Nucleon transfer reactions in deuteron-deuteron collisions at energies above the three- and four-body breakup threshold are described using exact four-body equations for transition operators that are solved in the momentum-space framework. Differential cross sections, analyzing powers, polarizations, and spin transfer coefficients are obtained using realistic two-nucleon potentials and including the Coulomb repulsion between protons. Overall good agreement between predictions and experimental data is found. Most remarkable discrepancies are seen around the minima of the differential cross section at higher energies and in the outgoing nucleon polarization at lower energies.
A self-contained Fortran-90 program based on a classical trajectory model with stochastic breakup is presented, which should be a powerful tool for quantifying complete and incomplete fusion, and breakup in reactions induced by weakly-bound two-body projectiles near the Coulomb barrier. The code calculates complete and incomplete fusion cross sections and their angular momentum distribution, as well as breakup observables (angle, kinetic energy and relative energy distributions).
We present a theory of one-neutron halo breakup reactions within the framework of post-form distorted wave Born approximation wherein pure Coulomb, pure nuclear and their interference terms are treated consistently in a single setup. This formalism is used to study the breakup of one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on several targets of different masses. We investigate the role played by the pure Coulomb, pure nuclear and the Coulomb-nuclear interference terms by calculating several reaction observables. The Coulomb-nuclear interference terms are found to be important for more exclusive observables.
Within the pure Coulomb breakup mechanism, we investigate the one-neutron removal reaction of the type A(a,b$γ$)X with $^{11}$Be and $^{19}$C projectiles on a heavy target nucleus $^{208}$Pb at the beam energy of 60 MeV/nucleon. Our intention is to examine the prospective of using these reactions to study the structure of neutron rich nuclei. Integrated partial cross sections and momentum distributions for the ground as well as excited bound states of core nuclei are calculated within the finite range distorted wave Born approximation as well as within the adiabatic model of the Coulomb breaku…
We review some simple mechanisms of breakup in nuclear reactions. We mention the spectator breakup, which is described in the post-form DWBA. The relation to other formulations is also indicated. An especially important mechanism is Coulomb dissociation. It is a distinct advantage that the perturbation due to the electric field of the nucleus is exactly known. Therefore firm conclusions can be drawn from such measurements. Some new applications of Coulomb dissociation for nuclear astrophysics are discussed.
The astrophysical factor of the 8B(p,gamma)9C at zero energy, S18(0), is determined from three-body model analysis of 9C breakup processes. The elastic breakup 208Pb(9C,p8B)208Pb at 65 MeV/nucleon and the one-proton removal reaction of 9C at 285 MeV/nucleon on C and Al targets are calculated with the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) and the eikonal reaction theory (ERT), respectively. The asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of 9C in the p-8B configuration extracted from the two reactions show good consistency, in contrast to in the previous studies. As a result of th…
In this work, we reexamine the extension of the CDCC formalism to include target excitation and apply it to a variety of reactions to study the effect of breakup on inelastic cross sections. We use a transformed oscillator basis to discretize the continuum of the projectiles in the different reactions and use the extended CDCC method developed in this work to solve the resulting coupled differential equations. A new code has been developed to perform the calculations. Reactions 58Ni(d, d) 58Ni*, 24Mg(d, d) 24Mg* , 144Sm( 6Li, 6Li) 144Sm* and 9Be( 6Li, 6Li) 9Be* are studied. Satisfactory agreem…
New experimental results for the elastic scattering of 6He on 64Zn at incident energies of 15.0 and 18.0 MeV and 4He at 17.5 MeV along with results already published at 10.0 and 13.6 MeV, are presented. Elastic and alpha experimental cross sections are compared with coupled-reaction-channel, continuum-discretized coupledchannel, and DWBA inclusive-breakup models. The large yield of alpha particles observed at all measured energies can be explained by considering a nonelastic breakup mechanism.
We use a three-body Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) model to investigate Coulomb and nuclear effects in breakup and reaction cross sections. The breakup of the projectile is simulated by a finite number of square integrable wave functions. First we show that the scattering matrices can be split in a nuclear term, and in a Coulomb term. This decomposition is based on the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, and requires the scattering wave functions. We present two different methods to separate both effects. Then, we apply this separation to breakup and reaction cross sections of 7Li + 208…
The formal theory of breakup reactions is reviewed. The direct breakup mechanism which is formulated within the framework of the post form distorted wave Born approximation is discussed in detail. In this theory, which requires the information about only the ground state wave function of the projectile, the fragment-target interactions are included to all orders while fragment-fragment interaction is treated only in the first order. The general applicability of this theory to describe the breakup of halo nuclei is demonstrated by comparing the calculations with data for total, as well as energ…
Previous studies of $(d,p)$ reactions in three-body (proton, neutron, nuclear core) systems revealed a nontrivial effect of the core excitation: the transfer cross section cannot be factorized into the spectroscopic factor and the single-particle cross section obtained neglecting the core excitation. This observable, up to a kinematic factor, is the angular distribution of the core nucleus in the $(p,d)$ reaction. The study of the core excitation effect for the most closely related observable in the $(p,pn)$ three-body breakup, i.e., the core angular distribution, is aimed in the present work.…
The angular distributions for elastic scattering and breakup of halo nuclei are analysed using a near-side/far-side decomposition within the framework of the dynamical eikonal approximation. This analysis is performed for 11Be impinging on Pb at 69AMeV. These distributions exhibit very similar features. In particular they are both near-side dominated, as expected from Coulomb-dominated reactions. The general shape of these distributions is sensitive mostly to the projectile-target interactions, but is also affected by the extension of the halo. This suggests that the link between elastic scatt…
Within a theory of breakup reactions formulated in the framework of the post form distorted wave Born approximation, we calculate contributions of the pure Coulomb and the pure nuclear breakup as well as those of their interference terms to a variety of cross sections in breakup reactions of the one-neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Be on a number of target nuclei. In contrast to the assumption often made, the Coulomb-nuclear interference terms are found to be non-negligible in case of exclusive cross sections of the fragments emitted in this reaction on medium mass and heavy target nuclei. The cons…
Complete fusion excitation functions of reactions involving breakup are studied by using the empirical coupled-channel (ECC) model with breakup effects considered. An exponential function with two parameters is adopted to describe the prompt-breakup probability in the ECC model. These two parameters are fixed by fitting the measured prompt-breakup probability or the complete fusion cross sections. The suppression of complete fusion at energies above the Coulomb barrier is studied by comparing the data with the predictions from the ECC model without the breakup channel considered. The results s…
We propose alternatives to coupled-channels calculations with loosely-bound exotic nuclei (CDCC), based on the the random matrix (RMT) and the optical background (OPM) models for the statistical theory of nuclear reactions. The coupled channels equations are divided into two sets. The first set, described by the CDCC, and the other set treated with RMT. The resulting theory is a Statistical CDCC (CDCC$_S$), able in principle to take into account many pseudo channels.
Breakup reactions of loosely-bound nuclei are often used to extract structure and/or astrophysical information. Here we compare three non-perturbative reaction theories often used when analyzing breakup experiments, namely the continuum discretized coupled channel model, the time-dependent approach relying on a semiclassical approximation, and the dynamical eikonal approximation. Our test case consists of the breakup of 15C on Pb at 68 MeV/nucleon and 20 MeV/nucleon.
An analysis of the $^{231}$Pa$(d,3n)$$^{230}$U reaction excitation function at energies around the Coulomb barrier has taken into account the pre-equilibrium and compound-nucleus cross sections corrected for the deuteron-breakup decrease of the total reaction cross section, as well as the inelastic breakup enhancement. The analysis reveals the dominance of the deuteron breakup mechanism unlike a former assessment in this respect of the deuteron-induced fission process.
We present a novel method of smoothing discrete breakup cross sections calculated by the method of continuum-discretized coupled-channels. The method based on the complex scaling method is tested with success for $^{58}$Ni($d$, $pn$) reaction at 80 MeV as an example of a three-body breakup reaction, and applied to $^{12}$C($^6$He, $nn^4$He) reaction at 229.8 MeV as a typical example of a four-body breakup reaction. The new method does not need to derive continuum states of the projectile in order to evaluate the breakup cross section as a smooth factor of the excitation energy of the projectil…
The astrophysical factor of $^8$B($p$,$γ$)$^9$C at zero energy, $S_{18}(0)$, is determined by a three-body coupled-channels analysis of the transfer reaction $^{8}$B($d$,$n$)$^{9}$C at 14.4 MeV/nucleon. Effects of the breakup channels of $d$ and $^9$C are investigated with the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method. It is found that, in the initial and final channels, respectively, the transfer process through the breakup states of $d$ and $^9$C, its interference with that through their ground states in particular, gives a large increase in the transfer cross section. The finite-range e…
Complete fusion cross sections in collisions of light, weakly bound nuclei and high Z targets show above-barrier suppression of complete fusion. This has been interpreted as resulting from breakup of the weakly bound nucleus prior to reaching the fusion barrier, reducing the probability of complete fusion. This paper investigates how these conclusions are affected by lifetimes of the resonant states that are populated prior to breakup. If the mean life of a populated resonance is much longer than the fusion timescale, then its breakup cannot suppress complete fusion. For short-lived resonances…
We present a method for smoothing discrete breakup $S$-matrix elements calculated by the method of continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC). This smoothing method makes it possible to apply CDCC to four-body breakup reactions. The reliability of the smoothing method is confirmed for two cases, $^{58}$Ni($d$, $p n$) at 80 MeV and the $E1$ transition of $^6$He. We apply CDCC with the smoothing method to $^6$He breakup reaction at 22.5 MeV. Multi-step breakup processes are found to be important.
We analyze the recently obtained new data on the partial cross sections and parallel momentum distributions for transitions to ground as well as excited states of the 16C core, in the one-neutron removal reaction 197Au(17C,16C gamma)X at the beam energy of 61 MeV/nucleon. The Coulomb and nuclear breakup components of the one-neutron removal cross sections have been calculated within a finite range distorted wave Born approximation theory and an eikonal model, respectively. The nuclear contributions dominate the partial cross sections for the core excited states. By adding the nuclear and Coulo…
We extend our previous calculation of the breakup of 11Be using Halo Effective Field Theory and the Dynamical Eikonal Approximation to include an effective 10Be-n-target force. The force is constructed to account for the virtual excitation of 10Be to its low-lying 2+ excited state. In the case of breakup on a 12C target this improves the description of the neutron-energy and angular spectra, especially in the vicinity of the 11Be 5/2+ state. By fine-tuning the range parameters of the three-body force, a reasonable description of data in the region of the 3/2+ 11Be state can also be obtained. T…
We study the postacceleration of charged fragments in reactions with unstable nuclear beams. For elastic breakup processes we show that the postaceleration effect can be well understood in terms of closed analytical forms derived in a quantum mechanical formulation. This gives theoretical support to the effect experimentally observed in the breakup of Li-11 projectiles at intermediate energies.
The $^9$C nucleus and related capture reaction, ${^8\mathrm{B}}(p,γ){^9\mathrm{C}}$, have been intensively studied with an astrophysical interest. Due to the weakly-bound nature of $^9$C, its structure is likely to be described as the three-body (${^7\mathrm{Be}}+p+p$). Its continuum structure is also important to describe reaction processes of $^9$C, with which the reaction rate of the ${^8\mathrm{B}}(p,γ){^9\mathrm{C}}$ process have been extracted indirectly. We perform three-body calculations on $^9$C and discuss properties of its ground and low-lying states via breakup reactions. We employ…
With the recent availability of state-of-the-art radioactive ion beams, there has been a renew interest in the investigation of nuclear reactions with heavy ions near the Coulomb barrier. The role of inelastic and transfer channel couplings in fusion reactions induced by stable heavy ions can be revisited. Detailed Analysis of recent experimental fusion cross sections by using standard coupled-channel calculations is first discussed. Multi-neutron transfer effects are introduced in the fusion process below the Coulomb barrier by analyzing 32S+90,96Zr as benchmark reactions. The enhancement of …
Comparing the capture cross sections calculated without the breakup effect and experimental complete fusion cross sections, the breakup was analyzed in reactions with weakly bound projectiles $^{6,7,9}$Li, $^{9,11}$Be, and $^{6,8}$He. A trend of a systematic behavior for the complete fusion suppression as a function of the target charge and bombarding energy is not achieved. The quasielastic backscattering is suggested to be an useful tool to study the behavior of the breakup probability in reactions with weakly bound projectiles.
The heaviest particle-bound carbon isotope, $^{22}$C, is thought to have a Borromean three-body structure. We discuss and compare four-body, i.e. three-body projectile plus target, reaction model calculations of reaction cross sections for such systems that use the fast adiabatic approximation. These methods are efficient and well-suited for quantitative analyses of reactions of neutron-rich nuclei with light target nuclei at secondary beam energies of $\approx$300 MeV/nucleon, as are now becoming available. We compare the predictions of the adiabatic model of the reaction both without and whe…
We develop a three body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method to dicsuss the effect of the breakup process on heavy-ion fusion reactions induced by weakly bound nuclei. This method follows the classical trajectories of breakup fragments after the breakup takes place, and thus provides an unambiguous separation between complete and incomplete fusion cross sections. Applying this method to the fusion reaction $^{6}$Li + $^{209}$Bi, we find that there is a significant contribution to the total complete fusion cross sections from the process where all the breakup fragments are captured by…
In the paper the so-called modified Yamaguchi function for the Bethe-Salpeter equation with a separable kernel is discussed. The type of the functions is defined by the analytic stucture of the hadron current with breakup - the reactions with interacting nucleon-nucleon pair in the final state (electro-, photo-, and nucleon-disintegration of the deuteron).
The formation of continuum neutron distribution in $^7$Li(p,n) has been identified as due to the coupling of the $^7$Be breakup levels to the final state of the reaction. The continuum neutron spectra produced by $^7$Li(p,n) reaction has been estimated by measuring the double differential cross sections for continuum and resonant breakup of $^7$Be, through $^7$Li(p,n)$^7$Be$^*$ reaction at 21 MeV of proton energy. The breakup contributions from continuum and $5/2^-$, $7/2^-$ states of $^7$Be have been identified. The measured double differential cross sections have been reproduced through CDCC…
Breakup reactions are one of the favored probes to study loosely bound nuclei, particularly those in the limit of stability forming a halo. In order to interpret such breakup experiments, the continuum discretized coupled channel method is typically used. In this study, the first Bayesian analysis of a breakup reaction model is performed. We use a combination of statistical methods together with a three-body reaction model (the continuum discretized coupled channel method) to quantify the uncertainties on the breakup observables due to the parameters in the effective potential describing the l…
Application of the absorbing boundary condition is discussed to analyse breakup reactions of weakly bound nuclei. The key ingredient is an introduction of the absorbing potential outside the physical area which simulates the outgoing boundary condition approximately. The scattering problem is then recasted into the Schroedinger like equation with a source term in the interaction region and with the vanishing boundary condition at the boundary. We demonstrate usefulness of the method taking a few examples. Deuteron breakup reactions are examined comparing present results with those by the conti…
The study of exotic nuclear structures, such as halo nuclei, is usually performed through nuclear reactions. An accurate reaction model coupled to a realistic description of the projectile is needed to correctly interpret experimental data. In this contribution, we briefly summarise the assumptions made within the modelling of reactions involving halo nuclei. We describe briefly the Continuum-Discretised Coupled Channel method (CDCC) and the Dynamical Eikonal Approximation (DEA) in particular and present a comparison between them for the breakup of 15C on Pb at 68AMeV. We show the problem face…
We discuss the use of one-nucleon breakup reactions of loosely bound nuclei at intermediate energies as an indirect method in nuclear astrophysics. These are peripheral processes, therefore we can extract asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC) from which reaction rates of astrophysical interest can be inferred. To show the usefulness of the method, three different cases are discussed. In the first, existing experimental data for the breakup of 8B at energies from 30 to 1000 MeV/u and of 9C at 285 MeV/u on light through heavy targets are analyzed. Glauber model calculations in the eikonal …
The momentum distribution of $^{11}$Be fragments produced by the breakup of $^{12}$Be interacting with a proton target at 700.5 MeV/$u$ energy has been measured at GSI Darmstadt. To obtain the structure information on the anomaly of the $N=8$ neutron shell, the momentum distribution of $^{11}$Be fragments from the one-neutron knockout $^{12}$Be(p,pn) reaction, measured in inverse kinematics, has been analysed in the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) based on a quasi-free scattering scenario. The DWIA analysis shows a surprisingly strong contribution of the neutron $0d_{5/2}$ orbital …
The problem of the calculation of inclusive breakup cross sections in nuclear reactions is reexamined. For that purpose, the post-form theory proposed by Ichimura, Austern and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C32, 431 (1985) is revisited, and an alternative derivation of the non-elastic breakup part of the inclusive breakup is presented, making use of the coupled-channels optical theorem. Using the DWBA version of this model, several applications to deuteron and $^6$Li reactions are presented and compared with available data. The validity of the zero-range approximation of the DWBA formula is also investig…
We address the problem of the post-prior equivalence in inclusive breakup reactions induced by weakly-bound nuclei. The problem is studied within the DWBA model of Ichimura, Austern, Vincent [Phys. Rev. C32, 431 (1985)]. The post and prior formulas obtained in this model are briefly recalled, and applied to several breakup reactions induced by deuterons and $^6$Li projectiles, to test their actual numerical equivalence. The different contributions of the prior-form formula are also discussed. A critical comparison with the prior-form distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) model of Udagawa an…
Exact four-body equations of Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas are solved for neutron-${}^3\mathrm{He}$ and proton-${}^3\mathrm{H}$ scattering in the energy regime above the four-nucleon breakup threshold. Cross sections and spin observables for elastic, transfer, charge-exchange, and breakup reactions are calculated using realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction models, including the one with effective many-nucleon forces due to explicit $Δ$-isobar excitation. The experimental data are described reasonably well with only few exceptions such as vector analyzing powers.
We develop a four-body model for the inclusive breakup of two-fragment halo projectiles colliding with two-fragment targets. In the case of a short lived projectiles, such as halo nuclei, on a deuteron target, the model allows the extraction of the neutron capture cross section of such projectiles. We supply examples.
Background: Large $α$ yields have been reported over the years in reactions with $^{6}$Li and $^{7}$Li projectiles. Previous theoretical analyses have shown that the elastic breakup (EBU) mechanism (i.e., projectile breakup leaving the target in its ground state) is able to account only for a small fraction of the total $α$ inclusive breakup cross sections, pointing toward the dominance of non-elastic breakup (NEB) mechanisms. Purpose: We aim to provide a systematic study of the $α$ inclusive cross sections observed in nuclear reactions induced by $^{6}$Li projectiles. In addition to estimatin…
The breakup of the radioactive 17F nucleus into a proton and 16O is studied for the reaction 17F + 208Pb --> p + 16O + 208Pb at 65 MeV/nucleon. The possibility of using this reaction as a test case for studying dynamical Coulomb reacceleration effects is assessed. It is shown that the reaction is dominated by elastic nuclear breakup (diffraction dissociation).
We describe a reaction mechanism which is consistent with all available experimental information of high energy three-body breakup processes. The dominating channels are removal of one of the three halo particles leaving the other two either undisturbed or absorbed. We compare with the commonly used deceptive assumption of a decay through two-body resonance states. Our predictions can be tested by measuring neutron-neutron invariant mass spectra.
We calculate the nuclear induced breakup of Be11 and B8 using a more realistic treatment of the diffraction and stripping processes than in previous work. The breakup is treated in the eikonal approximation with a profile function calculated from a realistic optical potential at low energies and from free nucleon-nucleon cross sections at high energies. This treatment gives a good description of measured breakup cross sections, as well as the longitudinal momentum distribution of the core-like fragments, which is narrower than predicted in the transparent limit. The real part of the potential …
Some commonly used approximations for complete fusion and breakup transmission coefficients in collisions of weakly bound projectiles at near barrier energies are assessed. We show that they strongly depend on the adopted classical trajectory and can be significantly improved with proper treatment of the incident and emergent currents in the WKB approximation.
We present an account of the current status of the theoretical treatment of inclusive $(d,p)$ reactions in the breakup-fusion formalism, pointing to some applications and making the connection with current experimental capabilities. Three independent implementations of the reaction formalism have been recently developed, making use of different numerical strategies. The codes also originally relied on two different but equivalent representations, namely the prior (Udagawa-Tamura, UT) and the post (Ichimura-Austern-Vincent, IAV) representations. The different implementations have been benchmark…
A large number of complete fusion excitation functions of reactions including the breakup channel were measured in recent decades, especially in the last few years. It allows us to investigate the systematic behavior of the breakup effects on the complete fusion cross sections. To this end, we perform a systematic study of the breakup effects on the complete fusion cross sections at energies above the Coulomb barrier. The reduced fusion functions F(x) are compared with the universal fusion functions which are used as a uniform standard reference. The complete fusion cross sections at energies …
Absorbing boundary condition approach to nuclear breakup reactions is investigated. A key ingredient of the method is an absorbing potential outside the physical area, which simulates the outgoing boundary condition for scattered waves. After discretizing the radial variables, the problem results in a linear algebraic equation with a sparse coefficient matrix, to which efficient iterative methods can be applicable. No virtual state such as discretized continuum channel needs to be introduced in the method. Basic aspects of the method are discussed by considering a nuclear two-body scattering p…
The integral relations formalism introduced in \cite{bar09,rom11}, and designed to describe 1+$N$ reactions, is extended here to collision energies above the threshold for the target breakup. These two relations are completely general, and in this work they are used together with the adiabatic expansion method for the description of 1+2 reactions. The neutron-deuteron breakup, for which benchmark calculations are available, is taken as a test of the method. The s-wave collision between the $^4$He atom and $^4$He$_2$ dimer above the breakup threshold and the possibility of using soft-core two-b…
The available data on the forward charge exchange of nucleons on the deuteron up to 2GeV per nucleon are reviewed. The value of the inclusive nd->pnn/np->pn cross section ratio is sensitive to the fraction of spin-independent neutron-proton backward scattering. The measurements of the polarisation transfer in d(\vec{n},\vec{p})nn or the deuteron analysing power in p(\vec{d},pp)n in high resolution experiments, where the final nn or pp pair emerge at low excitation energy, depend upon the longitudinal and transverse spin-spin np amplitudes. The relation between these types of experiments is dis…
The sensitivity of elastic breakup to the interior of the projectile wave function is analyzed. Breakup calculations of loosely bound nuclei (8B and 11Be) are performed with two different descriptions of the projectile. The descriptions differ strongly in the interior of the wave function, but exhibit identical asymptotic properties, namely the same asymptotic normalization coefficient, and phase shifts. Breakup calculations are performed at intermediate energies (40-70 MeV/nucleon) on lead and carbon targets as well as at low energy (26 MeV) on a nickel target. No dependence on the projectile…
We investigated three-nucleon (3N) force effects in the final state interaction (FSI) configuration of the d(n, nn)p breakup reaction at the incoming nucleon energy E n = 200 MeV. Although 3N force effects for the elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering cross section at comparable energies are located predominantly in the region of intermediate and backward angles, the corresponding 3N force effects for the integrated FSI configuration breakup cross section are found also at forward scattering angles.
We discuss deuteron $A(d,p)X$ breakup and cumulative pion production $A(d,π)X$ in the framework of constituent quark model of the deuteron. We demonstrate that consideration of the Pauli principle at the quark level, as well as multiple scattering, affect drastically cross section and polarization observables of these reactions and provide good description of the experimental data.
We present a semiclassical and mostly analytical model of elastic neutron breakup reactions for exotic projectiles. Both nuclear and Coulomb induced reactions are considered and the potentials are treated to all orders in the interactions. Furthermore we introduce a technique which allows the use of the full Coulomb potential, thus including all multipoles besides the dipole. Results for deeply bound states as well as for halo initial states are presented and it is shown that experiments on heavy targets would be well suited to study exotic nuclei with tightly bound valence nucleons.
An analysis of the elastic and one-neutron removal channel for the reaction 8Li+208Pb reaction at energies around the Coulomb barrier is presented. For the elastic scattering, an optical model analysis of the experimental data is performed. The observed 7Li is interpreted as the superposition of the one-neutron transfer reaction, 208Pb(8Li,7Li)209Pb, and the breakup reaction. The separate contribution of each one of these processes has been calculated within the DWBA formalism. The sum of both contributions explains adequately the experimental angular distribution of 7Li.
The influence on the fusion process of coupling to collective degrees of freedom has been explored. The significant enhancement of the fusion cross section at sub-barrier energies was compared to predictions of one-dimensional barrier penetration models. This was understood in terms of the dynamical processes arising from strong couplings to collective inelastic excitations of the target and projectile. However, in the case of reactions where at least one of the colliding nuclei has a sufficiently low binding energy, for breakup to become an important process, conflicting model predictions and…
The phenomenon of core excitation in the breakup of a two-body halo nucleus is investigated. We show that this effect plays a significant role in the reaction dynamics and, furthermore, its interference with the valence excitation mechanism has sizable and measurable effects on the breakup angular distributions. These effects have been studied in the resonant breakup of 11Be on a carbon target, populating the resonances at 1.78 MeV (5/2+) and 3.41 MeV (3/2+). The calculations have been performed using a recently extension of the DWBA method, which takes into account the effect of core excitati…
