The renormalization group relations for the higher-order hadronic vacuum polarization function perturbative expansion coefficients are studied. The folded recurrent and unfolded explicit forms of such relations are obtained. The explicit expression for the coefficients, which incorporate the contributions of the $π^{2}$-terms in the perturbative expansion of the R-ratio of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons, is derived at an arbitrary loop level. The obtained results can be employed as an independent crosscheck of the higher-order perturbative calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarization function and in the studies of the renormalization scale setting in the relevant physical observables.
We discuss the application of the complex-mass scheme to multi-loop diagrams in hadronic effective field theory by considering as an example a two-loop self-energy diagram. We show that the renormalized two-loop diagram satisfies the power counting.
We apply an analytic description to the inclusive decay of the $τ$ lepton. We argue that this method gives not only a self-consistent description of the process both in the timelike region by using the initial expression for $R_τ$ and in the spacelike domain by using the analytic properties of the hadronic correlator, but also leads to the fact that theoretical uncertainties associated with unknown higher-loop contributions and renormalization scheme dependence can be reduced dramatically.
Known perturbative expressions for the decay rates of 115 GeV Higgs particle into either two gluons or a $b\bar{b}$ pair are shown to exhibit renormalization-scale-($μ$)-dependence that is largely removed via renormalization-group/Pade-approximant estimates of these rates' next order contributions. The extrema in $μ$ characterizing both rates, as determined from fully-known orders of perturbation theory, are very nearly equal to corresponding $μ$-insensitive rates obtained via estimation of their next order contributions, consistent with "minimal-sensitivity" expectations.
One of the main sources of theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of the strong coupling from hadronic tau decays stems from the renormalization-group improvement of the series. Perturbative series in QCD are divergent but are (most likely) asymptotic expansions. One needs knowledge about higher orders to be able to choose the optimal renormalization-scale setting procedure. Here, we discuss the use of Padé approximants as a model-independent and robust method to extract information about the higher-order terms. We show that in hadronic $τ$ decays the fixed-order expansion, known as fixed-o…
Extended QCD (XQCD) proposed by Kaplan [1] is an interesting reformulation of QCD with additional bosonic auxiliary fields. While its partition function is kept exactly the same as that of original QCD, XQCD naturally contains properties of low energy hadronic models. We analyze the renormalization group flow of two-dimensional (X)QCD, which is solvable in the limit of large number of colors Nc, to understand what kind of roles the auxiliary degrees of freedom play and how the hadronic picture emerges in the low energy region.
The QCD corrections to the R_τ^{12} moment of the invariant mass distribution in hadronic decays of the tau lepton are discussed. The next-to-next-to-leading order prediction is shown to be stable with respect to change of the renormalization scheme, provided that the contour integral expression is used. The optimized predictions are obtained using the principle of minimal sensitivity to select the preferred renormalization scheme. The optimized predictions for R_τ^{12} and R_τ are used in a simplified fit to the experimental data to determine the strong coupling constant and the parameter cha…
We give a short overview of the theory of the muon anomalous magnetic moment with emphasis on the hadronic light-by-light and the pion loop contribution. We explain the difference between the hidden local symmetry and full VMD pion loop and discuss leading logarithms in the anomalous sector of 2-flavour chiral perturbation theory.
Weak interactions between quarks give rise to hadronic parity violation which can be observed in nuclear and few-nucleon systems. We study the QCD renormalization of the isotensor component of parity violation at next-to-leading order accuracy. The renormalization group is employed to evolve the interaction down to hadronic scales. As the results are renormalization scheme dependent, we compare various schemes, including 't Hooft-Veltman dimensional regularization, and several regularization independent-momentum subtraction schemes.
A complete calculation of the ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ perturbative QCD corrections to the hadronic decay width of the $Z$-boson has recently been performed by Baikov et al.[1]. In their analysis, Baikov et al. relied on the conventional practice of simply guessing the renormalization scale and taking an arbitrary range to estimate the pQCD uncertainties. This procedure inevitably introduces an arbitrary, scheme-dependent theoretical systematic error in the predictions. In this paper, we show that the renormalization scale uncertainties for hadronic $Z$ decays can be greatly reduced by applying the p…
We determine the strong coupling constant α_s from the τhadroni width using a renormalization group summed (RGS) expansion of the QCD Adler function. The main theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of α_s is due to the manner in which renormalization group invariance is implemented, and the as yet uncalculated higher order terms in the QCD perturbative series. We show that new expansion exhibits good renormalization group improvement and the behaviour of the series is similar to that of the standard CIPT expansion. The value of the strong coupling in {\bar{\rm MS}} scheme obtained with the …
The flavor-conserving non-leptonic weak interaction can be studied experimentally through the observation of parity violation in nuclear and few-body systems. At hadronic scales, matrix elements of parity-violating four-quark operators ultimately give rise to the parity violating couplings between hadrons, and such matrix elements can be calculated non-perturbatively using lattice QCD. In this work, we investigate the running of isovector parity-violating operators from the weak scale down to hadronic scales using the renormalization group. We work at next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling,…
We propose a novel renormalization scheme for the hadronic operators. The renormalization factor of the operator in this scheme is normalized by the correlation function at tree level in coordinate space. If we focus on the pseudo scalar operator, then its renormalization factor is related to the mass renormalization factor of the fermion through the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) relation. Using the renormalization factor for the pseudo scalar operator in our scheme, we obtain the mass anomalous dimension of the SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f=12 massless fundamental fermio…
The Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) coupling, $α_s$, is not a physical observable of the theory since it depends on conventions related to the renormalization procedure. We introduce a definition of the QCD coupling, denoted by $\hatα_s$, whose running is explicitly renormalization scheme invariant. The scheme dependence of the new coupling $\hatα_s$ is parameterized by a single parameter $C$, related to transformations of the QCD scale $Λ$. It is demonstrated that appropriate choices of $C$ can lead to substantial improvements in the perturbative prediction of physical observables. As phenomenol…
Using the gauge/gravity duality, we compute the leading order hadronic (HLO) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of muon, amu(HLO). Holographic renormalization is used to obtain a finite vacuum polarization. We find amu(HLO) =470.5 x 10^{-10} in AdS/QCD with two light flavors, which is compared with the currently revised BABAR data estimated from e^+ e^- -> pi^+ pi^- events, amu(HLO)[pipi]=(514.1 +- 3.8) x 10^{-10}.
In this talk we show how it is possible to apply the general scheme of effective scattering theory to the description of hadronic processes. We perform the numerical tests of the tree level bootstrap constraints for renormalization prescriptions in the case of elastic kaon-nucleon scattering process.
We show that the logarithmic derivative of the gauge coupling on the hadronic mass and the cosmological constant term of a gauge theory are related to the gluon condensate of the hadron and the vacuum respectively. These relations are akin to Feynman-Hellmann relations whose derivation for the case at hand are complicated by the construction of the gauge theory Hamiltonian. We bypass this problem by using a renormalisation group equation for composite operators and the trace anomaly. The relations serve as possible definitions of the gluon condensates themselves which are plagued in direct app…
The ALEPH data on hadronic tau-decay is throughly analysed in the framework of QCD. The perturbative calculations are performed in 1-4-loop approximation. The analytical properties of the polarization operators are used in the whole complex q^2 plane. It is shown that the QCD prediction for R_{tau} agrees with the measured value R_{tau} not only for conventional Lambda^{conv}_3 = (618+-29) MeV but as well as for Lambda^{new}_3 = (1666+-7) MeV. The polarization operator calculated using the renormgroup has nonphysical cut [-Lambda^2_3, 0]. If Lambda_3 = Lambda^{conv}_3, the contribution of only…
We define a regularization-independent momentum-subtraction scheme for the $CP$-odd three-gluon operator at dimension six. This operator appears in effective field theories for heavy physics beyond the Standard Model, describing the indirect effect of new sources of $CP$-violation at low energies. In a hadronic context, it induces permanent electric dipole moments. The hadronic matrix elements of the three-gluon operator are non-perturbative objects that should ideally be evaluated with lattice QCD. We define a non-perturbative renormalization scheme that can be implemented on the lattice and …
Two-loop renormalization group equations in the standard model are re-calculated. A new coefficient is found in the beta-function of the quartic coupling and a class of gauge invariants are found to be absent in the beta-functions of hadronic Yukawa couplings. The two-loop beta-function of the Higgs mass parameter is presented in complete form.
A model which combines the perturbative behavior of QCD with low energy phenomenology in a unified framework is developed. This is achieved by applying a similarity transformation to the QCD Hamiltonian which removes interactions between the ultraviolet cutoff and an arbitrary lower scale. Iteration then yields a renormalization group improved effective Hamiltonian at the hadronic energy scale. The procedure preserves the standard ultraviolet behavior of QCD. Furthermore, the Hamiltonian evolves smoothly to a phenomenological low energy behavior below the hadronic scale. This method has the be…
Analytic structure in the strong coupling constant that emerges for some observables in QCD after duality averaging of renormalization group improved amplitudes is discussed. It is shown that perturbation theory calculations are justified for the proper observables related to the two-point correlators of hadronic currents the analytic properties of which are well-established. A particular case of gluonic current correlators is discussed in detail.
In the paper, we study the properties of the $Z$-boson hadronic decay width by using the $\mathcal{O}(α_s^4)$-order quantum chromodynamics (QCD) corrections with the help of the principle of maximum conformality (PMC). By using the PMC single-scale approach, we obtain an accurate renormalization scale-and-scheme independent perturbative QCD (pQCD) correction for the $Z$-boson hadronic decay width, which is independent to any choice of renormalization scale. After applying the PMC, a more convergent pQCD series has been obtained; and the contributions from the unknown $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$-order…
The X(3872) seems to be a loosely-bound hadronic molecule whose constituents are two charm mesons. A novel feature of this molecule is that the mass difference of the constituents is close to the mass of a lighter meson that can be exchanged between them, namely the pion. We analyze this feature in a simple model with spin-0 mesons only. Various observables are calculated to next-to-leading order in the interaction strength of the exchanged meson. Renormalization requires summing a geometric series of next-to-leading order corrections. The dependence of observables on the ultraviolet cutoff ca…
We formulate a general scheme to improve the truncated perturbative expansion in alpha_s by means of the renormalization group in QCD for the single-scale quantities. The procedure is used for the evaluation of hadronic decay rates of tau-lepton and eta_c-charmonium. The scale dependence of result for eta_c is studied in the scheme of fixed value for the MS-bar mass of charmed quark.
Starting from the divergent character of the perturbative expansions in QCD and using the technique of series acceleration by the conformal mappings of the Borel plane, I define a novel, non-power perturbative expansion for the Adler function, which simultaneously implements renormalization-group summation and has a tamed large-order behaviour. The new expansion functions, which replace the standard powers of the coupling, are singular at the origin of the coupling plane and have divergent perturbative expansions, resembling the expanded function itself. Confronting the new perturbative expans…
We present a QCD analysis of the effective weak Hamiltonian at hadronic energy scales for strangeness-nonchanging ($ΔS=0$) hadronic processes. Performing a leading-order renormalization group analysis in QCD from the $W$ to the ${\cal O}(2\,\rm GeV)$ energy scale, we derive the pertinent effective Hamiltonian for hadronic parity violation, including the effects of both neutral and charged weak currents. We compute the complete renormalization group evolution of all isosectors and the evolution through heavy-flavor thresholds for the first time. We show that the additional four-quark operators …
We explore the influence of the current quark mass on observables in the low energy regime of hadronic interactions within a renormalization group analysis of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in its bosonized form. We derive current quark mass expansions for the pion decay constant and the pion mass, and we recover analytically the universal logarithmic dependence. A numerical solution of the renormalization group flow equations enables us to determine effective low energy constants from the model. We find values consistent with the phenomenological estimates used in chiral perturbation theory.
The moments of the hadronic spectral functions are of interest for the extraction of the strong coupling $α_s$ and other QCD parameters from the hadronic decays of the $τ$ lepton. Motivated by the recent analyses of a large class of moments in the standard fixed-order and contour-improved perturbation theories, we consider the perturbative behavior of these moments in the framework of a QCD nonpower perturbation theory, defined by the technique of series acceleration by conformal mappings, which simultaneously implements renormalization-group summation and has a tame large-order behavior. Two …
We study in the BFKL approach the total hadronic cross section for the collision of two virtual photons for energies in the range of LEP2 and in the range of future linear colliders. The BFKL resummation is done at the next-to-leading order in the BFKL Green's function; photon impact factors are taken instead at the leading order, but with the inclusion of the subleading terms required by invariance under changes of the renormalization scale and of the BFKL scale s_0. We compare our results with previous estimates based on a similar kind of approximation.
In the two body hadronic tau decays, such as tau->to K pi (eta)nu, vector mesons play important role. Belle and Babar measured hadronic invariant mass spectrum of tau -> K pi nu decay. To compare the spectrum with theoretical prediction, we develop the chiral Lagrangian with vector mesons in Kimura:2012nx. We compute the form factors of the hadronic tau decay taking account of the quantum corrections of Nambu Goldstone bosons. We also show how to renormalizethe divergence of the Feynman diagrams with arbitrary number of loops and determine the counterterms within one loop using background fiel…
An estimate of the NNLO supersymmetric QCD effects for Higgs production at hadron colliders is given. Assuming an effective gluon-Higgs interaction, these corrections enter only in terms of process-independent, factorizable terms. We argue that the current knowledge of these terms up to NLO is sufficient to derive the NNLO hadronic cross section within the limitations of the standard theoretical uncertainties arising mainly from renormalization and factorization scale variations. The SUSY contributions are small with respect to the QCD effects, which means that the NNLO corrections to Higgs pr…
The systematic approach to study bound states in gluodynamics is presented. The method utilizes flow equations together with low-energy phenomenology, that provides the perturbative renormalization scaling in conjuction with the change of the basis to constituent gluon states. The renormalized effective Hamiltonian of gluodynamics up to the second order is obtained at low energies, which provides a kind of constituent gluon model for glueball bound states. The approach allows to include perturbative QCD corrections into nonperturbative calculations of many-body techniques. The performed numeri…
In this article we wish to present a new method to obtain spectral functions at finite temperature and density from the Functional Renormalization Group (FRG). The FRG offers a powerful non-perturbative tool to deal with phase transitions in strong-interaction matter under extreme conditions and their fluctuation properties. Based on a thermodynamically consistent truncation we derive flow equations for pertinent two-point functions in Minkowski space-time. We demonstrate the feasibility of the method by calculating mesonic spectral functions in hot and dense hadronic matter using the quark-me…
Baryon number symmetry violating theories beyond the standard model with suppressed proton decay rates can be experimentally constrained by data on neutron-antineutron transition rates. In order to apply this constraints, theoretical predictions for the neutron-antineutron transition rates in various models must be available for comparison. Reliable predictions of transition rates between hadronic states must include non-perturbative quantum chromodynamic effects. These can be calculated in a model independent way by calculating six-quark operator matrix elements with lattice quantum chromodyn…

We perform a systematic study of flavor-diagonal parity- and time-reversal-violating operators of dimension six which could arise from physics beyond the SM. We begin at the unknown high-energy scale where these operators originate. At this scale the operators are constrained by gauge invariance which has important consequences for the form of effective operators at lower energies. In particular for the four-quark operators. We calculate one-loop QCD and, when necessary, electroweak corrections to the operators and evolve them down to the electroweak scale and subsequently to hadronic scales. …
We introduce a systematic way to write down the Fock components of a hadronic light-cone wave function with $n$ partons and orbital angular momentum projection $l_z$. We show that the wave function amplitude $ψ_n(x_i,k_{i\perp},l_{zi})$ has a leading behavior $1/(k^2_\perp)^{[n+|l_z|+{\rm min}(n'+|l_z'|)]/2-1}$ when all parton transverse momenta are uniformly large, where $n'$ and $l_z'$ are the number of partons and orbital angular momentum projection, respectively, of an amplitude that mixes under renormalization. The result can be used as a constraint in modeling the hadronic light-cone wav…
The transition in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) from hadronic matter to the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at high temperatures and/or net-baryon densities is associated with the restoration of chiral symmetry and can be investigated in the laboratory via heavy-ion collisions. We study this chiral transition within the functional renormalization group (FRG) approach applied to the two-flavor version of the extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM). The eLSM is an effective model for the strong interaction and features besides scalar and pseudoscalar degrees of freedom also vector and axial- vector mesons. W…
Perturbative QCD corrections to hadronic $τ$ decays and $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadrons below charm are obtained from the Adler function, which at present is known in the chiral limit to five-loop accuracy. Extractions of the strong coupling, $α_s$, from these processes suffer from an ambiguity related to the treatment of unknown higher orders in the perturbative series. In this work, we exploit the method of Padé approximants and its convergence theorems to extract information about higher-order corrections to the Adler function in a systematic way. First, the method is tested in the large…
A fictitious discussion is taken as a point of origin to present novel physical insight into the nature of gauge theory and the potential energy of QCD and QED at short distance. Emphasized is the considerable freedom in the cut-off function which eventually can modify the Coulomb potential of two charges at sufficiently small distances. Emphasized is also that the parameters of the regularization function (the ``cut-off scale'') should not be driven to infinity but kept constant in line with the modern interpretation of renormalization theory. The paper restricts to general aspects. The techn…
The non extensive statistics proposed by C. Tsallis has found wide applicability, being present even in the description of experimental data from high energy collisions. A system with a fractal structure in its energy-momentum space, named thermofractal, was shown to be described thermodynamically by the non extensive statistics. Due to the many common features between thermofractals and Hagedorn's fireballs, this system offers the possibility to investigate the origins of non extensivity in hadronic physics and in QCD. In this regard, the investigation of the scaling properties of thermofract…
The predictive power of perturbative QCD (pQCD) depends on two important issues: (1) how to eliminate the renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities at fixed order, and (2) how to reliably estimate the contributions of unknown higher-order terms using information from the known pQCD series. The Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) satisfies all of the principles of the renormalization group and eliminates the scheme-and-scale ambiguities by the recursive use of the renormalization group equation to determine the scale of the QCD running coupling $α_s$ at each order. Moreover, the resultin…
We prove the all-order exponentiation of soft logarithmic corrections to prompt photon production in hadronic collisions, by generalizing an approach previously developed in the context of Drell-Yan production and deep-inelastic scattering. We show that all large logs in the soft limit can be expressed in terms of two dimensionful variables, and we use the renormalization group to resum them. The resummed results that we obtain are more general though less predictive than those proposed by other groups, in that they can accommodate for violations of Sudakov factorization.
In standard Regge theory with a pomeron intercept a(0)=1+ε, the contribution of the tripe-pomeron amplitude to the t=0 differential cross section for single diffraction dissociation has the form dσ/dM^2(t=0) \sim s^{2ε}/(M^2)^{1+ε}. For ε>0, this form, which is based on factorization, does not scale with energy. From an analysis of p-p and p-pbar data from fixed target to collider energies, we find that such scaling actually holds, signaling a breakdown of factorization. Phenomenologically, this result can be obtained from a scaling law in diffraction, which is embedded in the hypothesis of po…
Asymptotic Pade-approximant methods are utilized to estimate the order $α_s^5$ contribution to the $H\to gg$ rate and the order $α_s^4$ contribution to the $H \to b \bar{b}$ rate. The former process is of particular interest because of the slow convergence evident from the three known terms of its QCD series, which begins with an order $α_s^2$ leading-order term. The order $α_s^5$ contribution to the $H \to gg$ rate is expressed as a degree-3 polynomial in $L \equiv ln (μ^2 / m_t^2 (μ))$. We find that asymptotic Pade-approximant predictions for the coefficients of $L$, $L^2$, and $L^3$ are res…
Recent developments showed that light-cone parton distributions can be studied by investigating the large momentum limit of the hadronic matrix elements of spacelike correlators, which are known as quasi parton distributions. Like a light-cone parton distribution, a quasi parton distribution also contains ultraviolet divergences and therefore needs renormalization. The renormalization of non-local operators in general is not well understood. However, in the case of quasi quark distribution, the bilinear quark operator with a straight-line gauge link appears to be multiplicatively renormalizabl…
In QCD sum-rule methods, the fundamental field-theoretical quantities are correlation functions of composite operators that serve as hadronic interpolating fields. One of the challenges of loop corrections to QCD correlation functions in conventional approaches is the renormalization-induced mixing of composite operators. This involves a multi-step process of first renormalizing the operators, and then calculating the correlation functions in this mixed basis. This process becomes increasingly complicated as the number of operators mixed under renormalization increases, a situation that is exa…
We consider mass-deformed conformal gauge theories (mCGT) and investigate the scaling behaviour of hadronic observables as a function of the fermion mass. Applying renormalization group arguments directly to matrix elements, we find m_H ~ m^{1/(1+gamma*)} and F ~ m^{η_F(gamma*)} for the decay constants, thereby generalizing our results from a previous paper to the entire spectrum. We derive the scaling law m_H m^{1/(1+gamma*)} using the Hellmann-Feynman theorem, and thus provide a derivation which does not rely on renormalization group arguments. Using the new results we reiterate, on the phen…
We present the analytic results of one-loop squared amplitudes for $tW$ production at a hadron collider. The calculation is performed using the method of differential equations. After renormalization, we have checked that the infrared divergences agree with the general structure predicted by anomalous dimensions. The finite remainder contributes to the next-to-next-to-leading order hard function, one of the essential ingredients in the factorization formula of the cross section near the infrared region, which can be used in resummation of all-order soft gluon effects or a differential next-to-…
In the determination of alpha_s from tau decays several different moments of the hadronic spectral functions have been used. In a recent work, we performed an analysis of their perturbative behaviour under two different assumptions for the higher-order coefficients of the Adler function. We showed that the various moments can be divided in a small number of classes. We concluded that some of the moments commonly employed in alpha_s extractions should be avoided due to their bad perturbative behaviour. Furthermore, for the moments that have a good perturbative behaviour, and under reasonable as…
In the extraction of $α_s$ from hadronic tau decay data several moments of the spectral functions have been employed. Furthermore, different renormalization group improvement (RGI) frameworks have been advocated, leading to conflicting values of $α_s$. Recently, we performed a systematic study of the perturbative behavior of these moments in the context of the two main-stream RGI frameworks: Fixed Order Perturbation Theory (FOPT) and Contour Improved Perturbation Theory (CIPT). The yet unknown higher order coefficients of the perturbative series were modelled using the available knowledge of t…
We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the hadronic decay rates of the pseudoscalar quarkonia, at the lowest order in velocity expansion. The validity of NRQCD factorization for inclusive quarkonium decay process, for the first time, is verified to relative order $α_s^2$. As a byproduct, the renormalization group equation (RGE) of the leading NRQCD 4-fermion operator ${\cal O}_1({}^1S_0)$ is also deduced to this perturbative order. By incorporating this new piece of correction together with available relativistic corrections, we find that there exists severe ten…
