We study two-component (or pseudospin-1/2) bosons with pair hopping interactions in synthetic dimension, for which a feasible experimental scheme on a square optical lattice is also presented. Previous studies have shown that two-component bosons with on-site interspecies interaction can only generate nontrivial interspecies paired superfluid (super-counter-fluidity or pair-superfluid) state. In contrast, apart from interspecies paired superfluid, we reveal two new phases by considering this additional pair hopping interaction. These novel phases are intraspecies paired superfluid (molecular superfluid) and an exotic non-integer Mott insulator which shows a non-integer atom number at each site for each species, but an integer for total atom number.
In this letter we consider spinless bosons in a Kagome lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and on-site interaction, and the sign of hopping is inverted by insetting a π flux in each triangle of Kagome lattice so that the lowest single particle band is perfectly flat. We show that in the high density limit, despite of the infinite degeneracy of the single particle ground states, interaction will select out the Bloch state at the K point of Brillouin zone for boson condensation at the lowest temperature. As temperature increases, the single boson superfluid order can be easily destroyed, while…
We consider two species of hard-core bosons with density dependent hopping in a one-dimensional optical lattice, for which we propose experimental realizations using time-periodic driving. The quantum phase diagram for half-integer filling is determined by combining different advanced numerical simulations with analytic calculations. We find that a reduction of the density-dependent hopping induces a Mott-insulator to superfluid transition. For negative hopping a previously unknown state is found, where one species induces a gauge phase of the other species, which leads to a superfluid phase o…
We systematically study the ground-state phase diagrams and the demixing effect of a two-dimensional two-component bosonic system with pair hopping in synthetic dimension by using the cluster Gutzwiller mean-field method. Our results show that when the interexchange symmetry between the two species is broken, the regions of the super-counter-fluidity state in the phase diagram are dramatically shrunk whenever the on-site pair hopping term is turned on or off. Unexpectedly, the non-integer Mott phase and the molecular superfluid phase predicted in our previous work \citetext{Z. Lin et al., \tex…
We investigate the ground state and quantum dynamics of an interacting bosonic chain with the nonreciprocal hopping. In sharp contrast to its Hermitian counterpart, the ground state can support Mott insulators in systems with noninteger filling due to the competition between nonreciprocal hopping and the on-site interaction. For the quantum dynamics, conservation laws for non-Hermitian systems manifest a stark difference from their Hermitian counterpart. In particular, for any Hermitian operator that commutes with the Hamiltonian operator, its expectation value is guaranteed to be nonconserved…
We apply the bosonization technique to derive the phase diagram of a balanced unit density two-component dipolar Fermi gas in a one dimensional lattice geometry. The considered interaction processes are of the usual contact and dipolar long-range density-density type together with peculiar correlated hopping terms which can be generated dynamically. Rigorous bounds for the transition lines are obtained in the weak coupling regime. In addition to the standard bosonization description, we derive the low energy phase diagram taking place when part of the interaction is embodied non-perturbatively…
We study the interacting bosons in topological Hofstadter bands with Chern number two. Using exact diagonalization, we demonstrate that bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state emerges at integer boson filling factor $ν=1$ of the lowest Chern band with evidences including a robust spectrum gap and quantized topological Hall conductance two. Moreover, the robustness of BIQH state against different interactions and next-nearest neighbor hopping is investigated. The strong nearest neighbor interaction would favor a charge density wave. When the onsite interaction decreases, BIQH state undergoes …
Phase transitions in systems described by Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model on a lattice with two nonequivalent sublattices are investigated in this work. The case of hard-core bosons is considered and pseudospin formalism is used. Phase diagrams are built in the plain of chemical potential of the bosons-bosonic hopping parameter. It is shown that in the case of anisotropic hopping, the region of the supersolid phase existence is possible for a smaller parameter space.
We study a system of hardcore boson on a one-dimensional lattice with frustrated next-nearest neighbor hopping and nearest neighbor interaction. At half filling, for equal magnitude of nearest and next-nearest neighbor hopping, the ground state of this system exhibits a first order phase transition from a Bond-Ordered (BO) solid to a Charge-Density-Wave(CDW) solid as a function of the nearest neighbor interaction. Moving away from half filling we investigate the system at incommensurate densities, where we find a SuperSolid (SS) phase which has concurrent off-diagonal long range order and dens…
Motivated by recent experiments with ultracold magnetic atoms trapped in optical lattices where the orientation of atomic dipoles can be fully controlled by external fields, we study the ground state properties of dipolar bosons trapped in a two-dimensional lattice with density-induced hopping and where the dipoles are tilted along the $xz$ plane. We present ground state phase diagrams of the above system at different tilt angles. We find that, as the dipolar interaction increases, the superfluid phase at half filling factor is destroyed in favor of either a checkerboard or stripe solid phase …
We present a theoretical study of the effects of the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping ($t_2$) on the properties of non-interacting bosons in optical lattices in the presence of an Aubry-André quasi-disorder. First we investigate, employing exact diagonalization, the effects of $t_2$ on the localization properties of a single boson. The localization is monitored using an entanglement measure as well as with inverse participation ratio. We find that the sign of $t_2$ has a significant influence on the localization effects. We also provide analytical results in support of the trends found in t…
Bosonic lattice systems with non-trivial interactions represent an intriguing platform to study exotic phases of matter. Here, we study the effects of extended correlated hopping processes in a system of bosons trapped in a lattice geometry. The interplay between single particle tunneling terms, correlated hopping processes and on-site repulsion is studied by means of a combination of exact diagonalization, strong coupling expansion and cluster mean field theory. We identify a rich ground state phase diagram where, apart the usual Mott and superfluid states, superfluid phases with interesting …
We consider the extended hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on a Kagome lattice with boundary conditions on two edges. We find that the sharp edges lift the degeneracy and freeze the system into a striped order at 1/3 and 2/3 filling for zero hopping. At small hopping strengths, holes spontaneously appear and separate into fractional charges which move to the edges of the system. This leads to a novel edge liquid phase, which is characterized by fractional charges near the edges and a finite edge compressibility but no superfluid density. The compressibility is due to excitations on the edge which d…
The $t$-$J$ model is a standard model of strongly correlated electrons, often studied in the context of high-$T_c$ superconductivity. However, most studies of this model neglect three-site terms, which appear at the same order as the superexchange $J$. As these terms correspond to pair-hopping, they are expected to play an important role in the physics of superconductivity when doped sufficiently far from half-filling. In this paper we present a density matrix renormalisation group study of the one-dimensional $t$-$J$ model with the pair hopping terms included. We demonstrate that that these a…
We study two-component (or pseudo-spin-1/2) Bose or Fermi gases in one dimension, in which particles are convertible between the components. Through bosonization and numerical analyses of a simple lattice model, we demonstrate that, in such gases, a strong intercomponent repulsion induces spontaneous population imbalance between the components, namely, the ferromagnetism of the pseudo spins. The imbalanced phase contains gapless charge excitations characterized as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and gapped spin excitations. We uncover a crucial effect of the intercomponent particle hopping on the …
We study numerically the dynamics of bosons on a triangular lattice after quenching both the on-site interactions and the external trapping potential to negative values. In a similar situation on the square lattice, the dynamics can be understood in terms of an effectively reversed Hamiltonian. On the triangular lattice, however, the kinetic part of the reversed Hamiltonian is frustrated and whether coherence can develop is an open question. The strength of the frustration can be changed by tuning the ratio of the hopping rates along different directions. We calculate time-of-flight images at …
Hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice with nearest neighbor repulsion are a prototypical example of a system with supersolid behavior on a lattice. We show that in this model the physical origin of the supersolid phase can be understood quantitatively and analytically by constructing quasiparticle excitations of defects that are moving on an ordered background. The location of the solid to supersolid phase transition line is predicted from the effective model for both positive and negative (frustrated) hopping parameters. For positive hopping parameters the calculations agree very accuratel…
We investigate the structure of the spectrum of antiferromagnetically coupled spin-1 bosons on a square lattice using degenerate perturbation theory and exact diagonalizations of finite clusters. We show that the superfluid phase develops an Anderson tower of states typical of nematic long-range order with broken SU(2) symmetry. We further show that this order persists into the Mott insulating phase down to zero hopping for one boson per site, and down to a critical hopping for two bosons per site, in agreement with mean-field and Quantum Monte Carlo results. The connection with the transition …
We study a simple model of interacting bosons on a d-dimensional cubic lattice whose dynamics conserves both total boson number and total boson dipole moment. This model provides a simple framework in which several remarkable consequences of dipole conservation can be explored. As a function of chemical potential and hopping strength, the model can be tuned between gapped Mott insulating phases and various types of gapless condensates. The condensed phase realized at large hopping strengths, which we dub a Bose-Einstein insulator, is particularly interesting: despite having a Bose condensate, …
We experimentally realize a Peierls phase in the hopping amplitude of excitations carried by Rydberg atoms, and observe the resulting characteristic chiral motion in a minimal setup of three sites. Our demonstration relies on the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling of the dipolar exchange interaction combined with time-reversal symmetry breaking by a homogeneous external magnetic field. Remarkably, the phase of the hopping amplitude between two sites strongly depends on the occupancy of the third site, thus leading to a correlated hopping associated to a density-dependent Peierls phase. We experimen…
We consider a minimal model to investigate the quantum phases of hardcore, polarized dipolar atoms confined in multilayer optical lattices. The model is a variant of the extended Bose-Hubbard model, which incorporates intralayer repulsion and interlayer attraction between the atoms in nearest-neighbour sites. We study the phases of this model emerging from the competition between the attractive interlayer interaction and the interlayer hopping. Our results from the analytical and cluster-Gutzwiller mean-field theories reveal that multimer formation occurs in the regime of weak intra and interl…
We study the effects of assisted tunneling or correlated hopping between next nearest neighbours in a two species Bose-Hubbard system. The system is the bosonic analong of the fermionic system studied in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 116}, 225303 (2016). Using a combination of cluster mean field theory, exact diagonlization and analytical results, a rich phase diagram is determined including a pair superfluid phase as well as a superfluid quantum droplet phase. The former is the result of the interplay between single particle and correlated hopping, while the latter is the effect of large correlated h…
We systematically study an extended Bose-Hubbard model with atom hopping and atom-pair hopping in the presence of a three-body constraint on the triangular lattice. By means of large-scale Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, the ground-state phase diagram are studied. We find a continuous transition between the atomic superfluid phase and the pair superfluid when the ratio of the atomic hopping and the atom-pair hopping is adapted. We then focus on the interplay among the atom-pair hopping, the on-site repulsion and the nearest-neighbor repulsion. With on-site repulsion present, we observe first …
We study two many-body systems of bosons interacting via an infinite three-body contact repulsion in a lattice: a pairs quasi-condensate induced by correlated hopping and the discrete version of the Pfaffian wavefunction. We propose to experimentally realise systems characterized by such interaction by means of a proper spin-1 lattice Hamiltonian: spin degrees of freedom are locally mapped into occupation numbers of emerging bosons, in a fashion similar to spin-1/2 and hardcore bosons. Such a system can be realized with ultracold spin-1 atoms in a Mott Insulator with filling-factor one. The hi…
We study the Mott phases and the superfluid-insulator transition of two-component ultracold bosons on a square optical lattice in the presence of a non-Abelian synthetic gauge field, which renders a SU(2) hopping matrix for the bosons. Using a resummed hopping expansion, we calculate the excitation spectra in the Mott insulating phases and demonstrate that the superfluid-insulator phase boundary displays a non-monotonic dependence on the gauge field strength. We also compute the momentum distribution of the bosons in the presence of the non-Abelian field and show that they develop peaks at non…
One dimensional free-fermions and hard-core bosons are often considered to be equivalent. Indeed, when restricted to nearest-neighbor hopping on a chain the particles cannot exchange themselves, and therefore hardly experience their own statistics. Apart from the off-diagonal correlations which depends on the so-called Jordan-Wigner string, real-space observables are similar for free-fermions and hard-core bosons on a chain. Interestingly, by coupling only two chains, thus forming a two-leg ladder, particle exchange becomes allowed, and leads to a totally different physics between free-fermion…
We consider $N$ interacting dipolar bosonic atoms at zero temperature in a double-well potential. This system is described by the two-space-mode extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) Hamiltonian which includes (in addition to the familiar BH terms) the nearest-neighbor interaction, correlated hopping and bosonic-pair hopping. For systems with $N=2$ and $N=3$ particles we calculate analytically both the ground state and the Fisher information, the coherence visibility, and the entanglement entropy that characterize the correlations of the lowest energy state. The structure of the ground state crucially d…
Recent experiments revealed the importance of higher-band effects for the Mott insulator (MI) -- superfluid transition (SF) of ultracold bosonic atoms or mixtures of bosons and fermions in deep optical lattices [Best \emph{et al.}, PRL \textbf{102}, 030408 (2009); Will \emph{et al.}, Nature \textbf{465}, 197 (2010)]. In the present work, we derive an effective lowest-band Hamiltonian in 3D that generalizes the standard Bose-Fermi Hubbard model taking these effects as well as nonlinear corrections of the tunneling amplitudes mediated by interspecies interactions into account. It is shown that a…
We study a system of hard-core bosons at half-filling in a one-dimensional optical superlattice. The bosons are allowed to hop to nearest and next-nearest neighbor sites producing a zig-zag geometry and we obtain the ground state phase diagram as a function of microscopic parameters using the finite-size density matrix renormalization group (FS-DMRG) method. Depending on the sign of the next-nearest neighbor hopping and the strength of the superlattice potential the system exhibits three different phases, namely the bond-order (BO) solid, the superlattice induced Mott insulator (SLMI) and the …
Kinetic energy driven phase transitions in Bose superfluids occur at low values of the repulsion when the values of the next-to-nearest and next-to-next-to-nearest hopping term attain certain critical values, resulting in alterations in the wave vector of the condensate. We map out the space of possible phases allowed by particular forms of the single-particle energy dispersion in the superfluid state, noting the appearance of a new phase, and examine in more detail the effects of additional repulsive terms on the form of the condensate wavefunction. We also examine the effect of these additio…
Experimental realizations of disorder in optical lattices generate a distribution of the Bose-Hubbard (BH) parameters, like on-site potentials, hopping strengths, and interaction energies. We analyze this distribution for bosons in a bichromatic quasi-periodic potential by determining the generalized Wannier functions and calculating the corresponding BH parameters. Using a local mean-field cluster analysis, we study the effect of the corresponding disorder on the phase diagrams. We find a substantial amount of disorder in the hopping strengths, which produces strong deviations from the phase …
We study the Mott phase of three-component bosons, with one particle per site, in an optical lattice by mapping it onto an SU(3) spin model. In the simplest case of full SU(3) symmetry, one obtains a ferromagnetic Heisenberg model. Introducing an SU(3) analog of spin-orbit coupling, additional spin-spin interactions are generated. We first consider the scenario of spin-dependent hopping phases, leading to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-type interactions. They result in the formation of spiral spin textures, which in one dimension can be understood by a local unitary transformation. Applying classical M…
We study the ground state properties of dipolar bosons in a one dimensional dimerized optical lattice. In the limit of strong onsite repulsion i.e. hardcore bosons, and strong dipole-dipole interaction, a stable density wave (DW) phase is obtained at half filling as a function of lattice dimerization. Interestingly, at quarter filling we obtain the signatures of an insulating phase which has both the character the bond-order (BO) and the DW insulators which we call a bond-order density wave (BODW) phase. Moreover, we show that for a fixed hopping dimerization there occurs a BO-DW phase crossov…
A density-dependent gauge field may induce density-induced geometric frustration, leading to a non-trivial interplay between density modulation and frustration, which we illustrate for the particular case of ultra-cold bosons in zig-zag optical lattices with a density-dependent hopping. We show that the density-induced frustration leads in a rich landscape of quantum phases, including Mott and bond-order insulators, two-component superfluids, chiral superfluids, and partially-paired superfluids. We show as well that the density-dependent hopping results in an effective repulsive or attractive …
We study the dynamics in a one dimensional hard-core Bose gas with power-law hopping after an abrupt reduction of the hopping range using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (t-DMRG) and bosonization techniques. In particular, we focus on the destruction of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), which is present in the initial state in the thermodynamic limit. We argue that this type of quench is akin to a sudden reduction in the effective dimensionality $d$ of the system (from $d > 1$ to $d = 1$). We identify two regimes in the evolution of the BEC fraction. For short times t…
The phase diagram of a half-filled hard core boson two-leg ladder in a flux is investigated by means of numerical simulations based on the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm and bosonization. We calculate experimentally accessible observables such as the momentum distribution, as well as rung current, density wave and bond-order wave correlation functions, allowing us to identify the Mott Meissner and Mott Vortex states. We follow the transition from commensurate Meissner to incommensurate Vortex state at increasing interchain hopping till the critical value [Piraud et al. P…
We show how dipolar interactions between dysprosium atoms in an optical lattice can be used to obtain fractional quantum Hall states. In our approach, dysprosium atoms are trapped one atom per site in a deep optical lattice with negligible tunneling. Microwave and spatially dependent optical dressing fields are used to define an effective spin-1/2 or spin-1 degree of freedom in each atom. Thinking of spin-1/2 particles as hardcore bosons, dipole-dipole interactions give rise to boson hopping, topological flat bands with Chern number 1, and the ν= 1/2 Laughlin state. Thinking of spin-1 particle…
We study the sampling complexity of a probability distribution associated with an ensemble ofidentical noninteracting bosons undergoing a quantum random walk on a one-dimensional lattice. With uniform nearest-neighbor hopping we show that one can efficiently sample the distribution fortimes logarithmic in the size of the system, while for longer times there is no known efficient samplingalgorithm. With time-dependent hopping and optimal control, we design the time evolution toapproximate an arbitrary Haar-random unitary map analogous to that designed for photons in alinear optical network. This…
The Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian describes the competition between superfluidity and Mott insulating behavior at zero temperature and commensurate filling as the strength of the on-site repulsion is varied. Gapped insulating phases also occur at non-integer densities as a consequence of longer ranged repulsive interactions. In this paper we explore the formation of gapped phases in coupled chains due instead to anisotropies $t_x \neq t_y$ in the bosonic hopping, extending the work of Crepin {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B 84, 054517 (2011)] on two coupled chains, where a gap was shown to occur at half …
We study the mutually coupled, strongly interacting bosonic and non-interacting fermionic, species of unequal masses in the regime were the retardation effects are an important part of the physics. A cloud of neutral atoms experiences a synthetic magnetic field because of a vector potential that imposes a phase shift on the constituents. The magnetic field causes the oscillations of the magnitude and sign of the effective interaction between bosons from repulsive to attractive in contrast to the static case. We show that the dynamics for the gaseous Bose-Fermi mixtures when reaching the quantu…
Magneto-transport of hard core bosons (HCB) is studied using an XXZ quantum spin model representation, appropriately gauged on the torus to allow for an external magnetic field. We find strong lattice effects near half filling. An effective quantum mechanical description of the vortex degrees of freedom is derived. Using semiclassical and numerical analysis we compute the vortex hopping energy, which at half filling is close to magnitude of the boson hopping energy. The critical quantum melting density of the vortex lattice is estimated at 6.5x10-5 vortices per unit cell. The Hall conductance …
We investigate the phase diagrams of theoretical models describing bosonic atoms in a lattice in the presence of randomly localized impurities. By including multiband and nonlinear hopping effects we enrich the standard model containing only the chemical-potential disorder with the site-dependent hopping term. We compare the extension of the MI and the BG phase in both models using a combination of the local mean-field method and a Hartree-Fock-like procedure, as well as, the Gutzwiller-ansatz approach. We show analytical argument for the presence of triple points in the phase diagram of the m…
Inter-site dipolar interactions induce, even in absence of disorder, an intriguing non-ergodic dynamics for dipolar bosons in an optical lattice. We show that the inherent dipole-induced density-dependent tunneling, typically neglected, plays a crucial role in this dynamics. For shallow-enough lattices, the delocalization stemming from the interaction-induced hopping overcomes the localization induced by inter-site interactions. As a result, in stark contrast to the more studied case of hard-core bosons, delocalization is counter-intuitively strengthen when the dipolar strength increases. Furt…
We study the quantum ground state of ultracold bosons in a two-dimensional square lattice. The bosons interact via the repulsive dipolar interactions and s-wave scattering. The dynamics is described by the extended Bose-Hubbard model including correlated hopping due to the dipolar interactions, the coefficients are found from the second quantized Hamiltonian using the Wannier expansion with realistic parameters. We determine the phase diagram using the Gutzwiller ansatz in the regime where the coefficients of the correlated hopping terms are negative and can interfere with the tunneling due to…
We consider interacting bosons in a 2D square and a 3D cubic optical lattice with a periodic modulation of the s-wave scattering length. At first we map the underlying periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model for large enough driving frequencies approximately to an effective time-independent Hamiltonian with a conditional hopping. Combining different analytical approaches with quantum Monte Carlo simulations then reveals that the superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition still exists despite the periodic driving and that the location of the quantum phase boundary turns out to depend qui…
We investigate the ground state properties of Bose-Bose mixtures with Rashba-type spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a square lattice. The system displays rich physics from the deep Mott-insulator (MI) all the way to the superfluid (SF) regime. In the deep MI regime, novel spin-ordered phases arise due to the effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type super-exchange interactions. By employing the non-perturbative Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field-Theory (BDMFT), we numerically study and establish the stability of these magnetic phases against increasing hopping amplitude. We show that as hopping is increased ac…
We propose an experimental realization of the time-periodically modulated Rabi frequency and suggest density-dependent hoppings of two species hardcore bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Distinct from the previous work [Phys. Rev. Research {\bf 2}, 013275 (2020)], we study effects in the first resonance region. In the effective Hamiltonian, the intra-species hopping occurs only if the density discrepancy of the other species on these sites is zero, while the inter-species one is allowed once the relevant density discrepancy becomes nonzero. At integer-$1$ filling, the quantum phase d…
