Quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles have a limited quantity of embedded energy. To preserve and guaranty the success of the UAV mission, we should manage energy consumption during the mission. In this study we introduce an optimization algorithm to minimize the consumed energy in quadrotor mission under windy conditions. The mechanical energy consumed by rotors of the flying vehicle is formulated with an efficiency function. Then, we formulate the energy minimization problem as an optimal control problem. The last problem is solved in order to calculate minimum energy for quadrotor simple mission under windy conditions. In simulation experiment, we compare the proposed method with an adaptive control approach.

It is ubiquitously accepted that during the autonomous navigation of the quadrotors, one of the most widely adopted unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), safety always has the highest priority. However, it is observed that the ego airflow disturbance can be a significant adverse factor during flights, causing potential safety issues, especially in narrow and confined indoor environments. Therefore, we propose a novel method to estimate and adapt indoor ego airflow disturbance of quadrotors, meanwhile applying it to trajectory planning. Firstly, the hover experiments for different quadrotors are con…

Quadrotors are agile platforms. With human experts, they can perform extremely high-speed flights in cluttered environments. However, fully autonomous flight at high speed remains a significant challenge. In this work, we propose a motion planning algorithm based on the corridor-constrained minimum control effort trajectory optimization (MINCO) framework. Specifically, we use a series of overlapping spheres to represent the free space of the environment and propose two novel designs that enable the algorithm to plan high-speed quadrotor trajectories in real-time. One is a sampling-based corrid…
Manipulation and grasping with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) currently require accurate positioning and are often executed at reduced speed to ensure successful grasps. This is due to the fact that typical UAVs can only accommodate rigid manipulators with few degrees of freedom, which limits their capability to compensate for disturbances caused by the vehicle positioning errors. Moreover, UAVs have to minimize external contact forces in order to maintain stability. Biological systems, on the other hand, exploit softness to overcome similar limitations, and leverage compliance to enable aggr…

The recent works on quadrotor have focused on more and more challenging tasks on increasingly complex systems. Systems are often augmented with slung loads, inverted pendulums or arms, and accomplish complex tasks such as going through a window, grasping, throwing or catching. Usually, controllers are designed to accomplish a specific task on a specific system using analytic solutions, so each application needs long preparations. On the other hand, the direct multiple shooting approach is able to solve complex problems without any analytic development, by using on-the-shelf optimization solver…

Today, low-altitude fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are largely limited to primitively follow user-defined waypoints. To allow fully-autonomous remote missions in complex environments, real-time environment-aware navigation is required both with respect to terrain and strong wind drafts. This paper presents two relevant initial contributions: First, the literature's first-ever 3D wind field prediction method which can run in real time onboard a UAV is presented. The approach retrieves low-resolution global weather data, and uses potential flow theory to adjust the wind field such th…

This paper presents an approach for defining Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) missions on a high level. Current methods for UAV mission specification are evaluated and their deficiencies are analyzed. From these findings, a new graphical specification language for UAV missions is proposed, which is targeted towards typical UAV users from various domains rather than computer science experts. The research is ongoing, but a first prototype is presented.

This paper considers optimal control of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) using the discrete-time, finite-horizon, linear quadratic regulator (LQR). The state of a quadrotor UAV is represented as an element of the matrix Lie group of double direct isometries, $SE_2(3)$. The nonlinear system is linearized using a left-invariant error about a reference trajectory, leading to an optimal gain sequence that can be calculated offline. The reference trajectory is calculated using the differentially flat properties of the quadrotor. Monte-Carlo simulations demonstrate robustness of the propos…
This paper focuses on the control of a cooperative system composed of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) manipulating an object. The two units are subject to input saturations and collaborate to move the object to a desired pose characterized by its position and inclination. The dynamics are derived using Euler-Lagrange method. A pre-stabilizing control law is proposed where the UGV is tasked to deploy the object to a certain position whereas the UAV adjusts its inclination. In particular, a proportional-derivative control law is proposed for the UGV, and a c…
As the market for commercially available unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) booms, there is an increasing number of small, teleoperated or autonomous aircraft found in protected or sensitive airspace. Existing solutions for removal of these aircraft are either military-grade and too disruptive for domestic use, or compose of cumbersomely teleoperated counter-UAV vehicles that have proven ineffective in high-profile domestic cases. In this work, we examine the use of a quadrotor for autonomously targeting semi-stationary and moving aerial objects with little or no prior knowledge of the target's f…

In this paper, we develop a functional Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), capable of tracking an object using a Machine Learning-like vision system called Haar feature-based cascade classifier. The image processing is made on-board with a high processor single-board computer. Based on the detected object and its position, the quadrotor must track it in order to be in a centered position and in a safe distance to it. The object in question is a human face; the experiments were conducted in a two-step detection, searching first for the upper-body and then searching for the face inside of the human b…

Accurate diagnosis of propeller faults is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of quadrotors. Training a fault classifier using simulated data and deploying it on a real quadrotor is a cost-effective and safe approach. However, the simulation-to-reality gap often leads to poor performance of the classifier when applied in real flight. In this work, we propose a deep learning model that addresses this issue by utilizing newly identified features (NIF) as input and utilizing domain adaptation techniques to reduce the simulation-to-reality gap. In addition, we introduce an adjust…

The proposed robotic system can have a variety of novel applications for UAVs where their high speed and maneuverability, as well as their ease of deployment and wide field of vision, give them a superior advantage. In addition, the major limitation of limited flight time of quadrotor UAVs is typically addressed through an umbilical power cable, which naturally integrates with the p…
The quest for a brain-inspired learning algorithm for robots has culminated in the free energy principle from neuroscience that models the brain's perception and action as an optimization over its free energy objectives. Based on this idea, we propose an estimation algorithm for accurate output prediction of a quadrotor flying under unmodelled wind conditions. The key idea behind this work is the handling of unmodelled wind dynamics and the model's non-linearity errors as coloured noise in the system, and leveraging it for accurate output predictions. This paper provides the first experimental…
Enforcing safety on precise trajectory tracking is critical for aerial robotics subject to wind disturbances. In this paper, we present a learning-based safety-preserving cascaded quadratic programming control (SPQC) for safe trajectory tracking under wind disturbances. The SPQC controller consists of a position-level controller and an attitude-level controller. Gaussian Processes (GPs) are utilized to estimate the uncertainties caused by wind disturbances, and then a nominal Lyapunov-based cascaded quadratic program (QP) controller is designed to track the reference trajectory. To avoid unexp…

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are finding use in applications that place increasing emphasis on robustness to external disturbances including extreme wind. However, traditional multirotor UAV platforms do not directly sense wind; conventional flow sensors are too slow, insensitive, or bulky for widespread integration on UAVs. Instead, drones typically observe the effects of wind indirectly through accumulated errors in position or trajectory tracking. In this work, we integrate a novel flow sensor based on micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) hot-wire technology developed in our prior wor…
This paper addresses the problem of real-time vision-based autonomous obstacle avoidance in unstructured environments for quadrotor UAVs. We assume that our UAV is equipped with a forward facing stereo camera as the only sensor to perceive the world around it. Moreover, all the computations are performed onboard. Feasible trajectory generation in this kind of problems requires rapid collision checks along with efficient planning algorithms. We propose a trajectory generation approach in the depth image space, which refers to the environment information as depicted by the depth images. In order…

Ability to recover from faults and continue mission is desirable for many quadrotor applications. The quadrotor's rotor may fail while performing a mission and it is essential to develop recovery strategies so that the vehicle is not damaged. In this paper, we develop a model-free deep reinforcement learning approach for a quadrotor to recover from a single rotor failure. The approach is based on Soft-actor-critic that enables the vehicle to hover, land, and perform complex maneuvers. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed approach using a custom simulator. The results show …
