Previous studies have shown that the frequency content of an illumination affects the convergence rate and reconstruction quality of ptychographic reconstructions. In this numerical study, we demonstrate that structuring a large illumination as a modified uniformly redundant array (MURA) can yield higher resolution and faster convergence for ptychography by improving the signal-to-noise ratio of high spatial frequencies in the far-field diffraction pattern.
We investigate the performance of ptychography with noisy data by analyzing the Cramér Rao Lower Bound. The lower bound of ptychography is derived and numerically computed for both plane wave and structured illumination. The influence of Poisson noise on the ptychography reconstruction is discussed. The computation result shows that, if the estimator is unbiased, the minimum variance for Poisson noise is mostly determined by the illumination power and the transmission function of the object. Monte Carlo analysis is conducted to validate our calculation results for different photon numbers. The…
Achieving high spatial resolution is the goal of many imaging systems. Designing a high-resolution lens with diffraction-limited performance over a large field of view remains a difficult task in imaging system design. On the other hand, creating a complex speckle pattern with wavelength-limited spatial features is effortless and can be implemented via a simple random diffuser. With this observation and inspired by the concept of near-field ptychography, we report a new imaging modality, termed near-field Fourier ptychography, for tackling high-resolution imaging challenges in both microscopic…
This paper presents a microscopic imaging technique that uses variable-angle illumination to recover the complex polarimetric properties of a specimen at high resolution and over a large field-of-view. The approach extends Fourier ptychography, which is a synthetic aperture-based imaging approach to improve resolution with phaseless measurements, to additionally account for the vectorial nature of light. After images are acquired using a standard microscope outfitted with an LED illumination array and two polarizers, our vectorial Fourier Ptychography (vFP) algorithm solves for the complex 2x2…
Ptychography, a form of Coherent Diffractive Imaging, is used with short wavelengths (e.g. X-rays, electron beams) to achieve high-resolution image reconstructions. One of the limiting factors for the reconstruction quality is the accurate knowledge of the illumination probe positions. Recently, many advances have been made to relax the requirement for the probe positions accuracy. Here, we analyze and demonstrate a straightforward approach that can be used to correct the probe positions with sub-pixel accuracy. Simulations and experimental results with visible light are presented in this work…
Fourier ptychography has attracted a wide range of focus for its ability of large space-bandwidth-produce, and quantative phase measurement. It is a typical computational imaging technique which refers to optimizing both the imaging hardware and reconstruction algorithms simultaneously. The data redundancy and inverse problem algorithms are the sources of FPM's excellent performance. But at the same time, this large amount of data processing and complex algorithms also greatly reduce the imaging speed. In this article, we propose a parallel Fourier ptychography reconstruction framework consist…
Fourier ptychography microscopy(FP) is a recently developed computational imaging approach for microscopic super-resolution imaging. By turning on each light-emitting-diode (LED) located on different position on the LED array sequentially and acquiring the corresponding images that contain different spatial frequency components, high spatial resolution and quantitative phase imaging can be achieved in the case of large field-of-view. Nevertheless, FPM has high requirements for the system construction and data acquisition processes, such as precise LEDs position, accurate focusing and appropria…

Ptychography is a well-studied phase imaging method that makes non-invasive imaging possible at a nanometer scale. It has developed into a mainstream technique with various applications across a range of areas such as material science or the defense industry. One major drawback of ptychography is the long data acquisition time due to the high overlap requirement between adjacent illumination areas to achieve a reasonable reconstruction. Traditional approaches with reduced overlap between scanning areas result in reconstructions with artifacts. In this paper, we propose complementing sparsely a…

Fourier ptychography is a recently explored imaging method for overcoming the diffraction limit of conventional cameras with applications in microscopy and yielding high-resolution images. In order to splice together low-resolution images taken under different illumination angles of coherent light source, an iterative phase retrieval algorithm is adopted. However, the reconstruction procedure is slow and needs a good many of overlap in the Fourier domain for the continuous recorded low-resolution images and is also worse under system aberrations such as noise or random update sequence. In this…
Many optical microscopy techniques rely on structured illumination by way of a projected image (eg. structured illumination microscopy) or a tailored angular distribution of light (eg. ptychography). Electro-optical equipment such as spatial light modulators and light emitting diode (LED) arrays are commonly used to sculpt light for these imaging schemes. However, these high-tech devices are not a requirement for light crafting. Patterned diffusely reflecting surfaces also imprint a spatio-angular structure onto reflected light. We demonstrate that paper patterned with a standard commercial pr…
X-ray ptychography is a cutting edge imaging technique providing ultra-high spatial resolutions. In ptychography, phase retrieval, i.e., the recovery of a complex valued signal from intensity-only measurements, is enabled by exploiting a redundancy of information contained in diffraction patterns measured with overlapping illuminations. For samples that are considerably larger than the probe we show that during the iteration the bulk information has to propagate from the sample edges to the center. This constitutes an inherent limitation of reconstruction speed for algorithms that use a flat i…
Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a computational approach geared towards creating high-resolution and large field-of-view images without mechanical scanning. To acquire color images of histology slides, it often requires sequential acquisitions with red, green, and blue illuminations. The color reconstructions often suffer from coherent artifacts that are not presented in regular incoherent microscopy images. As a result, it remains a challenge to employ FPM for digital pathology applications, where resolution and color accuracy are of critical importance. Here we report a deep learni…

Structured light (SL) systems acquire high-fidelity 3D geometry with active illumination projection. Conventional systems exhibit challenges when working in environments with strong ambient illumination, global illumination and cross-device interference. This paper proposes a general-purposed technique to improve the robustness of SL by projecting redundant optical signals in addition to the native SL patterns. In this way, projected signals become more distinguishable from errors. Thus the geometry information can be more easily recovered using simple signal processing and the ``coding gain" …
