We study different properties of an anti-Hermitian Yukawa interaction, motivated by a scenario of radiative anomalous generation of masses for the right-handed sterile neutrinos. The model, involving either a pseudo-scalar or a scalar, is consistent both at the classical and quantum levels, and particular attention is given to its properties under improper Lorentz transformations. The path integral is consistently defined with a Euclidean signature, and we discuss the energetics of the model, which show that no dynamical mass generation can occur, unless extra interactions are considered.
In this mini review, we discuss some recent developments regarding properties of (quantum) field-theory models containing anti-Hermitian Yukawa interactions between pseudoscalar fields (axions) and Dirac (or Majorana) fermions. Specifically, after motivating physically such interactions, in the context of string-inspired low-energy effective field theories, involving right-handed neutrinos and axion fields, we proceed to discuss their formal consistency within the so-called Parity-Time-reversal(PT)-symmetry framework, as well as dynamical mass generation, induced by the Yukawa interactions, fo…
We show that a large CP asymmetry in hyperon decays can be naturally realized in the framework of SUSY models. The possibility is implemented by the hermiticities of Yukawa and A matrices. And also, the observed values of $ε$ and $ε'$ are explained.
Working within the context of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics, we begin by describing a non-Hermitian extension of QED that is both Lorentz invariant and consistent with unitarity. We show that the non-Hermitian Dirac mass matrix of this theory exhibits an exceptional point, corresponding to an effectively massless theory whose conserved current is either right- or left-chiral dominated. With this inspiration, we are able to construct a non-Hermitian model of light Dirac neutrino masses from Hermitian and anti-Hermitian Yukawa couplings that are both of order unity. We finish by highlighting po…
We discuss dynamical mass generation for fermions and pseudoscalar fields (axion-like particles (ALP)), in the context of effective theories containing Yukawa type interactions between the fermions and ALPs. We discuss both Hermitian and non-Hermitian Yukawa interactions, which are motivated in the context of some scenarios for radiative (anomalous) Majorana sterile neutrino masses in some effective field theories. The latter contain shift-symmetry breaking Yukawa interactions between sterile neutrinos and ALPs. We show that, for a Hermitian Yukawa interaction, there is no (pseudo)scalar dynam…
We emphasize the crucial r\^ ole played by non-factorizable phases in the analysis of the Yukawa flavour structure performed in weak bases with Hermitian mass matrices and with vanishing $(1,1)$ entries. We show that non-factorizable phases are important in order to generate a sufficiently large $\sin 2 β$. A method is suggested to reconstruct the flavour structure of Yukawa couplings from input experimental data both in this Hermitian basis and in a non-Hermitian basis with a maximal number of texture zeros. The corresponding Froggatt--Nielsen patterns are presented in both cases.
We analyse the CP violation in supersymmetric models with Hermitian Yukawa and trilinear couplings. We show that Hermitian Yukawa matrices can be implemented in supersymmetric models with SU(3) flavor symmetry. An important feature of this class of models is that the supersymmetric contributions to the EDM of the neutron and mercury atom are suppressed. In this framework, epsilon_K can be saturated by a small non--universality of the soft scalar masses through the gluino contribution. We perform a detailed analysis for the supersymmetric contributions to epsilon'/epsilon. Although, the gluino …
We extend the study of a previous publication \cite{amsot} on Schwinger-Dyson dynamical mass generation for fermions and pseudoscalar fields (axion-like particles (ALP)), in field theories containing Yukawa type interactions between the fermions and ALPs, by incorporating anomaly terms and/or (constant) axial background fields. The latter are linked to some Lorentz (and CPT) violating scenarios for leptogenesis in the early Universe. We discuss both Hermitian and non-Hermitian Yukawa interactions, anomaly terms and axial backgrounds, which are all motivated in the context of some scenarios for…
We study the non-Hermitian extension of the Lagrangian of the Standard Model extended by singlet right-handed heavy neutrinos. The Yukawa coupling matrices comprise of hermitian and non-hermitian components and the neutrino mass eigenvalues are calculated for three generation case. The increased number of unknown parameters in the theory due to non-hermitian nature of coupling matrices impose problem for its productiveness. Hence we apply four zero texture for the Yukawa matrices. We consider the normal hierarchy of neutrino mass ordering and find the mixing angles and Dirac CP violating phase…
A nonperturbative Schwinger-Dyson analysis of mass generation is presented for a non-Hermitian PT-symmetric field theory in four dimensions of an axion coupled to a Dirac fermion. The model is motivated by phenomenological considerations. The axion has a quartic self-coupling $λ$ and a Yukawa coupling $g$ to the fermion. The Schwinger-Dyson equations are derived for the model with generic couplings. In the non-Hermitian case there is an additional nonperturbative contribution to the scalar mass. In a simplified rainbow analysis the solutions for the SD equations, are given for different regimes …
The differential rate of the decay of the Higgs boson ($h$) to a pair of $τ$ leptons with their subsequent decay in the $τ^-\to π^- ν_τ$ and $τ^+\to π^+{\bar ν}_τ$ channels is studied. The Yukawa interaction between the Higgs boson and the $τ$ leptons is assumed to include scalar ($S$) and pseudoscalar ($PS$) couplings. Angular distributions of the pions in the $h\toτ^- τ^+\toπ^-ν_τ\,π^+{\bar ν}_τ$ decay are considered. For real values of the $S$ and $PS$ couplings, this decay is known to be a source of information on $\mathcal{CP}$ violation in the $h ττ$ interaction. In the present paper, th…
We investigate the impact of operators of higher canonical dimension on the lower Higgs mass consistency bound by means of generalized Higgs-Yukawa interactions. Analogously to higher-order operators in the bare Higgs potential in an effective field theory approach, the inclusion of higher-order Yukawa interactions, e.g., $ϕ^3\barψψ$, leads to a diminishing of the lower Higgs mass bound and thus to a shift of the scale of new physics towards larger scales by a few orders of magnitude without introducing a metastability in the effective Higgs potential. We observe that similar renormalization g…
Non-Hermitian quantum theories have been applied in many other areas of physics. In this note, I will briefly review recent developments in the formulation of non-Hermitian quantum field theories, highlighting features that are unique compared to Hermitian theories. I will touch upon their crucial discrete symmetries and how continuous symmetry properties are borne out, including Noether's theorem, the Goldstone theorem and the Englert-Brout-Higgs mechanism. As examples, I will describe a non-Hermitian supersymmetric theory, and draw attention to non-Hermitian deformations of (scalar) QED, the…
The fundamental constraint on two Higgs doublet models comes from the requirement of sufficiently suppressing flavor-changing neutral currents. There are various standard approaches for dealing with this problem, but they all tend to share a common feature; all of the Higgs doublets couple very weakly to the first generation quarks. Here we consider a simple two Higgs doublet model which is able to have large couplings to the first generation, while also being safe from flavor constraints. We assume only that there is an SU(3)_f flavor symmetry which is respected by the couplings of one of the…
The issue of Hermiticity of the Higgs boson interaction with fermions is addressed. A model for non-Hermitian Yukawa interaction is proposed and approximation of one fermion generation is considered. Symmetry properties of the corresponding $h f \bar{f}$ Lagrangian with respect to the discrete P, C and T transformations are analyzed, and the modified Dirac equation for the free fermion is studied. Longitudinal polarization of the fermions in the decay $h \to f \bar{f}$, which arises due to non-Hermiticity of the $h f \bar{f}$ interaction, is discussed. It is suggested to study effects of this …
An extension of QED is considered in which the Dirac fermion has both Hermitian and anti-Hermitian mass terms, as well as both vector and axial-vector couplings to the gauge field. Gauge invariance is restored when the Hermitian and anti-Hermitian masses are of equal magnitude, and the theory reduces to that of a single massless Weyl fermion. An analogous non-Hermitian Yukawa theory is considered, and it is shown that this model can explain the smallness of the light-neutrino masses and provide an additional source of leptonic CP violation.
The production of lepton pairs in the Higgs boson decay $h \to \ell^+ \ell^- γ$ is studied. The emphasis is put on the structure of the Higgs boson interaction with the fermions. This interaction is chosen as a mixture of the scalar and pseudo-scalar couplings, and, in addition, it is supposed to be non-Hermitian. We study prediction of this model for the observables in the $h \to \ell^+ \ell^- γ$ decay for the $e^+ e^-$, $μ^+ μ^-$ and $τ^+ τ^-$ pairs. The differential decay width and lepton forward-backward asymmetry are calculated as functions of the dilepton invariant mass for several sets …
We review how to describe a field theory that includes a non-Hermitian mass term in the region of parameter space where the Lagrangian is $PT$-symmetric. The discrete symmetries of the system are essential for understanding the consistency of the model, and the link between conserved current and variation of the Lagrangian has to be revisited in the case of continuous symmetries.
We present a Lorentz-symmetry violating Lagrangian for free fermions, which is local but not Hermitian, whereas the corresponding Hamiltonian is Hermitian but not local. A specific feature of the model is that the dispersion relation is relativistic in both the IR and in the UV, but not in an intermediate regime, set by a given mass scale. The consistency of the model is shown by the study of properties expected in analogy with the Dirac Lagrangian.
Renormalisation group flows connecting a $4-ε$ dimensional Hermitian field theory to a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric theory for a fermion coupled to an axion
Anti-Hermitian mass terms are considered, in addition to Hermitian ones, for PT-symmetric complex-scalar and fermionic field theories. In both cases, the Lagrangian can be written in a manifestly symmetric form in terms of the PT-conjugate variables, allowing for an unambiguous definition of the equations of motion. After discussing the resulting constraints on the consistency of the variational procedure, we show that the invariance of a non-Hermitian Lagrangian under a continuous symmetry transformation does not imply the existence of a corresponding conserved current. Conserved currents exi…
We explore the physical consequences of a scenario when the standard Hermitian Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model spontaneously develops a non-Hermitian PT-symmetric ground state via dynamical generation of an anti-Hermitian Yukawa coupling. We demonstrate the emergence of a noncompact non-Hermitian (NH) symmetry group which characterizes the NH ground state. We show that the NH group is spontaneously broken both in weak- and strong-coupling regimes. In the chiral limit at strong coupling, the NH ground state develops inhomogeneity, which breaks the translational symmetry. At weak coupling, the N…
Computation of Yukawa couplings, determining superpotentials as well as the Kähler metric, with oblique (non-commuting) fluxes in magnetized brane constructions is an interesting unresolved issue, in view of the importance of such fluxes for obtaining phenomenologically viable models. In order to perform this task, fermion (scalar) wavefunctions on toroidally compactified spaces are presented for general fluxes, parameterized by Hermitian matrices with eigenvalues of arbitrary signatures. We also give explicit mappings among fermion wavefunctions, of different internal chiralities on the tori,…
We propose the "supersymmetric (SUSY) Yukawa sum rule", a relationship between physical masses and mixing angles of the third-generation quarks and squarks. The sum rule follows directly from a relation between quark and squark couplings to the Higgs, enforced by SUSY. It is exactly this relation that ensures the cancellation of the one-loop quadratic divergence in the Higgs mass from the top sector. Testing the sum rule experimentally would thus provide a powerful consistency check on SUSY as the solution to the gauge hierarchy problem. While such a test will most likely have to await a futur…
We study a system of fermions interacting with a scalar field, in 4+1 dimensions where the 5th dimension is compactified, using an exact functional method, where quantum fluctuations are controlled by the amplitude of the bare fermion mass. The integration of our equationsleads to the properties of the dressed Yukawa coupling, that we study at one-loop so as to show the consistency of the approach. Beyond one loop, the non-perturbative aspect of the method gives us the possibility to derive the dynamical fermion mass. The result obtained is cut off independent and this derivation proposes an a…
The light-cone Fock state representation of composite systems has number of remarkable properties and for systems such as hadrons they have exact representation for angular momentum, energy momentum tensor. We investigate the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors with zero momentum transfer in QED and Yukawa theory. To improve the convergence near the end points of $x$ qualitatively as well as to check the consistency of the model, we differentiate the wavefunction w.r.t. bound state mass. We test the behaviour of the anomalous gravitomagnetic moment, which follows directly from the L…
Testing the stability of the electroweak vacuum in any extension of the Standard Model Higgs sector is of great importance to verify the consistency of the theory. Multi-scalar extensions as the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model generically lead to unstable configurations in certain regions of parameter space. An exact minimization of the scalar potential is rather an impossible analytic task. To give handy analytic constraints, a specific direction in field space has to be considered which is a simplification that tends to miss excluded regions, however good to quickly check parameter poi…
A gamma-ray excess from the galactic center consistent with line emission around 130 GeV was recently found in the Fermi-LAT data. Although the Fermi-LAT Collaboration has not confirmed its significance, such a signal would be a clear signature of Dark Matter annihilation. Until now, there have been many attempts to explain the excess by Dark Matter. However these efforts tend to give too-small cross sections into photons if consistency with the correct thermal relic density of Dark Matter is required. In this letter, we consider a simple Yukawa interaction that can be compatible with both asp…
We present an updated assessment of the viability of t-b-tau Yukawa coupling unification in supersymmetric models. For the superpotential Higgs mass parameter mu>0, we find unification to less than 1% is possible, but only for GUT scale scalar mass parameter m_{16}~8-20 TeV, and small values of gaugino mass m_{1/2}<400 GeV. Such models require that a GUT scale mass splitting exists amongst Higgs scalars with m_{H_u}^2<m_{H_d}^2. Viable solutions lead to a radiatively generated inverted scalar mass hierarchy, with third generation and Higgs scalars being lighter than other sfermions. These mode…
We consider a 1+3 dimensional spin system. The spin-wave (magnon) field is described by the O(3) non-linear sigma model with a symmetry-breaking potential. This interacts with a slow spin SU(2) doublet Schrodinger fermion. The interaction is described by a generalized nonperturbative Yukawa coupling, and the self-consistency condition is solved with the aid of a non-relativistic Gribov equation. When the Yukawa coupling is sufficiently strong, the solution exhibits supercriticality and soft confinement, in a way that is quite analogous to Gribov's light-quark confinement theory. The solution c…
We investigate a scenario in a supersymmetric SO(10) Grand Unified Theory in which the fermion mass matrices are generated by renormalizable Yukawa couplings of the $\mathbf{10} \oplus \mathbf{120} \oplus \bar{\mathbf{126}}$ representation of scalars. We reduce the number of parameters by assuming spontaneous CP violation and a $\mathbbm{Z}_2$ family symmetry, leading to nine real Yukawa coupling constants for three families. Since in the ``minimal SUSY SO(10) GUT'' an intermediate seesaw scale is ruled out and our scenario lives in the natural extension of this theory by the $\mathbf{120}$, w…
The flavor problem, neutrino physics and the fermion mass hierarchy are important motivations to extend the Standard Model into the TeV scale. A new family non-universal extension is presented with three Higgs doublets, one Higgs singlet and one scalar dark matter candidate. Exotic fermions are included in order to cancel chiral anomalies and to allow family non-universal $\mathrm{U(1)}_{X}$ charges. By implementing an additional $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry the Yukawa coupling terms are suited in such a way that the fermion mass hierarchy is obtained without fine-tuning. The neutrino sector incl…
We study implications of large lepton-quark-leptoquark couplings for direct leptoquark searches at Large Hadron Collider. We present all existing flavor constraints on the strength of these couplings assuming that leptoquarks under consideration interact exclusively with charged leptons and quarks of the same generation. We find that these leptoquarks can have sizeable couplings to the Standard Model fermions. This insures a self consistency of our study. We discuss the leptoquark production mechanisms at LHC and demonstrate the importance of inclusion of a t-channel pair production and, in pa…
