The proton radius puzzle has motivated several new experiments that aim to extract the proton charge radius and resolve the puzzle. Recently PRad, a new electron-proton scattering experiment at Jefferson Lab, reported a proton charge radius of $0.831\pm 0.007_\textnormal{statistical}\pm 0.012_\textnormal{systematic}$. The value was obtained by using a rational function model for the proton electric form factor. We perform a model-independent extraction using $z$-expansion of the proton charge radius from PRad data. We find that the model-independent statistical error is more than 50\% larger compared to the statistical error reported by PRad.
To extract the charge radius of the proton, $r_{p}$, from the electron scattering data, the PRad collaboration at Jefferson Lab has developed a rigorous framework for finding the best functional forms - the fitters - for a robust extraction of $r_{p}$ from a wide variety of sample functions for the range and uncertainties of the PRad data. In this paper we utilize and further develop this framework. Herein we discuss methods for searching for the best fitter candidates as well as a procedure for testing the robustness of extraction of the deuteron charge radius, $r_{d}$, from parametrizations …
Extracting the proton charge radius from electron scattering data requires determining the slope of the charge form factor at $Q^2$ of zero. But as experimental data never reach that limit, numerous methods for making the extraction have been proposed, though often the functions are determined after seeing the data which can lead to confirmation bias. To find functional forms that will allow for a robust extraction of the input radius for a wide variety of functional forms in order to have confidence in the extraction from upcoming low $Q^2$ experimental data such as the Jefferson Lab PRad exp…
We present the first extraction of the transversity distribution in the framework of collinear factorization based on the global analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets and in proton-proton collisions with one transversely polarized proton. The extraction relies on the knowledge of di-hadron fragmentation functions, which are taken from the analysis of electron-positron annihilation data. For the first time, the chiral-odd transversity is extracted from a global analysis similar to what is usually done for the chiral-even spin-averaged a…
We present the first attempt to extract the scalar dipole dynamical polarizabilities from proton real Compton scattering data below pion-production threshold. The theoretical framework combines dispersion relations technique, low-energy expansion and multipole decomposition of the scattering amplitudes. The results are obtained with statistical tools that have never been applied so far to Compton scattering data and are crucial to overcome problems inherent to the analysis of the available data set.
We performed the first simultaneous extraction of the six leading-order proton polarizabilities. We reached this milestone thanks to both new high-quality experimental data and an innovative bootstrap-base fitting method. These new results provide a self-consistent and fundamental benchmark for all future theoretical and experimental polarizability estimates.
In a series of recent publications, different authors produce a wide range of electron radii when reanalyzing electron proton scattering data. In the light of the proton radius puzzle, this is a most unfortunate situation. However, we find flaws in most analyses that result in radii around 0.84 fm. In this paper, we explain our reasoning and try to illustrate the most common pitfalls.

We present a novel method for extracting the proton radius from elastic electron-proton ($ep$) scattering data. The approach is based on interpolation via continued fractions augmented by statistical sampling and avoids any assumptions on the form of function used for the representation of data and subsequent extrapolation onto $Q^2\simeq 0$. Applying the method to extant modern $e p$ data sets, we find that all results are mutually consistent and, combining them, arrive at $r_p=0.847(8)\,$fm. This result compares favourably with values obtained from contemporary measurements of the Lamb shift…
The HERMES collaboration recently reported a reevaluation of the strange-quark parton distribution, $S(x)$, based on kaon production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. Two distinct results on $S(x)$ at the $x> 0.1$ region, one with a sizable magnitude and another with a vanishing content, were reported. We show that the latter result is due to a particular assumption adopted in the analysis. The impact of the new HERMES $S(x)$ result on the extraction of intrinsic light-quark sea in the proton is discussed. Given the large uncertainty in the kaon fragmentation function, we find that …
Systematic differences exist between values of the proton's electric form factors in the low-$Q^2$ region extracted by different experimental and theoretical groups, though they are all making use of basically the same electron-proton scattering data. To try understand the source of these differences, we make use of the analytically well-behaved rational (N=1, M=1) function, a predictive function that can be reasonably used for extrapolations at $Q^{2} \rightarrow 0$. First, we test how well this deceptively simple two-parameter function describes the extremely complex and state-of-the-art dis…

We perform a new analysis of electron-proton scattering data to determine the proton electric and magnetic radii, enforcing model-independent constraints from form factor analyticity. A wide-ranging study of possible systematic effects is performed. An improved analysis is developed that rebins data taken at identical kinematic settings, and avoids a scaling assumption of systematic errors with statistical errors. Employing standard models for radiative corrections, our improved analysis of the 2010 Mainz A1 Collaboration data yields a proton electric radius $r_E = 0.895(20)$ fm and magnetic r…
The transversity was recently extracted from data on the production of hadron pairs in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. This analysis can be conveniently performed in the framework of collinear factorization where the elementary mechanism is represented by the simple product of transversity and of a suitable chiral-odd function describing the fragmentation of a transversely polarized parton into a pair of hadrons inside the same current jet. The same elementary mechanism was predicted long ago to generate an asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of the hadron pairs when they are pro…
We investigate the nucleon and pion gluon distribution functions in the framework of holographic QCD, focusing on the small Bjorken x region. Based on an approximate relation, the gluon distributions are extracted from structure functions of the unpolarized deep inelastic scattering which can be calculated with a holographic QCD model, assuming the Pomeron exchange. All the adjustable parameters of the model are determined with the HERA data of the proton structure functions. We explicitly show that the extracted proton gluon distribution is consistent with results of the recent global QCD ana…
We combine constraints from analyticity with experimental electron-proton scattering data to determine the proton magnetic radius without model-dependent assumptions on the shape of the form factor. We also study the impact of including electron-neutron scattering data, and $ππ\to N\bar{N}$ data. Using representative datasets we find for a cut of $Q^2\leq0.5$ GeV$^2$, $r_M^p=0.91^{+0.03}_{-0.06}\pm0.02$ fm using just proton scattering data; $r_M^p=0.87^{+0.04}_{-0.05}\pm0.01$ fm adding neutron data; and $r_M^p=0.87^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$ fm adding $ππ$ data. We also extract the neutron magnetic radi…
Static properties of hadrons such as their radii and other moments of the electric and magnetic distributions can only be extracted using theoretical methods and not directly measured from experiments. As a result, discrepancies between the extracted values from different precision measurements can exist. The proton charge radius, $r_p$, which is either extracted from electron proton elastic scattering data or from hydrogen atom spectroscopy seems to be no exception. The value $r_p = 0.84087(39)$ fm extracted from muonic hydrogen spectroscopy is about 4% smaller than that obtained from electro…
In light of the proton radius puzzle, the discrepancy between measurements of the proton charge radius from muonic hydrogen and those from electronic hydrogen and electron-proton scattering measurements, we reexamine the charge radius extractions from electron scattering measurements. We provide a recommended value for the proton RMS charge radius, $r_E = 0.879 \pm 0.011$ fm, based on a global examination of elastic e-p scattering data. The uncertainties include contributions to account for tension between different data sets and inconsistencies between radii using different extraction procedu…
Background: Deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) on the deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging represents a unique method for extracting the free neutron structure functions and exploring the nuclear modifications of bound protons and neutrons. The detection of the spectator (with typical momenta $\lesssim$ 100 MeV/c in the deuteron rest frame) controls the nuclear configuration during the DIS process and enables a differential analysis of nuclear effects. At the future electron-ion collider (EIC) such measurements will be performed using far-forward detectors. Purpose: Simulate deuteron DIS with …
Forward-backward multiplicity correlations have been studied in electron-positron, proton-proton and more recently in lead-lead collisions. For the proton-proton case, comparison of experimental results to different models reveals an incomplete understanding of the physical phenomenon associated with these correlations. In this work, we present a study of forward-backward multiplicity correlations in proton-proton collisions using the PYTHIA event generator, at LHC energies. A detailed analysis is presented with and without weak decays, splitting data samples into soft and hard QCD processes, …
We present an analysis of the proton mass radius by studying the $t$-dependence of the differential cross sections of the vector meson photoproductions near the thresholds. At low energy, the photoproduction of a quarkonium off the proton is connected to the scalar gravitational form factor of the proton, which is sensitive to the proton mass distribution from the QCD trace anomaly. Under an assumption of the scalar form factor of dipole form, the proton mass radius is extracted via the near-threshold photoproduction data of J/$ψ$, $ϕ$ and $ω$ vector mesons. The average value of the proton mas…
A phenomenological extraction of pressure within the proton has recently been performed using JLab CLAS data (arXiv:2104.02031 [nucl-ex]). The extraction used a 3-dimensional Breit frame description in which the initial and final proton states have different momenta. Instead, we obtain the two-dimensional transverse light front pressure densities that incorporate relativistic effects arising from the boosts that cause the initial and final states to differ. The mechanical radius is then determined to be $0.518~ \pm 0.062_{\mathrm{fit}} \pm 0.126_{\mathrm{sys}}~\mathrm{fm}$, which is smaller th…
The modification of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the size of the modifications in the quark-gluon plasma differs between theoretical models. Therefore a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. Corroborating past results, I demonstrate the capability of a fully data-driven technique called topic modeling in separating quark and gluon contributions to …
We extract the proton charge radius from the elastic form factor (FF) data using a novel theoretical framework combining chiral effective field theory and dispersion analysis. Complex analyticity in the momentum transfer correlates the behavior of the spacelike FF at finite $Q^2$ with the derivative at $Q^2 = 0$. The FF calculated in the predictive theory contains the radius as a free parameter. We determine its value by comparing the predictions with a descriptive global fit of the spacelike FF data, taking into account the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Our method allows us to u…
The different modifications of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the relative sizes of the modification of quark and gluon jets differ between theoretical models. Therefore, a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We perform a proof-of-concept study based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the \textsc{Pyquen} generator with stati…
Diffractive dissociation processes are analysed in the framework of covariant reggeization. We have considered the general form of hadronic tensor and its asymptotic behaviour for $t\rightarrow 0$ in the case of conserved tensor currents before reggeization. Resulting expressions for differential cross-section of single dissociation (SD) process ($pp \rightarrow p M$), double dissociation (DD) ($pp\rightarrow M_1 M_2$) and for the proton-Pomeron cross-section are given in detail, and corresponding problems of the approach are discussed.

I summarize the dispersion-theoretical analysis of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. Special emphasis is given on the extraction of the proton charge radius and its relatives, the proton magnetic radius as well as the neutron magnetic radius. Some recent work on the hyperfine splitting in leptonic hydrogen and on radiative corrections to muon-proton scattering is also discussed. Some views on future studies are given.
We use a generalization of the Rosenbluth separation method for a model independent simultaneous extraction of the Compton Form Factors ${\cal H}$ and ${\cal E}$, from virtual Compton scattering data on an unpolarized target. A precise evaluation of ${\cal H}$ and ${\cal E}$, enabled by the proposed method, is the first step towards pinning down the the distribution of angular momentum inside the proton.
Extraction of proton form factors in the timelike region from unpolarized e+e- --> p pbar events
Low-energy Compton scattering off the proton is used for determination of the proton polarizabilities. However, the present empirical determinations rely heavily on the theoretical description(s) of the experimental cross sections in terms of polarizabilities. The most recent determinations are based on either the fixed-$t$ dispersion relations (DR) or chiral perturbation theory in the single-baryon sector ($χ$PT). The two approaches obtain rather different results for proton polarizabilities, most notably for $β_{M1}$ (magnetic dipole polarizability). We attempt to resolve this discrepancy by…
At large values of $x$ the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton are poorly constrained and there are considerable variations between different global fits. Data at such high $x$ have already been published by the ZEUS Collaboration, but not yet used in PDF extractions. A technique for comparing predictions based on different PDF sets to the observed number of events in the ZEUS data is presented. It is applied to compare predictions from the most commonly used PDFs to published ZEUS data at high Bjorken $x$. A wide variation is found in the ability of the PDFs to predict the obse…
The trace anomalous energy contribution to the proton mass is a very important topic in non-perturbative QCD and hadron physics. In experiments, it is under the hot discussions on how to measure the trace anomalous energy. The QCD interpretation of proton trace anomaly is still not clear. To connect the theory with the experiment,we extract the trace anomaly by analyzing the near-threshold photo-production data of $ϕ$ and J/$ψ$ vector mesons. Based on the vector-meson-dominance model and QCD Van der Waals representation, we find that the percentage of trace anomaly in the proton mass ranges from…
We present a point-by-point determination of the Sivers distributions from hadron leptoproduction data. The method, which relies on some simple assumptions, is based on the combined analysis of proton and deuteron observables. We make use of the single-spin asymmetries measured by COMPASS in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of 160 GeV muons on transversely polarized proton and deuteron targets.
