Many real-world signal sources are complex-valued, having real and imaginary components. However, the vast majority of existing deep learning platforms and network architectures do not support the use of complex-valued data. MRI data is inherently complex-valued, so existing approaches discard the richer algebraic structure of the complex data. In this work, we investigate end-to-end complex-valued convolutional neural networks - specifically, for image reconstruction in lieu of two-channel real-valued networks. We apply this to magnetic resonance imaging reconstruction for the purpose of accelerating scan times and determine the performance of various promising complex-valued activation functions. We find that complex-valued CNNs with complex-valued convolutions provide superior reconstructions compared to real-valued convolutions with the same number of trainable parameters, over a variety of network architectures and datasets.

The task of MRI fingerprinting is to identify tissue parameters from complex-valued MRI signals. The prevalent approach is dictionary based, where a test MRI signal is compared to stored MRI signals with known tissue parameters and the most similar signals and tissue parameters retrieved. Such an approach does not scale with the number of parameters and is rather slow when the tissue parameter space is large. Our first novel contribution is to use deep learning as an efficient nonlinear inverse mapping approach. We generate synthetic (tissue, MRI) data from an MRI simulator, and use them to tr…

Recent studies show that deep learning (DL) based MRI reconstruction outperforms conventional methods, such as parallel imaging and compressed sensing (CS), in multiple applications. Unlike CS that is typically implemented with pre-determined linear representations for regularization, DL inherently uses a non-linear representation learned from a large database. Another line of work uses transform learning (TL) to bridge the gap between these two approaches by learning linear representations from data. In this work, we combine ideas from CS, TL and DL reconstructions to learn deep linear convol…

The learned features are then applied to random for-ests to classify each MRI image voxel into normal brain tissues and different parts of tumor. The method was evaluated on BRATS 2013 …

Spiral acquisitions are preferred in real-time MRI because of their efficiency, which has made it possible to capture vocal tract dynamics during natural speech. A fundamental limitation of spirals is blurring and signal loss due to off-resonance, which degrades image quality at air-tissue boundaries. Here, we present a new CNN-based off-resonance correction method that incorporates an attention-gate mechanism. This leverages spatial and channel relationships of filtered outputs and improves the expressiveness of the networks. We demonstrate improved performance with the attention-gate, on 1.5…

Accurate quantification of cerebral blood flow (CBF) is essential for the diagnosis and assessment of a wide range of neurological diseases. Positron emission tomography (PET) with radiolabeled water (15O-water) is considered the gold-standard for the measurement of CBF in humans. PET imaging, however, is not widely available because of its prohibitive costs and use of short-lived radiopharmaceutical tracers that typically require onsite cyclotron production. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in contrast, is more readily accessible and does not involve ionizing radiation. This study presents a…
