One of the key challenges in magnetism remains the determination of the nanoscopic magnetization profile within the volume of thick samples, such as permanent ferromagnets. Thanks to the large penetration depth of neutrons, magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a powerful technique to characterize bulk samples. The major challenge regarding magnetic SANS is accessing the real-space magnetization vector field from the reciprocal scattering data. In this letter, a fast iterative algorithm is introduced that allows one to extract the underlying two-dimensional magnetic correlation functions from the scattering patterns. This approach is used here to analyze the magnetic microstructure of Nanoperm, a nanocrystalline alloy which is widely used in power electronics due to its extraordinary soft magnetic properties. It can be shown that the computed correlation functions clearly reflect the projection of the three-dimensional magnetization vector field onto the detector plane, which demonstrates that the used methodology can be applied to probe directly spin-textures within bulk samples with nanometer-resolution.
We present a synchrotron-based X-ray scattering technique which allows disentangling magnetic properties of heterogeneous systems with nanopatterned surfaces. This technique combines the nmrange spatial resolution of surface morphology features provided by Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-ray Scattering and the high sensitivity of Nuclear Resonant Scattering to magnetic order. A single experiment thus allows attributing magnetic properties to structural features of the sample; chemical and structural properties may be correlated analogously. We demonstrate how this technique shows the correlati…
The magnetic properties of carbon nanotube encapsulated nickel nanowires (C.E. nanowires of diameter ~ 10 nm), and its comparison to other forms of Ni are carried out in this work. The saturation magnetization (M_s) and coercivity (H_c) for C.E. nanowires are 1.0 emu/g and 230 Oe. The temperature dependence of coercivity follows T^0.77 dependence indicating a superparamagnetic behavior. The field-cooled and zero-field-cooled plots indicate that the blocking temperature (T_B) ~ 300 K. These altered magnetic properties of C.E. nanowires are mainly due to the nanoscale confinement effect from car…
The strain induced pseudo-magnetic field in supported graphene deposited on top of a nanostructured substrate is investigated by using atomistic simulations. Step, elongated trench, one dimensional barrier, spherical bubbles, Gaussian bump and Gaussian depression are considered as support structures for graphene. From the obtained optimum configurations we found very strong induced pseudo-magnetic fields which can reach up to $\sim$ 1000\,T due to the strain-induced deformations in the supported graphene. Different magnetic confinements with controllable geometries are found by tuning the patt…
Topological magnetic charge Q is a fundamental parameter that describes the magnetic domains and determines their intriguing electromagnetic properties. The ability to switch Q in a controlled way by electrical methods allows for flexible manipulation of electromagnetic behavior in future spintronic devices. Here we report the room-temperature current-controlled topological magnetic transformations between Q = -1 skyrmions and Q = 0 stripes or type-II bubbles in a kagome crystal Fe$_3$Sn$_2$. We show that the reproducible and reversible skyrmion-bubble and skyrmion-stripe transformations can b…
We report an experimental study of the CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposite, a nanostructured material formed by hard (CoFe2O4) and soft (CoFe2) magnetic materials. The precursor material, cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), was prepared using the conventional stoichiometric gel-combustion method. The nanocomposite material was obtained by reducing partially the precursor material using activated charcoal as reducing agent in air and argon atmospheres, at 800 and 900 C respectively. The magnetic hysteresis loops demonstrate that, in general, prepared nanocomposite samples display single magnetic behavior, indica…
The half antivortex, a fundamental topological structure which determines magnetization reversal of submicron magnetic devices with domain walls, has been suggested also to play a crucial role in spin torque induced vortex core reversal in circular disks. Here we report on magnetization reversal in circular disks with nanoholes through consecutive metastable states with half antivortices. In-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance and broadband susceptibility measurements accompanied by micromagnetic simulations reveal that cobalt disks with two and three linearly arranged nanoholes directed at 45…
Atomically thin two dimensional magnets have given rise to emergent phenomena due to magnetic exchange and spin-orbit coupling showing a great promise for realizing ultrathin device structures. In this paper, we critically examine the magnetic properties of 2D FeS$_2$, which has been recently claimed to exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism in the (111) orientation. Our ab initio study based on collinear density functional theory has revealed the ground state as an antiferromagnetic one with an ordering temperature of around 100K along with a signature of spin-phonon coupling, which may trig…
: Understanding the correlations between magnetic nanoparticles is important for nanotechnologies, such as high-density magnetic recording and biomedical applications, where functionalized magnetic particles are used as contrast agents and for drug delivery. The ability to control the magnetic state of individual particles depends on the good knowledge of magnetic correlations between particles when assembled. Inaccessible via standard magnetometry techniques, nanoscale magnetic ordering in self-assemblies of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is here unveiled via x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). M…
In a number of current experiments in the field of spin-caloritronics a temperature gradient across a nanostructured interface is applied and spin-dependent transport phenomena are observed. However, a lack in the interpretation and knowledge let it unclear how the temperature drop across a magnetic nanostructured interface looks like where both phonons and electrons may contribute to thermal transport. We answer this question for the case of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) where the tunneling magneto Seebeck effect occurs. Nevertheless, our results can be extended to other nanostructured int…
We report the results of an experimental study of thermal and magnetic properties of nanostructured ferrimagnetic iron oxide composites with graphene and graphite fillers synthesized via the current activated pressure assisted densification. The thermal conductivity was measured using the laser-flash and transient plane source techniques. It was demonstrated that addition of 5 wt. % of equal mixture of graphene and graphite flakes to the composite results in a factor of x2.6 enhancement of the thermal conductivity without significant degradation of the saturation magnetization. The microscopy …
Patterning nanomagnets in three-dimensions presents a new paradigm in condensed matter physics and allows access to a plethora of fundamental phenomena including robust spin textures, magnetic metamaterials that are home to defects carrying magnetic charge and ultrahigh density devices that store information in three-dimensions. However, the nanostructuring of functional magnetic materials into complex three-dimensional geometries has thus far proven to be a formidable challenge. Here we show magnetic nanowires can be arranged into 3D frustrated magnetic nanowire lattices by using a combinatio…
We study electron transport in nanostructures patterned in bilayer graphene patches grown epitaxially on SiC as a function of doping, magnetic field, and temperature. Away from charge neutrality transport is only weakly modulated by changes in carrier concentration induced by a local side-gate. At low n-type doping close to charge neutrality, electron transport resembles that in exfoliated graphene nanoribbons and is well described by tunnelling of single electrons through a network of Coulomb-blockaded islands. Under the influence of an external magnetic field, Coulomb blockade resonances flu…
Helicity indicates the in-plane magnetic-moment swirling direction of a skyrmionic configuration. The ability to reverse the helicity of a skyrmionic bubble via purely electrical means has been predicted in frustrated magnetic systems, however its experimental observation has remained challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the current-driven helicity reversal of the skyrmionic bubble in a nanostructured frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet. The critical current density required to trigger the helicity reversal is 109 - 1010 A/m2, with a corresponding pulse-width varying from 1 μs to 100 ns. Comp…
We develop a theoretical description of electro-magnon solitons in a coupled ferroelectric-ferromagnetic heterostructure. The solitons are considered in the weakly nonlinear limit as a modulation of plane waves corresponding to two, electric- and magnetic-like branches in the spectrum. Emphasis is put on magnetic-like envelope solitons that can be created by an alternating electric field. It is shown also that the magnetic pulses can be amplified by an electric field with a frequency close to the band edge of the magnetic branch.
The interplay of magnetic energies in a Kondo lattice is the underlying physics of a heavy fermion system. Creating an artificial Kondo lattice system by localizing the moments in an ordered metallic array provides a prototype system to tune and study the energetic interplay while avoiding the complications introduced by random alloying of the material. In this article, we create a Kondo lattice system by fabricating a hexagonally ordered nanostructured array using niobium as the host metal and cobalt as the magnetic constituent. Electrical transport measurements and magnetoresistivity measure…
We report the direct evidence of field-dependent character of the interaction between individual magnetic skyrmions as well as between skyrmions and edges in B20-type FeGe nanostripes observed by means of high resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that above certain critical values of external magnetic field the character of such long-range skyrmion interactions change from attraction to repulsion. Experimentally measured equilibrium inter-skyrmion and skrymion-edge distances as function of applied magnetic field shows quantitative agreement with the results of micro…
We present a perturbative method for calculating the optical Hall conductivity in a tight-binding framework based on the Kubo formalism. The method involves diagonalization only of the Hamiltonian in absence of the magnetic field, and thus avoids the computational problems usually arising due to the huge magnetic unit cells required to maintain translational invariance in presence of a Peierls phase. A recipe for applying the method to numerical calculations of the magneto-optical response is presented. We apply the formalism to the case of ordinary and gapped graphene in a next-nearest neighb…
Magnetization hysteresis loops of tin samples with an inverted opal structure are presented. The sample formed by tin particles with the size of 70 and 128 nm is found to be a type-I superconductor. The tin sample formed by 80 and 42 nm particles demonstrates an analog of intertype superconductivity: features of both type-I and II superconductors are observed on the magnetization isothermal curves. Behaviors of the irreversible and reversible magnetization support coexistence of type-I and II superconducting nanoparticles in this sample.
Zigzag edges of the honeycomb structure of graphene exhibit magnetic polarization making them attractive as building blocks for spintronic devices. Here, we show that devices with zigzag edged triangular antidots perform essential spintronic functionalities, such as spatial spin-splitting or spin filtering of unpolarized incoming currents. Near-perfect performance can be obtained with optimized structures. The device performance is robust against substantial disorder. The gate-voltage dependence of transverse resistance is qualitatively different for spin-polarized and spin-unpolarized devices…
We employ magnetic small-angle neutron scattering to investigate the magnetic interactions in $(Fe_{0.7}Ni_{0.3})_{86}B_{14}$ alloy, a HiB-NANOPERM-type soft magnetic nanocrystalline material, which exhibits an ultrafine microstructure with an average grain size below 10 nm. The neutron data reveal a significant spin-misalignment scattering, which is mainly related to the jump of the longitudinal magnetization at internal particle-matrix interfaces. The field dependence of the neutron data can be well described by the micromagnetic small-angle neutron scattering theory. In particular, the theo…
This paper introduces a new approach for simulating magnetic properties of nanocomposites comprising magnetic particles embedded in a non-magnetic matrix, taking into account the 3D structure of the system in which particles' positions correctly mimic real samples. The proposed approach develops a multistage simulation procedure in which the size and distribution of particles within the hosting matrix is firstly attained by means of the Cell Dynamic System (CDS) model. The 3D structure provided by the CDS step is further employed in a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of zero-field-cooled/field-cool…
We demonstrate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of picoliter-volume solutions with a nanostructured diamond chip. Using optical interferometric lithography, diamond surfaces were nanostructured with dense, high-aspect-ratio nanogratings, enhancing the surface area by more than a factor of 15 over mm^2 regions of the chip. The nanograting sidewalls were doped with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers so that more than 10 million NV centers in a (25 micrometer)^2 laser spot are located close enough to the diamond surface (5 nm) to detect the NMR spectrum of 1 pL of fluid lying within adjac…
A theoretical formalism for the description of the interaction of microwave photons with a thin (compared to the photon wavelength) magnetic metasurface comprised of dipolarly interacting nano-scale magnetic elements is developed. A scattering matrix describing the processes of photon transmission and reflection at the metasurface boundary is derived. As an example of the use of the developed formalism, it is demonstrated, that the introduction of a magnetic metasurface inside a microstrip electromagnetic waveguide quantitatively changes the dispersion relation of the fundamental waveguide mod…

We present a study of the Andreev reflections in superconductor/ferromagnet nanostructured point contacts. The experimental data are analyzed in the frame of a model with two spin-dependent transmission coefficients for the majority and minority charge carriers in the ferromagnet. This model consistently describes the whole set of conductance measurements as a function of voltage, temperature, and magnetic field. The ensemble of our results shows that the degree of spin polarization of the current can be unambiguously determined using Andreev physics.

Magnetic skyrmions have been the subject of extensive experimental studies in ferromagnetic thin films and multilayers, revealing a diversity in their size, stability and internal structure. While the orthodox skyrmion theory focuses on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction (DMI) and neglects higher-order energy terms, it is becoming clear that the full stray field energy needs to be taken into account to understand these recent observations. Here we present a micromagnetic study based on rigorous mathematical analysis which allows to account for the full stray field energy in the thin film an…
Nanostructured permanent magnets are gaining increasing interest and importance for applications such as generators and motors. Thermal management is a key concern since performance of permanent magnets decreases with temperature. We investigated the magnetic and thermal transport properties of rare-earth free nanostructured SrFe12O19 magnets produced by the current activated pressure assisted densification. The synthesized magnets have aligned grains such that their magnetic easy axis is perpendicular to their largest surface area to maximize their magnetic performance. The SrFe12O19 magnets …
We study the ground-state entanglement properties of nanostructured Kondo systems consisting of a pair of impurity spins coupled to a background of confined electrons. The competition between the RKKY-like coupling and the Kondo effect determines the development of quantum correlations between the different parts of the system. A key element is the electronic filling due to confinement. An even electronic filling leads to results similar to those found previously for extended systems, where the properties of the reduced impurity-spin subsystem are uniquely determined by the spin correlation fu…
We report a comprehensive study of the electrical and magneto-transport properties of nanocrystals of La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3 (LCMO) (with size down to 15 nm) and La_0.5Sr_0.5CoO_3 (LSCO) (with size down to 35 nm) in the temperature range 0.3 K to 5 K and magnetic fields upto 14 T. The transport, magnetotransport and non-linear conduction (I-V curves) were analysed using the concept of Spin Polarized Tunnelling in the presence of Coulomb blockade. The activation energy of transport, Δ, was used to estimate the tunnelling distances and the inverse decay length of the tunnelling wave function (χ) an…
The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect at filling factor v = 5/2 has recently come under close scrutiny, as it may possess quasi-particle excitations obeying nonabelian statistics, a property sought for topologically protected quantum operations. Yet, its microscopic origin remains unidentified, and candidate model wave functions include those with undesirable abelian statistics. Here we report direct measurements of the electron spin polarization of the v = 5/2 FQH state using resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We find the system to be fully polarized, which unambiguousl…
We have used soft x-ray photoemission electron microscopy to image the magnetization of single domain La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ nano-islands arranged in geometrically frustrated configurations such as square ice and kagome ice geometries. Upon thermal randomization, ensembles of nano-islands with strong inter-island magnetic coupling relax towards low-energy configurations. Statistical analysis shows that the likelihood of ensembles falling into low-energy configurations depends strongly on the annealing temperature. Annealing to just below the Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic film (…
Coupling between dynamic strain and magnetization in ferromagnetic thin films has attracted special consideration as it presents both intriguing fundamental physics problems and technological importance for potential multi-functional devices and information handling. The dynamic strain can be generated by acoustic waves including bulk, surface or guided waves. In this work, we propose the theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction of pure shear horizontal (SH) wave with a uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo thin film in a delay line configuration fabricated on Quartz ST-90X cut…
We report on the Fe17 high-spin molecular cluster and show that this system is an exemplification of nanostructured dipolar magnetism. Each Fe17 molecule, with spin S=35/2 and axial anisotropy as small as D=-0.02K, is the magnetic unit that can be chemically arranged in different packing crystals whilst preserving both spin ground-state and anisotropy. For every configuration, molecular spins are correlated only by dipolar interactions. The ensuing interplay between dipolar energy and anisotropy gives rise to macroscopic behaviors ranging from superparamagnetism to long-range magnetic order at…
We have studied quantization and confinement effects in nanostructured superconductors. Three different types of nanostructured samples were investigated: individual structures (line, loop, dot), 1-dimensional (1D) clusters of loops and 2D clusters of antidots, and finally large lattices of antidots. Hereby, a crossover from individual elementary "plaquettes", via clusters, to huge arrays of these elements, is realized. The main idea of our study was to vary the boundary conditions for confinement of the superconducting condensate by taking samples of different topology and, through that, modi…
Magnetic charge propagation in bulk frustrated materials has yielded a paradigm-shift in science, allowing the symmetry between electricity and magnetism to be studied. Recent work is now suggesting magnetic charge dynamics upon the spin-ice surface may have important implications in determining the ordering and associated phase space. Here we detail a 3D artificial spin-ice, a 3D nanostructured array of magnetic islands which captures the exact geometry of bulk systems, allowing field-driven dynamics of magnetic charge to be directly visualized upon the surface. Using magnetic microscopy, we …
An analytical formulation to compute a magnetic field generated from an uniformly magnetized cylinder ferromagnet is developed. Exact solutions of the magnetic field generated from the magnetization pointing in an arbitrary direction are derived, which are applicable both inside and outside the ferromagnet. The validities of the present formulas are confirmed by comparing them with demagnetization coefficients estimated in earlier works. The results will be useful for designing practical applications, such as high-density magnetic recording and microwave generators, where nanostructured ferrom…
