In this article we study commutant lifting, more generally intertwining lifting, for different reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over two domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$, namely the unit ball and the unit polydisc. The reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces we consider are mainly weighted Bergman spaces. Our commutant lifting results are explicit in nature and that is why these results are new even in one variable $(n=1)$ set up.
In this paper we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique solution to the relaxed commutant lifting problem. The obtained conditions are more complicated than those for the classical commutant lifting setting, and earlier obtained sufficient conditions turn out not to be necessary conditions. It is also shown that these conditions simplify in certain special cases.
A Redheffer type description of the set of all contractive solutions to the relaxed commutant lifting problem is given. The description involves a set of Schur class functions which is obtained by combining the method of isometric coupling with results on isometric realizations. For a number of special cases, including the case of the classical commutant lifting theorem, the description yields a proper parameterization of the set of all contractive solutions, but examples show that, in general, the Schur class function determining the contractive lifting does not have to be unique. Also some s…
Consider a nonzero contraction $T$ and a bounded operator $X$ satisfying $TX=qXT$ for a complex number $q$. There are some interesting results in the literature on $q$-commuting dilation and $q$-commutant lifting of such pair $(T,X)$ when $|q|=1$. Here we improve a few of them to the class of scalars $q$ satisfying $|q|\leq \dfrac{1}{\|T\|}$.
It is well known that the solutions of a (relaxed) commutant lifting problem can be described via a linear fractional representation of the Redheffer type. The coefficients of such Redheffer representations are analytic operator-valued functions defined on the unit disc D of the complex plane. In this paper we consider the converse question. Given a Redheffer representation, necessary and sufficient conditions on the coefficients are obtained guaranteeing the representation to appear in the description of the solutions to some relaxed commutant lifting problem. In addition, a result concerning…
A time-variant analogue of an interpolation problem equivalent to the relaxed commutant lifting problem is introduced and studied. In a somewhat less general form the problem already appears in the analysis of the set of all solutions to the three chain completion problem. The interpolants are upper triangular operator matrices of which the columns induce contractive operators. The set of all solutions of the problem is described explicitly. The results presented are time-variant analogues of the main theorems in [A.E. Frazho, S. ter Horst, and M.A. Kaashoek, All solutions to the relaxed commu…
The description of all solutions to the relaxed commutant lifting problem in terms of an underlying contraction, obtained earlier in joint work of the author with A.E. Frazho and M.A. Kaashoek, is transformed into a linear fractional Redheffer state space form. Under certain additional conditions the coefficient functions in this representation are described explicitly in terms of the original data. The main theorem is a generalization of the Redheffer description of all solutions to the classical commutant lifting problem. To illustrate the result a relaxed version of the Nehari extension pro…
This paper presents a few additions to commutant lifting theory. An operator interpolation problem is introduced and shown to be equivalent to the relaxed commutant lifting problem. Using this connection a description of all solutions of the former problem is given. Also a new application, involving bounded operators induced by $H^2$ operator-valued functions, is presented.
A new description is given of all solutions to the relaxed commutant lifting problem. The method of proof is also different from earlier ones, and uses only an operator-valued version of a classical lemma on harmonic majorants.
The main result is a test function style commutant lifting theorem for an annulus A. The test functions are the minimal inner functions for A. The model space is the Sarason Hardy Hilbert space for A uniquely determined by the fact that its reproducing kernel has no zeros.
A new functional model for pairs of commuting isometries is described. Intertwining operators between such models are then studied in order to approach the classification of invariant subspaces of such pairs.
It is known that the set of all solutions of a commutant lifting and other interpolation problems admits a Redheffer linear-fractional parametrization. The method of unitary coupling identifies solutions of the lifting problem with minimal unitary extensions of a partially defined isometry constructed explicitly from the problem data. A special role is played by a particular unitary extension, called the central or universal unitary extension. The coefficient matrix for the Redheffer linear-fractional map has a simple expression in terms of the universal unitary extension. The universal unitar…
If $T= \big[ T_1 ... T_n\big]$ is a row contraction with commuting entries, and the Arveson dilation is $\tilde T= \big[ \tilde T_1 ... \tilde T_n\big]$, then any operator $X$ commuting with each $T_i$ dilates to an operator $Z$ of the same norm which commutes with each $\tilde T_i$.
This paper concerns a commutant lifting theorem and a Nevanlinna-Pick type interpolation result in the setting of multipliers from vector-valued Drury-Arveson space to a large class of vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$. The special case of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces includes all natural examples of Hilbert spaces like Hardy space, Bergman space and weighted Bergman spaces over the unit ball.
We take a new look at dilation theory for nonself-adjoint operator algebras. Among the extremal (co)extensions of a representation, there is a special property of being fully extremal. This allows a refinement of some of the classical notions which are important when one moves away from standard examples. We show that many algebras including graph algebras and tensor algebras of C*-correspondences have the semi-Dirichlet property which collapses these notions and explains why they have a better dilation theory. This leads to variations of the notions of commutant lifting and Ando's theorem. Th…
We introduce a "dual-space approach" to mixed Nevanlinna-Pick/Carathéodory-Schur interpolation in Banach spaces X of holomorphic functions on the disk. Our approach can be viewed as complementary to the well-known commutant lifting approach of D. Sarason and B. Nagy-C.Foiaş. We compute the norm of the minimal interpolant in X by a version of the Hahn-Banach theorem, which we use to extend functionals defined on a subspace of kernels without increasing their norm. This Functional extensions lemma plays a similar role as Sarason's Commutant lifting theorem but it only involves the predual of X a…
When is the collection of $\mathsf S$-Toeplitz operators with respect to a tuple of commuting bounded operators $\mathsf S= (S_1, S_2, \ldots , S_{d-1}, P)$, which has the symmetrized polydisc as a spectral set, non-trivial? The answer is in terms of powers of $P$ as well as in terms of a unitary extension. En route, Brown-Halmos relations are investigated. A commutant lifting theorem is established. Finally, we establish a general result connecting the $C^*$-algebra generated by the commutant of $\mathsf S$ and the commutant of its unitary extension $\mathsf R$.
There are several proofs of the classical commutant lifting and intertwining lifting theorems in the literature. In this article, we present analogous proofs to a few $Q$-commuting lifting and $Q$-intertwining lifting theorems. We provide several proofs and show explicit constructions of Ando-type dilations for a pair of $Q$-commuting contractions $(T_1,T_2)$ when $Q$ is a bounded operator. We establish a few connections of these results with graph theory.
Motivated by the theory of weighted shifts on directed trees and its multivariable counterpart, we address the question of identifying commutant and reflexivity of the multiplication $d$-tuple $\mathscr M_z$ on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathscr H$ of $E$-valued holomorphic functions on $Ω$, where $E$ is a separable Hilbert space and $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb C^d$ admitting bounded approximation by polynomials. In case $E$ is a finite dimensional cyclic subspace for $\mathscr M_z$, under some natural conditions on the $B(E)$-valued kernel associated with $\mathscr H$, the c…
In this paper we study various key properties for $2$-microlocal Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces with all exponents variable, including the lifting property, embeddings and Fourier multipliers. We also clarify and improve some statements recently published.
The corona problem was motivated by the question of the density of the open unit disk D in the maximal ideal space of the algebra, H1(D), of bounded holomorphic functions on D. In this note we study relationships of the problem with questions in operator theory and complex geometry. We use the framework of Hilbert modules focusing on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions on a domain, in Cm. We interpret several of the approaches to the corona problem from this point of view. A few new observations are made along the way. 2012 MSC: 46515, 32A36, 32A70, 30H80, 30H10, 32A65, …
Let p be a polynomial in one variable. It is shown that the universal C*-algebra of the relation p(x)=0, \|x\| \le C is semiprojective, residually finite-dimensional and has trivial extension group.
The symmetrized bidisc has been a rich field of holomorphic function theory and operator theory. A certain well-known reproducing kernel Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on the symmetrized bidisc resembles the Hardy space of the unit disc in several aspects. This space is known as the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc. We introduce the study of those operators on the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc that are analogous to Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space of the unit disc. More explicitly, we first study multiplication operators on a bigger space (an $L^2$-space) and then stu…
Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, w…
