We present the first measurement of two-mode squeezing between the twin beams produced by a doubly resonant optical parameter oscillator (OPO) in above threshold operation, based on parametric amplification by non degenerate four wave mixing with rubidium $^{85}$Rb. We demonstrate a maximum intensity difference squeezing of -2.7 dB (-3,5 dB corrected for losses) with a pump power of 285 mW and an output power of 12 mW for each beam, operating close to the D1 line of Rb atoms. The possibility to use open cavities combined with the high gain media can provide a strong level of noise compression, and the access to new operation regimes that could not be explored by crystal based OPOs. The spectral bandwidth of the squeezed light is broadened by the cavity dynamics, and the squeezing level is robust for strong pump powers. Stable operation was obtained up to four times above the threshold. Moreover, its operation close to the atomic resonances of alkali atoms allows a natural integration into quantum networks including structures such as quantum memories.

We present the measurement of entanglement between twin beams generated with a doubly resonant optical parameter oscillator (OPO) based on four-wave mixing in hot $^{85}$Rb vapor above threshold. This is the first measurement of entanglement in an OPO with $χ^{(3)}$ media above threshold. We reconstruct the covariance matrix for several configurations and with a full picture of the four side band mode state, we study entanglement between all possible bi-partitions. We show a robust generation of entanglement with stronger generation for a specific pair of modes. For this system, we show that a…
We present a theoretical treatment of conditional preparation of one-photon states from a continuous-wave non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator. We obtain an analytical expression for the output state Wigner function, and we maximize the one-photon state fidelity by varying the temporal mode function of the output state. We show that a higher production rate of high fidelity Fock states is obtained if we condition the outcome on dark intervals around trigger photo detection events.
Non-Gaussian continuous variable states play a central role both in the foundations of quantum theory and for emergent quantum technologies. In particular, "cat states", i.e., two-component macroscopic quantum superpositions, embody quantum coherence in an accessible way and can be harnessed for fundamental tests and quantum information tasks alike. Degenerate optical parametric oscillators can naturally produce single-mode cat states and thus represent a promising platform for their realization and harnessing. We show that a dissipative coupling between degenerate optical parametric oscillato…
Quantum coherent feedback control is a measurement-free control method fully preserving quantum coherence. In this paper we show how time-delayed quantum coherent feedback can be used to control the degree of squeezing in the output field of a cavity containing a degenerate parametric oscillator. We focus on the specific situation of Pyragas-type feedback control where time-delayed signals are fed back directly into the quantum system. Our results show how time-delayed feedback can enhance or decrease the degree of squeezing as a function of time delay and feedback strength.
Experimental investigation to influence of pump phase fluctuation on phase-correlation of output optical fields from a non-degenerate parametric oscillator
We present the quantum theory of coherent Ising machines based on networks of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPOs). In a simple model consisting of two coupled DOPOs, both positive-$P$ representation and truncated Wigner representation predict quantum correlation and inseparability between the two DOPOs in spite of the open-dissipative nature of the system. Here, we apply the truncated Wigner representation method to coherent Ising machines with thermal, vacuum, and squeezed reservoir fields. We find that the probability of finding the ground state of a one-dimensional Ising model…
We propose and analyse a nonlinear optical apparatus in which the direction of asymmetric steering is controllable within the apparatus, rather than by adding noise to measurements. Using a nondegenerate parametric oscillator with an injected signal field, we show how the directionality and extent of the steering can be readily controlled for output modes which can be up to one octave apart. The two downconverted modes, which exhibit the greater violations of the steering inequalities, can also be controlled to exhibit asymmetric steering in some regimes.
A scheme to encode arbitrarily long integer pairs on degenerate optical parametric oscillations multiplexed in time is proposed. The classical entanglement between the polarization directions and the phases of the oscillating pulses, regarded as two computational registers, furnishes the integer correlations within each pair. We show the major algorithmic steps, modular exponentiation and discrete Fourier transform, of Shor's quantum factoring algorithm can be executed in the registers as pulse interferences under the assistance of external logics. The factoring algorithm is thus rendered equi…
Nonlinear quantum optical systems are of paramount relevance for modern quantum technologies, as well as for the study of dissipative phase transitions. Their nonlinear nature makes their theoretical study very challenging and hence they have always served as great motivation to develop new techniques for the analysis of open quantum systems. In this article we apply the recently developed self-consistent projection operator theory to the degenerate optical parametric oscillator to exemplify its general applicability to quantum optical systems. We show that this theory provides an efficient me…
We generated time-multiplexed degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) pulses using a nonlinear fiber Sagnac loop as a phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA) where the pump and amplified light in pump-signal-idler degenerate four-wave mixing can be spatially separated. By placing the PSA in a fiber cavity, we successfully generated more than 5,000 time-multiplexed DOPO pulses. We confirmed the bifurcation of pulse phases to 0 or $π$ relative to the pump phase, which makes them useful for representing Ising spins in an Ising model solver based on coherent optical oscillator networks. We also co…
We theoretically and numerically study the quantum dynamics of two degenerate optical parametric oscillators with mutual injections. The cavity mode in the optical coupling path between the two oscillator facets is explicitly considered. Stochastic equations for the oscillators and mutual injection path based on the positive $P$ representation are derived. The system of two gradually pumped oscillators with out-of-phase mutual injections is simulated, and its quantum state is investigated. When the incoherent loss of the oscillators other than the mutual injections is small, the squeezed quadr…
Multimode optomechanical systems are an emerging platform for studying fundamental aspects of matter near the quantum ground state and are useful in sensitive sensing and measurement applications. We study optomechanical cooling in a system where two nearly degenerate mechanical oscillators are coupled to a single microwave cavity. Due to an optically mediated coupling the two oscillators hybridize into a bright mode with strong optomechanical cooling rate and a dark mode nearly decoupled from the system. We find that at high coupling, sideband cooling of the dark mode is strongly suppressed. …
We present an experimental scheme of implementing multiple spins in a classical XY model using a non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) network. We built an NOPO network to simulate a one-dimensional XY Hamiltonian with 5000 spins and externally controllable effective temperatures. The XY spin variables in our scheme are mapped onto the phases of multiple NOPO pulses in a single ring cavity and interactions between XY spins are implemented by mutual injections between NOPOs. We show the steady-state distribution of optical phases of such NOPO pulses is equivalent to the Boltzmann …
Simulating a network of Ising spins with physical systems is now emerging as a promising approach for solving mathematically intractable problems. Here we report a large-scale network of artificial spins based on degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPO), paving the way towards a photonic Ising machine capable of solving difficult combinatorial optimization problems. We generated >10,000 time-division-multiplexed DOPOs using dual-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly nonlinear fibre (HNLF) placed in a fibre cavity. Using those DOPOs, a one-dimensional (1D) Ising model was simulated by…

We report the finding of "triply magic" conditions (the doubly magic frequency-intensity conditions of an optical dipole trap plus the magic magnetic field) for the microwave transitions of optically trapped alkali-metal atoms. The differential light shift (DLS) induced by a degenerate two-photon process is adopted to compensate a DLS associated with the one-photon process. Thus, doubly magic conditions for the intensity and frequency of the optical trap beam can be found. Moreover, the DLS decouples from the magnetic field in a linearly polarized optical dipole trap, so that the magic conditi…
We investigate network of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPOs) as a model of the coherent Ising machine, an architecture for solving Ising problems. The network represents the interaction in the Ising model, which is a generalization of a previously proposed one for the two-DOPO case. Dynamics of the DOPOs is described by the Fokker-Planck equation in the positive $P$ representation. We obtain approximate steady state distributions for arbitrary Ising problems under some ansatz. Using the method of statistical mechanics, we analytically demonstrate that the most probable states in…

Experimental investigation of amplitude and phase quantum correlations in a type II OPO above threshold: from the non-degenerate to the degenerate operation
Degenerate optomechanical parametric oscillators are optical resonators in which a mechanical degree of freedom is coupled to a cavity mode that is nonlinearly amplified via parametric down-conversion of an external pumping laser. Below a critical pumping power the down-converted field is purely quantum-mechanical, making the theoretical description of such systems very challenging. Here we introduce a theoretical approach that is capable of describing this regime, even at the critical point itself. We find that the down-converted field can induce significant mechanical cooling and identify th…
In the Schroedinger picture, we find explicit solutions for two models of degenerate parametric oscillators in the case of multiparameter squeezed input photons. The corresponding photon statistics and Wigner's function are also derived in coordinate representation. Their time evolution is investigated in detail. The unitary transformation is briefly discussed too.
White noise analysis is used to derive the propagator of an open quantum system consisting of a harmonic oscillator which is coupled to an environment consisting of N multimode harmonic oscillators. The quantum propagators are obtained after solving for the normal modes of the system-environment interaction in order to decouple the coordinates in the Lagrangian describing the dynamics of the system, the environment and their interaction with each other. The decoupled Lagrangian is then used in the path integral corresponding to the propagator of the system, with the path integral evaluated usi…
We consider an electromechanical system where a microwave cavity is coupled to a mechanical resonator, with a mechanical frequency twice the microwave frequency. In this regime, the effective photon-phonon interaction is equivalent to that of a degenerate parametric amplifier, instead of the typical radiation pressure interaction. If the mechanical resonator is strongly driven, it undergoes a phase transition to a state where the energy pumped into the mechanical mode is entirely converted to the photonic mode. Quantum fluctuations smear this phase transition. We describe these effects with a …

Recently, the coherent Ising machine (CIM) as a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) network has been researched to solve Ising combinatorial optimization problems. We formulate a theoretical model for the CIM with discrete-time measurement feedback processes, and perform numerical simulations for the simplest network, composed of two degenerate optical parametric oscillator pulses with the anti-ferromagnetic mutual coupling. We evaluate the extent to which quantum coherence exists during the optimization process.
We develop a theory for non-degenerate parametric resonance in a tunable superconducting cavity. We focus on nonlinear effects that are caused by nonlinear Josephson elements connected to the cavity. We analyze parametric amplification in a strong nonlinear regime at the parametric instability threshold, and calculate maximum gain values. Above the threshold, in the parametric oscillator regime the linear cavity response diverges at the oscillator frequency at all pump strengths. We show that this divergence is related to the continuous degeneracy of the free oscillator state with respect to t…
Recent advances in the development of modern quantum technologies have opened the possibility of studying the interplay between spontaneous parametric down-conversion and optomechanics, two of the most fundamental nonlinear optical processes. Apart from practical reasons, such scenario is very interesting from a fundamental point of view, because it allows exploring the optomechanical interaction in the presence of a strongly quantum-correlated field, the spontaneously down-converted mode. In this work we analyze such problem from two approximate but valuable perspectives: the classical limit …
We study statistics of work done by two classical electric field pumps (two-photon and one-photon resonant pumps) on a quantum optical oscillator. We compute moment generating function for the energy change of the oscillator, interpreted as work done by the classical drives on the quantum oscillator starting out in a thermalized Boltzmann state. The moment generating function is inverted, analytically when only one of the pumps is turned on and numerically when both the pumps are turned on, to get the probability function for the work. The resulting probability function for the work done by th…
Cryogenic operation in conjunction with new test-mass materials promises to reduce the sensitivity limitations from thermal noise in gravitational-wave detectors. The currently most advanced materials under discussion are crystalline silicon as a substrate with amorphous silicon-based coatings. They require, however, operational wavelengths around 2 $\mathrmμ$m to avoid laser absorption. Here, we present a light source at 2128 nm based on a degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) to convert light from a 1064 nm non-planar ring-oscillator (NPRO). We achieve an external conversion effici…
