The scalar-tensor theory can be formulated in both Jordan and Einstein frames, which are conformally related together with a redefinition of the scalar field. As the solution to the equation of the scalar field in the Jordan frame does not have the one-to-one correspondence with that in the Einstein frame, we give a criterion along with some specific models to check if the scalar field in the Einstein frame is viable or not by confirming whether this field is reversible back to the Jordan frame. We further show that the criterion in the first parameterized post-Newtonian approximation can be determined by the parameters of the osculating approximation of the coupling function in the Einstein frame and can be treated as a viable constraint on any numerical study in the scalar-tensor scenario. We also demonstrate that the Brans-Dicke theory with an infinite constant parameter $ω_{\text{BD}}$ is a counterexample of the equivalence between two conformal frames due to the violation of the viable constraint.
Modified f(R) gravity is one of the most promising candidates for dark energy, and even for the unification of the whole cosmological evolution, including the inflationary phase. Within this class of theories, the so-called viable modified gravities represent realistic theories that are capable of reproducing late-time acceleration, and satisfy strong constraints at local scales, where General Relativity is recovered. The present manuscript deals with the analysis of the cosmological evolution for some of these models, which indicates that the evolution may enter into a phantom phase, but the …
The $f(R)$ theory of gravity can be expressed as a scalar tensor theory with a scalar degree of freedom $ϕ$. By a conformal transformation, the action and its Gibbons-York-Hawking boundary term are written in the Einstein frame and the field equations are found. An effective potential is defined from part of the trace of the field equations in such a way that it can be calculated as an integral of a purely geometric term. This potential as well as the scalar potential are found, plotted and analyzed for some viable models of $f(R)$ and for two other proposed new, shown viable, models.
In this work we construct a bottom-up reconstruction technique for Loop Quantum Cosmology scalar-tensor theories, from the observational indices. Particularly, the reconstruction technique is based on fixing the functional form of the scalar-to-tensor ratio as a function of the $e$-foldings number. The aim of the technique is to realize viable inflationary scenarios, and the only assumption that must hold true in order for the reconstruction technique to work is that the dynamical evolution of the scalar field obeys the slow-roll conditions. We shall use two functional forms for the scalar-to-…
We investigate the parameter distributions of the viable generalized scalar-tensor theory with conventional dust matter after GW170817 in a model-independent way. We numerically construct the models by computing the time evolution of a scalar field, which leads to a positive definite second-order Hamiltonian and are consistent with the observed Hubble parameter. We show the model parameter distributions in the degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theory, and its popular subclasses, e.g., Horndeski and GLPV theories, etc.. We find that 1) the Planck mass run rate, $α_M$, is insensitive…
We discuss mimetic gravity theories with direct couplings between the curvature and higher derivatives of the scalar field, up to the quintic order, which were proposed to solve the instability problem for linear perturbations around the FLRW background for this kind of models. Restricting to homogeneous scalar field configurations in the action, we derive degeneracy conditions to obtain an effective field theory with three degrees of freedom. However, performing the Hamiltonian analysis for a generic scalar field we show that there are in general four or more degrees of freedom. The discrepan…
In this work we shall use a bottom-up approach for obtaining viable inflationary Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet models which are also compatible with the GW170817 event. Specifically, we shall use a recently developed theoretical framework in which we shall specify only the tensor-to-scalar ratio, in terms of the $e$-foldings number. Starting from the tensor-to-scalar ratio, we shall reconstruct from it the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory which can yield such a tensor-to-scalar ratio, finding the scalar potential and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling scalar function as functions of the $e$-foldings number. Accord…
We analyse a rotating regular black hole with asymptotically Minkowski core. This Kerr-like geometry possesses the full "Killing tower" of nontrivial Killing tensor, Killing-Yano tensor, and principal tensor. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation, the Klein-Gordon equation, and Maxwell's equations are separable. Energy-condition-violating physics is pushed into an arbitrarily small region in the deep core. The geometry has a very high level of mathematical tractability; extraction of astrophysical observables falsifiable/verifiable by the observational community is straightforward.
In this paper the focus is on inflationary dynamics in the context of Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravitational theories. We investigate the implications of the slow-roll condition on the slow-roll indices and we investigate how the inflationary dynamical evolution is affected by the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling to the scalar field. For exemplification of our analysis we investigate how the dynamics of inflationary cubic, quartic order and also exponential scalar potentials are affected by the non-trivial Gauss-Bonnet coupling to the scalar field. As we demonstrate it is possible to obtain …
We study gravitational waves in viable $f(R)$ theories under a non-zero background curvature. In general, an $f(R)$ theory contains an extra scalar degree of freedom corresponding to a massive scalar mode of gravitational wave. For viable $f(R)$ models, since there always exits a de-Sitter point where the background curvature in vacuum is non-zero, the mass squared of the scalar mode of gravitational wave is about the de-Sitter point curvature $R_{d}\sim10^{-66}eV^{2}$. We illustrate our results in two types of viable $f(R)$ models: the exponential gravity and Starobinsky models. In both cases…
In spite of their original discrepancy, both dark energy and modified theory of gravity can be parameterized by the effective equation of state (EOS) $ω$ for the expansion history of the Universe. A useful model independent approach to the EOS of them can be given by so-called Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parametrization where two parameters of it ($ω_{0}$ and $ω_{a}$) can be constrained by the geometrical observations which suffer from degeneracies between models. The linear growth of large scale structure is usually used to remove these degeneracies. This growth can be described by the g…
In a recent work, we had constructed a model consisting of two fields---a canonical scalar field and a non-canonical ghost field---that had sourced a symmetric matter bounce scenario. The model had involved only one parameter, viz. the scale associated with the bounce. For a suitable value of the parameter, the model had led to strictly scale invariant power spectra with a COBE normalized scalar amplitude and a rather small tensor-to-scalar ratio. In this work, we extend the model to achieve near-matter bounces, which contain a second parameter apart from the bounce scale. As the new model doe…
Scalar-tensor theories are constrained with lunar laser ranging and supernovae data at low redshift. This allows to find some constraints on the scalar field independently on the form of its potential once the gravitation function is specified. We apply these results to some well known scalar-tensor theories showing that they agreed with the LCDM model at 1 sigma.
In this work we review the issue of imposing the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor as a necessary condition to recover the equivalence between the unimodular gravity and General Relativity (GR) equipped with a cosmological constant. This procedure is usually interpreted as an {\it ad hoc} imposition on the unimodular theory's structure. Whereas the consequences of avoiding the conservation of the total energy-momentum tensor has been already introduced in the literature, it has been not widely explored so far. We study an expanding universe sourced by a single effective perfect fluid …
Scalar-tensor (ST) gravity is considered in the case where the scalar is an external field. We show that General Relativity (GR) and usual ST gravity are particular cases of the External Scalar-Tensor (EST) gravity. It is shown with a particular cosmological example that it is possible to join a part of a GR solution to a part of a ST one such that the complete solution neither belongs to GR nor to ST, but fully satisfies the EST field equations. We argue that external fields may effectively work as a type of screening mechanism for ST theories.
In dark-energy models where a scalar field is nonminimally coupled to the spacetime geometry, gravitational waves are expected to be supplemented with a scalar mode. Such scalar waves may interact with the standard tensor waves, thereby affecting their observed amplitude and polarization. Understanding the role of scalar waves is thus essential in order to design reliable gravitational-wave probes of dark energy and gravity beyond general relativity. In this article, we thoroughly investigate the propagation of scalar and tensor waves in the subset of Horndeski theories in which tensor waves p…
Matter bounces refer to scenarios wherein the universe contracts at early times as in a matter dominated epoch until the scale factor reaches a minimum, after which it starts expanding. While such scenarios are known to lead to scale invariant spectra of primordial perturbations after the bounce, the challenge has been to construct completely symmetric bounces that lead to a tensor-to-scalar ratio which is small enough to be consistent with the recent cosmological data. In this work, we construct a model involving two scalar fields (a canonical field and a non-canonical ghost field) to drive t…
In this work we solved the equation of scalar and tensor perturbations for the generalized Starobinsky inflationary model using the improved uniform approximation method and the phase-integral method up to third-order in deviation. We compare our results with the numerical integration. We have obtained that both semiclassical methods reproduce the scalar power spectra $P_{S,T}$, the scalar spectral index $n_S$, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. Also we present our results in the $(n_S,r)$ plane.
We propose a new reconstruction method for scalar--tensor gravity based on the use of conformal transformations. The new method allows the derivation of a set of interesting exact cosmological solutions in brans Dicke gravity as well as other extensions of General Relativity.
The backreaction of inhomogeneities on the cosmic dynamics is studied in the context of scalar-tensor gravity. Due to terms of indefinite sign in the non-canonical effective energy tensor of the Brans-Dicke-like scalar field, extra contributions to the cosmic acceleration can arise. Brans-Dicke and metric f(R) gravity are presented as specific examples. Certain representation problems of the formalism peculiar to these theories are pointed out.
Following an existing procedure in general relativity, the turnaround radius of a spherical structure is studied in scalar-tensor gravity using a new prescription for the analog of the Hawking-Hayward quasilocal mass in this class of theories.
The scalar tensor theory contains a coupling function connecting the quantities in the Jordan and Einstein frames, which is constrained to guarantee a transformation rule between frames. We simulate the supernovae core collapse with different choices of coupling functions defined over the viable region of the parameter space and find that a generic inverse-chirp feature of the gravitational waves in the scalar tensor scenario.
We present a comprehensive analysis of classical scalar, vector and tensor cosmological perturbations in ghost-free massive bigravity. In particular, we find the full evolution equations and analytical solutions in a wide range of regimes. We show that there are viable cosmological backgrounds but, as has been found in the literature, these models generally have exponential instabilities in linear perturbation theory. However, it is possible to find stable scalar cosmological perturbations for a very particular choice of parameters. For this stable subclass of models we find that vector and te…
We review the recently proposed Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture that stems from the Trans-Planckian problem of cosmological perturbations. We analyze the implications and constraints that TCC introduces in different frameworks of viable inflation. We revisit the case of slow-roll scalar field inflation and we investigate the cases of slow-roll $f(R)$ and $f(R,ϕ)$-gravity. Finally, we consider the conjecture in the context of constant-roll scalar field inflation.
The fundamental difficulty in constructing a viable classical bouncing model is to evade the no-go theorem that states that, simultaneously maintaining the observational bounds on the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the non-Gaussian scalar spectrum is not possible. Furthermore, constructing the bouncing phase leads to numerous instabilities such as gradient, ghost, and so on. Most importantly, the model fails to be an attractor, in general, meaning that the solution heavily depends on the initial conditions, resulting in anisotropic (BKL) instability in the system. In this paper, using conformal tr…
We discuss junction conditions across null hypersurfaces in a class of scalar-tensor gravity theories with i) second order dynamics, ii) obeying the recent constraints imposed by gravitational wave propagation, and iii) allowing for a cosmologically viable evolution. These requirements select kinetic gravity braiding models with linear kinetic term dependence and scalar field-dependent coupling to curvature. We explore a pseudo-orthonormal tetrad and its allowed gauge fixing, with one null vector standing as the normal, the other being transversal to the hypersurface. We derive a generalizatio…
We generate new spherical and time-dependent solutions of viable Horndeski gravity by disforming a solution of the Einstein equations with scalar field source and positive cosmological constant. They describe dynamical objects embedded in asymptotically FLRW spacetimes and contain apparent horizons and a finite radius singularity that evolve in time in peculiar ways apparently not encountered before in Einstein and "old" scalar-tensor gravity.
We study the cosmological evolution of a scalar field that couples to the trace $T=T^{a}_a$ of energy momentum tensor of all the fields (including itself). In the case of a shallow exponential potential, the presence of coupling to the trace $T$ in the field equation makes the energy density of the scalar field decrease faster thereby hastening the commencement of radiation domination. This effect gradually diminishes at later epochs allowing the scalar field to dominate the energy density again. We interpret this phase as the current epoch of cosmic acceleration with $Ω_ϕ=0.7$. A variant of t…
An exact de Sitter solution of scalar-tensor gravity is found, in which the non-minimal coupling scalar is rolling along a non-constant potential. Based on this solution, a dust-filled FRW universe is explored in frame of scalar-tensor gravity. The effective dark energy induced by the sole non-minimal scalar can be quintessence-like, phantom-like, and more significantly, can cross the phantom divide. The rich and varied properties of scalar-tensor gravity even with only one scalar is shown in this article.
We present a direct confirmation of the validity of the equivalence principle for unstructured test bodies in scalar tensor gravity. Our analysis is complementary to previous approaches and valid for a large class of scalar-tensor theories of gravitation. A covariant approach is used to derive the equations of motion in a systematic way and allows for the experimental test of scalar-tensor theories by means of extended test bodies.
We propose a new class of higher derivative scalar-tensor theories without the Ostrogradsky's ghost instabilities. The construction of our theory is originally motivated by a scalar field with spacelike gradient, which enables us to fix a gauge in which the scalar field appears to be non-dynamical. We dub such a gauge as the spatial gauge. Though the scalar field loses its dynamics, the spatial gauge fixing breaks the time diffeomorphism invariance and thus excites a scalar mode in the gravity sector. We generalize this idea and construct a general class of scalar-tensor theories through a non…
The early Cosmology driven by a single scalar field, both massless and massive, in the context of Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity, is explored. We show the existence of nonsingular solutions of bouncing and loitering type (depending on the sign of the gravitational theory's parameter, $ε$) replacing the Big Bang singularity, and discuss their properties. In addition, in the massive case we find some new features of the cosmological evolution depending on the value of the mass parameter, including asymmetries in the expansion/contraction phases, or a continuous transition between a contr…
We study the dynamical description of gravity, the appropriate definition of the scalar field energy-momentum tensor, and the interrelation between them in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We show that the quantity which one would naively identify as the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field is not appropriate because it is spoiled by a part of the dynamical description of gravity. A new connection can be defined in terms of which the full dynamical description of gravity is explicit, and the correct scalar field energy-momentum tensor can be immediately identified. Certain inequalities…
In this paper we undertake the modified theory of gravity f(R,T) where R and T are the Ricci scalar and the trace of the energy momentum tensor, respectively. Imposing the conservation of the energy momentum tensor, we obtain a model about what dynamics and stability are studied. The stability is developed using the de Sitter and power-law solutions. The results show that the model presents stability for both the de Sitter and power-law solutions. Regarding the dynamics, cosmological solutions are obtained by integrating the background equations for both the low-redshift and High-redshift regi…
We compute the phenomenological signatures of a model (Watanabe et al' 09) of anisotropic inflation driven by a scalar and a vector field. The action for the vector is U(1) invariant, and the model is free of ghost instabilities. A suitable coupling of the scalar to the kinetic term of the vector allows for a slow roll evolution of the vector vev, and hence for a prolonged anisotropic expansion; this provides a counter example to the cosmic no hair conjecture. We compute the nonvanishing two point correlation functions between physical modes of the system, and express them in terms of power sp…
Various interpretations of the Riemann Curvature Tensor, Ricci Tensor, and Scalar Curvature are described. Also, the physical meanings of the Einstein Tensor and Einstein's Equations are discussed. Finally a derivation of Newtonian Gravity from Einstein's Equations is given.
We refine and slightly enlarge the recently proposed first-order thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity to include gravitational scalar fields with timelike and past-directed gradients. The implications and subtleties arising in this situation are discussed and an exact cosmological solution of scalar-tensor theory in first-order thermodynamics is revisited in light of these results.
We give a brief summary of the formalism of invariants in general scalar-tensor and multiscalar-tensor gravities without derivative couplings. By rescaling of the metric and reparametrization of the scalar fields, the theory can be presented in different conformal frames and parametrizations. Due to this freedom in transformations, the scalar fields themselves do not carry independent physical meaning (in a generic parametrization). However, there are functions of the scalar fields and their derivatives which remain invariant under the transformations, providing a set of physical variables for…
Stationary, asymptotically flat black holes in scalar-tensor theories of gravity are studied. It is shown that such black holes have no scalar hair and are the same as in General Relativity.
It has been pointed out that matter bounce cosmology driven by a k-essence field cannot satisfy simultaneously the observational bounds on the tensor-to-scalar ratio and non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation. In this paper, we show that this is not the case in more general scalar-tensor theories. To do so, we evaluate the power spectra and the bispectra of scalar and tensor perturbations on a general contracting background in the Horndeski theory. We then discuss how one can discriminate contracting models from inflation based on non-Gaussian signatures of tensor perturbations.
The holographic bound has been extended to the different theory of gravities such as scalar-tensor gravity and $f(R)$ gravity according to the Noether charge definition of the entropy for a black hole surface. We have introduced some popular examples of the flat FRW cosmology in order to investigate holographic bound in scalar-tensor and $f(R)$ gravity. Using the holographic bound, we put an additional constraint on the scalar-tensor gravity and $f(R)$ gravity parameters. We also discuss about the transformation from Jordan frame to Einstein frame.
We reconstruct the potential of minimally coupling inflation model which produces small value of the tensor-scalar ratio. In these inflation models, tensor-scalar ratio is proportional to 1/N^2 scalar spectral index is in good agreement with recent cosmological observations, in which N is the e-folding number and p is a positive number. We also reconstruct f(R) gravity inflation from small tensor-tensor ratio.
The Horndeski action is the most general one involving a metric and a scalar field that leads to second-order field equations in four dimensions. Being the natural extension of the well-known scalar-tensor theories, its structure and properties are worth analyzing along the experience accumulated in the latter context. Here, we argue that disformal transformations play, for the Horndeski theory, a similar role to that of conformal transformations for scalar-tensor theories a la Brans-Dicke.
$ω(ϕ) \to \infty$ limit of scalar tensor theories are studied for traceless matter source. It is shown that the limit $ω(ϕ) \to \infty$ does not reduce a scalar tensor theory to general relativity. An exact radiation solution of scalar tensor cosmology under Nordtvedt conditions is obtained for flat Friedmann universe.
We discuss the dynamics of extended test bodies for a large class of scalar-tensor theories of gravitation. A covariant multipolar Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon type of approach is used to derive the equations of motion in a systematic way for both Jordan and Einstein formulations of these theories. The results obtained provide the framework to experimentally test scalar-tensor theories by means of extended test bodies.
It is proved that all thin-shell wormholes built from two identical regions of vacuum static, spherically symmetric space-times have a negative shell surface energy density in any scalar-tensor theory of gravity with a non-ghost massless scalar field and a non-ghost graviton.
The scalar-tensor representation of nonlocally corrected gravity is considered. Some special solutions of the vacuum background equations were obtained that indicate to the nonequivalence of the initial theory and its scalar-tensor representation.
Inflation in the framework of $f(R)$ modified gravity is revisited. We study the conditions that $f(R)$ should satisfy in order to lead to a viable inflationary model in the original form and in the Einstein frame. Based on these criteria we propose a new logarithmic model as a potential candidate for $f(R)$ theories aiming to describe inflation consistent with observations from \textit{Planck} satellite (2015). The model predicts scalar spectral index $0.9615<n_s<0.9693$ in agreement with observation and tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ of order $10^{-3}$. Furthermore, we show that for a class of m…
We look for necessary conditions such that minimally coupled scalar-tensor theory with a massive scalar field and a perfect fluid in the Bianchi type I model isotropises. Then we derive the dynamical asymptotical properties of the Universe.
Gravitational wave observations will probe non-linear gravitational interactions and thus enable strong tests of Einstein's theory of general relativity. We present a numerical relativity study of the late inspiral and merger of binary black holes in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We consider black hole binaries in an inhomogeneous scalar field, specifically binaries inside a scalar field bubble, in some cases with a potential. We calculate the emission of dipole radiation. We also show how these configurations trigger detectable differences between gravitational waves in scalar-tensor gra…
SNIA and CMB datasets have shown both of evolving Newton's "constant" and a signature of the coupling of scalar field to matter. These observations motivate the consideration of the scalar-matter coupling in Jordan frame in the framework of scalar-tensor gravity. So far, majority of the works on the coupling of scalar matter has performed in Einstein frame in the framework of minimally coupled scalar fields. In this work, we generalize the original scalar-tensor theories of gravity introducing a direct coupling of scalar to matter in the Jordan frame. The combined consideration of both evolvin…
Linearized gravitational waves in Brans-Dicke and scalar-tensor theories carry negative energy. A gauge-invariant analysis shows that the background Minkowski space is stable at the classical level with respect to linear scalar and tensor inhomogeneous perturbations.
Some models within the framework of Gauss-Bonnet gravities are considered in the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar field. By imposing a particular constraint on the scalar field coupling, an extension of the called Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity that keeps the correct speed of propagation for gravitational waves, is considered. The cosmological evolution for this viable class of models is studied and compared with observational data (BAO, CMB, Sne Ia,..), where we obtain the corresponding bounds for these theories and show that such theories fit well the data and provide a well-behaved…
The timing of binary pulsars allows us to place some of the tightest constraints on modified theories of gravity. Perhaps some of the most interesting and well-motivated extensions to General Relativity are scalar-tensor theories, in which gravity is mediated by the metric tensor and a scalar field. These theories predict large deviations from General Relativity in the presence of neutron stars through a phenomenon known as scalarization. Neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories develop scalar charges, which directly enter the timing model for binary pulsars. In this paper, we calculate and tab…
