Resonant two-photon ionization in a system consisting of two spatially well-separated atoms is studied. Due to two-center electron-electron correlations, the ionization may also proceed through photo-excitation of both atoms with subsequent interatomic Coulombic decay. We show that this channel may dominate the photoionization process and qualitatively change its dependence on the field intensity and the spectra of emitted electrons.
High-resolution photoelectron momentum distributions of Xe atoms ionized by 800-nm linearly polarized laser fields have been traced at intensities from 1.1*1013 to 3.5*1013W/cm2 using velocity-map imaging techniques. At certain laser intensities, the momentum spectrum exhibits a distinct double-ring structure for low-order above-threshold ionization, which appears to be absent at lower or higher laser intensities. By investigating the intensity-resolved photoelectron energy spectrum, we find that this double-ring structure originates from resonant multiphoton ionization involving multiple Rydb…
Double ionization of an atom by single-photon absorption in the presence of a neighbouring atom is studied. The latter is, first, resonantly photoexcited and, afterwards, transfers the excitation energy radiationlessly to the other atom, leading to its double ionization. The process relies on the combined effect of interatomic and intraatomic electron correlations. It can dominate over the direct double photoionization by several orders of magnitude at interatomic distances up to few nanometers. The relative position of the neighbouring atom is shown to exert a characteristic influence on the …
Photoelectron angular distributions following the non-resonant two-photon K-shell ionization of neutral atoms are studied theoretically. Using the independent particle approximation and relativistic second-order perturbation theory, the contributions of screening and relativistic effects to the photoelectron angular distribution are evaluated. A simple nonrelativistic expression is presented for the angle-differential cross section in dipole approximation for two-photon ionization by elliptically polarized photons, and its limitations are analyzed numerically. Moreover, we show that screening …
The non-resonant two-photon one-electron ionization of neutral atoms is studied theoretically in the framework of relativistic second-order perturbation theory and independent particle approximation. In particular, the importance of relativistic and screening effects in the total two-photon ionization cross section is investigated. Detailed computations have been carried out for the K-shell ionization of neutral Ne, Ge, Xe, and U atoms. The relativistic effects significantly decrease the total cross section, for the case of U, for example, they reduce the total cross section by a factor of two…
In this paper, we theoretically study x-ray multiphoton ionization dynamics of heavy atoms taking into account relativistic and resonance effects. When an atom is exposed to an intense x-ray pulse generated by an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL), it is ionized to a highly charged ion via a sequence of single-photon ionization and accompanying relaxation processes, and its final charge state is limited by the last ionic state that can be ionized by a single-photon ionization. If x-ray multiphoton ionization involves deep inner-shell electrons in heavy atoms, energy shifts by relativistic effect…
We provide a detailed quantitative study of the possible role of a small admixture of harmonics on resonant two-photon ionization. The motivation comes from the occasional presence of 2nd and 3rd harmonics in FEL radiation. We obtain the dependence of ionic yields on the intensity of the fundamental, the percentage of 2nd harmonic and the detuning of the fundamental from resonance. Having examined the cases of one and two intermediate resonances, we arrive at results of general validity and global behavior, showing that even a small amount of harmonic may seem deceptively innocuous.
We theoretically study the pulse-width dependence of the photoelectron angular distribution (PAD) from the resonance-enhanced two-photon single ionization of He by femtosecond ($\lesssim 20$ fs) extreme-ultraviolet pulses, based on the time-dependent perturbation theory and simulations with the full time-dependent Schrödinger equation. In particular, we focus on the competition between resonant and nonresonant ionization paths, which leads to the relative phase $δ$ between the $S$ and $D$ wave packets distinct from the corresponding scattering phase shift difference. When the spectrally broade…
Resonance ionization laser ion sources are efficient and element selective ion sources, which are particularly well suited for radioactive ion beam facilities. Using TRIUMF's off-line laser ion source test stand with a system of tunable titanium sapphire (Ti:Sa) lasers, laser resonance ionization schemes for lutetium and praseodymium have been investigated with a particular interest to autoionizing states. New ionization schemes via Rydberg states and autoionizing states were found. Their investigation and comparison of ion yields at the off-line test stand will be discussed, and the data of o…
We study the resonant sequential two-photon ionization of neutral atoms by a combination of twisted- and plane-wave light within a fully relativistic framework. In particular, the ionization of an isotropic ensemble of neutral sodium atoms ($Z = 11$) from their ground $3^{2}S_{1/2}$ state via the $3^{2}P_{3/2}$ level is considered. We investigate in details the influence of the kinematic parameters of incoming twisted radiation on the photoelectron angular distribution and the circular dichroism. Moreover we study the influence of the geometry of the process on these quantities. This is perfor…
We study resonant two-photon ionization of helium atoms via the $1s3p$, $1s4p$ and $1s5p^1$P$_1$ states using the 15$^\mathrm{th}$ harmonic of a titanium-sapphire laser for the excitation and a weak fraction of the laser field for the ionization. The phase of the photoelectron wavepackets is measured by an attosecond interferometric technique, using the 17$^\mathrm{th}$ harmonic. We perform experiments with angular resolution using a velocity map imaging spectrometer and with high energy resolution using a magnetic bottle electron spectrometer. Our results are compared to calculations using th…
Relativistic effects in the non-resonant two-photon K-shell ionization of neutral atoms are studied theoretically within the framework of second-order perturbation theory. The non-relativistic results are compared with the relativistic calculations in the dipole and no-pair approximations as well as with the complete relativistic approach. The calculations are performed in both velocity and length gauges. Our results show a significant decrease of the total cross section for heavy atoms as compared to the non-relativistic treatment, which is mainly due to the relativistic wavefunction contract…
The ionization of atoms with sequences of attosecond pulses gives rise to excited ionic states that are entangled with the emitted photoelectron. Still, the ionic ensemble preserves some coherence that can be controlled through the laser parameters. In helium, control of the $2s/2p$ He$^+$ coherence is mediated by the autoionizing states below the $N=2$ threshold [Phys. Rev. Res. {\bf 3}, 023233 (2021)]. In the present work we study the role of the resonances both below and above the $N=3$ threshold on the coherence of the $N=3$ He$^+$ ion, in the attosecond pump-probe ionization of the helium…
It is shown that it is feasible to use ultrashort time delay between two XUV femtosecond pulses in order to control two photon resonant ionization. The proposal is demonstrated on the spectrum of Helium, in terms of nonperturbative solutions of the time dependent Schroedinger equation. Comparison with results from second order time dependent perturbation theory provides additional insight.
We theoretically study multiphoton ionization of the Ca atom irradiated by the second (photon energy 3.1 eV) and third (photon energy 4.65 eV) harmonics of Ti:sapphire laser pulses (photon energy 1.55 eV). Because of the dense energy level structure the second and third harmonics of a Ti:sapphire laser are nearly single-photon resonant with the ${4s4p}$ $^1P^o$ and ${4s5p}$ $^1P^o$ states, respectively. Although two-photon ionization takes place through the near-resonant intermediate states with the same symmetry in both cases, it turns out that there are significant differences between them. …
Photoionization of an atom $A$, in the presence of a neighboring atom $B$, can proceed via resonant excitation of $B$ with subsequent energy transfer to $A$ through two-center electron-electron correlation. We demonstrate that this two-center mechanism can strongly outperform direct photoionization at nanometer internuclear distances and possesses characteristic features in its time development and the spectrum of emitted electrons.
We present a theoretical study of the photoelectron attosecond beating at the basis of RABBIT (Reconstruction of Attosecond Beating By Interference of Two-photon transitions) in the presence of autoionizing states. We show that, as a harmonic traverses a resonance, its sidebands exhibit a peaked phase shift as well as a modulation of the beating frequency itself. Furthermore, the beating between two resonant paths persists even when the pump and the probe pulses do not overlap, thus providing a sensitive non-holographic interferometric means to reconstruct coherent metastable wave packets. We …

We study resonant two-color two-photon ionization of Helium via the 1s3p 1P1 state. The first color is the 15th harmonic of a tunable titanium sapphire laser, while the second color is the fundamental laser radiation. Our method uses phase-locked high-order harmonics to determine the {\it phase} of the two-photon process by interferometry. The measurement of the two-photon ionization phase variation as a function of detuning from the resonance and intensity of the dressing field allows us to determine the intensity dependence of the transition energy.
Ionization of light atoms and ions during the nuclear $β^{-}$-decay is considered. To determine the final state probabilities of electron ionization we have developed a procedure based on the natural orbital expansions for the bound state wave functions of all atoms/ions involved in this process.
We present a theory illuminating the cross-over from strong-field tunnelling ionization to weak-field multiphoton ionization in the interaction of a classical laser field with a hydrogen atom. A simple formula is derived in which the ionization amplitude appears as a product of two separate amplitudes. The first describes the initial polarization of the atom by virtual multiphoton absorption and the second the subsequent tunnelling out of the polarized atom. Tunnelling directly from the ground state and multiphoton absorption without tunnelling appear naturally as the limits of the theory.
We study the field-ionization threshold behavior when a Rydberg atom is ionized by a short single-cycle pulse field. Both hydrogen and sodium atoms are considered. The required threshold field amplitude is found to scale \emph{inversely} with the binding energy when the pulse duration becomes shorter than the classical Rydberg period, and, thus, more weakly bound electrons require larger fields for ionization. This threshold scaling behavior is confirmed by both 3D classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations and numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. More surprisingly, t…
Elliptical dichroism is known in atomic photoionization as the difference in the photoelectron angular distributions produced in nonlinear ionization of atoms by left- and right-handed elliptically polarized light. We theoretically demonstrate that the maximum dichroism |Δ_{ED}|=1 always appears in two-photon ionization of any atom if the photon energy is tuned in so that the electron emission is dominantly determined by two intermediate resonances. We propose the two-photon ionization of atomic helium in order to demonstrate this remarkable phenomenon. The maximum elliptical dichroism could b…
The tunneling ionization of exotic atoms such as muonic hydrogen, muonium and positronium in a strong laser field of circular polarization is investigated taking into account the impact of the motion of the center of mass on the the tunneling ionization dynamics. The momentum partition between the ionization products is deduced. The effect of the center of mass motion for the momentum distribution of the ionization components is determined. The effect scales with the ratio of the electron (muon) to the atomic core masses and is nonnegligible for exotic atoms, while being insignificant for comm…
We demonstrate kinematically complete measurements on frustrated double ionization of argon atoms in strong laser fields with a reaction microscope. We found that the electron trapping probability after strong field double ionization is much higher than that after strong field single ionization, especially in case of high laser intensity. The retrieved electron momentum distributions of frustrated double ionization show a clear transition from the nonsequential to the sequential regime, similar to those of strong field double ionization. The dependence of electron momentum width on the laser i…
The ionization dynamics of a two-electron atom in an attosecond XUV-infrared pump-probe experiment is simulated by solving the time-dependent two-electron Schrödinger equation. A dramatic change of the double ionization (DI) yield with variation of the pump-probe delay is reported and the governing role of electron-electron correlations is shown. The results allow for a direct control of the DI yield and of the relative strength of double and single ionization.
Target ionization processes of alkali atoms by Positronium impact are investigated. Calculations are performed in the frame work of model potential formalism using the Coulomb distorted eikonal approximation. Interesting qualitative features are noted both in the scattered Ps and the ejected electron distributions in differential as well as double differential levels of the collision cross sections.
We demonstrate the control of $^4$He(2$^3$S$_1$)-$^7$Li(2$^2$S$_{1/2}$) chemi-ionization reactions by all-optical electron-spin-state preparation of both atomic species prior to the collision process. Our results demonstrate that chemi-ionization is strongly suppressed (enhanced) for non-spin-conserving (spin-conserving) collisions at thermal energies. These findings are in good agreement with a model based on spin angular momentum coupling of the prepared atomic states to the quasi-molecular states. Small deviations from the model indicate the contribution of the $^4Σ^+$ channel to the reacti…
We demonstrate the controlled creation of a $\mathrm{^{174}Yb^{2+}}$ ion by photo-ionizing $\mathrm{^{174}Yb^+}$ with weak continuous-wave lasers at ultraviolet wavelengths. The photo-ionization is performed by resonantly exciting transitions of the $\mathrm{^{174}Yb^+}$ ion in three steps. Starting from an ion crystal of two laser-cooled $\mathrm{^{174}Yb^+}$ ions localized in a radio-frequency trap, the verification of the ionization process is performed by characterizing the properties of the resulting mixed-species ion-crystal. The obtained results facilitate fundamental studies of physics…
Collisional ionization between two Rydberg atoms in relative motion is examined. A classical trajectory Monte Carlo method is used to determine the cross sections associated with Penning ionization. The dependence of the ionization cross section on the magnitude and the direction of orbital angular momentum of the electrons and the direction of the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector of the electrons is studied. For a given magnitude of angular momentum, there can exist a difference of a factor of up to $\sim2.5$ in the ionization cross section between the orientation with the highest and the lowest ion…
For a model atom with the $p^3$ valence shell we construct consistent three- and two-active electrons models enabling their direct comparison. Within these models, we study the influence of the third active electron on the double ionization yield in strong femtosecond laser fields. We reveal proportionality between double ionization signals obtained with both models in the field intensity region where non-sequential ionization dominates. We derive analytically a correspondence rule connecting the double ionization yields obtained within the three- and two-active electrons models.
We present a theoretical method for calculating multiphoton ionization amplitudes and cross sections of few-electron atoms. The present approach is based on an extraction of partial wave amplitudes from a scattering wave function, which is calculated by solving a system of driven Schroedinger equations. The extraction relies on a description of partial waves in terms of a small number of Coulomb waves with fixed wave numbers. The method can be used for photon energies below and above the ionization threshold and to treat resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization. We use it to calculate two-, t…
An extension of the analytical model of Talukder et al (Int. J. Mass Spectrom. 269 (2008) 118) is proposed to estimate electron impact single L- and M-shell ionization cross sections of atoms with incident energy from threshold to ultra-relativistic range. Comparisons are made with other theoretical calculations. It is found that this model agrees well with the experimental data and quantum calculations.
We discuss the possibility of non-exponential tunneling ionization of atoms irradiated by intense laser field. This effect can occur at times, which are greater than the lifetime of a system under consideration. The mechanism for non-exponential depletion of an initial quasi-stationary state is the cutting of the energy spectrum of final continuous states at long times. We first consider the known examples of cold emission of electrons from metal, tunneling alpha-decay of atomic nuclei, spontaneous decay in two-level systems and the single-photon atomic ionization by a weak electromagnetic fie…
The electron impact ionization of atomic hydrogen is calculated for incident elrctron energy 76.46 eV. The Hartree-Fock approximation is used to calculate the initial state which includes both bound and continum wave functions. The final state continuum electron wave functions are obtained in the potential of hydrogen ion. The interaction between the two final state continuum electrons is approximated with the screening potential determined variationally.
We consider an analytic approach to the elucidation of the role played by Coulomb interaction in the formation of the spectrum and angular distributions of the electrons produced by above threshold ionization of the atoms. Our approach is based on allowance for the multiple scattering of a photoelectron by the Coulomb potential of the residual ion, with pickup of a field photon in each scattering act. The amplitude of a process with direct ionization of the atom and subsequent scattering of the photoelectron in the continuum by the Coulomb potential of the residual ion are found.
Expression for the probability of the spontaneous emission of high-order harmonics when the emitter phases are synchronized and are obtained in the region where the multiphoton approximation is applicable to the description of the ionization of an atom (where the adiabaticity parameter satisfies gamma > 1). The dependence of this probability on the main parameters of the pump wave and the atomic medium is established. Criteria for observing emission are formulated with the consideration of phase locking.
The results of a theoretical investigation of prompt many-body ionization are reported. Our calculations address an experiment that reported ionization in Rydberg gases for densities two orders of magnitude less than expected from ionization between pairs of atoms. The authors argued that the results were due to the simultaneous interaction between many atoms. We performed classical calculations for many interacting Rydberg atoms with the ions fixed in space and have found that the many atom interaction does allow ionization at lower densities than estimates from two atom interactions. However…
We consider single ionization of lithium atom in collisions with $p$ and O$^{8+}$ projectiles. Doubly differential cross sections for ionization are calculated within a relativistic non-perturbative approach. Comparisons with the recent measurements and theoretical predictions are made.
We theoretically study frustrated double ionization (FDI) of atoms subjected to intense circularly polarized laser pulses using a three-dimensional classical model. We find a novel "knee" structure of FDI probability as a function of intensity, which is similar to the intensity dependence of nonsequential double ionization probability. The observation of FDI is more favourable when using targets with low ionization potentials and short driving laser wavelengths. This is attributed to the crucial role of recollision therein, which can be experimentally inferred from the photoelectron momentum d…
