The TESS space mission is producing superb data for asteroseismology, eclipsing binary stars, gyrochronology, and other fields of stellar astronomy where the data are variable light curves. We show that TESS data are excellent for astrophysical inference from peculiar stars that show variability. The Ap stars have the strongest magnetic fields of any main-sequence stars. Some have been shown to have rotation periods of months to centuries. The astrophysical cause of their slow rotation -- the braking mechanism -- is not known with certainty. These stars are rare: there are currently about 3 dozen with known periods. The magnetic Ap stars have long-lived spots that allow precise determination of their rotation periods. We show that most Ap stars with TESS data that show no low-frequency variability must have rotation periods longer than a TESS sector of 27 d. We find 60 Ap stars in the southern ecliptic hemisphere TESS data with no rotational variability, of which at most a few can be pole-on, and six likely have nearly aligned magnetic and rotation axes. Of the other 54, 31 were previously known to have long rotation periods or low projected equatorial velocities, which proves our technique; 23 are new discoveries. These are prime targets for long-term magnetic studies. We also find that 22 per cent of long-period Ap stars are roAp stars, versus only 3 per cent of the other Ap stars studied with TESS sector 1 and 2 data. This work demonstrates astrophysical inference from nonvariable stars -- "something for nothing".
We present the first detailed investigation of six eclipsing binary systems in the TESS field. The TESS light curves of the targets are analysed by determining the initial effective temperatures via SED fits. The absolute parameters are derived and the systems are compared to well-known binaries of the same type. Results show that CD-58~791, CD-62~1257 and TYC~9356-355-1 are detached binary systems. CD-54~942 and UCAC4~136-007295 are contact binaries while TYC~8508-1413-1 is a semidetached system.
We present two new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars, TIC 198781841 and TIC 229960986, discovered in TESS photometric data. The periodogram of TIC 198781841 has a large peak at 166.506 d$^{-1}$ (1.93 mHz), with two nearby peaks at 163.412 d$^{-1}$ (1.89 mHz) and 169.600 d$^{-1}$ (1.96 mHz). These correspond to three independent high-overtone pressure modes, with alternating even and odd $\ell$ values. TIC 229960986 has a high-frequency triplet centered at 191.641 d$^{-1}$ (2.218 mHz), with sidebands at 191.164 d$^{-1}$ (2.213 mHz) and 192.119 d$^{-1}$ (2.224 mHz). This pulsation appears to b…
It has long been suspected that tidal forces in close binary stars could modify the orientation of the pulsation axis of the constituent stars. Such stars have been searched for, but until now never detected. Here we report the discovery of tidally trapped pulsations in the ellipsoidal variable HD 74423 in TESS space photometry data. The system contains a Delta Scuti pulsator in a 1.6-d orbit, whose pulsation mode amplitude is strongly modulated at the orbital frequency, which can be explained if the pulsations have a much larger amplitude in one hemisphere of the star. We interpret this as an…
Cataclysmic variables (CVs) exhibit a plethora of variable phenomena many of which require long, uninterrupted light curves to reveal themselves in detail. The month long datasets provided by TESS are well suited for this purpose. TESS has the additional advantage to have observed a huge number of stars, among them many CVs. Here, a search for periodic variations in a sample of CVs of the novalike and old novae subtypes is presented. In 10 of the 15 targets either previously unseen positive or negative superhumps or unusual features in known superhumps are identified. The TESS light curves dem…
We present results of a Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) search for short-period pulsations in compact stellar objects observed in years 1 and 3 of the TESS mission, during which the southern ecliptic hemisphere was targeted. We describe the TESS data used and the details of the search method. For many of the targets, we use unpublished spectroscopic observations to classify the objects. From the TESS photometry, we clearly identify 43 short-period hot-subdwarf pulsators, including 32 sdB stars, eight sdOB stars, two sdO stars, and, significantly, one He-sdOB star, which is the fir…
We present a catalog of 97 uniformly-vetted candidates for quadruple star systems. The candidates were identified in TESS Full Frame Image data from Sectors 1 through 42 through a combination of machine learning techniques and visual examination, with major contributions from a dedicated group of citizen scientists. All targets exhibit two sets of eclipses with two different periods, both of which pass photocenter tests confirming that the eclipses are on-target. This catalog outlines the statistical properties of the sample, nearly doubles the number of known multiply-eclipsing quadruple syst…
TESS photometry of the extremely helium-rich hot subdwarfs BD+37 442 and BD+37 1977 demonstrates multi-periodic low-amplitude variability with principal periods of 0.56 and 1.14 d, respectively, and with both first and second harmonics present. The lightcurves are not perfectly regular, implying additional periodic and/or non-periodic content. Possible causes are examined, including the binary hypothesis originally introduced to explain X-ray observations, differentially rotating surface inhomogeneities, and pulsations. If the principal photometric periods correspond to the rotation periods, t…
The rotation periods of the magnetic Ap stars span five to six orders of magnitude. Period differentiation must have taken place at the pre-main sequence stage, but the physical processes that lead to it remain elusive. The study of Ap stars that have rotation periods of tens to hundreds of years represents a promising avenue to gain additional insight into the origin and evolution of rotation in Ap stars. Historically, almost all the longest period Ap stars known have been found to be strongly magnetic; very few weakly magnetic Ap stars with very long periods have been identified and studied.…
Stellar RV jitter due to surface activity may bias the RV semi-amplitude and mass of rocky planets. The amplitude of the jitter may be estimated from the uncertainty in the rotation period, allowing the mass to be more accurately obtained. We find candidate rotation periods for 17 out of 35 TESS Objects of Interest (TOI) hosting <3 R_Earth planets as part of the Magellan-TESS Survey, which is the first-ever statistically robust study of exoplanet masses and radii across the photo-evaporation gap. Seven periods are 3+ sigma detections, two are 1.5+ sigma, and 8 show plausible variability but th…
Possible inaccuracies in the determination of periods from short-term time series caused by disregard of the real course of light curves and instrumental trends are documented on the example of the period analysis of simulated TESS-like light curve by notorious Lomb-Scargle method.
We present the photometric data from TESS for two known ZZ Ceti stars, PG 1541+651 and BPM 31594. Before TESS, both objects only had observations from short runs from ground-based facilities, with three and one period detected, respectively. The TESS data allowed the detection of multiple periodicities, 12 for PG 1541$+$651, and six for BPM 31594, which enables us to perform a detailed asteroseismological study. For both objects we found a representative asteroseismic model with canonical stellar mass ~ 0.61 Msun and thick hydrogen envelopes, thicker than 10^(-5.3) M_*. The detection of triple…
MaGiV-1 is a candidate triple ellipsoidal star system in Vulpecula at coordinates RA(J2000) 19:52:19.13 DEC(J2000) +23:29:59.7 classified as ELL+ELL, number 2344411 in AAVSO VSX database. Through photometry from the TESS Space Telescope, two significant periods describing the orbital times of the components were identified using the Fourier transform. The analysis led to determining P(A-BC) = 4.269d the orbital period of A-BC pair, the primary component with the secondary component described by another pair, and P(BC) = 0.610d the orbital period of B-C pair, the inner ellipsoidal system. Howev…

$\upsilon$ Sgr is the prototype of four known hydrogen-deficient binary (HdB) systems. These are characterised by a hydrogen-deficient A-type primary, variable hydrogen emission lines, and a normally unseen secondary presumed to be an upper main-sequence star. Orbital periods range from tens of days to 360 d. TESS observations of all four HdBs show a flux variation with well-defined period in the range 0.5 -- 0.9 d, too short to be associated with the supergiant primary, and more likely to be the rotation period of the secondary and associated with a chemical surface asymmetry or a low-order n…
Context: the theory of stellar evolution presents shortcomings when confronted with asteroseismic probes of interior physical properties. The differences between observations and theory are often great because stellar models have mainly been calibrated from observables connected to the surface of stars. Period-spacing patterns caused by gravity modes are a particularly powerful asteroseismic tool that are useful for probing the near-core rotation and mixing of chemical elements in main-sequence stars with convective cores. Aims: we aim to compose a catalog of intermediate-mass stars in the TES…
I analyzed Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observations of the 2020 superoutburst of the SU~UMa-type dwarf nova V844 Her. This object showed "textbook" superhump stages A, B and C confirmed by modern satellite observations. The resultant figure can be used for an illustration of the concept of superhump stages under the Creative Commons (CC-BY-NC) licence. During the growing phase of superhumps, the period was initially close to, but slightly longer than the orbital period. Observers should pay attention to the presence of such a phenomenon not to confuse the phenomenon with early…
There have been relatively few published long-duration, uninterrupted light curves of magnetic cataclysmic variable stars in which the accreting white dwarf's rotational frequency is slightly desynchronized from the binary orbital frequency (asynchronous polars). We report Kepler K2 and TESS observations of two such systems. The first, SDSS J084617.11+245344.1, was observed by the Kepler spacecraft for 80 days during Campaign 16 of the K2 mission, and we identify it as a new asynchronous polar with a likely 4.64 h orbital period. This is significantly longer than any other asynchronous polar, …
HS 2325+8205 is a long-period eclipsing dwarf nova with an orbital period above the period gap (Porb>3 h) and is reported to be a Z Cam-type dwarf nova. Based on the photometry of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the light variation and the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPOs) of HS 2325+8205 are studied. Using Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP), and sine fitting methods, we find for the first time that there is a QPOs of ~ 2160s in the long outburst top light curves of HS 2325+8205. Moreover, we find that the oscillation intensity of the QPOs of H…
We report the discovery and complex analyses of the first two compact hierarchical triple star systems discovered with TESS in or near its southern continuous viewing zone during Year 1. Both TICs 167692429 and 220397947 were previously unknown eclipsing binaries, and the presence of a third companion star was inferred from eclipse timing variations exhibiting signatures of strong 3rd-body perturbations and, in the first system, also from eclipse depth variations. We carried out comprehensive analyses, including the simultaneous photodynamical modelling of TESS and archival ground-based WASP l…
We report the discovery in $TESS$ Sectors 3 and 4 of a compact triply eclipsing triple star system. TIC 209409435 is a previously unknown eclipsing binary with a period of 5.717 days, and the presence of a third star in an outer eccentric orbit of 121.872 day period was found from two sets of third-body eclipses and from eclipse timing variations. The latter exhibit signatures of strong 3rd-body perturbations. After the discovery, we obtained follow-up ground-based photometric observations of several binary eclipses as well as another of the third-body eclipses. We carried out comprehensive an…

Context. Gamma Doradus (hereafter $γ$~Dor) stars are gravity-mode pulsators whose periods carry information about the internal structure of the star. These periods are especially sensitive to the internal rotation and chemical mixing, two processes that are currently not well constrained in the theory of stellar evolution. Aims. We aim to identify the pulsation modes and deduce the internal rotation and buoyancy travel time for 106 $γ$ Dor stars observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission in its southern continuous viewing zone (hereafter S-CVZ). We rely on 140 previou…
We used a convolutional neural network to infer stellar rotation periods from a set of synthetic light curves simulated with realistic spot evolution patterns. We convolved these simulated light curves with real TESS light curves containing minimal intrinsic astrophysical variability to allow the network to learn TESS systematics and estimate rotation periods despite them. In addition to periods, we predict uncertainties via heteroskedastic regression to estimate the credibility of the period predictions. In the most credible half of the test data, we recover 10%-accurate periods for 46% of th…
We present the catalogue of the TESS targets showing multiple eclipses. It means that in all of these stars we detected two sets of eclipses, for which their two distinctive periods can be derived. These multiple stellar systems can be either doubly eclipsing quadruples, or triple-star coplanar systems showing besides the inner eclipses also the eclipses on the outer orbit. In total, 116 systems were found as doubly eclipsing, while 25 stars were identified as triply eclipsing triples. Several confirmed blends of two close sources were not included into our analysis. All these systems were ide…
We report the discovery of a transiting planet first identified as a candidate in Sector 1 of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and then confirmed with precision radial velocities. HD1397b has a mass of ${\rm M_P}$ = $0.335_{-0.018}^{+0.018}$ ${\rm M_J}$, a radius of ${\rm R_P}$ = $1.021_{-0.014}^{+0.015}$ ${\rm M_J}$, and orbits its bright host star ($V = 7.8$ mag) with an orbital period of $11.53508 \pm 0.00057 $ d, on a moderately eccentric orbit ($e$ = 0.210 $\pm$ 0.038). With a mass of ${\rm M}_{\star}$ = $1.284_{-0.016}^{+0.020}$ ${\rm M}_{J}$, a radius of ${\rm R}_{\star…
Mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars are late-B upper main sequence chemically peculiar stars distinguished by large overabundances of heavy elements, slow rotation, and frequent membership in close binary systems. These stars lack strong magnetic fields typical of magnetic Bp stars but occasionally exhibit non-uniform surface distributions of chemical elements. The physical origin and the extent of this spot formation phenomenon remains unknown. Here we use 2-min cadence light curves of 64 HgMn stars observed by the TESS satellite during the first two years of its operation to investigate the incid…
Pulsating hydrogen-deficient white dwarfs and pre-white dwarfs observed with TESS VI. Asteroseismology of the GW Vir-type central star of the Planetary Nebula NGC 246
Stellar rotation is a fundamental observable that drives different aspects of stellar and planetary evolution. In this work, we present an unprecedented manifold analysis of 160 B-type stars with light curves collected by the TESS space mission using three different procedures (Fast Fourier Transform, Lomb-Scargle, and wavelet techniques), accompanied by rigorous visual inspection in the search for rotation periodicities. This effort provides rotational periodicities for 6 new TESS B-type stars and confirmed periodicities for 22 targets with rotation periods previously listed in the literature…

TIC137608661/TYC4544-2658-1/FBS0938+788 is a new sdBV+dM reflection-effect binary discovered by the TESS space mission with an orbital period of 7.21 hours. In addition to the orbital frequency and its harmonics, the Fourier transform of TIC137608661 shows many g-mode pulsation frequencies from the sdB star. The amplitude spectrum is particularly simple to interpret as we immediately see several rotational triplets of equally spaced frequencies. The central frequencies of these triplets are equally spaced in period with a mean period spacing of 270.12 s, corresponding to consecutive l=1 modes.…
