We study in the BFKL approach the total hadronic cross section for the collision of two virtual photons for energies in the range of LEP2 and in the range of future linear colliders. The BFKL resummation is done at the next-to-leading order in the BFKL Green's function; photon impact factors are taken instead at the leading order, but with the inclusion of the subleading terms required by invariance under changes of the renormalization scale and of the BFKL scale s_0. We compare our results with previous estimates based on a similar kind of approximation.
We investigate the QCD resummation for the Higgs boson plus a high $P_T$ jet production with large rapidity separations in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The relevant Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) and Sudakov logs are identified and resummed. In particular, we apply recent developments of the transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism in the impact factors, which provides a systematic framework to incorporate both the BFKL and Sudakov resummations.
I discuss the calculation of the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) corrections to the BFKL resummation, as well as some of the issues that arise in this formalism at NLL. In particular I consider the large size and apparent instability of the corrections, and I address some of the attempts to understand and tame them.
The Leding-Logarithmic (LL) gluon Sudakov formfactor is derived from rapidity-ordered BFKL evolution with longitudinal-momentum conservation. This derivation further clarifies the relation between High-Energy and TMD-factorizations and can be extended beyond LL-approximation as well.
We present recent phenomenological studies, tailored on kinematic configurations typical of current and forthcoming analyses at the LHC, for two novel probe channels of the BFKL resummation of energy logarithms. Particular attention is drawn to the behavior of distributions differential in azimuthal angle and rapidity, where significant high-energy effects are expected.
We consider the exclusive production of rho^0 meson pairs in gamma^*gamma^* scattering in the Regge limit of QCD as a probe of BFKL resummation effects and we show the feasibility of the measurement of this process at the ILC.
We calculate the Born order cross-section for the exclusive production of rho meson pairs in e+e- scattering in the Regge limit of QCD and we show the feasibility of the measurement of this process at the ILC. We also investigate the leading and next-to-leading order BFKL evolution, making this process a very clean test of the BFKL resummation effects.
The proton structure function F2 is studied in the low x regime using BFKL evolution. The next to leading logarithmic (NLL) analysis requires the inclusion of running coupling effects which lead to off-diagonal terms in the evolution kernel. An all-orders resummation is used to improve the collinear behavior of the NLL BFKL result. We emphasize the theoretical uncertainties that appear throughout the analysis and give a comparison to the combined HERA data.
We calculate the leading order BFKL amplitude for the exclusive diffractive process γ*_L(Q1^2) γ*_L(Q2^2) \to ρ_L^0 ρ_L^0 in the forward direction, which can be studied in future high energy e^+e^- linear colliders. The resummation effects are very large compared to the fixed-order calculation. We also estimate the next-to-leading logarithmic corrections to the amplitude by using a specific resummation of higher order effects and find a substantial growth with energy, but smaller than in the leading logarithmic approximation.
We perform a global parton fit to DIS and related data, including next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) BFKL resummations in both the massless and massive sectors. The resummed fit improves over a standard next-to-leading order (NLO) DGLAP fit, with a positive definite gluon at the input scale as opposed to the negative gluon seen at NLO. Furthermore, the predicted longitudinal structure function is free of perturbative instability at small x, and the reduced cross-section shows a turnover at high y (absent in the NLO fit) consistent with the HERA data.
We present a detailed description of the Q^2 and x dependence of the structure functions F2 and FL as extracted from the Deep Inelastic Scattering data at HERA in the small Bjorken x region. Making use of a collinearly-improved BFKL equation at next-to-leading order and a treatment of the running of the coupling using non-Abelian physical renormalization together with the BLM scale choice allows us to reach low values of Q^2. We also provide some predictions for future lepton-hadron colliders.
A study of differential cross sections and azimuthal observables for semi-hard processes at LHC energies, including BFKL resummation effects, is presented. Particular attention has been paid to the behaviour of the azimuthal correlation momenta, when a couple of forward/backward jets or identified hadrons is produced in the final state with a large rapidity separation. Three- and four- jet production has been also considered, the main focus lying on the definition of new, generalized azimuthal observables, whose dependence on the transverse momenta and the rapidities of the central jet(s) can …
We calculate DIS-scheme splitting and coefficient functions for electromagnetic deep inelastic scattering with small x resummations, as given by the NLL BFKL equation with running coupling and approximate NLL resummed impact factors. The resummations are combined with a NLO fixed order expansion, and the improved quantities thus obtained are stable at small x and significantly suppressed with respect to LL results. These results are implemented in a global fit to DIS and related data, and the results compared to a NLO fixed order DIS-scheme fit and with a previous LL resummed fit. The NLL resu…
It has been observed recently that a consistent LO BFKL gluon evolution leads to a steep growth of F_2(x,Q^2) for x -> 0 almost independently of Q^2. We show that current data from the DESY HERA collider are precise enough to finally rule out a pure BFKL behaviour in the accessible small x region. Several attempts have been made by other groups to treat the BFKL type small x resummations instead as additions to the conventional anomalous dimensions of the successful renormalization group ``Altarelli-Parisi'' equations. We demonstrate that all presently available F_2 data, in particular at lowe…
Using the standard Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) approach, with partial inclusion of next-to-leading order effects, we propose the inclusive hadroproduction of a Higgs boson and of a jet, featuring large transverse momenta and well separated in rapidity, as a new channel to probe the BFKL dynamics. Predictions are presented for cross-sections and azimuthal angle correlations in different kinematics configurations for the final-state transverse momenta. We find that the large energy scales provided by the emission of a Higgs boson stabilize the BFKL series.
In this report, we give the Balitsky Fadin Kuraev Lipton formalism for jet gap jet events at hadronic colliders. We also discuss the case where in addition at least one proton is intact in the final state in diffractive events.
We discuss several methods of calculating the DIS structure functions F_2(x,Q^2) based on BFKL-type small x resummations. Taking into account new HERA data ranging down to small x and low Q^2, the pure leading order BFKL-based approach is excluded. Other methods based on high energy factorization are closer to conventional renormalization group equations. Despite several difficulties and ambiguities in combining the renormalization group equations with small x resummed terms, we find that a fit to the current data is hardly feasible, since the data in the low Q^2 region are not as steep as the…
The BFKL resummation at LL and NLL accuracy is briefly reviewed, with particular emphasis on the connection between the NLL corrections to the BFKL equation and exact NNLO calculations.
A truncated BFKL series is studied and applied to hadronic processes. The proton-(anti)proton cross sections are described with good agreement with data and in a way consistent with the unitarity bound. The elastic scattering amplitude is calculated at momentum transfer $t$ different from zero, introducing two distinct ansatze for the proton impact factor. The elastic differential cross section is obtained at small $t$ approximation and compared with the data.
We consider a `color density matrix' in gauge theory. We argue that it systematically resums large logarithms originating from wide-angle soft radiation, sometimes referred to as non-global logarithms, to all logarithmic orders. We calculate its anomalous dimension at leading- and next-to-leading order. Combined with a conformal transformation known to relate this problem to shockwave scattering in the Regge limit, this is used to rederive the next-to-leading order Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov equation (including its nonlinear generalization, the so-called Balitsky-JIMWLK equation), finding p…
I describe the underlying physics behind the BFKL resummation and discuss some of the recent ideas and results in this field. On the theoretical side I consider the formalism in the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) approximation and the interpretation of the large corrections. On the phenomenological side I discuss several experiments that attempt to observe the BFKL effects in the high energy limit.
We discuss the inclusion of running coupling effects in perturbative small x evolution equations. We show that a running coupling BFKL-like x-evolution equation is fully compatible, up to higher twist corrections, with the standard factorized perturbative evolution of parton distributions. We then use this result, combined with the well-known Airy asymptotics, to prove that the oscillations which are present in the running-coupling BFKL solution do not affect the associated splitting functions, which instead remain smooth in the small x limit. This allows us to give a prescription to include r…
As noticed by Fadin, Kuraev and Lipatov in 1975 incorporation of asymptotic freedom into the BFKL equation splits the QCD pomeron into a series of isolated poles in complex angular momentum plane. Following our earlier work on the proton structure function we explore the phenomenological consequences of the emerging BFKL-Regge factorized expansion for the small-$x$ structure function of the pion $F_{2π}(x,Q^2)$. We calculate $F_{2π}$ in a small-$x$ region and find good agreement with the recent H1 determination of $F_{2π}(x,Q^2)$. We also present the BFKL-Regge factorization based evaluation o…
We present results on dijet and W+dijet production at hadron colliders obtained by supplementing the leading log BFKL resummation with energy and momentum conservation. For pure dijet production, the inclusion of the BFKL radiation in the energy conservation leads to a decrease in the parton flux sufficient to counter-act the expected exponential increase in the cross section obtained for the partonic cross section. Other BFKL signatures such as the dijet azimuthal angle decorrelation do still survive.
We show that a resummation model for the evolution kernel at small x creates a bridge between the weak and strong couplings. The resummation model embodies DGLAP and BFKL anomalous dimensions at leading logarithmic orders, as well as a kinematical constraint on the real emission part of the kernel. In the case of pure gluodynamics the strong coupling limit of the Pomeron intercept is consistent with the exchange of the spin-two, colorless particle.
We describe different possibilities to probe the BFKL dynamics at hadronic colliders, namely Mueller-Navelet jet, and jet gap jet events. We also discuss briefly the jet veto measurement as performed by the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC.

We study in the BFKL approach the total hadronic cross section for the collision of two virtual photons for energies in the range of LEP2 and of future linear colliders. The BFKL resummation is done at the next-to-leading order in the BFKL Green's function; photon impact factors are taken instead at the leading order, but with the inclusion of the subleading terms required by invariance under changes of the renormalization scale and of the BFKL scale $s_0$. We compare our results with previous estimations based on a similar kind of approximation.
A study of cross sections and azimuthal correlation moments for the inclusive production of two, light charged hadrons featuring large transverse momenta and well separated in rapidity at LHC energies, including BFKL resummation effects with NLA accuracy, is presented. This reaction shares the same theoretical setup with the well konwn Mueller-Navelet jet production and can be thought of as a new and complementary channel to access the BFKL dynamics at proton colliders.
Virtual photon scattering in $e^+e^-$ collisions can result in events with the electron-positron pair produced at large rapidity separation in association with hadrons. The BFKL equation resums large logarithms that dominate the cross section for this process. After a brief overview of analytic BFKL resummation and its experimental status, we report on a Monte Carlo method for solving the BFKL equation that allows kinematic constraints to be taken into account. We discuss results for $e^+e^-$ collisions using both fixed-order QCD and the BFKL approach. We conclude with some brief comments on t…
Studying semi-hard processes in the large center-of-mass energy limit gives us an opportunity to further test perturbative QCD in an unexplored kinematical configuration, contributing to a better understanding of the dynamics of strong interactions. For semi-hard reactions in kinematics at large center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$, the BFKL resummation of energy logarithms comes into play, since large energy logarithms compensate the smallness of QCD coupling $α_s$ and must therefore be accounted for to all perturbative orders. Tracing the path toward performing precision calculations via BFKL re…
A study of the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at 13 TeV LHC is presented, including BFKL resummation effects and investigating three different variants of the BLM scale optimization method. It is shown how the cross section and the azimuthal observables are affected by the exclusion of the events where, for a given rapidity interval between the two jets, one of these is produced in the central region.
We show that the inclusion of parton density effects in the perturbative small-x evolution reduces the strength of the powerlike growth of total hadronic cross sections.
Recent concerns about the very large next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) corrections to the BFKL equation are addressed by the introduction of a physical rapidity-separation parameter $Δ$. At the leading logarithm (LL) this parameter enforces the constraint that successive emitted gluons have a minimum separation in rapidity, $y_{i+1}-y_i>Δ$. The most significant effect is to reduce the BFKL Pomeron intercept from the standard result as $Δ$ is increased from 0 (standard BFKL). At NLL this $Δ$-dependence is compensated by a modification of the BFKL kernel, such that the total dependence on $Δ$ is…
We present a determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton in which NLO and NNLO fixed-order calculations are supplemented by NLLx small-x resummation. Deep inelastic structure functions are computed consistently at NLO+NLLx or NNLO+NLLx, while for hadronic processes small-x resummation is included only in the PDF evolution, with kinematic cuts introduced to ensure the fitted data lie in a region where the fixed-order calculation of the hard cross-sections is reliable. In all other respects, the fits use the same methodology and are based on the same global dataset as the re…
We compute the effects of soft gluon resummation for the production of high mass systems in hadronic collisions. We carefully analyse the growth of the perturbative expansion coefficients of the resummation formula. We propose an expression consistent with the known leading and next-to-leading resummation results, in which the coefficients grow much less than factorially. We apply our formula to Drell--Yan pair production, heavy flavour production, and the production of high invariant mass jet pairs in hadronic collisions. We find that, with our formula, resummation effects become important on…
We present our predictions for the inclusive production of two heavy quark-antiquark pairs, separated by a large rapidity interval, in the collision of (quasi-)real photons at the energies of LEP2 and of some future electron-positron colliders. We include in our calculation the full resummation of leading logarithms in the center-of-mass energy and a partial resummation of the next-to-leading logarithms, within the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) approach.
We propose to study at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) the inclusive production of a pair of hadrons (a "di-hadron" system) in a kinematics where two detected hadrons with high transverse momenta are separated by a large interval of rapidity. This process has much in common with the widely discussed Mueller-Navelet jet production and can also be used to access the dynamics of hard proton-parton interactions in the Regge limit. For both processes large contributions enhanced by logarithms of energy can be resummed in perturbation theory within the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) formalism …
In this lecture the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to the QCD Pomeron intercept obtained from the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation are discussed. It is shown that the BFKL Pomeron intercept when evaluated in non-Abelian physical renormalization schemes with Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) optimal scale setting does not exhibit the serious problems encountered in the modified minimal subtraction (bar{MS}) scheme. The results obtained provide an opportunity for applications of the NLO BFKL resummation to high-energy phenomenology. One of such applications for virtual gamma-g…
We consider the resummation of soft-gluon emission in the transverse-momentum distribution of vector mesons in hadronic collisions. We find that the resummed expression in the impact-parameter formulation has an expansion in $\as$ with factorially growing terms with oscillating signs. These diverging terms arise from the small impact-parameter region of integration, and are of a subleading nature. We also obtain a closed expression for the next-to-leading logarithm resummation in $\qt$-space, and we study its analytic structure. We find in this case that, although no factorially growing terms …
We review the basic concepts of all-order calculations in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and their application to collider phenomenology. We start by discussing the factorization properties of QCD amplitudes and cross-sections in the soft and collinear limits and their resulting all-order exponentiation. We then discuss several applications of this formalism to observables which are of great interest at particle colliders. In this context, we describe the all-order resummation of event-shape distributions, as well as observables that probe the internal structure of hadronic jets.
We investigate the stability under variation of the renormalization, factorization and energy scales entering the calculation of the cross section, at next-to-leading order in the BFKL formalism, for the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at the Large Hadron Collider, following the experimental cuts on the tagged jets. To find optimal values for the scales involved in this observable it is possible to look for regions of minimal sensitivity to their variation. We show that the scales found with this logic are more natural, in the sense of being more similar to the squared transverse momenta of…
I discuss the motivation for resummation of the effects of initial-state soft gluon radiation, to all orders in the strong coupling strength, for processes in which the near-threshold region in the partonic subenergy is important. I summarize the method of "perturbative resummation" and its application to the calculation of the total cross section for top quark production at hadron colliders. Comments are included on the differences between the treatment of subleading logarithmic terms in this method and in other approaches.
Mueller Navelet jets were proposed more than 25 years ago as a decisive test of BFKL dynamics at hadron colliders. We here present a complete next-to-leading BFKL study of the azimuthal decorrelation of these jets. This includes both next-to-leading corrections to the Green's function and next-to-leading corrections to the jet vertices. We compare our results with recent data taken at the LHC and results obtained in a fixed order next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation.
We discuss the inclusive cross section to produce two minijets with a large separation in rapidity in high energy hadronic collisions. The contribution to the inclusive cross section from the exchange of a BFKL Pomeron is compared with the contribution from the exchange of two BFKL Pomerons, which is induced by the unitarization of the semi-hard interaction. The effect of the multiple exchange is studied both as a function of the azimuthal correlation and as a function of the transverse momentum of the observed minijets.
We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections relevant for di-hadron production in hadronic collisions, H1 H2 -> h1 h2 X, at high invariant mass of the produced hadron pair. These corrections arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction and are associated with soft-gluon emission. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and show how to incorporate consistently cuts in rapidity and transverse momentum of the observed particles. We present numerical results for fixed-target and ISR regimes and find enhancem…
We study the transverse momentum resummation for dijet correlation in hadron collisions based on the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism. The complete one-loop calculations are carried out in the collinear factorization framework for the differential cross sections at low imbalance transverse momentum between the two jets. Important cross checks are performed to demonstrate that the soft divergences cancelled out between different diagrams, and in particular, those associated with final state jets. The leading and sub-leading logarithms are identified. All order resummation is derived following th…
We parameterize the enhancement of threshold effects away from hadronic endpoint that arise due to the steeply falling nature of parton distribution functions, within the context of soft-collinear effective theory. This is accomplished in a process-independent way by directly linking the charac- teristic scale of soft and collinear radiation, λ, to the shape of the pdfs. This allows us quantify the power corrections to partonic threshold resummation as a function of the invariant mass and rapidity of the final state. In the context of SCET, being able to compute λin a process-independent manne…
We investigate the effects of the saturation boundary on small-x evolution at the next-to-leading order accuracy and beyond. We demonstrate that the instabilities of the next-to-leading order BFKL evolution are not cured by the presence of the nonlinear saturation effects, and a resummation of the higher order corrections is therefore needed for the nonlinear evolution. The renormalization group improved resummed equation in the presence of the saturation boundary is investigated, and the corresponding saturation scale is extracted. A significant reduction of the saturation scale is found, and…
We discuss a model for soft gluon re-summation based on a statistical description of independent emissions during inelastic collisions. The model is applied to estimate Survival Probabilities at the LHC. A comparison with other models and experimental data is presented.
The inclusive hadroproduction of two heavy quarks, featuring a large separation in rapidity, is proposed as a novel probe channel of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) approach. In a theoretical setup which includes full resummation of leading logarithms in the center-of-mass energy and partial resummation of the next-to-leading ones, predictions for the cross section and azimuthal coefficients are presented for kinematic configurations typical of current and possible future experimental analyses at the LHC.
We calculate several differential cross sections for Z0 and high-pT jet production in the forward rapidity region at the LHC using the hybrid High Energy Factorization. We test various unintegrated gluon distributions involving subleading BFKL effects (such as kinematic constraint, running strong coupling and DGLAP correction) and compare the results with experimental data obtained by the LHCb experiment. We find that the hard scale dependence of unintegrated gluon distributions, which effectively resums the Sudakov-type logarithms on the top of the resummation of the small x logarithms, is es…
We present a small x resummation for the GLAP anomalous dimension and its corresponding dual BFKL kernel, which includes all the available perturbative information and nonperturbative constraints. Specifically, it includes all the information coming from next-to-leading order GLAP anomalous dimensions and BFKL kernels, from the constraints of momentum conservation, from renormalization-group improvement of the running coupling and from gluon interchange symmetry. The ensuing evolution kernel has a uniformly stable perturbative expansion. It is very close to the unresummed NLO GLAP kernel in mo…
Virtual photon scattering in e^+e^- collisions can result in events with the electron-positron pair at large rapidity separation with hadronic activity in between. The BFKL equation resums large logarithms that dominate the cross section for this process. We report here on a Monte Carlo method for solving the BFKL equation that allows kinematic constraints to be taken into account. The application to e^+e^- collisions is in progress.
We study, within QCD collinear factorization and including BFKL resummation at the next-to-leading order, the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at LHC with center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The adopted jet vertices are calculated in the approximation of small aperture of the jet cone in the pseudorapidity-azimuthal angle plane. We consider several representations of the dijet cross section, differing only beyond the next-to-leading order, to calculate a few observables related with this process. We use various methods of optimization to fix the energy scales entering the perturbative calculatio…
The measurement of azimuthal correlations of Mueller-Navelet jets is generally considered as a decisive test to reveal the effect of BFKL dynamics at hadron colliders. The first experimental study of these correlations at the LHC has been recently performed by the CMS collaboration. We show that the ratios of cosine moments of the azimuthal distribution are successfully described within our next-to-leading logarithmic BFKL treatment. The whole set of CMS data for the azimuthal correlations can also be consistently described provided that one uses a larger renormalization/factorization scale th…
In this thesis, we develop resummation algorithms suitable for perturbative QCD. In the first part, we propose a resummation technique applicable to the Regge limit. We develop a new systematic procedure for this limit in perturbative QCD to arbitrary logarithmic order. The formalism relies on the IR structure and the gauge symmetry of the theory. Using a factorization procedure introduced by Sen, we derive a sum of convolutions in transverse momentum space over soft and jet functions, which approximate the amplitude up to power-suppressed corrections. A set of evolution equations generalizing…
