Differential cross sections for deuteron breakup $^{1}H(d, pp)n$ reaction were measured for a large set of 243 geometrical configurations at the beam energy of 80 MeV/nucleon. The cross section data are normalized by the luminosity factor obtained on the basis of simultaneous measurement of elastic scattering channel and the existing cross section data for this process. The results are compared to the theoretical calculations modeling nuclear interaction with and without taking into account the three-nucleon force (3NF) and Coulomb interaction. In the validated region of the phase space both the Coulomb force and 3NF play an important role in a good description of the data. There are also regions, where the improvements of description due to including 3NF are not sufficient.
The Ayy data for deuteron inclusive breakup off hydrogen and carbon at a deuteron momentum of 9.0 GeV/c and large Pt of emitted protons are presented. The large values of Ayy independent of the target mass reflect the sensitivity of the data to the deuteron spin structure. The data obtained at fixed $x$ and plotted versus Pt clearly demonstrate the dependence of the deuteron spin structure at short internucleonic distances on two variables. The data are compared with the calculations using Paris, CD-Bonn and Karmanov's deuteron wave functions.
New measurements of the neutron-neutron quasifree scattering cross section in neutron-deuteron breakup at an incident neutron energy of 10.0 MeV are reported. The experiment setup was optimized to evaluate the technique for determining the integrated beam-target luminosity in neutron-neutron coincidence cross-section measurements in neutron-deuteron breakup. The measurements were carried out with a systematic uncertainty of $\pm 5.6 \%$. Our data are in agreement with theoretical calculations performed using the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential in the Faddeev formalism. The measured integrate…
We present results for the three-cluster breakup in deuteron-deuteron collisions at 130 and 270 MeV deuteron beam energy. The breakup amplitude is calculated using the first term in the Neumann series expansion of the corresponding exact four-nucleon equations. In analogy with nucleon-deuteron breakup where an equivalent approximation is compared with exact calculations, we expect this single-scattering approximation to provide a rough estimation of three-body breakup observables in quasifree configurations. We predict the nucleon-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron three-cluster breakup cross sect…
High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV deuteron energy are compared with the theoretical predictions obtained with a coupled-channel extension of the CD Bonn potential with virtual Delta-isobar excitation, without and with inclusion of the long-range Coulomb force. The Coulomb effect is studied on the basis of the cross-section data set, extended in this work to about 1500 data points by including breakup geometries characterized by small polar angles of the two protons. The experimental data clearly prefer predictions obtained with the Coulomb int…
Deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering and transfer reactions in the energy regime above four-nucleon breakup threshold are described by solving exact four-particle equations for transition operators. Several realistic nuclear interaction models are used, including the one with effective many-nucleon forces generated by the explicit $Δ$-isobar excitation; the Coulomb force between protons is taken into account as well. Differential cross sections, deuteron analyzing powers, outgoing nucleon polarization, and deuteron-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are calculated at 10 MeV deuteron…
Vector and tensor analysing powers of the d(pol)p->(pp)n (charge-exchange) and d(pol)p->(pn)p (non-charge-exchange) breakup reactions have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY ring at a deuteron beam energy of 1170 MeV for small momentum transfers to the low excitation energy (pp) or (pn) systems. A quantitative understanding of the values of A_xx and A_yy for the charge-exchange reaction is provided by impulse approximation calculations. The data suggest that spin-flip isospin-flip transitions, which dominate the charge-exchange breakup of the deuteron, are also important in t…
An analysis of the $^{231}$Pa$(d,3n)$$^{230}$U reaction excitation function at energies around the Coulomb barrier has taken into account the pre-equilibrium and compound-nucleus cross sections corrected for the deuteron-breakup decrease of the total reaction cross section, as well as the inelastic breakup enhancement. The analysis reveals the dominance of the deuteron breakup mechanism unlike a former assessment in this respect of the deuteron-induced fission process.
An angular dependence of the tensor analyzing power of the breakup of polarized deuterons at 9 GeV/$c$ has been investigated. The measurements have been made on hydrogen and carbon targets at angles in the range from 85 to 160 mr. The data obtained are analyzed within the framework of the light-front dynamics using the deuteron wave functions for Paris and Bonn CD potentials, and the relativistic deuteron wave function by Karmanov et al. The experimental data are in rough agreement with calculations with the use of Karmanov's deuteron wave function.
A set of differential cross section of the three-body $^{2}$H($d$,$dp$)$n$ breakup reaction at 160 MeV deuteron beam energy are presented for 147 kinematically complete configurations near the quasi-free scattering kinematics. The experiment was performed at KVI in Groningen, the Netherlands using the BINA detector. The cross-section data have been normalized to the $^{2}$H($d$,$d$)$^{2}$H elastic scattering cross section. The data are compared to the recent single-scattering approximation (SSA) calculations for three-cluster breakup in deuteron-deuteron collisions. Confronting the SSA predict…
A study of the deuteron breakup reaction $pd \to (pp)n$ with forward emission of a fast proton pair with small excitation energy $E_{pp}<$ 3 MeV has been performed at the ANKE spectrometer at COSY--Jülich. An exclusive measurement was carried out at six proton--beam energies $T_p=$~0.6,~0.7,~0.8,~0.95,~1.35, and 1.9 GeV by reconstructing the momenta of the two protons. The differential cross section of the breakup reaction, averaged up to $8^{\circ}$ over the cm polar angle of the total momentum of the $pp$ pairs, has been obtained. Since the kinematics of this process is quite similar to that…
We report the most precise determination of the $^{1}S_{0}$ neutron-neutron effective range parameter ($r_{nn}$) from neutron-neutron quasifree scattering in neutron-deuteron breakup. The experiment setup utilized a collimated beam of 15.5 MeV neutrons and an array of eight neutron detectors positioned at angles sensitive to several quasifree scattering kinematic configurations. The two neutrons emitted from the breakup reaction were detected in coincidence and time-of-flight techniques were used to determine their energies. The beam-target luminosity was measured in-situ with the yields from …
We analyze the momentum distributions of constituents in 3He, as well as the spin-dependent observables for (3He,d), (3He,p), and (d,p) breakup reactions. Special attention is paid to the region of small relative momenta of the helium-3 and the deuteron constituents, where a single parameter, D_2, has determining role for the spin-dependent observables. We extract also this parameter for the deuteron, basing on existing data for the tensor analyzing power of this reaction.
The available data on the forward charge exchange of nucleons on the deuteron up to 2GeV per nucleon are reviewed. The value of the inclusive nd->pnn/np->pn cross section ratio is sensitive to the fraction of spin-independent neutron-proton backward scattering. The measurements of the polarisation transfer in d(\vec{n},\vec{p})nn or the deuteron analysing power in p(\vec{d},pp)n in high resolution experiments, where the final nn or pp pair emerge at low excitation energy, depend upon the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin np amplitudes. The relation between these types of experiments is dis…
High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV are presented for 72 kinematically complete configurations. The data cover a large region of the available phase space, divided into a systematic grid of kinematical variables. They are compared with theoretical predictions, in which the full dynamics of the three-nucleon (3N) system is obtained in three different ways: realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials are combined with model 3N forces (3NF's) or with an effective 3NF resulting from explicit treatment of the Delta-isobar excitation. Alternatively, the…
We study high energy photodisintegration of the deuteron into two $Δ$-isobars at large center of mass angles within the QCD hard rescattering model (HRM). According to the HRM, the process develops in three main steps: the photon knocks the quark from one of the nucleons in the deuteron; the struck quark rescatters off a quark from the other nucleon sharing the high energy of the photon; then the energetic quarks recombine into two outgoing baryons which have large transverse momenta. Within the HRM, the cross section is expressed through the amplitude of $pn\rightarrow ΔΔ$ scattering which we…
We discuss how to reduce theoretical uncertainties in the neutrino-deuteron breakup cross-sections crucial to the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory's efforts to measure the solar neutrino flux. In effective field theory, the dominant uncertainties in all neutrino-deuteron reactions can be expressed through a single, common, isovector axial two-body current parameterized by $L_{1,A}$. After briefly reviewing the status of fixing $L_{1,A}$ experimentally, we present a constraint on $L_{1,A}$ imposed by existing reactor antineutrino-deuteron breakup data. This constraint alone leads to an uncertainty …
We successfully identified a few final states in deuteron-deuteron scattering at 65 MeV/nucleon at KVI using a unique and advanced detection system called BINA. This facility enabled us to perform cross sections and polarization measurements with an excellent statistical and systematical precision. The analysis procedure and part of the results of the three-body break-up channel in deuteron-deuteron scattering at 65 MeV/nucleon are presented in this paper.
The reaction $^{11}B+p$ has been used to populate the $(J^π,T)=(2^+,1)$ state at an excitation energy of 16.11 MeV in $^{12}$C, and the breakup of the state into three $α$ particles has been studied in complete kinematics. A two-step breakup model which includes interference effects is found to provide the most accurate description of the experimental data. The branching ratio to the ground state of $^8$Be is determined to be 5.1(5)% in agreement with previous findings, but more precise by a factor of two, while the decay to the first-excited state in $^8$Be is found to be dominated by $d$-wav…
Activation cross-sections of deuterons induced reactions on Nb targets were determined with the aim of different applications and comparison with theoretical models.
Breakup temperatures were deduced from double ratios of isotope yields for target spectators produced in the reaction Au + Au at 1000 MeV per nucleon. Pairs of $^{3,4}$He and $^{6,7}$Li isotopes and pairs of $^{3,4}$He and H isotopes (p, d and d, t) yield consistent temperatures after feeding corrections, based on the quantum statistical model, are applied. The temperatures rise with decreasing impact parameter from 4 MeV for peripheral to about 10 MeV for the most central collisions. The good agreement with the breakup temperatures measured previously for projectile spectators at an incident …
The Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels (CDCC) method is a well established theory for direct nuclear reactions which includes breakup to all orders. Alternatively, the 3-body problem can be solved exactly within the Faddeev formalism which explicitly includes breakup and transfer channels to all orders. With the aim to understand how CDCC compares with the exact 3-body Faddeev formulation, we study deuteron induced reactions on: i) $^{10}$Be at $E_{\rm d}= 21.4, 40.9 \; {\rm and} \; 71$ MeV; ii) $^{12}$C at $E_{\rm d} = 12 \; {\rm and} \; 56$ MeV; and iii) $^{48}$Ca at $E_{\rm d} = 56$ MeV…
In an experiment with a 65 MeV/nucleon polarized deuteron beam on a liquid-deuterium target at KVI, several multi-body final states in deuteron-deuteron scattering were identified. For these measurements, a unique and advanced detection system, called BINA, was utilized. We demonstrate the feasibility of measuring vector and tensor polarization observables of the deuteron break-up reaction leading to a three-body final-state. The polarization observables were determined with high precision in a nearly background-free experiment. The analysis procedure and some results are presented.
Proton-proton correlations and correlations of protons, deuterons and tritons with alpha particles from spectator decays following 197Au + 197Au collisions at 1000 MeV per nucleon have been measured with two highly efficient detector hodoscopes. The constructed correlation functions, interpreted within the approximation of a simultaneous volume decay, indicate a moderate expansion and low breakup densities, similar to assumptions made in statistical multifragmentation models. We present a new analysis of J/psi production yields in deuteron-gold collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV using data taken by the PHENIX experiment in 2003 and previously published in [S.S. Adler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 012304 (2006)]. The high statistics proton-proton J/psi data taken in 2005 is used to improve the baseline measurement and thus construct updated cold nuclear matter modification factors R_dAu. A suppression of J/psi in cold nuclear matter is observed as one goes forward in rapidity (in the deuteron-going direction), corresponding to a region more sensitive to initial state …
Angular distributions of fluorine and oxygen produced from 170 MeV 17^F incident on 208^Pb were measured. The elastic scattering data are in good agreement with optical model calculations using a double-folding potential and parameters similar to those obtained from 16^O+208^Pb. A large yield of oxygen was observed near θ_lab=36 deg. It is reproduced fairly well by a calculation of the (17^F,16^O) breakup, which is dominated by one-proton stripping reactions. The discrepancy between our previous coincidence measurement and theoretical predictions was resolved by including core absorption in th…
The consequences for direct reactions of the dynamical non-locality generated by the excitation of the target and projectile are much less studied than the effects of non-locality arising from exchange processes. Here we are concerned with the dynamical non-locality due to projectile excitation in deuteron induced reactions. The consequences of this non-locality can be studied by the comparison of deuteron induced direct reactions calculated with alternative representations of the elastic channel wave functions: (i) the elastic channel wave functions from coupled channel (CC) calculations invo…
Activation cross sections of deuteron induced reactions on ytterbium for production of $^{177g,173,172,171,170,169,167}$Lu, $^{177,175,169}$Yb and $^{173,168,167,165}$Tm were extended up to 50 MeV deuteron energy. The new data are in acceptable agreement with the earlier experimental data in the overlapping energy region. The experimental data are compared with the predictions of the ALICE-D, EMPIRE-D and TALYS 1.4 (TENDL-2013 on-line library results) codes.
The effect of core excitations in transfer reactions of the form A(d, p)B has been found to affect significantly the calculated cross sections and to depend strongly and non-linearly on the incident deuteron energy in Faddeev/AGS calculations. Our goal is to investigate these effects within a coupled-channels formulation of the scattering problem which, in addition of being computationally less demanding than the Faddeev counterpart, may help shed some light into the physical interpretation of the cited effects. We use an extended version of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) me…
Measurement of angular distributions and energy spectra of $α$ and deuterons through breakup, transfer and incomplete fusion processes to dis-entangle their relative contributions and to investigate relative importance of breakup-fusion compared to transfer. Inclusive $α$ production cross-sections have been measured for $^6$Li + $^{51}$V system near Coulomb barrier energies. Theoretical calculations for estimation of various reaction channels contributing to $α$ production have been performed with finite range coupled reaction method using \textsc{FRESCO} code. The cross-sections from non-capt…
We present measurements of differential cross sections and analyzing powers for the elastic 2H(~d; d)d scattering process. The data were obtained using a 130 MeV polarized deuteron beam. Cross sections and spin observables of the elastic scattering process were measured at the AGOR facility at KVI using two independent setups, namely BINA and BBS. The data harvest at setups are in excellent agreement with each other and allowed us to carry out a thorough systematic analysis to provide the most accurate data in elastic deuteron-deuteron scattering at intermediate energies. The results can be us…
The experiment was carried out using BINA detector at KVI in Groningen. For the first time an extensive data analysis of the data collected in back part of the detector is presented, where a clusterization method is utilized for angular and energy information. We also present differential cross-sections for the (dd$\rightarrow$dpn) breakup reaction within \textit{dp} quasi-free scattering limit and their comparison with first calculations based on Single Scattering Approximation (SSA) approach.
A deuteron beam polarimeter has been constructed at the Internal Target Station at the Nuclotron of JINR. The polarimeter is based on spin-asymmetry measurements in the d-p elastic scattering at large angles and the deuteron kinetic energy of 270 MeV. It allows to measure vector and tensor components of the deuteron beam polarization simultaneously.
A new calculation of R_{dAu} has been performed using the 2003 d+Au data and the higher-statistics 2005 p+p data. These nuclear modification factors are compared to calculations using nuclear-modified PDFs and a J/psi breakup cross section is extracted. These values are then used to project the cold nuclear matter effects in Au+Au collisions. Additionally, a more data-driven projection is performed.
Activation cross sections of the natEr(d,x)163,165,166,167,168,170Tm and natEr(d,x)171,161Er nuclear reactions have been measured in the 32-50 MeV energy range, above 40 MeV for the first time. The activation method with stacked foil irradiation technique and gamma-ray spectroscopy were used. The experimental cross sections were compared with the theoretical predictions in the TENDL-2015 library.
The deuteron single and double spin-flip probabilities, S1 and S2, have been measured for the 12C(pol{d},pol{d}') reaction at Ed = 270 MeV for an excitation energy range between 4 and 24 MeV and a scattering angular range between Theta_lab = 2.5 and 7.5 deg. The extracted S1 exhibits characteristic values depending on the structure of the excited state. The S2 is close to zero over the measured excitation energy range. The SFP angular distribution data for the 2+ (4.44 MeV) and 1+ (12.71 MeV) states are well described by the microscopic DWIA calculations.
Excitation functions were measured for the natSr(d,x)88,87m,87g,86g,85gY, 87m,85g,83g,82Sr, 86g,84g,83,82m, 81gRb reactions by the stacked foil activation technique and high-resolution gamma-spectrometry up to 50 MeV. We present the first experimental activation cross section data for all investigated reactions. Our experimental data are compared with the TALYS code results as available in the TENDL-2015 on-line library. Use of deuteron induced reactions on Sr for production of medical isotopes is discussed.
We report new measurements of the neutron-deuteron elastic scattering cross section at energies from 135 to 250 MeV and center-of-mass angles from $80^\circ$ to $130^\circ$. Cross sections for neutron-proton elastic scattering were also measured with the same experimental setup for normalization purposes. Our $nd$ cross section results are compared with predictions based on Faddeev calculations including three-nucleon forces, and with cross sections measured with charged particle and neutron beams at comparable energies.
Nucleon transfer reactions in deuteron-deuteron collisions at energies above the three- and four-body breakup threshold are described using exact four-body equations for transition operators that are solved in the momentum-space framework. Differential cross sections, analyzing powers, polarizations, and spin transfer coefficients are obtained using realistic two-nucleon potentials and including the Coulomb repulsion between protons. Overall good agreement between predictions and experimental data is found. Most remarkable discrepancies are seen around the minima of the differential cross sect…
Experimental cross-sections are presented for the first time for the 159Tb(d,xn)155,157,159Dy, 155,156,160Tb and 153Gd nuclear reactions up to 50 MeV. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions of the ALICE, EMPIRE and TALYS nuclear reaction codes. Integral thick-target yields are also derived for the reaction products that have practical applications.
Angular distributions of oxygen produced in the breakup of $^{17}$F incident on a $^{208}$Pb target have been measured around the grazing angle at beam energies of 98 and 120 MeV. The data are dominated by the proton stripping mechanism and are well reproduced by dynamical calculations. The measured breakup cross section is approximately a factor of 3 less than that of fusion at 98 MeV. The influence of breakup on fusion is discussed.
Fully converged calculations of deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering observables are performed at energies above three- and four-body breakup threshold. Differential cross sections and analyzing powers are obtained using realistic nucleon-nucleon force models together with the Coulomb repulsion between protons. For all observables we find a very reasonable agreement with the available experimental data limited to deuteron beam energies up to 25.3 MeV.
Activation cross-sections for deuteron induced reactions on Sm are presented for the first time for $^{nat}$Sm(d,xn)$^{155,154,152m2,152m1,152g,150m,150g,149,148,147,146}$Eu, $^{nat}$Sm(d,x)$^{153,145}$Sm and $^{nat}$Sm(d,x)$^{151,150,149,145,144,143}$Pm up to 50 MeV. The cross-sections were measured by the stacked-foil irradiation technique and high resolution $γ$-ray spectrometry. The results were compared with results of nuclear reaction codes ALICE-D, EMPIRE-D and TALYS (from TENDL libraries). Integral yields of the products were calculated from the excitation functions.
Detailed measurements of five-fold differential cross sections and a rich set of vector and tensor analyzing powers of the 2H(d; dp)n break-up process using polarized deuteron-beam energy of 65 MeV/nucleon with a liquid-deuterium target are presented. The experiment was conducted at the AGOR facility at KVI using the BINA 4Pi-detection system. We discuss the analysis procedure including a thorough study of the systematic uncertainties. The results can be used to examine upcoming state-of-the-art calculations in the four-nucleon scattering domain, and will, thereby, provide further insights int…
Breakup reactions of the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on Pb and C targets at about 70 MeV/u have been investigated by measuring the momentum vectors of the incident 11Be, outgoing 10Be, and neutron in coincidence. The relative energy spectra as well as the angular distributions of the 10Be+n center of mass have been extracted for both targets. For the breakup on Pb target, the selection of forward scattering angles is found to be effective to extract almost purely the first-order E1 Coulomb breakup component, and to exclude the nuclear contribution and higher-order Coulomb breakup components.…
We present an account of the current status of the theoretical treatment of inclusive $(d,p)$ reactions in the breakup-fusion formalism, pointing to some applications and making the connection with current experimental capabilities. Three independent implementations of the reaction formalism have been recently developed, making use of different numerical strategies. The codes also originally relied on two different but equivalent representations, namely the prior (Udagawa-Tamura, UT) and the post (Ichimura-Austern-Vincent, IAV) representations. The different implementations have been benchmark…
Investigations of cross-sections of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on gold were extended up to 50 MeV by using the standard stacked foil irradiation technique and high resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. New cross-sections are reported for the $^{197}$Au(d,xn)$^{197m,197g,195m,195g,193m,193g}$Hg and $^{197}$Au(d,x)$^{198m,198g,196m,196g,195,194}$Au nuclear reactions. The application for production of the medically relevant isotopes $^{198}$Au and $^{195m,195g,197m,197g}$Hg is discussed, including the comparison with other charged particle induced production routes. The possible use of the $…

A stacked-foil irradiation technique and off-line gamma-ray spectrometry were used to determine the activities. No earlier cross-section data were found in the literature. The experimental data are compared with the predictions of the ALICE-D, EMPIRE-D and TALYS codes. Integral production yields were …
Model dependence of the reaction rates for the weak breakup of deuterons by low energy neutrinos is studied starting from the cross sections derived from potential models and also from pionless effective field theory. Choosing the spread of the reaction yields, caused basically by the different ways the two-body currents are treated, as a measure of the model dependent uncertainty, we conclude that the breakup reactions are $\sim$ 2 - 3 % uncertain, and that even the ratio of the charged to neutral current reaction rates is also $\sim$ 2 % uncertain.
The energy range of our earlier measured activation cross-sections data of longer-lived products of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on indium were extended from 40 MeV up to 50 MeV. The traditional stacked foil irradiation technique and non-destructive gamma spectrometry were used. No experimental data were found in literature for this higher energy range. Experimental cross-sections for the formation of the radionuclides $^{113,110}$Sn, $^{116m,115m,114m,113m,111,110g,109}$In and $^{115}$Cd are reported in the 37-50 MeV energy range, for production of $^{110}$Sn and $^{110g,109}$In these a…
In the frame of a systematical study of light ion induced nuclear reactions on platinum, activation cross sections for deuteron induced reactions were investigated. The experimental results are compared with our previous results and with the theoretical predictions calculated with the ALICE-D, EMPIRE-D and TALYS (TENDL libraries) codes.
The observation of a large cross-section for the alpha + d channel compared to breakup into the alpha + t channel from an exclusive measurement for the 7Li+65Cu system at 25 MeV is presented. A detailed analysis of the angular distribution using coupled channels Born approximation calculations has provided clear evidence that the observed alpha + d events arise from a two step process, i.e. direct transfer to the 2.186 MeV (3+) resonance in the alpha + d continuum of 6Li followed by breakup, and are not due to final state interaction effects.
Excitation functions were measured for the $^{nat}$Ag(d,x)$^{105,104}$Cd, $^{110m,108m,106m,105g,104g}$Ag and $^{101}$Pd, $^{105,101m}$Rh reactions over the energy range 33 50 MeV by using the stacked foil activation technique and subsequent high-resolution gamma spectrometry. We present the first experimental cross section data above 40 MeV for all of these reactions and the first experimental cross section data for $^{nat}$Ag(d,x)$^{108m,104g}$Ag and $^{105,103}$Rh. The experimental data are compared with results of the model calculations performed with the ALICE D, EMPIRE D theoretical nucl…

The measured values were compared with the results of theoretical models calculated by the computer codes ALICE-D, EMPIRE-D and TALYS (data from TENDL library). Integral yields of the reaction products were deduced from the excitation functi…

Unfolding step by step the accessibility to the above configurations, it will require similar studies at lower and higher energies as well as the interpretation of the data in a theoretical framework. Purpose: Investigate the breakup decay rate of $^9$Be+p at 2.72A MeV, where the $α$+$α$+n configuration is mainly accessible. Compare and interpret data at 2.72A MeV and 5.67A…
