Topological field theories emerge at low energy in strongly-correlated condensed matter systems and appear in the context of planar gravity. In particular, the study of Chern-Simons terms gives rise to the concept of flux attachment when the gauge field is coupled to matter, yielding flux-charge composites. Here we investigate the generation of flux attachment in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of non-linear synthetic gauge potentials. In doing so, we identify the U(1) Chern-Simons gauge field as a singular density-dependent gauge potential, which in turn can be expressed as a Berry connection. We envisage a proof-of-concept scheme where the artificial gauge field is perturbatively induced by an effective light-matter detuning created by interparticle interactions. At a mean field level, we recover the action of a "charged" superfluid minimally coupled to both a background and a Chern-Simons gauge field. Remarkably, a localised density perturbation in combination with a non-linear gauge potential gives rise to an effective composite boson model of fractional quantum Hall effect, displaying anyonic vortices.
Artificial magnetic fields and spin-orbit couplings have been recently generated in ultracold gases in view of realizing topological states of matter and frustrated magnetism in a highly-controllable environment. Despite being dynamically tunable, such artificial gauge fields are genuinely classical and exhibit no back-action from the neutral particles. Here we go beyond this paradigm, and demonstrate how quantized dynamical gauge fields can be created in mixtures of ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Specifically, we propose a protocol by which atoms of one species carry a magnetic flux fel…
Hall tube with a tunable flux is an important geometry for studying quantum Hall physics, but its experimental realization in real space is still challenging. Here, we propose to realize a synthetic Hall tube with tunable flux in a one-dimensional optical lattice with the synthetic ring dimension defined by atomic hyperfine states. We investigate the effects of the flux on the system topology and study its quench dynamics. Utilizing the tunable flux, we show how to realize topological charge pumping, where interesting charge flow and transport are observed in rotated spin basis. Finally, we sh…
We introduce topological gauge fields as nontrivial field configurations enforced by topological currents. These fields crucially determine the form of statistical gauge fields that couple to matter and transmute their statistics. We discuss the physical mechanism underlying the composite particle picture and argue that it is a duality of gauge forms that naturally relates to the notion of bosonisation in arbitrary dimensions. This is based on obtaining a generalised version of flux attachment, which yields a density-dependent gauge potential. We recover well-known results, resolve old controv…
We propose a general strategy for generating synthetic magnetic fields in complex lattices with non-trivial connectivity based on light-matter coupling in cold atomic gases. Our approach starts from an underlying optical flux lattice in which flux arises by coupling several internal states. Starting from a high symmetry optical flux lattice, we superpose a scalar potential with a super- or sublattice period in order to eliminate links between the original lattice sites. As an alternative to changing connectivity, the approach can also be used to create or remove lattice sites from the underlyi…
Scale-invariant fluxes are the defining property of turbulent cascades, but their direct measurement is a notorious problem. Here we perform such a measurement for a direct energy cascade in a turbulent quantum gas. Using a time-periodic force, we inject energy at a large lengthscale and generate a cascade in a uniformly-trapped Bose gas. The adjustable trap depth provides a high-momentum cutoff $k_{\textrm{D}}$, which realises a synthetic dissipation scale. This gives us direct access to the particle flux across a momentum shell of radius $k_{\textrm{D}}$, and the tunability of $k_{\textrm{D}…
We theoretically study the dynamics of $n$-level spin-orbit coupled alkaline-earth fermionic atoms with SU($n$) symmetric interactions. We consider three dimensional lattices with tunneling along one dimension, and the internal levels treated as a synthetic dimension, realizing an $n$-leg flux ladder. Laser driving is used to couple the internal levels and to induce an effective magnetic flux through the ladder. We focus on the dense and strongly interacting regime, where in the absence of flux the system behaves as a Mott insulator with suppressed motional dynamics. At integer and fractional …
Flux ladders constitute the minimal setup enabling a systematic understanding of the rich physics of interacting particles subjected simultaneously to strong magnetic fields and a lattice potential. In this paper, the ground-state phase diagram of a flux-ladder model is mapped out using extensive density-matrix renormalization-group simulations. The emphasis is put on parameters which can be experimentally realized exploiting the internal states of potassium atoms as a synthetic dimension. The focus is on accessible observables such as the chiral current and the leg-population imbalance. Consi…
Arrays of highly excited Rydberg atoms can be used as powerful quantum simulation platforms. Here, we introduce an approach that makes it possible to implement fully controllable effective spin interactions in such systems. We show that optical Rydberg dressing with multicolor laser fields opens up distinct interaction channels that enable complete site-selective control of the induced interactions and favorable scaling with respect to decoherence. We apply this method to generate synthetic gauge fields for Rydberg excitations where the effective magnetic flux can be manipulated at the single-…
We describe a synthetic three-leg Hall ladder system with a tunable magnetic flux for neutral $^{173}$Yb atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The ladder legs are formed by three hyperfine ground spin states of the atoms, and the complex interleg links are generated through Raman couplings between the spin states using multiple laser beams. The effective magnetic flux through a ladder plaquette, $ϕ$, is controlled by the angles of the Raman laser beams with the lattice axis. We investigate the quench dynamics of the Hall ladder system for $ϕ\approx\fracπ{3}, \fracπ{2},$ and $\frac{2π}{3}…
Quantum simulators are attracting great interest because they promise insight into the behavior of quantum many-body systems that are prohibitive for classical simulations. The generic output of quantum simulators are snapshots, obtained by means of projective measurements. A central goal of theoretical efforts must be to predict the exact same quantities that can be measured in experiments. Here, we report on the snapshot based calculation of particle currents in quantum lattice models with a conserved number of particles. It is shown how the full probability distribution of locally resolved …

The emergence of Hofstadter butterflies for bosons in synthetic-gauge-field antiferromagnetic patterns is theoretically studied. We report on a specific tight-binding model of artificial antiferromagnetic structures incorporating both nearest and next-to-nearest neighbour tunnelings and allowing for the formation of the fractal spectra even with the vanishing gauge field flux through the lattice. The model is applied to square and honeycomb lattices. Possible experimental realization is suggested for the lattices of microring resonators connected by waveguides. Finally, the structure of the bu…
We analyze the localization properties of the disordered Hubbard model in the presence of a synthetic magnetic field. An analysis of level spacing ratio shows a clear transition from ergodic to many-body localized phase. The transition shifts to larger disorder strengths with increasing magnetic flux. Study of dynamics of local correlations and entanglement entropy indicates that charge excitations remain localized whereas spin degree of freedom gets delocalized in the presence of the synthetic flux. This residual ergodicity is enhanced by the presence of the magnetic field with dynamical obse…
Energy bands of electrons in a square lattice potential threaded by a uniform magnetic field exhibit a fractal structure known as the Hofstadter butterfly. Here we study a Fermi gas in a 2D optical lattice within a linear cavity with a tilt along the cavity axis. The hopping along the cavity axis is only induced by resonant Raman scattering of transverse pump light into a standing wave cavity mode. Choosing a suitable pump geometry allows to realize the Hofstadter-Harper model with a cavity-induced dynamical synthetic magnetic field, which appears at the onset of the superradiant phase transit…
Recent cold atom experiments have realized models where each hyperfine state at an optical lattice site can be regarded as a separate site in a synthetic dimension. In such synthetic ribbon configurations, manipulation of the transitions between the hyperfine levels provide direct control of the hopping in the synthetic dimension. This effect was used to simulate a magnetic field through the ribbon. Precise control over the hopping matrix elements in the synthetic dimension makes it possible to change this artificial magnetic field much faster than the time scales associated with atomic motion…
