Any comments will be appreciated. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2002.05535, arXiv:1901.04470, arXiv:2002.12353, arXiv:1809.06251. Introduction is slightly modified according to thankful comments. One thing is fixed regarding the Jordan constant of the binary tetrahedral group
We compute and provide a detailed description on the Jordan constants of the multiplicative subgroup of quaternion algebras over number fields of small degree. As an application, we determine the Jordan constants of the multiplicative subgroup of the endomorphism algebras of simple abelian surfaces over fields of positive characteristic.
A group $G$ is called Jordan if there is a positive integer $J=J_G$ such that every finite subgroup $\mathcal{B}$ of $G$ contains a commutative subgroup $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{B}$ such that $\mathcal{A}$ is normal in $\mathcal{B}$ and the index $[\mathcal{B}:\mathcal{A}] \le J$ (V.L. Popov). In this paper we deal with Jordaness properties of the groups $Bir(X)$ of birational automorphisms of irreducible smooth projective varieties $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. It is known (Yu. Prokhorov - C. Shramov) that $Bir(X)$ is Jordan if $X$ is non-uniruled. On the …
We call a linear operator on a vector space over a field Jordanable if it has a Jordan canonical form. An almost Abelian Lie algebra has only one non-vanishing Lie bracket, which is given by a linear operator. If the latter is Jordanable then we call the almost Abelian Lie algebra Jordanable. The existence of canonical form allows to describe important structural properties of these Lie algebras in explicit terms. Lie subalgebras, ideals, automorphisms and derivations, as well as quadratic Casimir elements are given in explicitly in a suitable basis.
A square complex is a 2-complex formed by gluing squares together. This article is concerned with the fundamental group $Γ$ of certain square complexes of nonpositive curvature, related to quaternion algebras. The abelian subgroup structure of $Γ$ is studied in some detail.
A hypermap is an embedding of a connected hypergraph into an orientable closed surface. A covering between hypermaps is a homomorphism between the embedded hypergraphs which extends to an orientation-preserving covering of the supporting surfaces. A covering of a hypermap onto itself is an automorphism, and a hypermap is regular if its automorphism group acts transitively on the brins. Depending on the algebraic theory of regular hypermaps and hypermap operations, the abelian regular coverings over the quaternion hypermap are investigated. We define normalized multicyclic coverings between reg…
A century ago, Camille Jordan proved that the complex general linear group $GL_n(C)$ has the Jordan property: there is a Jordan constant $C_n$ such that every finite subgroup $H \le GL_n(C)$ has an abelian subgroup $H_1$ of index $[H : H_1] \le C_n$. We show that every connected algebraic group $G$ (which is not necessarily linear) has the Jordan property with the Jordan constant depending only on $\dim \, G$, and that the full automorphism group $Aut(X)$ of every projective variety $X$ has the Jordan property
We prove that an analogue of Jordan's theorem on finite subgroups of general linear groups does not hold for the groups of birational automorphisms of products of an elliptic curve and the projective line. This gives a negative answer to a question of V. L. Popov, arXiv:1001.1311 [math.AG].
Let $x$, $y$ be two integral quaternions of norm $p$ and $l$, respectively, where $p$, $l$ are distinct odd prime numbers. We investigate the structure of $<x,y>$, the multiplicative group generated by $x$ and $y$. Under a certain condition which excludes $<x,y>$ from being free or abelian, we show for example that $<x,y>$, its center, commutator subgroup and abelianization are finitely presented infinite groups. We give many examples where our condition is satisfied and compute as an illustration a finite presentation of the group $<1+j+k, 1+2j>$ having these two generators and seven relation…
We prove that for any closed Lorentz $4$-manifold $(M,g)$ the isometry group $Isom(M,g)$ is Jordan. Namely, there exists a constant $C$ (depending on $M$ and $g$) such that any finite subgroup $Γ\leq Isom(M,g)$ has an abelian subgroup $A\leqΓ$ satisfying $[Γ:A]\leq C$.
Let $\mathcal C$ be a set of finite groups which is closed under taking subgroups and let $d$ and $M$ be positive integers. Suppose that for any $G\in\mathcal C$ whose order is divisible by at most two distinct primes there exists an abelian subgroup $A\subseteq G$ such that $A$ is generated by at most $d$ elements and $[G : A] \le M$. We prove that there exists a positive constant $C_0$ such that any $G \in \mathcal C$ has an abelian subgroup $A$ satisfying $[G : A] \le C_0$, and $A$ can be generated by at most $d$ elements. We also prove some related results. Our proofs use the Classificatio…
In this paper, we describe the Galois module structure of $J=\mathbf{K}^{\times}/\mathbf{K}^{\times p}$, where $\mathbf{K}$ is an extension of a local field $\mathbf{k}$ containing a primitive $p$-th root of unity: for instance, if $\mathbf{K}/\mathbf{k}$ is a $p$-elementary abelian extension, we prove that $J$ is a module of constant Jordan type, with stable Jordan type $[1]^2$, which, in a way, extends the result of J. Mináč and J. Swallow. Also, we take profit from our proof by computing some invariants, which were previously introduced by A. Adem, W. Gao, D. B. Karageuzian and J. Mináč onl…
The Alperin weight conjecture was reduced to simple groups by the work of Navarro, Tiep and Späth. To prove Alperin weight conjecture, it suffices to show that all finite non-abelian simple groups are BAW-good. We reduce the verification of the inductive conditons for groups of Lie type in non-defining characteristic to quasi-isolated blocks.
We show that if $M$ is a compact smooth manifold diffeomorphic to the total space of an orientable $S^2$ bundle over the torus $T^2$, then its diffeomorphism group does not have the Jordan property, i.e., Diff$(M)$ contains a finite subgroup $G_n$ for any natural number $n$ such that every abelian subgroup of $G_n$ has index at leat $n$. This gives a counterexample to an old conjecture of Ghys.
It is proved that every group of the form $G=AB$ with two subgroups $A$ and $B$ each of which is either abelian or has a quasicyclic subgroup of index $2$ is soluble of derived length at most $3$. In particular, if $A$ is abelian and $B$ is a locally quaternion group, this gives a positive answer to Question 18.95 of "Kourovka notebook" posed by A.I.Sozutov.
It is well known that a dense subgroup $G$ of the complex unitary group $U(d)$ cannot be amenable as a discrete group when $d>1$. When $d$ is large enough we give quantitative versions of this phenomenon in connection with certain estimates of random Fourier series on the compact group $\bar G$ that is the closure of $G$. Roughly, we show that if $\bar G$ covers a large enough part of $U(d)$ in the sense of metric entropy then $G$ cannot be amenable. The results are all based on a version of a classical theorem of Jordan that says that if $G$ is finite, or amenable as a discrete group, then $G…
In 1878, Jordan showed that a finite subgroup of GL(n,C) contains an abelian normal subgroup whose index is bounded by a function of n alone. Previously, the author has given precise bounds. Here, we consider analogues for finite linear groups over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic l. A larger normal subgroup must be taken, to eliminate unipotent subgroups and groups of Lie type and characteristic l, and we show that generically the bound is similar to that in characteristic 0 - being (n+1)!, or (n+2)! when l divides (n+2) - given by the faithful representations of minimal…
We prove that for any closed smooth $4$-manifold $X$ there exists a constant $C$ with the property that each finite subgroup $G<Diff(X)$ has a subgroup $N$ which is abelian or nilpotent of class $2$, and which satisfies $[G:N]\leq C$. We give sufficient conditions on $X$ for $Diff(X)$ to be Jordan, meaning that there exists a constant $C$ such that any finite subgroup $G<Diff(X)$ has an abelian subgroup $A$ satisfying $[G:A]\leq C$. Some of these conditions are homotopical, such as having nonzero Euler characteristic or nonzero signature, others are geometric, such as the absence of embedded t…
In 1878, Jordan proved that if a finite group $G$ has a faithful representation of dimension $n$ over $\mathbb{C}$, then $G$ has a normal abelian subgroup with index bounded above by a function of $n$. The same result fails if one replaces $\mathbb{C}$ by a field of positive characteristic, due to the presence of large unipotent and/or Lie type subgroups. For this reason, a long-standing problem in group and representation theory has been to find the "correct analogue" of Jordan's theorem in characteristic $p>0$. Progress has been made in a number of different directions, most notably by Braue…
