It is well known that interatomic or intermolecular interactions driven by two-center electronic dipole-dipole correlations fall off rapidly with the inter-site distance. We show, however, that the effective strength of interatomic reaction channels, which are triggered by a resonant field, can exhibit a nonmonotonous distance dependence, being strongly reduced when the atoms come closer. This surprising result is demonstrated by considering resonant two-center photoionization as an example. Our findings are supported by available experimental data.
Double ionization of an atom by single-photon absorption in the presence of a neighbouring atom is studied. The latter is, first, resonantly photoexcited and, afterwards, transfers the excitation energy radiationlessly to the other atom, leading to its double ionization. The process relies on the combined effect of interatomic and intraatomic electron correlations. It can dominate over the direct double photoionization by several orders of magnitude at interatomic distances up to few nanometers. The relative position of the neighbouring atom is shown to exert a characteristic influence on the …
We demonstrate how the technique of ultrafast resonant x-ray scattering can be applied to imaging dynamics of electronic wave packets in crystals. We study scattering patterns from crystals with electron dynamics in valence bands taking into account that inelastic and elastic scattering events induced by a broad-band probe pulse cannot be separated through the spectroscopy of the scattered photon. As a result, scattering patterns are not determined by the structure factor at the time of measurement, but can encode the instantaneous electron current between scattering atoms. We provide examples…
The recent availability of intense and ultrashort extreme ultraviolet sources opens the possibility to investigate ultrafast electronic relaxation processes in matter in an unprecedented regime. In this work we report on the observation of two-photon excitation of interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in neon dimers using the tunable intense pulses delivered by the free electron laser FERMI@Elettra. The unique characteristics of FERMI (narrow bandwidth, spectral stability, and tunability) allow one to resonantly excite specific ionization pathways and to observe a clear signature of the ICD mechan…
Photoionization of an atom via interatomic correlations to N neighboring atoms may be strongly enhanced due to constructive interference of quantum pathways. The ionization proceeds via resonant photoexcitation of a neighbor atom and subsequent interatomic Coulombic decay. The enhancement can scale with N^2, leading to "super-enhanced photoionization".
Resonant two-photon ionization in a system consisting of two spatially well-separated atoms is studied. Due to two-center electron-electron correlations, the ionization may also proceed through photo-excitation of both atoms with subsequent interatomic Coulombic decay. We show that this channel may dominate the photoionization process and qualitatively change its dependence on the field intensity and the spectra of emitted electrons.
We formulate the theory for a diatomic molecule in a spatially degenerate electronic state interacting with a non-resonant laser field and investigate its rovibrational structure in the presence of the field. We report on \textit{ab initio} calculations employing the double electron attachment intermediate Hamiltonian Fock space coupled cluster method restricted to single and double excitations for all electronic states of the Rb$_2$ molecule up to $5s+5d$ dissociation limit of about 26.000$\,$cm$^{-1}$. In order to correctly predict the spectroscopic behavior of Rb$_2$, we have also calculate…
Resonant electric dipole-dipole interactions between cold Rydberg atoms were observed using microwave spectroscopy. Laser-cooled Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap were optically excited to 45d Rydberg states using a pulsed laser. A microwave pulse transferred a fraction of these Rydberg atoms to the 46p state. A second microwave pulse then drove atoms in the 45d state to the 46d state, and was used as a probe of interatomic interactions. The spectral width of this two-photon probe transition was found to depend on the presence of the 46p atoms, and is due to the resonant electric dipole-dipol…
We study resonant energy transfer in a one-dimensional chain of two to five atoms by analyzing time-dependent probabilities as function of their interatomic distances. The dynamics of the system are first investigated by including the nearest-neighbour interactions and then accounting for all next-neighbour interactions. We find that inclusion of nearest-neighbour interactions in the Hamiltonian for three atoms chain exhibits perdiocity during the energy transfer dynamics, however this behavior displays aperiodicity with the all-neighbour interactions. It shows for the equidistant chains of fo…
We experimentally study resonant light scattering by a one-dimensional randomly filled chain of cold two-level atoms. By a local measurement of the light scattered along the chain, we observe constructive interferences in light-induced dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms. They lead to a shift of the collective resonance despite the average interatomic distance being larger than the wavelength of the light. This result demonstrates that strong collective effects can be enhanced by structuring the geometrical arrangement of the ensemble. We also explore the high intensity regime where a…
Modifications of photoionization arising from resonant electron-electron correlations between neighbouring atoms in an atomic sample are studied. The sample contains atomic species A and B, with the ionization potential of A being smaller than the energy of a dipole-allowed transition in B. The atoms are subject to an external radiation field which is near-resonant with the dipole transition in B. Photoionization of an atom A may thus proceed via a two-step mechanism: photoexcitation in the subsystem of species B, followed by interatomic Coulombic decay. As a basic atomic configuration, we inv…
We present a theory of resonant processes in a frozen gas of atoms interacting via dipole-dipole potentials that vary as $r^{-3}$, where $r$ is the interatomic separation. We supply an exact result for a single atom in a given state interacting resonantly with a random gas of atoms in a different state. The time development of the transition process is calculated both on- and off-resonance, and the linewidth with respect to detuning is obtained as a function of time $t$. We introduce a random spin Hamiltonian to model a dense system of resonators and show how it reduces to the previous model i…
We present a treatment of cold hydrogen-antihydrogen collisions based on the asymptotic properties of atom-antiatom interactions. We derive general formulas for the elastic and inelastic cross sections and for the scattering lengths and analyze their sensitivity to the parameters characterizing the inelasticity of the collision process. Given the inelasticity, we obtain bounds for the complex scattering length. We investigate the influence of strong nuclear forces and the isotope effects in $\bar{\rm H}{\rm H}$ and $\bar{\rm H}{\rm D}$ collisions and demonstrate enhancement of these effects du…
Elastic scattering resonances occurring in ultracold collisions of either bosonic or fermionic polar molecules are investigated. The Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic representation of the two-bodydynamics provides both a qualitative classification scheme and a quantitative WKB quantization condition that predicts several sequences of resonant states. It is found that the near-threshold energy dependence of ultracold collision cross sections varies significantly with the particle exchange symmetry, with bosonic systems showing much smoother energy variations than their fermionic counterparts. Resonan…
Three-body systems with large scattering length display universal phenomena associated with a discrete scaling symmetry. These phenomena include resonant enhancement of three-body loss rates when an Efimov three-body resonance is at the scattering threshold. In particular, there can be resonant peaks in the atom-dimer relaxation rate for large positive scattering length. We improve upon earlier studies and calculate the atom-dimer relaxation rate as a function of temperature using a Bose-Einstein distribution for the thermal average. As input, we use calculations of the atom-dimer scattering p…
We unravel the out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamics of a few interacting bosonic clouds in a two-dimensional asymmetric double-well potential at the resonant tunneling scenario. At the single-particle level of resonant tunneling, particles tunnel under the barrier from, typically, the ground-state in the left well to an excited state in the right well, i.e., states of different shapes and properties are coupled when their one-particle energies coincide. In two spatial dimensions, two types of resonant tunneling processes are possible, to which we refer to as longitudinal and transversal resonan…
Nowadays nanotechnology allows to scale-down various important devices (sensors, chips, fibres, etc), and, thus, opens up new horizon for their applications. Nevertheless, the efficiency most of them is still based on the fundamental physical phenomena, such as resonances. Thus, the understanding of the resonance phenomena will be beneficial. One of the well-known examples is the resonant enhancement of the transmission known as Breit-Wigner resonances, which can be described by a Lorentzian function. But, in many physical systems the scattering of waves involves propagation along different pa…
