We derive upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the Kirchhoff Laplacian on a compact metric graph depending on the graph's genus g. These bounds can be further improved if $g = 0$, i.e. if the metric graph is planar. Our results are based on a spectral correspondence between the Kirchhoff Laplacian and a particular a certain combinatorial weighted Laplacian. In order to take advantage of this correspondence, we also prove new estimates for the eigenvalues of the weighted combinatorial Laplacians that were previously known only in the weighted case.
Let $H_n$ be the linear heptagonal networks with $2n$ heptagons. We study the structure properties and the eigenvalues of the linear heptagonal networks. According to the Laplacian polynomial of $H_n$, we utilize the decomposition theorem. Thus, the Laplacian spectrum of $H_n$ is created by eigenvalues of a pair of matrices: $L_A$ and $L_S$ of order number $5n+1$ and $4n+1$, respectively. On the basis of the roots and coefficients of their characteristic polynomials of $L_A$ and $L_S$, we not only get the explicit forms of Kirchhoff index, but also corresponding total complexity of $H_n$.
Spectral theory has widely used in complex networks and solved some practical problems. In this paper, we investigated the Laplacian and normalized Laplacian spectra of Mobius polyomino networks by using spectral theory. Let Mn denote Mobius polyomino networks (n>=3). As applications of the obtained results, the Kirchhoff index, multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and spanning trees of Mn are obtained. Moreover, it is surprising to find that the multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index of Mn is nine times as much as the Kirchhoff index.
In this paper we prove that the existence of absolutely continuous spectrum of the Kirchhoff Laplacian on a radial metric tree graph together with a finite complexity of the geometry of the tree implies that the tree is in fact eventually periodic. This complements the results by Breuer and Frank in \cite{BreuerFrank2009} in the discrete case as well as for sparse trees in the metric case.
Resistance distance is a novel distance function, also a new intrinsic graph metric, which makes some extensions of ordinary distance. Let On be a linear crossed octagonal graph. Recently, Pan and Li (2018) derived the closed formulas for the Kirchhoff index, multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index and the number of spanning trees of Hn. They pointed that it is interesting to give the explicit formulas for the Kirchhoff and multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff indices of On. Inspired by these, in this paper, two resistance distance-based graph invariants, namely, Kirchhoff and multiplicative degree-K…
We study spectral properties of the standard (also called Kirchhoff) Laplacian and the anti-standard (or anti-Kirchhoff) Laplacian on a finite, compact metric graph. We show that the positive eigenvalues of these two operators coincide whenever the graph is bipartite; this leads to a precise relation between their eigenvalues enumerated with multiplicities and including the possible eigenvalue zero. Several spectral inequalities for, e.g., trees are among the consequences of this. In the second part we study inequalities between standard and Dirichlet eigenvalues in more detail and expose anot…
The eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian of a graph provide information on its topological and structural characteristics and also on some relevant dynamical aspects, specifically in relation to random walks. In this paper we determine the spectra of the normalized Laplacian of iterated triangulations of a generic simple connected graph. As an application, we also find closed-forms for their multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and number of spanning trees.
We consider a non self-adjoint Laplacian on a directed graph with non symmetric edge weights. We analyse spectral properties of this Laplacian under a Kirchhoff assumption. Moreover we establish isoperimet-ric inequalities in terms of the numerical range to show the absence of the essential spectrum of the Laplacian on heavy end directed graphs.
Eigenvalue behavior for the equation -λy"=Vu on the edges of a graph G of final total length, with a non-negative weight function V and under the Kirchhoff matching conditions at the vertices and zero boundary condition at at least one point of G, is studied. It is shown that the eigenvalues satisfy an inequality which involves the length |G| and the total mass corresponding to V but otherwise does not depend on the graph. Applications and generalizations of this result are also discussed.
We investigate spectral properties of Kirchhoff Laplacians on radially symmetric antitrees. This class of metric graphs enjoys a rich group of symmetries, which enables us to obtain a decomposition of the corresponding Laplacian into the orthogonal sum of Sturm--Liouville operators. In contrast to the case of radially symmetric trees, the deficiency indices of the Laplacian defined on the minimal domain are at most one and they are equal to one exactly when the corresponding metric antitree has finite total volume. In this case, we provide an explicit description of all self-adjoint extensions…
We investigate the relationship between one of the classical notions of boundaries for infinite graphs, \emph{graph ends}, and self-adjoint extensions of the minimal Kirchhoff Laplacian on a metric graph. We introduce the notion of \emph{finite volume} for ends of a metric graph and show that finite volume graph ends is the proper notion of a boundary for Markovian extensions of the Kirchhoff Laplacian. In contrast to manifolds and weighted graphs, this provides a transparent geometric characterization of the uniqueness of Markovian extensions, as well as of the self-adjointness of the Gaffney…
In this article, we develop a perturbative technique to construct families of non-isomorphic discrete graphs which are isospectral for the standard (also called normalised) Laplacian and its signless version. We use vertex contractions as a graph perturbation and spectral bracketing with auxiliary graphs which have certain eigenvalues with high multiplicity. There is no need to know explicitly the eigenvalues or eigenfunctions of the corresponding graphs. We illustrate the method by presenting several families of examples of isospectral graphs including fuzzy complete bipartite graphs and subd…
We define and study two new kinds of "effective resistances" based on hubs-biased -- hubs-repelling and hubs-attracting -- models of navigating a graph/network. We prove that these effective resistances are squared Euclidean distances between the vertices of a graph. They can be expressed in terms of the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse of the hubs-biased Laplacian matrices of the graph. We define the analogous of the Kirchhoff indices of the graph based of these resistance distances. We prove several results for the new resistance distances and the Kirchhoff indices based on spectral properties of…
The $k$-parallel subdivision graph $S_k(G)$ is generated from $G$ which each edge of $G$ is replaced by $k$ parallel paths of length 2. The $2k$-parallel subdivision graph $S_{2k}(G)$ is constructed from $G$ which each edge of $G$ is replaced by $k$ parallel paths of length 3. In this paper, the normalized Laplacian spectra of $S_k(G)$ and $S_{2k}(G)$ are given. They turn out that the multiplicities of the corresponding eigenvalues are only determined by $k$. As applications, the expected hitting time, the expected commute time and any two-points resistance distance between vertices $i$ and $j…
Kirchhoff showed that the number of spanning trees of a graph is the spectral determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian divided by the number of vertices; we reframe this result in the quantum graph setting. We prove that the spectral determinant of the Laplace operator on a finite connected metric graph with standard (Neummann-Kirchhoff) vertex conditions determines the number of spanning trees when the lengths of the edges of the metric graph are sufficiently close together. To obtain this result, we analyze an equilateral quantum graph whose spectrum is closely related to spectra of discre…
We introduce a dynamically defined class of unbounded, connected, equilateral metric graphs on which the Kirchhoff Laplacian has zero Lebesgue measure spectrum and a nontrivial singular continuous part. A new local Borg--Marchenko uniqueness result is obtained in order to utilize Kotani theory for aperiodic subshifts satisfying Boshernitzan's condition.
For any finite simple graph G, the hydrogen identity H=L-L^(-1) holds, where H=(d+d^*)^2 is the sign-less Hodge Laplacian defined by sign-less incidence matrix d and where L is the connection Laplacian. Any spectral information about L directly leads to estimates for the Hodge Laplacian H=(d+d^*)^2 and allows to estimate the spectrum of the Kirchhoff Laplacian H_0=d^* d. The hydrogen identity implies that the random walk u(n) = L^n u with integer n solves the one-dimensional Jacobi equation Delta u=H^2 with (Delta u)(n)=u(n+2)-2 u(n)+u(n-2). Every solution is represented by such a reversible p…
We investigate the relation between the eigenvalues of the Laplacian with Kirchhoff vertex conditions on a finite metric graph and a corresponding Titchmarsh-Weyl function (a parameter-dependent Neumann-to-Dirichlet map). We give a complete description of all real resonances, including multiplicities, in terms of the edge lengths and the connectivity of the graph, and apply it to characterize all eigenvalues which are visible for the Titchmarsh-Weyl function.
We define a distance between energy forms on a graph-like metric measure space and on a discrete weighted graph using the concept of quasi-unitary equivalence. We apply this result to metric graphs and graph-like manifolds (e.g. a small neighbourhood of an embedded metric graph) as metric measure spaces with energy forms associated with canonical Laplacians, e.g., the Kirchhoff Laplacian on a metric graph resp. the (Neumann) Laplacian on a manifold (with boundary) and express the distance of the associated energy forms in terms of geometric quantities. We showed in arXiv:1704.00064 that the ap…
We establish a sharp lower bound on the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a metric graph equipped with natural (i.e., continuity and Kirchhoff) vertex conditions in terms of the diameter and the total length of the graph. This extends a result of, and resolves an open problem from, [J. B. Kennedy, P. Kurasov, G. Malenová and D. Mugnolo, Ann. Henri Poincaré 17 (2016), 2439--2473, Section 7.2], and also complements an analogous lower bound for the corresponding eigenvalue of the combinatorial Laplacian on a discrete graph. We also give a family of corresponding lower bounds for th…
We undertake a systematic investigation of the maxima and minima of the eigenfunctions associated with the first nontrivial eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a metric graph equipped with standard (continuity--Kirchhoff) vertex conditions. This is inspired by the famous hot spots conjecture for the Laplacian on a Euclidean domain, and the points on the graph where maxima and minima are achieved represent the generically "hottest" and "coldest" spots of the graph. We prove results on both the number and location of the hot spots of a metric graph, and also present a large number of examples, many o…
