Blue straggler stars (BSS) have been identified in star clusters and in field populations in our own Milky Way galaxy and in its satellite galaxies. They manifest as stars bluer and more luminous than the dominant old population, and usually have a spatial distribution that follows the old population. Their progenitors are likely to have been close binaries. We investigate trends of the BSS population in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) and in the bulge of the Milky Way and find an anti-correlation between the relative frequency of BSS and the metallicity of the parent population. The rate of occurrence of BSS in the metal-poor dwarf galaxies is approximately twice that found in the solar-metallicity bulge population. This trend of decreasing relative population of BSS with increasing metallicity mirrors that found for the close-binary fraction in the field population of the Milky Way. We argue that the dominant mode of BSS formation in low-density environments is likely to be mass transfer in close-binary systems. It then follows that the similarity between the trends for BSS in the dSph and field stars in our Galaxy supports the proposal that the small-scale fragmentation during star formation is driven by the same dominant physical process, despite the diversity in environments, plausibly gravitational instability of proto-stellar discs.
Bifurcated patterns of blue straggler stars in their color--magnitude diagrams have atracted significant attention. This type of special (but rare) pattern of two distinct blue straggler sequences is commonly interpreted as evidence of cluster core-collapse-driven stellar collisions as an efficient formation mechanism. Here, we report the detection of a bifurcated blue straggler distribution in a young Large MagellanicCloud cluster, NGC 2173. Because of the cluster's low central stellar number density and its young age, dynamical analysis shows that stellar collisions alone cannot explain the …
We created artificial color-magnitude diagrams of Monte Carlo dynamical models of globular clusters, and then used observational methods to determine the number of blue stragglers in those clusters. We compared these blue stragglers to various cluster properties, mimicking work that has been done for blue stragglers in Milky Way globular clusters to determine the dominant formation mechanism(s) of this unusual stellar population. We find that a mass-based prescription for selecting blue stragglers will choose approximately twice as many blue stragglers than a selection criterion that was devel…
We analyze the position of the two populations of blue stragglers in the globular cluster M30 in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Both populations of blue stragglers are brighter than the cluster's turn-off, but one population (the blue blue-stragglers) align along the zero-age main-sequence whereas the (red) population is elevated in brightness (or colour) by $\sim 0.75$ mag. Based on stellar evolution and merger simulations we argue that the red population, which composes about 40\% of the blue stragglers in M 30, is formed at a constant rate of $\sim 2.8$ blue stragglers per Gyr over the la…
We present a homogeneous study of blue straggler stars across ten outer halo globular clusters, three classical dwarf spheroidal and nine ultra-faint galaxies based on deep and wide-field photometric data taken with MegaCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We find blue straggler stars to be ubiquitous among these Milky Way satellites. Based on these data, we can test the importance of primordial binaries or multiple systems on blue straggler star formation in low density environments. For the outer halo globular clusters we find an anti-correlation between the specific frequency of blue …
Blue Stragglers are stars located in an unexpected region of the color-magnitude diagram of a stellar population, as they appear bluer and more luminous than the stars in the turnoff region. They are ubiquitous, since they have been found among Milky Way field stars, in open and globular clusters, and also in other galaxies of the Local Group. Here we present a study on the blue straggler population of the old and metal-rich open cluster Collinder 261, based on Gaia DR2 data and on a multi-epoch radial velocity survey conducted with FLAMES@VLT. We also analyze the radial distribution of the bl…
We analyze {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} observations of nine Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages of 1--2 Gyr to search for evolved counterparts of blue straggler stars. Near the red clump regions in the clusters' color--magnitude diagrams, we find branches of evolved stars that are much brighter than normal evolved stars. We examine the effects of photometric artifacts, differential reddening, and field contamination. We conclude that these bright evolved stars cannot be explained by any of these effects. Our statistical tests show that the contributions of photometric uncertainties…
We investigate the evolution of the radial distribution of Blue Straggler Stars through a set of Monte Carlo simulations of star clusters under a variety of initial conditions. We used a novel technique based on the "artificial oversampling" of the distribution function of the Blue Stragglers and control population to tear down the effect of statistical fluctuations affecting the determination of the relative distribution of these stellar populations. We find that a bimodal distribution, qualitatively similar but much less pronounced than those observed in many globular clusters, can naturally…
Blue straggler stars have been proposeed as powerful indicators to measure the dynamical state of Galactic globular clusters. Here we examine for the first time if this framework of blue straggler stars as dynamical clocks, which was specifically developed for Galactic globular clusters, may also hold for younger globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Using Hubble Space Telescope observations, we study seven Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages between ~700 Myr and 7 Gyr. We confirm that our sample clusters are consistent with the empirical correlation previously derived fo…
Blue stragglers are thought to be formed from the merger or coalescence of two stars, but the details of their formation in clusters has been difficult to disentangle. We discuss the two main formation mechanisms for blue stragglers (stellar collisions or mass transfer in a binary system). We then look at the additional complications caused by the stars living in the dynamically active environment of a star cluster. We review the recent observational and theoretical work which addresses the question "which mechanism dominates?" and conclude that the most likely answer is that both mechanisms a…
We present a study, based on Gaia DR2, of the population of blue straggler stars (BSS) in the open clusters Trumpler 5, Trumpler 20, and NGC 2477. All candidates were selected according to their position in the color-magnitude diagram, to their proper motion components, and to their parallax. We also looked for yellow stragglers, i.e., possible evolved blue stragglers. We found that Trumpler 5 hosts a large BSS population, which allowed us to analyze their radial distribution as a probe of the cluster's dynamical status. The BSS distribution was compared with that of red giant branch stars (RG…
In this chapter I review the recent developments regarding the study of Blue Stragglers (BSS) in dwarf galaxies. The loose density environment of dwarf galaxies resembles that of the Galactic Halo, hence it is natural to compare their common BSS properties. At the same time, it is unescapable to compare with the BSS properties in Galactic Globular clusters, which constitute the reference point for BSS studies. Admittedly, the literature on BSS in dwarf galaxies is not plentiful. The limitation is mostly due to the large distance to even the closest dwarf galaxies. Nevertheless, recent studies …
In this paper I present an overview of the main observational properties of a special class of exotic objects (the so-called Blue Straggler Stars, BSSs) in Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs). The BSS specific frequency and their radial distribution are discussed in the framework of using this stellar population as probe of GC internal dynamics. In particular, the shape of the BSS radial distribution has been found to be a powerful tracer of the dynamical evolution of stellar systems, thus allowing the definition of an empirical "clock" able to measure the dynamical age of stellar aggregates from…
A binary-related origin mediated by environmental conditions for blue straggler stars

Blue straggler stars are exotic objects present in all stellar environments whose nature and formation channels are still partially unclear. They seem to be particularly abundant in open clusters (OCs), thus offering a unique chance to tackle these problems statistically. We aim to build up a new and homogeneous catalogue of blue straggler stars (BSS) in Galactic OCs using Gaia to provide a more solid assessment of the membership of these stars. We also aim to explore possible relationships of the straggler abundance with the parent cluster's structural and dynamical parameters. As a by-product…
We present early results from a detailed analysis of the BSS population in Galactic GCs based on HST data.Using proper motion cleaning of the color-magnitude diagrams we construct a large catalog of BSSs and study some population properties.Stellar evolutionary models are used to find stellar mass and age estimates for the BSS populations in order to establish constraints related to the dynamical interactions in which they may have formed.
We present the results obtained from Near-UV observations of the cluster NGC 5466 taken with UVIT onboard AstroSat to study the radial distribution of Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs), covering the cluster region up to a radius of 14$'$. Our study confirms that the BSSs are more centrally concentrated than Horizontal Branch (HB) stars in the cluster. We do not find a statistically significant rising trend in the radial distribution of BSSs for the outer regions, as most of the previously catalogued BSSs that are located in the cluster outskirts were found to be non-members, quasars or galaxies. Thi…
We discuss the observational properties of a special class of objects (the so-called "Blue Straggler Stars", BSSs) in the framework of using this stellar population as probe of the dynamical processes occurring in high-density stellar systems. Indeed, the shape of the BSS radial distribution and their level of central concentration are powerful tracers of the stage of dynamical evolution reached by the host cluster since formation. Hence, they can be used as empirical chronometers able to measure the dynamical age of stellar systems. In addition, the presence of a double BSS sequence in the co…
The Gaia HR diagram shows the presence of apparently young stars at high tangential velocities. Using a simple analytical model I show that these stars are likely to be blue stragglers. Once normalized to red giant stars, the fraction of nearby halo blue stragglers is of order 20 percent, and remarkably close to that measured in dwarf galaxies. Motivated by this similarity, I apply to field blue stragglers scaling relations inferred from blue stragglers in dwarf galaxies. Doing this for the Milky Way halo returns an average stellar density of 3.4 x 10^-5 Msun/pc^3 and a dark matter density of …
We present the results of a set of N-body simulations aimed at exploring how the process of mass segregation (as traced by the spatial distribution of blue straggler stars, BSSs) is affected by the presence of a population of heavy dark remnants (as neutron stars and black holes). To this end, clusters characterized by different initial concentrations and different fractions of dark remnants have been modeled. We find that an increasing fraction of stellar-mass black holes significantly delays the mass segregation of BSSs and the visible stellar component. In order to trace the evolution of BS…
We present new Blue Straggler Star (BSS) catalogs in 38 Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) based on multi-passband and multi-epoch treasury survey data from the Hubble Space Telescope. We measure precise astrometry and relative proper motions of stars in all target clusters and performed a subsequent cluster membership selection. We study the accuracy of our proper motion measurements using estimates of central velocity dispersions and find very good agreement with previous studies in the literature. Finally, we present a homogeneous BSS selection method, that expands the classic BSS selection …
We report the analysis of a binary blue straggler in NGC 6752 with a short orbital period of 0.315 d and a W UMA-type light curve. We use photometric data spanning 13 years to place limits on the mass ratio (0.15<q<0.35), luminosity ratio (L1/L2 about 4.0) and the ratio of the radii of the components (r1/r2 about 2.0). The effective temperatures of the components are nearly identical, and the system is detached or semi-detached (in the latter case the component filling its Roche lobe is the secondary). Such a configuration is unusual given the shortness of the orbital period, and it must have …
(abridged) We use newly available empirical binary fractions for globular clusters to carry out a direct test of the binary evolution hypothesis, and of collisional channels that involve binary stars. More specifically, using the previously reported correlation between blue straggler numbers and core mass as a benchmark, we test for correlations with the number of binary stars, as well as with the rates of single-single, single-binary, and binary-binary encounters. Surprisingly, we find that the simple correlation with core mass remains by far the strongest predictor of blue straggler populati…
We present the first far-UV (FUV) imaging results of the intermediate-age Galactic open cluster NGC 2818 that has a Planetary nebula (PN) within the field using images taken from the Ultra-violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard AstroSat. We identify cluster members by combining UVIT-detected sources with Gaia EDR3 data. We detect four bright and hot blue straggler stars (BSSs) and two yellow straggler stars (YSSs) based on their location in the optical and FUV-optical color-magnitude diagrams. Based on the parameters estimated using Spectral Energy Distribution (SED), we infer that BSSs are ei…
Binary systems can evolve into immensely different exotic systems such as blue straggle stars (BSSs), yellow straggler stars, cataclysmic variables, type Ia supernovae depending on their initial mass, the orbital parameters and evolution. The aim of this thesis is to understand the demographics of post-mass-transfer systems (BSSs, white dwarfs and blue lurkers) present in the open clusters and how they are formed. First, we identified the cluster members using Gaia EDR3 data in six open clusters. Two of the clusters, M67 and King2, were studied in detail using UVIT, Gaia, GALEX, 2MASS and othe…
Using the high-resolution observations obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, we analyzed the blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2213. We found that the radial distribution of BSSs is consistent with that of the normal giant stars in NGC 2213, showing no evidence of mass segregation. However, an analytic calculation carried out for these BSSs shows that they are already dynamically old, because the estimated half-mass relaxation time for these BSSs is significantly shorter than the isochronal age of the cluster. We also performed direct N-body simulations fo…
King 2, one of the oldest clusters in the Milky Way, with an age of $\sim$ 6 Gyr and distance of $\sim 5700$ pc, has been observed with UVIT payload on the \textit{ASTROSAT}. With membership information derived from {\it Gaia} EDR3, the cluster is found to have 39 blue straggler stars (BSSs). We created multi-wavelength spectra-energy distributions (SED) of all the BSSs. Out of 10 UV detected BSSs, 6 bright ones fitted with double component SEDs and were found to have hotter companions with properties similar to extreme horizontal branch (EHB)/subdwarf B (sdB) stars, with a range in luminosity…
For a sample of 38 Galactic globular clusters (GCs), we confront the observed distributions of blue straggler (BS) proper motions and masses (derived from isochrone fitting) from the BS catalog of Simunovic & Puzia with theoretical predictions for each of the two main competing BS formation mechanisms. These are mass transfer from an evolved donor on to a main-sequence (MS) star in a close binary system, and direct collisions involving MS stars during binary encounters. We use the \texttt{FEWBODY} code to perform simulations of single-binary and binary-binary interactions. This provides collis…
Although the formation of blue straggler stars (BSSs) is routinely attributed to stellar interactions in binary systems, the relative importance of the direct collision and slow(er) stellar coalescence formation channels is still poorly understood. We selected a sample of 24 Magellanic Cloud star clusters for which multi-passband Hubble Space Telescope images are available to address this outstanding question. We compiled a BSS database, containing both traditional and evolved BSSs. We found a robust correlation between the number of BSSs in a cluster's core and its core mass, $N_{\rm BSS, cor…
We constructed a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) astro-photometric catalog of the central region of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 1261. This catalog, complemented with Gaia DR2 data sampling the external regions, has been used to estimate the structural parameters of the system (i.e., core, half-mass, tidal radii and concentration) from its resolved star density profile. We computed high-precision proper motions thanks to multi-epoch HST data and derived the cluster velocity dispersion profile in the plane of the sky for the innermost region, finding that the system is isotropic. The combinat…
By using the high resolution spectrograph FLAMES@VLT we performed the first systematic campaign devoted to measure chemical abundances of blue straggler stars (BSSs). These stars, whose existence is not predicted by the canonical stellar evolutionary theory, are likely the product of the interactions between stars in the dense environment of Globular Clusters. Two main scenarios for BSS formation (mass transfer in binary systems and stellar collisions) have been proposed and hydrodynamical simulations predict different chemical patterns in the two cases, in particular C and O depletion for mas…
WOCS 4540 is the longest orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}=3030$ days) blue straggler (BSS) - white dwarf (WD) pair in the old open cluster NGC 188 . It also contains one of the most luminous BSS in the cluster. Prior \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} COS spectroscopy measured a WD mass of 0.53 $M_{\odot}$, indicative of a carbon-oxygen WD and suggesting previous mass transfer from an asymptotic branch giant (AGB). Detailed modeling of the system evolution, including red giant branch phase wind mass transfer, AGB wind Roche-lobe overflow and regular Roche-lobe overflow, is done with Modules for Exper…
High-resolution {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} imaging observations show that the radial distribution of the field-decontaminated sample of 162 'blue straggler' stars (BSs) in the $11.7^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ Gyr-old Large Magellanic Cloud cluster Hodge 11 exhibits a clear bimodality. In combination with their distinct loci in color--magnitude space, this offers new evidence in support of theoretical expectations that suggest different BS formation channels as a function of stellar density. In the cluster's color--magnitude diagram, the BSs in the inner 15$"$ (roughly corresponding to the cluster's core…
We present and discuss new BVI CCD photometry in the field of the globular cluster Arp~2, which is considered a member of the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy. The main goal of this investigation is to study of the statistics and spatial distribution of blue straggler stars in the cluster. Blue stragglers are stars observed to be hotter and bluer than other stars with the same luminosity in their environment. As such, they appear to be much younger than the rest of the stellar population. Two main channels have been suggested to produce such stars: (1) collisions between stars in clusters o…
We present an analysis of a new, large sample of field blue-straggler stars (BSSs) in the thick disk and halo system of the Galaxy, based on stellar spectra obtained during the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). Using estimates of stellar atmospheric parameters obtained from application of the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline, we obtain a sample of some 8000 BSSs, which are considered along with a previously selected sample of some 4800 blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars. We derive the ratio of BSSs to BHB stars, F$_{\rm …
NGC 7789 is a $\sim$1.6 Gyr old, populous open cluster located at $\sim$2000 pc. We characterize the blue straggler stars (BSS) of this cluster using the Ultraviolet (UV) data from the UVIT/AstroSat. We present spectral energy distributions (SED) of 15 BSS candidates constructed using multi-wavelength data ranging from UV to IR wavelengths. In 8 BSS candidates, a single temperature SED is found to be satisfactory. We discover hot companions in 5 BSS candidates. The hot companions with Teff $\sim$11750-15500 K, R $\sim$0.069-0.242 R$_{\odot}$, and L $\sim$0.25-1.55 L$_{\odot}$, are most likely …
Using HST/WFPC2 data, we have performed a comparative study of the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) populations in the central regions of the globular clusters AM 1, Eridanus, Palomar 3, and Palomar 4. Located at distances RGC > 50 kpc from the Galactic Centre, these are (together with Palomar 14 and NGC 2419) the most distant clusters in the Halo. We determine their colour-magnitude diagrams and centres of gravity. The four clusters turn out to have similar ages (10.5-11 Gyr), significantly smaller than those of the inner-Halo globulars, and similar metallicities. By exploiting wide field ground bas…
We present a multi-passband photometric study of the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC\,1261, using available space- and ground-based survey data.~The inner BSS population is found to have two distinct sequences in the color-magnitude diagram, similar to double BSS sequences detected in other GCs. These well defined sequences are presumably linked to single short-lived events such as core collapse, which are expected to boost the formation of BSSs.~In agreement with this, we find a BSS sequence in NGC\,1261 which can be well reproduced individually …
We present BV photometry of four Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy globular clusters: Arp 2, NGC 5634, Palomar 12, and Terzan 8, obtained with the Danish telescope at ESO-La Silla. We measure the structural parameters of the clusters using a King profile fitting, obtaining the first reliable measurements of the tidal radius of Arp 2 and Terzan 8. These two clusters are remarkably extended and with low concentrations; with a concentration of only c = 0.41 +/- 0.02, Terzan 8 is less concentrated than any cluster in our Galaxy. Blue stragglers are identified in the four clusters, and their spat…
We have constructed the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of a sample of Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs) in the core of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, taking advantage of the large set of high resolution images, ranging from the ultraviolet to the near infrared, obtained with the ACS/HRC camera of the Hubble Space Telescope. Our final BSS sample consists of 22 objects, spanning the whole color and magnitude extension of the BSS sequence in 47 Tucanae. We fitted the BSS broadband SEDs with models to derive temperature, surface gravity, radius, luminosity and mass. We show that BSSs indeed defi…
We use photometry and proper motions from Gaia DR2 to determine the blue straggler star (BSS) populations of 16 old (1-10 Gyr), nearby ($d< 3500$ pc) open clusters. We find that the fractional number of BSS compared to RGB stars increases with age, starting near zero at 1 Gyr and flattening to $\sim 0.35$ by 4 Gyr. Fitting stellar evolutionary tracks to these BSS, we find that their mass distribution peaks at a few tenths of a solar mass above the main-sequence turnoff. BSS more than 0.5 $M_\odot$ above the turnoff make up only $\sim25$\% of the sample, and BSS more than 1.0 $M_\odot$ above th…
Li et al. (2018) (hereafter L18) detected two apparently distinct populations of blue straggler stars (BSSs) in the young globular cluster NGC 2173, a similar feature as observed in numerous Galactic globular clusters (GCs). Recently, Dalessandro et al. (2018) (D18) compared the observed color--magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of both the cluster and a nearby reference field (although observed with the ACS/WFC instrument). They conclude that the bifurcated pattern of BSSs in NGC 2173 observed by L18 is a field contamination artefact. In this note, we explore the central concentration properties of th…
In this paper we report on the discovery of a double blue straggler star (BSS) sequence in the core of the core-collapsed cluster M15 (NGC 7078). We performed a detailed photometric analysis of the extremely dense core of the cluster using a set of images secured with the Advanced Camera for Survey in the High Resolution Channel mode on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. The proper combination of the large number of single frames in the near-UV (F220W), and blue (F435W) filters allowed us to perform a superb modeling of the Point Spread Function and an accurate deblending procedure. The Color-M…
With the equivalent area of a 16m telescope, ESPRESSO in 4UT mode allows to inaugurate high resolution spectroscopy for solar-type stars belonging to extragalactic globular clusters. We determine the chemical composition of an extragalactic blue straggler. The star has a G magnitude of 19.01 and belongs to the globular cluster Pal12, that is associated to the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. Abundances are computed by using high resolution spectroscopy and LTE analysis. Two 50 minutes ESPRESSO spectra, co-added, provide a Signal to Noise Ratio of 25 with a resolving power R=70000. This allows us to m…
We report the first detections of Blue Straggler Stars (BSS) in the bulge of the Milky Way galaxy. Proper motions from extensive space-based observations along a single sight-line allow us to separate a sufficiently clean and well-characterized bulge sample that we are able to detect a small population of bulge objects in the region of the color-magnitude diagram commonly occupied young objects and blue strgglers. However, variability measurements of these objects clearly establish that a fraction of them are blue stragglers. Out of the 42 objects found in this region of the color-magnitude di…
We developed a mathematical model to derive time scales and the presence of BS stars. The model is based on the variation of mass through a circle into the cluster defined by a radius, and at a time; this mass cross is translated into a differential equation that it can be integrated for a given radius (r) and a determined time (t). From this equation we can derive the different time scales that allows us to reach conclusions like: clusters not containing blue strugglers (BS) stars disappear younger than those clusters containing BS. In clusters containing BS stars, the volume which takes up h…
Among the most striking feature of blue straggler stars (BSS) is the presence of multiple sequences of BSSs in the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of several globular clusters. It is often envisaged that such a multiple BSS sequence would arise due a recent core collapse of the host cluster, triggering a number of stellar collisions and binary mass transfers simultaneously over a brief episode of time. Here we examine this scenario using direct N-body computations of moderately massive star clusters (of order 10^4 Msun ). As a preliminary attempt, these models are initiated with approx. 8-10 …
The existence of blue straggler stars (BSSs) in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) is still an open question. In fact, many BSS candidates have been observed in the Local Group dSphs, but it is unclear whether they are real BSSs or young stars. Shedding light on the nature of these BSS candidates is crucial, in order to understand the star formation history of dSphs. In this paper, we consider BSS candidates in Sculptor and Fornax. In Fornax there are strong hints that the BSS population is contaminated by young stars, whereas in Sculptor there is no clear evidence of recent star formation. We …
We used a combination of high-resolution optical images acquired with the Hubble Space Telescope and near-IR wide-field data to investigate the stellar density profile and the population of blue straggler star (BSS) in the Galactic globular cluster NGC6256, with the aim of probing its current stage of internal dynamical evolution. We found that the inner stellar density profile significantly deviates from a King model while is well reproduced by a steep cusp with a power-law slope alpha=-0.89, thus implying that the cluster is currently in the post core-collapse (PCC) phase. This is also confi…
The level of central segregation of Blue Straggler stars proved to be an excellent tracer of the dynamical evolution of old star clusters (the so-called "dynamical clock"), both in the Milky Way and in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The $A^{+}$ parameter, used to measure the Blue Stragglers degree of segregation, has in fact been found to strongly correlate with the parent cluster central relaxation time. Here we studied the Blue-Straggler population of two young stellar systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud, namely NGC 339 (which is 6 Gyr old) and NGC 419 (with an age of only 1.5 Gyr), in order …
We present the first dynamical study of Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs) in three Galactic globular clusters, NGC\,3201, NGC\,5139 ($ω$Cen), and NGC\,6218, based on medium-resolution spectroscopy (R 10000) obtained with IMACS. Our BSS candidate selection technique uses HST/ACS and ESO/WFI photometric data out to $>\!4.5\,r_c$. We use radial velocity measurements to discard non-members and achieve a success rate of $\sim93\%$, which yields a sample of 116 confirmed BSSs. Using the penalized pixel fitting method (pPXF) we measure the $v\sin(i)$ values of the sample BSSs and find their distribution fu…
