We report the discovery and complex analyses of the first two compact hierarchical triple star systems discovered with TESS in or near its southern continuous viewing zone during Year 1. Both TICs 167692429 and 220397947 were previously unknown eclipsing binaries, and the presence of a third companion star was inferred from eclipse timing variations exhibiting signatures of strong 3rd-body perturbations and, in the first system, also from eclipse depth variations. We carried out comprehensive analyses, including the simultaneous photodynamical modelling of TESS and archival ground-based WASP lightcurves, as well as eclipse timing variation curves. Also, for the first time, we included in the simultaneous fits multiple star spectral energy distribution data and theoretical PARSEC stellar isochrones, taking into account Gaia DR2 parallaxes and cataloged metallicities. We find that both systems have twin F-star binaries and a lower mass tertiary star. In the TIC 167692429 system the inner binary is moderately inclined ($i_{mut}=27^o$) with respect to the outer orbit, and the binary vs. outer (triple) orbital periods are 10.3 vs. 331 days, respectively. The mutually inclined orbits cause a driven precession of the binary orbital plane which leads to the disappearance of binary eclipses for long intervals. In the case of TIC 220397947 the two orbital planes are more nearly aligned and the inner vs. outer orbital periods are 3.5 and 77 days, respectively. In the absence of radial velocity observations, we were unable to calculate highly accurate masses and ages for the two systems. According to stellar isochrones TIC 167692429 might be either a pre-main sequence or an older post-MS system. In the case of TIC 220397947 our solution prefers a young, pre-MS scenario.
In this work we report the discovery and analysis of three new triply eclipsing triple star systems found with the TESS mission during its observations of the northern skies: TICs 193993801, 388459317, and 52041148. We utilized the TESS precision photometry of the binary eclipses and third-body eclipsing events, ground-based archival and follow-up photometric data, eclipse timing variations, archival spectral energy distributions, as well as theoretical evolution tracks in a joint photodynamical analysis to deduce the system masses and orbital parameters of both the inner and outer orbits. We report the discovery in $TESS$ Sectors 3 and 4 of a compact triply eclipsing triple star system. TIC 209409435 is a previously unknown eclipsing binary with a period of 5.717 days, and the presence of a third star in an outer eccentric orbit of 121.872 day period was found from two sets of third-body eclipses and from eclipse timing variations. The latter exhibit signatures of strong 3rd-body perturbations. After the discovery, we obtained follow-up ground-based photometric observations of several binary eclipses as well as another of the third-body eclipses. We carried out comprehensive an…
MaGiV-1 is a candidate triple ellipsoidal star system in Vulpecula at coordinates RA(J2000) 19:52:19.13 DEC(J2000) +23:29:59.7 classified as ELL+ELL, number 2344411 in AAVSO VSX database. Through photometry from the TESS Space Telescope, two significant periods describing the orbital times of the components were identified using the Fourier transform. The analysis led to determining P(A-BC) = 4.269d the orbital period of A-BC pair, the primary component with the secondary component described by another pair, and P(BC) = 0.610d the orbital period of B-C pair, the inner ellipsoidal system. Howev…
HD 54236 is a nearby, wide common-proper-motion visual pair that has been previously identified as likely being very young by virtue of strong X-ray emission and lithium absorption. Here we report the discovery that the brighter member of the wide pair, HD~54236A, is itself an eclipsing binary (EB), comprising two near-equal solar-mass stars on a 2.4 d orbit. It represents a potentially valuable opportunity to expand the number of benchmark-grade EBs at young stellar ages. Using new observations of Ca2H&K emission and lithium absorption in the wide K-dwarf companion, HD 54236B, we obtain a rob…
In this work we report the discovery and analysis of six new compact triply eclipsing triple star systems found with the TESS mission: TICs 37743815, 42565581, 54060695, 178010808, 242132789, and 456194776. All of these exhibit distinct third body eclipses where the inner eclipsing binary (EB) occults the third (`tertiary') star, or vice versa. We utilized the TESS photometry, archival photometric data, and available archival spectral energy distribution curves (SED) to solve for the properties of all three stars, as well as many of the orbital elements. We describe in detail our SED fits, sea…
We report the discovery and analysis of a massive, compact, hierarchical triple system (TIC 470710327) initially identified by citizen scientists in data obtained by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Spectroscopic follow-up observations obtained with the HERMES spectrograph, combined with eclipse timing variations (ETVs), confirm that the system is comprised of three OB stars, with a compact 1.10 d eclipsing binary and a non-eclipsing tertiary on a 52.04 d orbit. Dynamical modelling of the system (from radial velocity and ETVs) reveal a rare configuration wherein the tertiar…
Aims. We introduce a novel way to identify new compact hierarchical triple stars by exploiting the huge potential of Gaia DR3 and also its future data releases. We aim to increase the current number of compact hierarchical triples significantly. Methods. We utilize several eclipsing binary catalogs from different sky surveys totaling more than 1 million targets for which we search for Gaia DR3 Non-single Star orbital solutions with periods substantially longer than the eclipsing periods of the binaries. Those solutions in most cases should belong to outer orbits of tertiary stars in those syst…
We present the catalogue of the TESS targets showing multiple eclipses. It means that in all of these stars we detected two sets of eclipses, for which their two distinctive periods can be derived. These multiple stellar systems can be either doubly eclipsing quadruples, or triple-star coplanar systems showing besides the inner eclipses also the eclipses on the outer orbit. In total, 116 systems were found as doubly eclipsing, while 25 stars were identified as triply eclipsing triples. Several confirmed blends of two close sources were not included into our analysis. All these systems were ide…
In this work we report the independent discovery and analysis of nine new compact triply eclipsing triple star systems found with the TESS mission: TICs 47151245, 81525800, 99013269, 229785001, 276162169, 280883908, 294803663, 332521671, and 356324779. Each of these nine systems exhibits distinct third-body eclipses where the third (`tertiary') star occults the inner eclipsing binary (EB), or vice versa. We utilize a photodynamical analysis of the TESS photometry, archival photometric data, TESS eclipse timing variations of the EBs, available archival spectral energy distribution curves (SED),…
We present the photometric data from TESS for two known ZZ Ceti stars, PG 1541+651 and BPM 31594. Before TESS, both objects only had observations from short runs from ground-based facilities, with three and one period detected, respectively. The TESS data allowed the detection of multiple periodicities, 12 for PG 1541$+$651, and six for BPM 31594, which enables us to perform a detailed asteroseismological study. For both objects we found a representative asteroseismic model with canonical stellar mass ~ 0.61 Msun and thick hydrogen envelopes, thicker than 10^(-5.3) M_*. The detection of triple…
We present TESS photometry of the triple star system V1031 Ori (AB)C, which exhibits short-period oscillations superimposed on an eclipsing light curve. The high-quality data were analyzed in detail and combined with the published spectroscopic measurements to obtain the fundamental stellar parameters of the program target. The masses and radii of the eclipsing pair (AB) were determined to about 0.5 \% and 0.7 \% precision, respectively. We found 23 significant frequencies in two ranges of $<$ 2 day$^{-1}$ and 10.9$-$12.7 day$^{-1}$ from the eclipse-subtracted residuals. Among them, sixteen in…
We present two new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars, TIC 198781841 and TIC 229960986, discovered in TESS photometric data. The periodogram of TIC 198781841 has a large peak at 166.506 d$^{-1}$ (1.93 mHz), with two nearby peaks at 163.412 d$^{-1}$ (1.89 mHz) and 169.600 d$^{-1}$ (1.96 mHz). These correspond to three independent high-overtone pressure modes, with alternating even and odd $\ell$ values. TIC 229960986 has a high-frequency triplet centered at 191.641 d$^{-1}$ (2.218 mHz), with sidebands at 191.164 d$^{-1}$ (2.213 mHz) and 192.119 d$^{-1}$ (2.224 mHz). This pulsation appears to b…
IM Per is a triple star system whose eclipsing pair masses and radii are accurate to within 1 \%. The TESS light curve of the program target exhibits partial eclipses and multiple oscillations with mmag-level amplitudes. It is found that the oscillations affect eclipse timing measurements. Binary modeling of the high-quality TESS data indicates that the eclipsing components of the triple system are twin dwarfs with parameters of $M_2$/$M_1$ = 0.995, $R_2$/$R_1$ = 0.901, and $Δ$($T_{\rm eff,1}$--$T_{\rm eff,2}$) = 12 K in an eccentric ($e$ = 0.049), detached configuration. The third light of $l…
We present the latest results of our ongoing multiplicity study of (Community) TESS Objects of Interest, using astro- and photometric data from the ESA-Gaia mission, to detect stellar companions of these stars and to characterize their properties. In total, 113 binary, 5 hierarchical triple star systems, as well as one quadruple system were detected among 585 targets surveyed, which are all located at distances closer than about 500pc around the Sun. As proven with their accurate Gaia EDR3 astrometry the companions and the targets are located at the same distance and share a common proper moti…
Massive stars briefly pass through the yellow supergiant (YSG) phase as they evolve redward across the HR diagram and expand into red supergiants (RSGs). Higher-mass stars pass through the YSG phase again as they evolve blueward after experiencing significant RSG mass loss. These post-RSG objects offer us a tantalizing glimpse into which stars end their lives as RSGs, and why. One telltale sign of a post-RSG object may be an instability to pulsations, depending on the star's interior structure. Here we report the discovery of five YSGs with pulsation periods faster than 1 day, found in a sampl…
We embarked on a high-resolution optical spectroscopic survey of bright Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) stars around the Northern Ecliptic Pole (NEP), dubbed the Vatican-Potsdam-NEP (VPNEP) survey. Our NEP coverage comprises 1067 stars, of which 352 are bona fide dwarf stars and 715 are giant stars, all cooler than spectral type F0 and brighter than V=8. m 5. Our aim is to characterize these stars for the benefit of future studies in the community. We analyzed the spectra via comparisons with synthetic spectra. Particular line profiles were analyzed by means of eigen-profiles, equ…
TIC137608661/TYC4544-2658-1/FBS0938+788 is a new sdBV+dM reflection-effect binary discovered by the TESS space mission with an orbital period of 7.21 hours. In addition to the orbital frequency and its harmonics, the Fourier transform of TIC137608661 shows many g-mode pulsation frequencies from the sdB star. The amplitude spectrum is particularly simple to interpret as we immediately see several rotational triplets of equally spaced frequencies. The central frequencies of these triplets are equally spaced in period with a mean period spacing of 270.12 s, corresponding to consecutive l=1 modes.…
Aims: We investigate the photometric properties of the M7.5 equal-mass binary VHS J1256-1257AB, which, combined with the late-L dwarf VHS J1256-1257 b, forms one of the few young triple systems of ultra-cool dwarfs currently known. Methods: We analyzed two-minute TESS and two-second Spitzer archival data with total durations of about 25 days and 36 hours, respectively. Typical precision in the data is $\pm$1.5 % for TESS and $\pm$0.1 % (in 1 minute) for Spitzer. Results: The optical and infrared light curves periodically exhibit epochs of quasi-sinusoidal modulation followed by epochs of stoch…

We present a multi-instrument analysis of the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD 42659. We have obtained $B$ photometric data for this star and use these data, in conjunction with TESS observations, to analyse the high-frequency pulsation in detail. We find a triplet which is split by the rotation frequency of the star ($ν_{\rm rot}=0.3756$ d$^{-1}$; $P_{\rm rot}=2.66$ d) and present both distorted dipole and distorted quadrupole mode models. We show that the pulsation frequency, $150.9898$ d$^{-1}$ ($P_{\rm puls}=9.54$ min) is greater than the acoustic cutoff frequency. We utilise 27 high-…

We report the discovery of a compact triply eclipsing triple star system in the southern continuous viewing zone of the TESS space telescope. TIC 278825952 is a previously unstudied, circular eclipsing binary with a period of 4.781 days with a tertiary component in a wider, circular orbit of 235.55 days period that was found from three sets of third-body eclipses and from light travel-time effect dominated eclipse timing variations. We performed a joint photodynamical analysis of the eclipse timing variation curves, photometric data, and the spectral energy distribution, coupled with the use o…
The {\sl TESS} space mission has recently demonstrated its great potential to discover new pulsating white dwarf and pre-white dwarf stars, and to detect periodicities with high precision in already known white-dwarf pulsators. We report the discovery of two new pulsating He-rich atmosphere white dwarfs (DBVs) and present a detailed asteroseismological analysis of three already known DBV stars employing observations collected by the {\sl TESS} mission along with ground-based data. We extracted frequencies from the {\sl TESS} light curves of these DBV stars using a standard pre-whitening proced…
V455 Aur is a detached eclipsing binary containing two F-stars in a 3.15-d orbit with a small eccentricity. Its eclipses were discovered in data from the Hipparcos satellite and a spectroscopic orbit was obtained by Griffin (2001, 2013). Griffin found a long-term variation of the systemic velocity of the eclipsing system due to a third body in a highly eccentric orbit (e = 0.73) with a period of 4200 d. We have used these data, the light curve of V455 Aur from the TESS satellite, and the Gaia EDR3 parallax to determine the physical properties of the components of the system to high precision. …
We present an analysis of a newly discovered 2+1+1 quadruple system with TESS containing an unresolved eclipsing binary (EB) as part of TIC 121088960 and a close neighbor TIC 121088959. The EB consists of two very low-mass M dwarfs in a highly-eccentric ($e$ = 0.709) short-period ($P$ = 3.04358 d) orbit. Given the large pixel size of TESS and the small separation (3.9$"$) between TIC 121088959 and TIC 121088960, we used light centroid analysis of the difference image between in-eclipse and out-of-eclipse data to show that the EB likely resides in TIC 121088960, but contributes only $\sim$10% o…
We report the results of the photodynamical analyses of four compact, tight triple stellar systems, KICs 6964043, 5653126, 5731312, 8023317, based largely on $Kepler$ and $TESS$ data. All systems display remarkable eclipse timing and eclipse depth variations, the latter implying a non-aligned outer orbit. Moreover, KIC 6964043 is also a triply eclipsing system. We combined photometry, ETV curves, and archival spectral energy distribution data to obtain the astrophysical parameters of the constituent stars and the orbital elements with substantial precision. KICs 6964043 and 5653126 were found …
We identify Gaia0007-1605AC as the first inner brown dwarf-white dwarf binary of a hierarchical triple system in which the outer component is another white dwarf (Gaia0007-1605B). From optical/near-infrared spectroscopy obtained at the Very Large Telescope with the X-Shooter instrument and/or from Gaia photometry plus SED fitting, we determine the effective temperatures and masses of the two white dwarfs (12018+-68 K, 0.54+-0.01 Msun for Gaia0007-1605A and 4445+-116 K, 0.56+-0.05 Msun for Gaia0007-1605B) and the effective temperature of the brown dwarf (1850+-50 K; corresponding to a spectral …
Exoplanet searches through space-based photometric time series have shown to be very efficient in recent years. However, follow-up efforts on the detected planet candidates have been demonstrated to be critical to uncover the true nature of the transiting objects. In this paper we show a detailed analysis of one of those false positives hidden as planetary signals. In this case, the candidate KOI-3886.01 showed clear evidence of a planetary nature from various techniques. Indeed, the properties of the fake planet set it among the most interesting and promising for the study of planetary evolut…
The CoRoT and Kepler satellites were the first space platforms designed to perform high-precision photometry for a large number of stars. Multiple systems display a wide variety of photometric variability, making them natural benefactors of these missions. I review the work arising from CoRoT and Kepler observations of multiple systems, with particular emphasis on eclipsing binaries containing giant stars, pulsators, triple eclipses and/or low-mass stars. Many more results remain untapped in the data archives of these missions, and the future holds the promise of K2, TESS and PLATO.
We present a study of flare rates, rotation periods, and spectroscopic activity indicators of 125 single stars within 15 parsecs and with masses between 0.1$-$0.3 $M_\odot$ observed during the first year of the TESS mission, with the goal of elucidating the relationship between these various magnetically connected phenomena. We gathered multi-epoch high resolution spectra of each target and we measured equivalent widths of the activity indicators Helium I D$_3$, $Hα$, and the Calcium infrared triplet line at 8542.09 angstroms. We present 18 new rotation periods from MEarth photometry and 19 ne…

TIC 470710327, a massive compact hierarchical triple-star system, was recently identified by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). TIC 470710327 is comprised of a compact (1.10 d) circular eclipsing binary, with total mass $\approx 10.9-13.2\ \rm{M_{\odot}}$, and a more massive ($\approx 14-17\ \rm{M_{\odot}}$) eccentric non-eclipsing tertiary in a $52.04$ d orbit. Here we present a progenitor scenario for TIC 470710327 in which '2+2' quadruple dynamics result in Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai (ZLK) resonances that lead to a contact phase of the more massive binary. In this scenario, the tw…

Context. Unambiguous examples of the influence of tides on self-excited, free stellar pulsations have recently been observationally detected in space-based photometric data. Aims. We aim to investigate U Gru and contextualise it within the growing class of tidally influenced pulsators. Initial analysis of U Gru revealed frequencies spaced by the orbital frequency that are difficult to explain by currently proposed tidal mechanisms. Methods. We re-investigate the TESS photometry of U Gru alongside new uves spectroscopy. We analyse the uves spectroscopy with least-squares deconvolution and spect…
