously recognized only as theoretical curiosities. Here, we go over the current experimental progress in exploring the curious one-dimensional quantum world of fermions from the perspective of three subjectively selected trends being currently under vi…
Coupling a quantum particle to a fermionic bath suppresses the particle's amplitude to tunnel, even at zero temperature. While this effect can generally be neglected for gapped baths -- a key feature for superconducting qubits -- , it is possible for the bath to be gapped near the potential minima between which the particle tunnels, but different minima to correspond to different bath topologies. This enforces the bath to undergo gap closing along the tunneling path. In this work, we investigate quantum tunneling in the presence of such a topology-changing fermionic bath. We develop a field th…
We introduce novel algorithms for the quantum simulation of molecular systems which are asymptotically more efficient than those based on the Trotter-Suzuki decomposition. We present the first application of a recently developed technique for simulating Hamiltonian evolution using a truncated Taylor series to obtain logarithmic scaling with the inverse of the desired precision, an exponential improvement over all prior methods. The two algorithms developed in this work rely on a second quantized encoding of the wavefunction in which the state of an $N$ spin-orbital system is encoded in ${\cal …

We investigate the problem of fast-forwarding quantum evolution, whereby the dynamics of certain quantum systems can be simulated with gate complexity that is sublinear in the evolution time. We provide a definition of fast-forwarding that considers the model of quantum computation, the Hamiltonians that induce the evolution, and the properties of the initial states. Our definition accounts for any asymptotic complexity improvement of the general case and we use it to demonstrate fast-forwarding in several quantum systems. In particular, we show that some local spin systems whose Hamiltonians …

We extend the twin-space formulation of the hierarchical equations of motion approach in combination with the matrix product state representation (introduced in J. Chem. Phys. 150, 234102, [2019]) to nonequilibrium scenarios where the open quantum system is coupled to a hybrid fermionic and bosonic environment. The key ideas used in the extension are a reformulation of the hierarchical equations of motion for the auxiliary density matrices into a time-dependent Schrödinger-like equation for an augmented multi-dimensional wave function as well as a tensor decomposition into a product of low-ran…
We study the temporal evolution of the mutual information (MI) in a one-dimensional Kitaev chain, coupled to a fermionic Markovian bath, subsequent to a global quench of the chemical potential. In the unitary case, the MI (or equivalently the bipartite entanglement entropy) saturates to a steady-state value (obeying a volume law) following a ballistic growth. On the contrary, we establish that in the dissipative case the MI is exponentially damped both during the initial ballistic growth as well as in the approach to the steady state. We observe that even in a dissipative system, postquench in…
We prepare high-filling two-component arrays of up to fifty fermionic atoms in optical tweezers, with the atoms in the ground motional state of each tweezer. Using a stroboscopic technique, we configure the arrays in various two-dimensional geometries with negligible Floquet heating. Full spin- and density-resolved readout of individual sites allows us to post-select near-zero entropy initial states for fermionic quantum simulation. We prepare a correlated state in a two-by-two tunnel-coupled Hubbard plaquette, demonstrating all the building blocks for realizing a programmable fermionic quantu…

Response functions are a fundamental aspect of physics; they represent the link between experimental observations and the underlying quantum many-body state. However, this link is often under-appreciated, as the Lehmann formalism for obtaining response functions in linear response has no direct link to experiment. Within the context of quantum computing, and by using a linear response framework, we restore this link by making the experiment an inextricable part of the quantum simulation. This method can be frequency- and momentum-selective, avoids limitations on operators that can be directly …
Fermionic natural occupation numbers (NON) do not only obey Pauli's famous exclusion principle but are even further restricted to a polytope by the generalized Pauli constraints, conditions which follow from the fermionic exchange statistics. Whenever given NON are pinned to the polytope's boundary the corresponding $N$-fermion quantum state $|Ψ_N\rangle$ simplifies due to a selection rule. We show analytically and numerically for the most relevant settings that this rule is stable for NON close to the boundary, if the NON are non-degenerate. In case of degeneracy a modified selection rule is …
