Finding a reasonably good upper bound for the clique number of Paley graphs is an open problem in additive combinatorics. A recent breakthrough by Hanson and Petridis using Stepanov's method gives an improved upper bound on Paley graphs defined on a prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$, where $p \equiv 1 \pmod 4$. We extend their idea to the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $q=p^{2s+1}$ for a prime $p\equiv 1 \pmod 4$ and a non-negative integer $s$. We show the clique number of the Paley graph over $\mathbb{F}_{p^{2s+1}}$ is at most $\min \bigg(p^s \bigg\lceil \sqrt{\frac{p}{2}} \bigg\rceil, \sqrt{\frac{q}{2}}+\frac{p^s+1}{4}+\frac{\sqrt{2p}}{32}p^{s-1}\bigg)$.
Let $GP(q,d)$ be the $d$-Paley graph defined on the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. It is notoriously difficult to improve the trivial upper bound $\sqrt{q}$ on the clique number of $GP(q,d)$. In this paper, we investigate the connection between Gauss sums over a finite field and the maximum cliques of their corresponding generalized Paley graphs. We show that the trivial upper bound on the clique number of $GP(q,d)$ is tight if and only if $d \mid (\sqrt{q}+1)$, which strengthens the previous related results by Broere-Döman-Ridley and Schneider-Silva. We also obtain a new simple proof of Stickel…
Let $n=2^s p_{1}^{α_{1}}\cdots p_{k}^{α_{k}}$, where $s=0$ or $1$, $α_i\geq 1$, and the distinct primes $p_i$ satisfy $p_i\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ for all $i=1, \ldots, k$. Let $\mathbb{Z}_n^\ast$ denote the group of units in the commutative ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$. Recently, we defined a Paley-type graph $G_n$ of order $n$ as the graph whose vertex set is $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and $xy$ is an edge if $x-y\equiv a^2\pmod n$ for some $a\in\mathbb{Z}_n^\ast$. The Paley-type graph $G_n$ resembles the classical Paley graph in a number of ways, and adds to the list of generalizations of the Paley graph. Computing the…
It is known that the number of directions formed by a Cartesian product $A \times B \subset AG(2,p)$ is at least $|A||B| - \min\{|A|,|B|\} + 2$, provided $p$ is prime and $|A||B|<p$. This implies the best known upper bound on the clique number of the Paley graph over $\mathbb{F}_p$. In this paper, we extend this result to $AG(2,q)$, where $q$ is a prime power. We also give improved upper bounds on the clique number of generalized Paley graphs over $\mathbb{F}_q$. In particular, for a cubic Paley graph, we improve the trivial upper bound $\sqrt{q}$ to $0.769\sqrt{q}+1$. In general, as an applic…
In this paper we prove that balanced characteristic functions of canonical cliques in a Paley graph of square order $P(q^2)$ span the $\frac{-1+q}{2}$-eigenspace of the graph. This is the first of two steps to a second proof of the analogue of Erdös-Ko-Rado theorem for Paley graphs of square order (the first proof was given by A. Blokhuis in 1984).
In this paper we find new maximal cliques of size $\frac{q+1}{2}$ or $\frac{q+3}{2}$, accordingly as $q\equiv 1(4)$ or $q\equiv 3(4)$, in Paley graphs of order $q^2$, where $q$ is an odd prime power. After that we use new cliques to define a family of eigenfunctions corresponding to both non-principal eigenvalues and having the cardinality of support $q+1$, which is the minimum by the weight-distribution bound.
We study subgraphs of Paley graphs of prime order $p$ induced on the sets of vertices extending a given independent set of size $a$ to a larger independent set. Using a sufficient condition proved in the author's recent companion work, we show that a family of character sum estimates would imply that, as $p \to \infty$, the empirical spectral distributions of the adjacency matrices of any sequence of such subgraphs have the same weak limit (after rescaling) as those of subgraphs induced on a random set including each vertex independently with probability $2^{-a}$, namely, a Kesten-McKay law wi…
Let $q$ be an odd prime power. Denote by $r(q)$ the value of $q$ modulo 4. In this paper, we establish a linear fractional correspondence between two types of maximal cliques of size $\frac{q+r(q)}{2}$ in the Paley graph of order $q^2$.
A well-known conjecture due to van Lint and MacWilliams states that if $A$ is a subset of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ such that $0,1 \in A$, $|A|=q$, and $a-b$ is a square for each $a,b \in A$, then $A$ must be the subfield $\mathbb{F}_q$. This conjecture is often phrased in terms of the maximum cliques in Paley graphs. It was first proved by Blokhuis and later extended by Sziklai to generalized Paley graphs. In this paper, we give a new proof of the conjecture and its variants, and show this Erdős-Ko-Rado property of Paley graphs extends to a larger family of Cayley graphs, which we call Peisert-type …
The Lovász theta number is a semidefinite programming bound on the clique number of (the complement of) a given graph. Given a vertex-transitive graph, every vertex belongs to a maximal clique, and so one can instead apply this semidefinite programming bound to the local graph. In the case of the Paley graph, the local graph is circulant, and so this bound reduces to a linear programming bound, allowing for fast computations. Impressively, the value of this program with Schrijver's nonnegativity constraint rivals the state-of-the-art closed-form bound recently proved by Hanson and Petridis. We…

In this work, given $(R,\frak m)$ a finite commutative local ring with identity and $k \in \mathbb{N}$ with $(k,|R|)=1$, we study the number of cliques of any size in the Cayley graph $G_R(k)=Cay(R,U_R(k))$ %and $W_R(k)=Cay(R,S_R(k))$ with $U_R(k)=\{x^k : x\in R^*\}$. Using the known fact that the graph $G_R(k)$ can be obtained by blowing-up the vertices of $G_{\mathbb{F}_{q}}(k)$ a number $|\frak{m}|$ of times, with independence sets the cosets of $\frak{m}$, where $q$ is the size of the residue field $R/\frak m$. Then, by using the above blowing-up, we reduce the study of the number of cliqu…
We describe a new class of maximal cliques, with a vector space structure, of Cayley graphs defined on the additive group of a field. In particular, we show that in the cubic Paley graph with order $q^3$, the subfield with $q$ elements forms a maximal clique. Similar statements also hold for quadruple Paley graphs and Peisert graphs with quartic order.
Motivated by the well-known Paley graphs over finite fields and their generalizations, in this paper we explore a natural multiplicative-additive analogue of such graphs arising from vector spaces over finite fields. Namely, if $n\ge 2$ and $U\subsetneq \mathbb F_{q^n}$ is an $\mathbb F_q$-vector space, $G_{U}$ is the (undirected) graph with vertex set $V(G_U)=\mathbb F_{q^n}$ and edge set $E(G_U)=\{(a, b)\in \mathbb F_{q^n}^2\,|\, a\ne b, ab\in U\}$. We describe the structure of an arbitrary maximal clique in $G_U$ and provide bounds on the clique number $ω(G_U)$ of $G_U$. In particular, we c…
We prove that a family of pseudo-Paley graphs of square order obtained from unions of cyclotomic classes satisfies the Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) module property, in a sense that the characteristic vector of each maximum clique is a linear combination of characteristic vectors of canonical cliques. This extends the EKR-module property of Paley graphs of square order and solves a problem proposed by Godsil and Meagher. Different from previous works, which heavily rely on tools from number theory, our approach is purely combinatorial in nature. The main strategy is to view these graphs as block graphs …
We have extended the Paley constructions for Hadamard matrices and obtained some series of Hadamard matrices. Especially Paley construction-II is applicable for odd prime power q is congruent to 1(mod 4) however our method is applicable for any odd prime power. Some of which are non-isomorphic to the matrices obtained by standard Paley constructions, Sylvester construction, Williamson construction or combination of either of these constructions with Sylvester construction. In fact we have used the conference matrix of order prime power q in some different manner which is applicable for any odd…
Let $q$ be a prime power such that $q\equiv 1\pmod{4}$. The Paley graph of order $q$ is the graph with vertex set as the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and edges defined as, $ab$ is an edge if and only if $a-b$ is a non-zero square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. We attempt to construct a similar graph of order $n$, where $n\in\mathbb{N}$. For suitable $n$, we construct the graph where the vertex set is the finite commutative ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and edges defined as, $ab$ is an edge if and only if $a-b\equiv x^2\pmod{n}$ for some unit $x$ of $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We look at some properties of this graph. For primes…
We determine new upper bounds for the clique numbers of strongly regular graphs in terms of their parameters. These bounds improve on the Delsarte bound for infinitely many feasible parameter tuples for strongly regular graphs, including infinitely many parameter tuples that correspond to Paley graphs.
We show that the Waring's number over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, denoted $g(k,q)$, when exists, coincides with the diameter of the generalized Paley graph $Γ(k,q)=Cay(\mathbb{F}_{q},R_k)$ with $R_k=\{x^k : x\in \mathbb{F}_q^*\}$. We find infinite new families of exact values of $g(k,q)$ from a characterization of graphs $Γ(k,q)$ which are also Hamming graphs previously proved by Lim and Praeger in 2009. Then, we show that every positive integer is the Waring number for some pair $(k,q)$ with $q$ not a prime. Finally, we find a lower bound for $g(k,p)$ with $p$ prime by using that $Γ(k,p)$ …
A graph is Cartesian decomposable if it is isomorphic to a Cartesian product of (more than one) strictly smaller graphs, each of which has more than one vertex and admits no such decomposition. These smaller graphs are called the Cartesian-prime factors of the Cartesian decomposition, and were shown, by Sabidussi and Vizing independently, to be uniquely determined up to isomorphism. We characterise by their parameters those generalised Paley graphs which are Cartesian decomposable, and we prove that for such graphs, the Cartesian-prime factors are themselves smaller generalised Paley graphs. T…
Fix positive integers $p,q,$ and $r$ so that $p$ is prime, $q=p^r$, and $q\equiv 1$ (mod $4$). Fix a graph $G$ as follows: If $r$ is odd or $p\not\equiv 3$ (mod $4$), let $G$ be the $q$-vertex Paley graph; if $r$ is even and $p\equiv 3$ (mod $4$), let $G$ be either the $q$-vertex Paley graph or the $q$-vertex Peisert graph. We use the subgraph structure of $G$ to construct four sequences of $2$-designs, and we compute their parameters. Letting $k_4$ denote the number of $4$-vertex cliques in $G$, we create $62$ additional sequences of $2$-designs from $G$, and show how to express their paramet…
Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer. Let $q$ be a prime power such that $q \equiv 1 \pmod {k}$ if $q$ is even, or, $q \equiv 1 \pmod {2k}$ if $q$ is odd. The generalized Paley graph of order $q$, $G_k(q)$, is the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q$ where $ab$ is an edge if and only if ${a-b}$ is a $k$-th power residue. We provide a formula, in terms of finite field hypergeometric functions, for the number of complete subgraphs of order four contained in $G_k(q)$, $\mathcal{K}_4(G_k(q))$, which holds for all $k$. This generalizes the results of Evans, Pulham and Sheehan on the original ($k$=2) Paley …
Recently, Feng and Xiang \cite{FX113} found a new construction of skew Hadamard difference sets in elementary abelian groups. In this paper, we introduce a new invariant for equivalence of skew Hadamard difference sets, namely triple intersection numbers modulo a prime, and discuss inequivalence between Feng-Xiang skew Hadamard difference sets and the Paley difference sets. As a consequence, we show that their construction produces infinitely many skew Hadamard difference sets inequivalent to the Paley difference sets.
There is a Paley graph for each prime power $q$ such that $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$. The vertex set is the field $\mathbb Fq$ and two vertices $x$ and $y$ are joined by an edge if and only if $x-y$ is a nonzero square of $\mathbb Fq$. We compute the Smith normal forms of the adjacency matrix and Laplacian matrix of a Paley graph.
We give a reduction formula for the Waring number $g(k,q)$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. By exploiting the relation between $g(k,q)$ with the diameter of the generalized Paley graph $Γ(k,q)$ and by using the characterization due to Pearce and Praeger (2019) of those $Γ(k,q)$ which are Cartesian decomposable, we obtain the reduction formula $$g(\tfrac{p^{ab}-1}{bc},p^{ab}) = b g(\tfrac{p^a-1}{c},p^a)$$ for $p$ prime and $a,b,c$ positive integers under certain arithmetic conditions. Then, we find some arithmetic conditions to apply the formula above, which allow us to obtain many infinite …
Partial difference sets with parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)=(v, (v-1)/2, (v-5)/4, (v-1)/4)$ are called Paley type partial difference sets. In this note we prove that if there exists a Paley type partial difference set in an abelian group $G$ of an order not a prime power, then $|G|=n^4$ or $9n^4$, where $n>1$ is an odd integer. In 2010, Polhill \cite{Polhill} constructed Paley type partial difference sets in abelian groups with those orders. Thus, combining with the constructions of Polhill and the classical Paley construction using non-zero squares of a finite field, we completely answer the following…
We prove that the clique number of the Paley graph is at most $\sqrt{p/2} + 1$, and that any supposed additive decompositions of the set of quadratic residues can only come from co-Sidon sets.

To construct a Paley graph, we fix a finite field and consider its elements as vertices of the Paley graph. Two vertices are connected by an edge if their difference is a square in the field. We will study some important properties of the Paley graphs. In particular, we will show that the Paley graphs are connected, symmetric, and self-complementary. Also we will show that the Paley graph of order q is (q-1)/2 -regular, and every two adjacent vertices have (q-5)/4 common neighbors, and every two non-adjacent vertices have q-1/4 common neighbors, which means that the Paley graphs are strongly r…
An \emph{edge coloring} of a graph $G$ is strong if each color class is an induced matching of $G$. The \emph{strong chromatic index} of $G$, denoted by $χ_{s}^{\prime }(G)$, is the minimum number of colors for which $G$ has a strong edge coloring. The strong chromatic index of $G$ is equal to the chromatic number of the square of the line graph of $G$. The chromatic number of the square of the line graph of $G$ is greater than or equal to the clique number of the square of the line graph of $G$, denoted by $ω(L)$. In this note we prove that $ω(L) \le 1.5 Δ_{G}^2$ for every graph $G$. Our resu…
We prove that the number of directions contained in a set of the form $A \times B \subset AG(2,p)$, where $p$ is prime, is at least $|A||B| - \min\{|A|,|B|\} + 2$. Here $A$ and $B$ are subsets of $GF(p)$ each with at least two elements and $|A||B| <p$. This bound is tight for an infinite class of examples. Our main tool is the use of the Rédei polynomial with Szőnyi's extension. As an application of our main result, we obtain an upper bound on the clique number of a Paley graph, matching the current best bound obtained recently by Hanson and Petridis.
Strongly regular Cayley graphs with Paley parameters over abelian groups of rank 2 were studied in [J.A Davis, Partial difference sets in p-groups, Arch.Math.63 (1994) 103-110; K.H Leung, S.L. Ma, Partial difference sets with Paley parameters, Bull. London Math Soc. 27 (1995) 553-564]. It was shown that such graphs exist iff the corresponding group is isomorphic to ${\mathbb Z}_{p^n} \oplus {\mathbb Z}_{p^n}$, where $p$ is an odd prime. In this paper we classify all strongly regular Cayley graphs over this group using Schur rings method. As a consequence we obtain a complete classification of …
We show that there are four infinite prime graphs such that every infinite prime graph with no infinite clique embeds one of these graphs. We derive a similar result for infinite prime posets with no infinite chain or no infinite antichain.
We consider generalized Paley graphs $Γ(k,q)$, generalized Paley sum graphs $Γ^+(k,q)$, and their corresponding complements $\bar Γ(k,q)$ and $\bar Γ^+(k,q)$, for $k=3,4$. Denote by $Γ= Γ^*(k,q)$ either $Γ(k,q)$ or $Γ^+(k,q)$. We compute the spectra of $Γ(3,q)$ and $Γ(4,q)$ and from them we obtain the spectra of $Γ^+(3,q)$ and $Γ^+(4,q)$ also. Then we show that, in the non-semiprimitive case, the spectrum of $Γ(3,p^{3\ell})$ and $Γ(4,p^{4\ell})$ with $p$ prime can be recursively obtained, under certain arithmetic conditions, from the spectrum of the graphs $Γ(3,p)$ and $Γ(4,p)$ for any $\ell \…
We construct several cyclic $(v;k_1,k_2,k_3;λ)$ difference families with $v\equiv3 \pmod{4}$ a prime and $λ=k_1+k_2+k_3-(3v-1)/4$. Such families can be used in conjunction with the well-known Paley-Todd difference sets to construct skew-Hadamard matrices of order $4v$. Our main result is that we have constructed for the first time the example of skew-Hadamard matrices of orders $4\cdot239=956$ and $4\cdot331=1324$.
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group of order $n$. For any subset $B$ of $G$ with $B=-B$, the Cayley graph $G_B$ is a graph on vertex set $G$ in which $ij$ is an edge if and only if $i-j\in B.$ It was shown by Ben Green that when $G$ is a vector space over a finite field $Z/pZ$, then there is a Cayley graph containing neither a complete subgraph nor an independent set of size more than $clog nloglog n,$ where $c$ is an absolute constant. In this article we observe that a modification of his arguments shows that for an arbitrary finite abelian group of order $n$, there is a Cayley graph containing…
For $q=p^m$ with $p$ prime and $k\mid q-1$, we consider the generalized Paley graph $Γ(k,q) = Cay(\mathbb{F}_q, R_k)$, with $R_k=\{ x^k : x \in \mathbb{F}_q^* \}$, and the irreducible $p$-ary cyclic code $\mathcal{C}(k,q) = \{(\textrm{Tr}_{q/p}(γω^{ik})_{i=0}^{n-1})\}_{γ\in \mathbb{F}_q}$, with $ω$ a primitive element of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $n=\tfrac{q-1}{k}$. We first express the spectra of $Γ(k,q)$ in terms of Gaussian periods. Then, we show that the spectra of $Γ(k,q)$ and $\mathcal{C}(k,q)$ are mutually determined by each other if further $k\mid \tfrac{q-1}{p-1}$. We give $Spec(Γ(k,q))$ exp…
The unitary Cayley graph of $\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$, denoted $G_{\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z}$, is the graph with vertices $0,1,\ldots,$ $n-1$ in which two vertices are adjacent if and only if their difference is relatively prime to $n$. These graphs are central to the study of graph representations modulo integers, which were originally introduced by Erdős and Evans. We give a brief account of some results concerning these beautiful graphs and provide a short proof of a simple formula for the number of cliques of any order $m$ in the unitary Cayley graph $G_{\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z}$. This formula invol…
