DeVos, Kwon, and Oum introduced the concept of branch-depth of matroids as a natural analogue of tree-depth of graphs. They conjectured that a matroid of sufficiently large branch-depth contains the uniform matroid $U_{n,2n}$ or the cycle matroid of a large fan graph as a minor. We prove that matroids with sufficiently large branch-depth either contain the cycle matroid of a large fan graph as a minor or have large branch-width. As a corollary, we prove their conjecture for matroids representable over a fixed finite field and quasi-graphic matroids, where the uniform matroid is not an option.
We prove that, for each nonnegative integer k and each matroid N, if M is a 3-connected matroid containing N as a minor, and the the branch width of M is sufficiently large, then there is a k-element subset X of E(M) such that one of M\X and M/X is 3-connected and contains N as a minor.
For a set of matroids $\mathcal{M}$, let $ex_\mathcal{M}(n)$ be the maximum size of a simple rank-$n$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that, for any finite field $\mathbb{F}$, if $\mathcal{M}$ is a minor-closed class of $\mathbb{F}$-representable matroids of bounded branch-width, then $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} ex_\mathcal{M}(n) / n$ exists and is a rational number, $Δ$. We also show that $ex_\mathcal{M}(n) - Δn$ is periodic when $n$ is sufficiently large and that $ex_\mathcal{M}$ is achieved by a subclass of $\mathcal{M}$ of bounded path-width.
Lattice path matroids form a subclass of transversal matroids and were introduced by Bonin, de Mier and Noy. Transversal matroids are not well-quasi-ordered, even when the branch-width is restricted. Though lattice path matroids are not well-quasi-ordered, we prove that lattice path matroids of bounded branch-width are well-quasi-ordered.
We characterise the following property by six obstructions: given a graphic matroid $M$ and a set $X$ of its elements, when is $M$ the cycle matroid of a graph $G$ such that $X$ is a connected edge set in $G$?
We relate two conjectures that play a central role in the reported proof of Rota's Conjecture. Let $\mathbb F$ be a finite field. The first conjecture states that: the branch-width of any $\mathbb F$-representable $N$-fragile matroid is bounded by a function depending only upon $\mathbb F$ and $N$. The second conjecture states that: if a matroid $M_2$ is obtained from a matroid $M_1$ by relaxing a circuit-hyperplane and both $M_1$ and $M_2$ are $\mathbb F$-representable, then the branch-width of $M_1$ is bounded by a function depending only upon $\mathbb F$. Our main result is that the second …
In this paper we prove two main results about obstruction to graph planarity. One is that, if $G$ is a 3-connected graph with a $K_5$-minor and $T$ is a triangle of $G$, then $G$ has a $K_5$-minor $H$, such that $E(T)\cont E(H)$. Other is that if $G$ is a 3-connected simple non-planar graph not isomorphic to $K_5$ and $e,f\in E(G)$, then $G$ has a minor $H$ such that $e,f\in E(H)$ and, up to isomorphisms, $H$ is one of the four non-isomorphic simple graphs obtained from $K_{3,3}$ by the addiction of \,0, 1 or 2 edges. We generalize this second result to the class of the regular matroids.
Hlineny's Theorem shows that any sentence in the monadic second-order logic of matroids can be tested in polynomial time, when the input is limited to a class of F-representable matroids with bounded branch-width (where F is a finite field). If each matroid in a class can be decomposed by a subcubic tree in such a way that only a bounded amount of information flows across displayed separations, then the class has bounded decomposition-width. We introduce the pigeonhole property for classes of matroids: if every subclass with bounded branch-width also has bounded decomposition-width, then the c…
We introduce a new matroid width parameter based on the operation of matroid amalgamation, which we call amalgam-width. The parameter is linearly related to branch-width on finitely representable matroids (which is not possible for branch-width). In particular, any property expressible in the monadic second order logic can be decided in linear time for matroids with bounded amalgam-width. We also prove that the Tutte polynomial can be computed in polynomial time for matroids with bounded amalgam width.
Given $n$ subspaces of a finite-dimensional vector space over a fixed finite field $\mathbb F$, we wish to find a "branch-decomposition" of these subspaces of width at most $k$ that is a subcubic tree $T$ with $n$ leaves mapped bijectively to the subspaces such that for every edge $e$ of $T$, the sum of subspaces associated to the leaves in one component of $T-e$ and the sum of subspaces associated to the leaves in the other component have the intersection of dimension at most $k$. This problem includes the problems of computing branch-width of $\mathbb F$-represented matroids, rank-width of g…
We apply a recent duality theorem for tangles in abstract separation systems to derive tangle-type duality theorems for width-parameters in graphs and matroids. We further derive a duality theorem for the existence of clusters in large data sets. Our applications to graphs include new, tangle-type, duality theorems for tree-width, path-width, and tree-decompositions of small adhesion. Conversely, we show that carving width is dual to edge-tangles. For matroids we obtain a duality theorem for tree-width. Our results can be used to derive short proofs of all the classical duality theorems for wi…
We give an overview of the Macaulay2 package Matroids, which contains functionality to create and compute with matroids. Examples highlighting the use of all major functions in the package are provided, along with explanations of some of the algorithms. Interesting connections of matroids to various branches and areas are also given.
The model theory based notion of the first order convergence unifies the notions of the left-convergence for dense structures and the Benjamini-Schramm convergence for sparse structures. It is known that every first order convergent sequence of graphs with bounded tree-depth can be represented by an analytic limit object called a limit modeling. We establish the matroid counterpart of this result: every first order convergent sequence of matroids with bounded branch-depth representable over a fixed finite field has a limit modeling, i.e., there exists an infinite matroid with the elements form…
We present a concept called the branch-depth of a connectivity function, that generalizes the tree-depth of graphs. Then we prove two theorems showing that this concept aligns closely with the notions of tree-depth and shrub-depth of graphs as follows. For a graph $G = (V,E)$ and a subset $A $ of $E$ we let $λ_G (A)$ be the number of vertices incident with an edge in $A$ and an edge in $E \setminus A$. For a subset $X$ of $V$, let $ρ_G(X)$ be the rank of the adjacency matrix between $X$ and $V \setminus X$ over the binary field. We prove that a class of graphs has bounded tree-depth if and onl…
We extend the definition of chordal from graphs to clutters. The resulting family generalizes both chordal graphs and matroids, and obeys many of the same algebraic and geometric properties. Specifically, the independence complex of a chordal clutter is shellable, hence sequentially Cohen-Macaulay; and the circuit ideal of a certain complement to such a clutter has a linear resolution. Minimal non-chordal clutters are also closely related to obstructions to shellability, and we give some general families of such obstructions, together with a classification by computation of all obstructions to…
Fix a matroid N. A matroid M is N-fragile if, for each element e of M, at least one of M\e and M/e has no N-minor. The Bounded Canopy Conjecture is that all GF(q)-representable matroids M that have an N-minor and are N-fragile have branch width bounded by a constant depending only on q and N. A matroid N stabilizes a class of matroids over a field F if, for every matroid M in the class with an N-minor, every F-representation of N extends to at most one F-representation of M. We prove that, if Rota's conjecture is false for GF(q), then either the Bounded Canopy Conjecture is false for GF(q) or …
We provide a doubly exponential upper bound in $p$ on the size of forbidden pivot-minors for symmetric or skew-symmetric matrices over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}$ of linear rank-width at most $p$. As a corollary, we obtain a doubly exponential upper bound in $p$ on the size of forbidden vertex-minors for graphs of linear rank-width at most $p$. This solves an open question raised by Jeong, Kwon, and Oum [Excluded vertex-minors for graphs of linear rank-width at most $k$. European J. Combin., 41:242--257, 2014]. We also give a doubly exponential upper bound in $p$ on the size of forbidden…
Over the last years the vertex enumeration problem of polyhedra has seen a revival in the study of metabolic networks, which increased the demand for efficient vertex enumeration algorithms for high-dimensional polyhedra given by inequalities. It is a famous and long standing open question in polyhedral theory and computational geometry whether the vertices of a polytope (bounded polyhedron), described by a set of linear constraints, can be enumerated in total polynomial time. In this paper we apply the concept of branch-decomposition to the vertex enumeration problem of polyhedra $P = \{x : A…
We prove that every infinite sequence of skew-symmetric or symmetric matrices M_1, M_2, ... over a fixed finite field must have a pair M_i, M_j (i<j) such that M_i is isomorphic to a principal submatrix of the Schur complement of a nonsingular principal submatrix in M_j, if those matrices have bounded rank-width. This generalizes three theorems on well-quasi-ordering of graphs or matroids admitting good tree-like decompositions; (1) Robertson and Seymour's theorem for graphs of bounded tree-width, (2) Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle's theorem for matroids representable over a fixed finite field h…

The maximum matching width is a width-parameter that is defined on a branch-decomposition over the vertex set of a graph. The size of a maximum matching in the bipartite graph is used as a cut-function. In this paper, we characterize the graphs of maximum matching width at most 2 using the minor obstruction set. Also, we compute the exact value of the maximum matching width of a grid.
Linear rank-width is a linearized variation of rank-width, and it is deeply related to matroid path-width. In this paper, we show that the linear rank-width of every $n$-vertex distance-hereditary graph, equivalently a graph of rank-width at most $1$, can be computed in time $\mathcal{O}(n^2\cdot \log_2 n)$, and a linear layout witnessing the linear rank-width can be computed with the same time complexity. As a corollary, we show that the path-width of every $n$-element matroid of branch-width at most $2$ can be computed in time $\mathcal{O}(n^2\cdot \log_2 n)$, provided that the matroid is gi…
