Supermassive black holes (BHs) and their host galaxies are interlinked by virtue of feedbacks and are thought to be co-eval across the Hubble time. This relation is highlighted by an approximate proportionality between the BH mass $M_\bullet$ and the mass of a stellar bulge $M_\ast$ of the host galaxy. However, a large spread of the ratio $M_\bullet/M_\ast$ and a considerable excess of BH mass at redshifts $z\sim8$, indicate that the coevolution of central massive BHs and stellar populations in host galaxies may have experienced variations in its intensity. These issues require a robust determination of the relevant masses (BH, stars and gas), which is difficult in the case of distant high-redshift galaxies that are unresolved. In this paper, we seek to identify spectral diagnostics that may tell us about the relative masses of the BH, the gas mass and stellar mass. We consider general features of SEDs of galaxies that harbour growing massive BHs, forming stars and interstellar/circumgalactic gas. We focus on observational manifestations of possible predominances or intermittent variations in evolutionary episodes of growing massive BHs and forming stellar populations. We consider simplified scenarios for star formation and massive BHs growth, and simple models for chemical composition of gas, for dust free gas as well as for gas with dust mass fraction of $1/3$ of the metal content. We argue that wideband multi-frequency observations (X-ray to submillimeter) of the composite emission spectra of growing BH, stellar population and nebular emission of interstellar gas are sufficient to infer their masses.
We present results of a multi-band Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) and nebular emission line analysis of a sample of 1147 spectroscopically identified dusty star-forming galaxies at 0.49 < z < 2.24 from Herschel/SPIRE and HST/WFC3 grism observations in the five CANDELS fields: AEGIS, GOODS-N, GOODS-S, COSMOS, and UDS. We use the spectroscopic redshifts measured from nebular lines to construct the SEDs of galaxies from the optical to the infrared using HST and Herschel photometry. We further utilize the 3D-HST grism Ha line flux measurements to measure the nebular star-formation rates after …
Accretion states, which are universally observed in stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries, are also anticipated in active galactic nuclei (AGN). This is the case at low luminosities, when the jet-corona coupling dominates the energy output in both populations. Previous attempts to extend this framework to a wider AGN population have been extremely challenging due to heavy hydrogen absorption of the accretion disc continuum and starlight contamination from the host galaxies. We present the luminosity-excitation diagram (LED), based on the [OIV]$_{25.9μm}$ and [NeII]$_{12.8μm}$ mid-infrared…
We present Lya and UV-nebular emission line properties of bright Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=6-7 with a luminosity of log L_Lya/[erg s-1] = 43-44 identified in the 21-deg2 area of the SILVERRUSH early sample developed with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey data. Our optical spectroscopy newly confirm 21 bright LAEs with clear Lya emission, and contribute to make a spectroscopic sample of 96 LAEs at z=6-7 in SILVERRUSH. From the spectroscopic sample, we select 7 remarkable LAEs as bright as Himiko and CR7 objects, and perform deep Keck/MOSFIRE and Subaru/nuMOIRCS near-infrared spectroscopy…
We use a sample of 149 spectroscopically confirmed UV-selected galaxies at $z\sim 2$ to investigate the relative dust attenuation of the stellar continuum and the nebular emission lines. For each galaxy in the sample, at least one rest-frame optical emission line (H$α$/[NII]$\lambda6583$ or [OIII]$\lambda5007$) measurement has been taken from the litterature, and 41 galaxies have additional Spitzer/MIPS 24$μ$m observations that are used to infer infrared luminosities. We use a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code that predicts nebular line strengths when fitting the stellar populati…

Infrared and nebular lines provide some of our best probes of the physics regulating the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) at high-redshift. However, interpreting the physical conditions of high-redshift galaxies directly from emission lines remains complicated due to inhomogeneities in temperature, density, metallicity, ionisation parameter, and spectral hardness. We present a new suite of cosmological, radiation-hydrodynamics simulations, each centred on a massive Lyman-break galaxy that resolves such properties in an inhomogeneous ISM. Many of the simulated systems exhibit transie…

We present mapping, profiles and photometry for 24 planetary nebulae (PNe) detected in the GLIMPSE 3D mid-infrared (MIR) survey of the Galactic plane. The PNe show many of the properties observed in previous studies of these sources, including evidence for longer wave emission from outside of the ionised zones, a likely consequence of emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) within the nebular photo-dissociation regimes (PDRs). We also note variations in 5.8/4.5 and 8.0/4.5 microns flux ratios with distance from the nuclei; present evidence for enhanced MIR emission in the halos o…
We present imaging and spectroscopy of NGC 40 acquired using the Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer), and the Infrared Space observatory (ISO). These are used to investigate the nature of emission from the central nebular shell, from the nebular halo, and from the associated circumnebular rings. It is pointed out that a variety of mechanisms may contribute to the mid-infrared (MIR) fluxes, and there is evidence for a cool dust continuum, strong ionic transitions, and appreciable emission by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Prior observations at shorter wavelengths also indicate the prese…

We provide a new method to derive heavy element abundances based on the unique suite of nebular lines in the mid- to far-infrared (IR) range. Using grids of photo-ionisation models that cover a wide range in O/H and N/O abundances, and ionisation parameter, our code HII-Chi-mistry-IR (HCm-IR) provides model-based abundances based on extinction free and temperature insensitive tracers, two significant advantages over optical diagnostics. The code is probed using a sample of 56 galaxies observed with $Spitzer$ and $Herschel$ covering a wide range in metallicity, $7.2 \lesssim 12+\log(O/H) \lesss…
As a science verification study of the newly released AKARI/FIS Faint Source Catalog ver.1, this paper discusses the different levels of dust attenuation toward stellar light and nebular emission lines within local star-forming galaxies at 0.02<z<0.10. By constructing an updated version of the AKARI-SDSS-GALEX matched galaxy catalog (with >2,000 sources), we compare the dust attenuation levels toward stellar light (from L(IR)/L(UV) ratio) and nebular emission lines (from H-alpha/H-beta ratio). We find that there is a clear trend that more massive galaxies tend to have higher "extra" attenuatio…
Future and on-going infrared and radio observatories such as JWST, METIS or ALMA will increase the amount of rest-frame IR spectroscopic data for galaxies by several orders of magnitude. While studies of the chemical composition of the ISM based on optical observations have been widely spread over decades for SFG and, more recently, for AGN, similar studies need to be performed using IR data. This regime can be especially useful in the case of AGN given that it is less affected by temperature and dust extinction, traces higher ionic species and can also provide robust estimations of the chemic…
To investigate the ingredients, which allow star-forming galaxies to present Lyalpha line in emission, we studied the kinematics and gas phase metallicity (Z) of the interstellar medium. We used multi-object NIR spectroscopy with Magellan/MMIRS to study nebular emission from z=2-3 star-forming galaxies discovered in 3 MUSYC fields. We detected emission lines from four active galactic nuclei and 13 high-z star-forming galaxies, including Halpha lines down to a flux of 4.E-17 erg/sec/cm^2. This yielded 7 new redshifts. The most common emission line detected is [OIII]5007, which is sensitive to Z…
The Near InfraRed Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) includes a novel micro shutter array (MSA) to perform multi object spectroscopy. While the MSA is mainly targeting galaxies across a larger field, it can also be used for studying star formation in crowded fields. Crowded star formation regions typically feature strong nebular emission, both in emission lines and continuum. In this work, nebular emission is referred to as nebular contamination. Nebular contamination can obscure the light from the stars, making it more challenging to obtain high quality spectra. T…
The presence of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses up to $M_\bullet\sim10^9M_\odot$ at redshifts $z\simeq7.5$ suggests that their seeds may have started to grow long before the reionization in ambient medium with pristine chemical composition. During their latest 500Myr episode of growing from $z\geq10$ to $z\sim7$ the black holes shine as luminous as $10^{11}\hbox{--}10^{12}L_\odot$, with a cumulative spectrum consisting of the intrinsic continuum from hot accretion disk, nebular hydrogen and helium spectral lines and free-free continuum from gas of host halos. Here we address the q…

We have identified a population of passive spiral galaxies from photometry and integral field spectroscopy. We selected z<0.035 spiral galaxies that have WISE colours consistent with little mid-infrared emission from warm dust. Matched aperture photometry of 51 spiral galaxies in ultraviolet, optical and mid-infrared show these galaxies have colours consistent with passive galaxies. Six galaxies form a spectroscopic pilot study and were observed using the Wide-Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) to check for signs of nebular emission from star formation. We see no evidence of substantial nebular emissi…
Galaxy surveys targeting emission lines are characterising the evolution of star-forming galaxies, but there is still little theoretical progress in modelling their physical properties. We predict nebular emission from star-forming galaxies within a cosmological galaxy formation model. Emission lines are computed by combining the semi-analytical model \sag\ with the photoionisation code \mapp. We characterise the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies by relating the ionisation parameter of gas in galaxies to their cold gas metallicity, obtaining a reasonable agreement with the observed \ha, \o…
We have performed very large and high resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulations in order to investigate detectability of nebular lines in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) to optical wavelength range from galaxies at $z > 7$. We find that the expected line fluxes are very well correlated with apparent UV magnitudes. The C IV $1549 \rm Å$ and the C III] $1909 \rm Å$ lines of galaxies brighter than $26~ \rm AB$ are detectable with current facilities such as the VLT/XShooter and the Keck/MOSFIRE. Metal lines such as C IV $1549 \rm Å$, C III] $1909 \rm Å$, [O II] $3727 \rm Å$ and [O III] $495…

We use a sample of 706 galaxies, selected as [OII]$λ$3727 ([OII]) emitters in the Survey for High-$z$ Absorption Red and Dead Sources (SHARDS) on the CANDELS/GOODS-N field, to study the differential attenuation of the nebular emission with respect to the stellar continuum. The sample includes only galaxies with a counterpart in the infrared and $\mathrm{log}_{10}(M_{*}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})$ $>$ 9, over the redshift interval 0.3 $\lesssim$ $z$ $\lesssim$ 1.5. Our methodology consists in the comparison of the star formation rates inferred from [OII] and H$α$ emission lines with a robust quantific…
We present photoionization modeling of galaxy populations at $z\sim0$, $2$, and $> 6$ to bridge optical and far-infrared (FIR) emission-line diagrams. We collect galaxies with measurements of optical and/or FIR ([O III] 88 $\mathrm{μm}$ and [C II] 158 $\mathrm{μm}$) emission line fluxes and plot them on the [O III]$\lambda5007/\mathrm{Hβ}$--[N II]$\lambda6585/\mathrm{Hα}$ (BPT) and L([O III]88)/SFR--L([C II]158)/SFR diagrams, where SFR is the star-formation rate and L([O III]88) and L([C II]158) are the FIR line luminosities. We aim to explain the galaxy distributions on the two diagrams with …
We present nucleosynthesis predictions (HeCNOCl) from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) models, with diffusive overshooting from all the convective borders, in the metallicity range Z/4 < Z < 2Zsun. They are compared to recent precise nebular abundances in a sample of Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) that is divided among double-dust chemistry (DC) and oxygen-dust chemistry (OC) according to the infrared dust features. Unlike the similar subsample of Galactic carbon-dust chemistry PNe recently analysed by us, here the individual abundance errors, the higher metallicity spread, and the uncertain du…
Pégase.3 is a Fortran 95 code modeling the spectral evolution of galaxies from the far-ultraviolet to submillimeter wavelengths. It also follows the chemical evolution of their stars, gas and dust. For a given scenario (a set of parameters defining the history of mass assembly, the star formation law, the initial mass function...), Pégase.3 consistently computes the following: * the star formation, infall, outflow and supernova rates from 0 to 20 Gyr; * the stellar metallicity, the abundances of main elements in the gas and the composition of dust; * the unattenuated stellar spectral energy di…
Spitzer IRAC observations and stellar photometric catalogs are presented for the Massive Young Star-Forming Complex Study in the Infrared and X-ray (MYStIX). MYStIX is a multiwavelength census of young stellar members of twenty nearby (d < 4 kpc), Galactic, star-forming regions that contain at least one O star. All regions have data available from the Spitzer Space Telescope, consisting of GLIMPSE or other published catalogs for eleven regions and results of our own photometric analysis of archival data for the remaining nine regions. This paper seeks to construct deep and reliable catalogs of…
We present new observations of the nebula around the Magellanic candidate Luminous Blue Variable S61. These comprise high-resolution data acquired with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Atacama Large Millimetre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA), and VISIR at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The nebula was detected only in the radio, up to 17 GHz. The 17 GHz ATCA map, with 0.8 arcsec resolution, allowed a morphological comparison with the H$α$ Hubble Space Telescope image. The radio nebula resembles a spherical shell, as in the optical. The spectral index map indicates that the radio em…
During galaxy-galaxy interactions, massive gas clouds can be injected into the intergalactic medium which in turn become gravitationally bound, collapse and form stars, star clusters or even dwarf galaxies. The objects resulting from this process are both "pristine", as they are forming their first generation of stars, and chemically evolved because the metallicity inherited from their parent galaxies is high. Such characteristics make them particularly interesting laboratories to study star formation. After having investigated their star-forming properties, we use photospheric, nebular and du…
To date, most of the luminous quasars known at $z\sim6$ have been found to be in maximal accretion with the Eddington ratios, $λ_{\rm{Edd}}\sim1$, suggesting enhanced nuclear activities in the early universe. However, this may not be the whole picture of supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth since previous studies have not reached on faint quasars that are more likely to harbor SMBHs with low $λ_{\rm{Edd}}$. To gain a better understanding on the accretion activities in quasars in the early universe, we obtained a deep near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of a quasar, IMS J220417.92+011144.8 (hereafter…
We present a new two-component dust geometry model, the \textit{Chocolate Chip Cookie} model, where the clumpy nebular regions are embedded in a diffuse stellar/ISM disk, like chocolate chips in a cookie. By approximating the binomial distribution of the clumpy nebular regions with a continuous Gaussian distribution and omitting the dust scattering effect, our model solves the dust attenuation process for both the emission lines and stellar continua via analytical approaches. Our Chocolate Chip Cookie model successfully fits the inclination dependence of both the effective dust reddening of th…
We have constructed MOCASSIN photoionization plus dust radiative transfer models for the Crab Nebula core-collapse supernova (CCSN) remnant, using either smooth or clumped mass distributions, in order to determine the chemical composition and masses of the nebular gas and dust. We computed models for several different geometries suggested for the nebular matter distribution but found that the observed gas and dust spectra are relatively insensitive to these geometries, being determined mainly by the spectrum of the pulsar wind nebula which ionizes and heats the nebula. Smooth distribution mode…
We analyze the rest-frame near-UV and optical nebular spectra of three $z > 7$ galaxies from the Early Release Observations taken with the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). These three high-z galaxies show the detection of several strong-emission nebular lines, including the temperature-sensitive [O III] $λ$4363 line, allowing us to directly determine the nebular conditions and abundances for O/H, C/O, and Ne/O. We derive O/H abundances and ionization parameters that are generally consistent with other recent analyses. We analyze the mass-metallicit…
We use a semi-empirical model to reproduce the 0.1-10um spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of 85 luminous quasars. In the model, the continuum emission from the accretion disk as well as the nebular lines are represented by a single empirical template (disk), where differences in the optical spectral index are reproduced by varying the amount of extinction. The near- and mid-infrared emission of the AGN-heated dust is modelled as the combination of two black-bodies (dust). The model fitting shows that the disk and dust components are remarkably uniform among individual quasars, wit…
MYStIX (Massive Young Star-Forming Complex Study in Infrared and Xray) seeks to characterize 20 OB-dominated young clusters and their environs at distances d < 4 kpc using imaging detectors on the Chandra X-ray Observatory, Spitzer Space Telescope, and the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope. The observational goals are to construct catalogs of star-forming complex stellar members with well-defined criteria, and maps of nebular gas (particularly of hot X-ray emitting plasma) and dust. A catalog of MYStIX Probable Complex Members (MPCMs) with several hundred OB stars and > 30, 000 low mass premai…
We present a detailed study of the spatially resolved kinematics, star-formation and stellar mass in a highly amplified galaxy at z=4.92 behind the lensing cluster MS1358+62. We use the observed optical, near- and mid-infrared imaging from HST ACS & NICMOS and Spitzer IRAC to derive the stellar mass and the Gemini/NIFS IFU to investigate the velocity structure of the galaxy from the nebular [OII] emission. Using a detailed gravitational lens model, we account for lensing amplification factor 12.+/-2.0 and find that this intrinsically L* galaxy has a stellar mass of M*=7+/-2x10^8Mo, a dynamical…
The process of massive star ($M\geq8~M_\odot$) formation is still poorly understood. Observations of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) are challenging due to their rarity, short formation timescale, large distances, and high circumstellar extinction. Here, we present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of a population of MYSOs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We took advantage of the spectral resolution and wavelength coverage of X-shooter (300-2500 nm), mounted on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope, to detect characteristic spectral features in a dozen MYSO can…
Mid- and far-infrared (IR) photometric and spectroscopic observations are fundamental to a full understanding of the dust-obscured Universe and the evolution of both star formation and black hole accretion in galaxies. In this work, using the specifications of the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) as a baseline, we investigate the capability to study the dust-obscured Universe of mid- and far-IR photometry at 34 and 70 $μ$m and low-resolution spectroscopy at 17-36 $μ$m using the state-of-the-art Spectro-Photometric Realisations of Infrared-selected Targets at all-…
Infrared Herschel imaging and spectroscopic observations of the nebula M1-67 around the Wolf-Rayet star WR 124 have been obtained along with optical imaging observations. The infrared images reveal a clumpy dusty nebula that extends up to 1 pc. The comparison with the optical images shows that the ionized gas nebula coincides with the dust nebula, the dust and the gas being mixed together. A photodissociation region is revealed from the infrared spectroscopic analysis. The analysis of the infrared spectrum of the nebula, where forbidden emission lines of ionized elements were detected, showed …
Infrared (IR), sub-millimetre (sub-mm) and millimetre (mm) databases contain a huge quantity of high quality data. However, a large part of these data are photometric, and are thought not to be useful to derive a quantitative information on the nebular emission of galaxies. The aim of this project is first to identify galaxies at z > 4-6, and in the epoch of reionization from their sub-mm colours. We also aim at showing that the colours can be used to try and derive physical constraints from photometric bands, when accounting for the contribution from the IR fine structure lines to these photo…
We report on the identification of the old stellar population galaxy candidates at z > 5. We developed a new infrared color selection scheme to isolate galaxies with the strong Balmer breaks at z > 5, and applied it to the ultra-deep and wide infrared survey data from the Spitzer Extended Deep Survey (SEDS) and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey. The eight objects satisfying K - [3.6] > 1.3 and K - [3.6] > 2.4 ([3.6] - [4.5]) + 0.6 are selected in the 0.34 deg^2 SEDS Ultra Deep Survey field. Rich multi-wavelength imaging data from optical to far-infrared are also used to reject blending source…
The excitation of the gas phase of the interstellar medium can be driven by various mechanisms. In galaxies with an active nucleus, such as Seyfert galaxies, both radiative and mechanical energy from the central black hole, or the stars in the disk surrounding it may play a role. We investigate the relative importance and range of influence of the active galactic nucleus for the excitation of ionized and molecular gas in the central kiloparsec of its host galaxy. We present H- and K-band long-slit spectra for a sample of 21 nearby (D <70 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies obtained with the NIRSPEC instrume…
