We study machine learning of phenomenologically relevant properties of string compactifications, which arise in the context of heterotic line bundle models. Both supervised and unsupervised learning are considered. We find that, for a fixed compactification manifold, relatively small neural networks are capable of distinguishing consistent line bundle models with the correct gauge group and the correct chiral asymmetry from random models without these properties. The same distinction can also be achieved in the context of unsupervised learning, using an auto-encoder. Learning non-topological properties, specifically the number of Higgs multiplets, turns out to be more difficult, but is possible using sizeable networks and feature-enhanced data sets.
Numbers and numerical vectors account for a large portion of data. However, recently the amount of string data generated has increased dramatically. Consequently, classifying string data is a common problem in many fields. The most widely used approach to this problem is to convert strings into numerical vectors using string kernels and subsequently apply a support vector machine that works in a numerical vector space. However, this non-one-to-one conversion involves a loss of information and makes it impossible to evaluate, using probability theory, the generalization error of a learning mach…
We explore the use of random forest and gradient boosting, two powerful tree-based machine learning algorithms, for the detection of cosmic strings in maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), through their unique Gott-Kaiser-Stebbins effect on the temperature anisotropies. The information in the maps is compressed into feature vectors before being passed to the learning units. The feature vectors contain various statistical measures of processed CMB maps that boost the cosmic string detectability. Our proposed classifiers, after training, give results improved over or similar to the claim…
We use the machine learning technique to search the polytope which can result in an orientifold Calabi-Yau hypersurface and the "naive Type IIB string vacua". We show that neural networks can be trained to give a high accuracy for classifying the orientifold property and vacua based on the newly generated orientifold Calabi-Yau database with $h^{1,1}(X) \leq 6$ arXiv:2111.03078. This indicates the orientifold symmetry may already be encoded in the polytope structure. In the end, we try to use the trained neural networks model to go beyond the database and predict the orientifold signal of poly…
We utilize machine learning to study the string landscape. Deep data dives and conjecture generation are proposed as useful frameworks for utilizing machine learning in the landscape, and examples of each are presented. A decision tree accurately predicts the number of weak Fano toric threefolds arising from reflexive polytopes, each of which determines a smooth F-theory compactification, and linear regression generates a previously proven conjecture for the gauge group rank in an ensemble of $\frac43 \times 2.96 \times 10^{755}$ F-theory compactifications. Logistic regression generates a new …
We derive an approximate analytic relation between the number of consistent heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications of string theory with the exact charged matter content of the standard model of particle physics and the topological data of the internal manifold: the former scaling exponentially with the number of Kahler parameters. This is done by an estimate of the number of solutions to a set of Diophantine equations representing constraints satisfied by any consistent heterotic string vacuum with three chiral massless families, and has been computationally checked to hold for complete inter…

We review the recent programme of using machine-learning to explore the landscape of mathematical problems. With this paradigm as a model for human intuition - complementary to and in contrast with the more formalistic approach of automated theorem proving - we highlight some experiments on how AI helps with conjecture formulation, pattern recognition and computation.
The Cremmer-Scherk mechanism is generalised in a non-Abelian context. In the presence of the Higgs scalars of the standard model it is argued that fields arising from the low energy effective string action may contribute to the mass generation of the observed vector bosons that mediate the electroweak interactions and that future analyses of experimental data should consider the possibility of string induced radiative corrections to the Weinberg angle coming from physics beyond the standard model.
In this paper we describe ideas about the string landscape, and how to relate it to the physics of the Standard Model of particle physics. First, we give a short status report about heterotic string compactifications. Then we focus on the statistics of D-brane models, on the problem of moduli stabilization, and finally on some attempts to derive a probability wave function in moduli space, which goes beyond the purely statistical count of string vacua.
The discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC supports the hypothesis that the Standard Model provides an effective parameterisation of all subatomic experimental data up to the Planck scale. String theory, which provides a viable perturbative approach to quantum gravity, requires for its consistency the existence of additional gauge symmetries beyond the Standard Model. The construction of heterotic--string models with a viable light $Z^\prime$ is, however, highly constrained. We outline the construction of standard--like heterotic--string models that allow for an additional Abelian gauge symme…
In hidden sector models with an extra U(1) gauge group, new fields can interact with the Standard Model only through gauge kinetic mixing and the Higgs portal. After the U(1) is spontaneously broken, these interactions couple the resultant cosmic strings to Standard Model particles. We calculate the spectrum of radiation emitted by these "dark strings" in the form of Higgs bosons, Z bosons, and Standard Model fermions assuming that string tension is above the TeV scale. We also calculate the scattering cross sections of Standard Model fermions on dark strings due to the Aharonov-Bohm interacti…
N=1, D=4 Superstring possessing $SO(6)\otimes SO(5)$ symmetry action and with the same gauge symmetry obtained from zero mass spectrum of vector meson as well, is constructed from the bosonic string in twenty six dimensions. Without breaking supersymmetry, the gauge symmetry of the model descends to the supersymmetric standard model of the electroweak scale in four dimension. It is proved that there can be three generations in the model
An overview of old and new results in studies of the quasi-realistic free fermionic models is presented, which include the recent discovery of exophobic string vacua and reproduction of the Higgs-matter splitting mechanism in a corresponding orbifold construction.
In this talk we will describe the problems that one encounters when one tries to connect string theory with particle phenomenology. Then, in order to have chiral matter describing quarks and leptons, we introduce the magnetized D branes. Finally, as an explicit example of a string extension of the Standard Model, we will describe the one constructed by Ibanez, Marchesano and Rabadan.
We briefly review attempts to construct string theories that yield the standard model, concentrating on models with a geometric interpretation. Calabi-Yau compactifications are discussed in the context of both the weakly coupled heterotic string and the strongly coupled version, heterotic M-theory. Similarly, we consider orbifold compactifications of weakly coupled heterotic theory and of Type II theories in the presence of D-branes. The latter allows a "bottom-up" construction that so far seems the most natural and direct route to the standard model.
We establish the existence of a static, classically stable string solution in a region of parameters of the generic two-Higgs Standard Model. In an appropriate limit of parameters, the solution reduces to the well-known soliton of the O(3) non-linear sigma model.
We introduce so-called chaotic strings (coupled 1-dimensional noise strings underlying the Parisi-Wu approach of stochastic quantization on a small scale) as a possible amendment of ordinary string theories. These strings are strongly self-interacting and exhibit strongest possible chaotic behavior. Constraints on the vacuum energy of the strings fix a certain discrete set of allowed string couplings. We provide extensive numerical evidence that these string couplings numerically coincide with running standard model coupling constants, evaluated at energy scales given by the masses of the know…
In this paper I discuss connections between the noncommutative geometry approach to the standard model on one side, and the internal space coming from strings on the other. The standard model in noncommutative geometry is described via the spectral action. I argue that an internal noncommutative manifold compactified at the renormalization scale, could give rise to the almost commutative geometry required by the spectral action. I then speculate how this could arise from the noncommutative geometry given by the vertex operators of a string theory.
Systematic classification of Z2xZ2 orbifold compactifications of the heterotic-string was pursued by using its free fermion formulation. The method entails random generation of string vacua and analysis of their entire spectra, and led to discovery of spinor-vector duality and three generation exophobic string vacua. The classification was performed for string vacua with unbroken SO(10) GUT symmetry, and progressively extended to models in which the SO(10) symmetry is broken to the SO(6)xSO(4), SU(5)xU(1), SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)^2 and SU(3)xU(1)xSU(2)^2 subgroups. Obtaining sizeable number of phenom…
This paper summarizes several developments in string-derived (Minimal Supersymmetric) Standard Models. Part one reviews the first string model containing solely the three generations of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and a single pair of Higgs as the matter in the observable sector of the low energy effective field theory. This model was constructed by Cleaver, Faraggi, and Nanopoulos in the Z_2 x Z_2 free fermionic formulation of weak coupled heterotic strings. Part two examines a representative collection of string/brane-derived MSSMs that followed. These additional models were ob…
We consider the Standard Model extended by a hidden sector U(1)_X symmetry that is spontaneously broken at the TeV scale by the vacuum expectation value of an additional scalar field. We study "dark string" solutions in this model and their properties due to the Higgs portal and gauge kinetic mixing operators. We find that dark strings effectively interact with Higgs and Z bosons by linear couplings, and with leptons and baryons via Aharonov-Bohm couplings, thus possibly leading to new cosmological constraints on dark matter models with spontaneously broken extra U(1) symmetry factors.
We investigate asymmetric orbifold models constructed from non-supersymmetric heterotic strings. We systematically classify the asymmetric orbifold models with standard embeddings and present a list of asymmetric orbifolds which are geometrically interpreted as toroidal compactifications of non-supersymmetric heterotic strings. By studying non-standard embedding models, we also construct examples of the {\em supersymmetric} asymmetric orbifold models based on non-supersymmetric heterotic strings.
For the vacuum sectors of regime-III ABF models, we observe that two sets of combinatorial objects: the strings which parametrize the row-to-row transfer matrix eigenvectors, and the paths which parametrize the corner transfer matrix eigenvectors, can both be expressed in terms of the same set of standard tableaux. Furthermore, the momenta of the strings, the energies of the paths, and the charges of the tableaux are such that there is a weight-preserving bijection between the two sets of eigenvectors, wherein the tableaux play an interpolating role. This bijection is so natural, that we conje…
The only allowed Higgs superpotential term at stringy tree level in the string derived Singlet Extensions of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (SEMSSM) is h S H_d H_u, which leads to an additional global U(1) symmetry in the Higgs potential. We propose the string inspired SEMSSM where the global U(1) symmetry is broken by the additional superpotential terms or supersymmetry breaking soft terms that can be obtained naturally due to the instanton effects or anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry. In these models, we can solve the μproblem and the fine-tuning problem for the lightest CP-even Hig…
Two dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theory is known to be equivalent to a string theory, as found by Gross in the large N limit, using the 1/N expansion. Later it was found that even a generalized YM theory leads to a string theory of the Gross type. In the standard YM theory case, Douglas and others found the string hamiltonian describing the propagation and the interactions of states made of strings winding on a cylindrical space-time. We address the problem of finding a similar hamiltonian for the generalized YM theory. As in the standard case we start by writing the theory as a theory of free…
We argue that apart from the standard closed and open strings one may consider a third possibility that we call monodromic strings. The monodromic string propagating on a target looks like an ordinary open string (a mapping from a segment to the target) but its space of states is isomorphic to that of a closed string. It is shown that the monodromic strings naturally appear in T-dualizing closed strings moving on simply connected targets. As a nontrivial topology changing example we show that the monodromic strings on a compact Poisson-Lie group are T-dual to the standard closed strings propag…
We present a Z_6 orbifold compactification of the E_8xE_8 heterotic string which leads to the (supersymmetric) Standard Model gauge group and matter content. The quarks and leptons appear as three 16-plets of SO(10), whereas the Higgs fields do not form complete SO(10) multiplets. The model has no exotic states at low energies and is consistent with gauge coupling unification. The top quark Yukawa coupling arises from gauge interactions and is of the order of the gauge couplings, whereas the other Yukawa couplings are suppressed.
We systematically search intersecting D-brane models, which just realize the Standard Model chiral matter contents and gauge symmetry. We construct new classes of non-supersymmetric Standard Model-like models. We also study gauge coupling constants of these models. The tree level gauge coupling is a function of compactification moduli, string scale, string coupling and winding number of D-branes. By tuning them, we examine whether the models can explain the experimental values of gauge couplings. As a result, we find that the string scale should be greater than $10^{14-15}$GeV if the compactif…
We present $Z_3$ orbifold compactifications of $E_8\times E_8^\prime$ heterotic string with three Wilson lines, resulting to the maximum number of SU(3) factors. Here, all the matter spectrums are in the SU(3) trits($\equiv $ three representations ${\bf 3,\bar 3,1}$) of the $SU(3)^8$ GUT. Using this information, we show how three family supersymmetric standard models(SSM) can be obtained. Also, the low lying interesting representations(fundamental and adjoint) of $E_6$ and $E_8$ are given in terms of trits, establishing simple criteria for treating these low lying representations of exceptiona…
We construct a supersymmetric standard model in the context of the Z_{12-I} orbifold compactification of the E_8 x E_8' heterotic string theory. The gauge group is SU(3)_c x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x U(1)^4 x [SO(10) x U(1)^3]' with sin^2θ_W = 3/8. We obtain three families of SO(10) spinor-like chiral matter states, and Higgs doublets. All other extra states are exactly vector-like under the standard model gauge symmetry. There are numerous standard model singlets, many of which get VEVs such that only the standard model gauge symmetry survives and desired Yukawa couplings can be generated at lower e…
We show how to construct supersymmetric three-generation models with gauge group and matter content of the Standard Model in the framework of non-simply-connected elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds Z. The elliptic fibration on a cover Calabi-Yau, where the model has 6 generations of SU(5) and the bundle is given via the spectral cover description, has a second section leading to the needed free involution. The relevant involution on the defining spectral data of the bundle is identified for a general Calabi-Yau of this type and invariant bundles are generally constructible.
Recently it was proposed that the ten dimensional tachyonic superstring vacua may serve as good starting points for the construction of viable phenomenological models. Such phenomenologically viable models enlarge the space of possible string solutions, and may offer novel insight into some of the outstanding problems in string phenomenology. In this paper we present a three generation standard--like model that may be regarded as a compactification of a ten dimensional tachyonic vacuum. We discuss the features of the model as compared to a similar model that may be regarded as compactification…
Lattice regularizations of the bosonic string allow no tachyons. This has often been viewed as the reason why these theories have never managed to make any contact to standard continuum string theories when the dimension of spacetime is larger than two. We study the continuum string theory in large spacetime dimensions where simple mean field theory is reliable. By keeping carefully the cutoff we show that precisely the existence of a tachyon makes it possible to take a scaling limit which reproduces the lattice-string results. We compare this scaling limit with another scaling limit which rep…
A new model of bosonic strings is considered. An action of the model is the sum of the standard string action and a term describing an interaction of a metric with a linear (affine) connection. The Lagrangian of this interaction is an arbitrary analytic function $f(R)$ of the scalar curvature. This is a classically integrable model. The space of classical solutions of the theory consists from sectors with constant curvature. In each sector the equations of motion reduce to the standard string equations and to an additional constant curvature equation for the linear connection. A bifurcation in…
The recent extension of the standard model to include massive neutrinos in the framework of noncommutative geometry and the spectral action principle involves new scalar fields and their interactions with the usual complex scalar doublet. After ensuring that they bring no unphysical consequences, we address the question of how these fields affect the physics predicted in Weinberg-Salam theory, particularly in the context of the Electroweak phase transition. Applying the Dolan-Jackiw procedure, we calculate the finite temperature corrections, and find that the phase transition is first order. T…
This paper presents a review of the basic, model-independent differences between the pre-big bang scenario, arising naturally in a string cosmology context, and the standard inflationary scenario. We use an unconventional approach in which the introduction of technical details is avoided as much as possible, trying to focus the reader's attention on the main conceptual aspects of both scenarios. The aim of the paper is not to conclude in favour either of one or of the other scenario, but to raise questions that are left to the reader's meditation. Warnings: the paper does not contain equations…
Three generation heterotic-string vacua in the free fermionic formulation gave rise to models with solely the MSSM states in the observable Standard Model charged sector. The relation of these models to Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold compactifications dictates that they produce three pairs of untwisted Higgs multiplets. The reduction to one pair relies on the analysis of supersymmetric flat directions, that give superheavy mass to the dispensable Higgs states. We explore the removal of the extra Higgs representations by using the free fermion boundary conditions and hence directly at the string level, rat…
Inflationary scenarios in string theory often involve a large number of light scalar fields, whose presence can enrich the post-inflationary evolution of primordial fluctuations generated during the inflationary epoch. We provide a simple example of such post-inflationary processing within an explicit string-inflationary construction, using a Kahler modulus as the inflaton within the framework of LARGE Volume Type-IIB string flux compactifications. We argue that inflationary models within this broad category often have a selection of scalars that are light enough to be cosmologically relevant,…
Talk given at the 26th Workshop: ``From Superstrings to Supergravity" Erice - Sicily, 5-12 December 1992: In this talk we discuss string consistency requirements on four dimensional string models, namely the cancellation of target space duality anomalies. The analysis is explicitly performed for (hypothetical) orbifold models assuming the massless spectrum of the supersymmetric standard model. In addition, some phenomenological properties of four-dimensional strings, like the unification of the standard model gauge coupling constants and soft supersymmetry breaking parameters, are investigated…
We desribe in detail a Z_6 orbifold compactification of the heterotic E_8 x E_8 string which leads to the (supersymmetric) standard model gauge group and matter content. The quarks and leptons appear as three 16-plets of SO(10), two of which are localized at fixed points with local SO(10) symmetry. The model has supersymmetric vacua without exotics at low energies and is consistent with gauge coupling unification. Supersymmetry can be broken via gaugino condensation in the hidden sector. The model has large vacuum degeneracy. Certain vacua with approximate B-L symmetry have attractive phenomen…
In the standard model, the electroweak Z-string can end on a Nambu monopole, whose mass is calculated to be 689 GeV from the current precise experimental data assuming the new particle with mass 125 GeV to be the Higgs boson. We study an extension of the standard model with additional singlet and triplet Higgs fields in the framework of N=1 supersymmetric field theory by using a D-brane configuration in type IIA string theory. We construct a D-brane configuration describing the electroweak symmetry breaking, and find a single D2-brane configuration describing a Z-string and a Nambu monopole at…
Motivated by astrophysical observations of excess electronic production in the galaxy, new theoretical models of the dark matter sector have been proposed in which the Standard model couples to the dark matter sector through an attractive interaction. The coupling of the Standard model to "dark strings", which are solutions of the low energy dark sector has been investigated recently. Here, we discuss the interaction between dark strings and standard cosmic strings and show that they can form bound states. In the presence of the interaction term, a Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) bound exis…
The presence of Killing-Yano tensors implies the existence of non-standard supersymmetries in point particle theories on curved backgrounds. In a string theoretical context these are symmetries of the modes describing the particle-like behavior of the string. In the presence of isometries we show that, in addition to these, one can also define a new type of non-standard supersymmetry among a mixture of particle and winding modes. The interplay with T-duality is also examined and illustrated by explicit examples.
In this paper, we concern about applying general relativistic tests on the spacetime produced by a static black hole associated with cloud of strings, in a universe filled with quintessence. The four tests we apply are precession of the perihelion in the planetary orbits, gravitational redshift, deflection of light, and the Shapiro time delay. Through this process, we constrain the spacetime's parameters in the context of the observational data, which results in about $\sim 10^{-9}$ for the cloud of strings parameter, and $\sim 10^{-20}$ m$^{-1}$ for that of quintessence. The response of the b…
Standard SUSY-GUTs such as those based on $SU(5)$ or $SO(10)$ lead to predictions for the values of $α_s$ and $sin^2θ_W$ in amazing agreement with experiment. In this article we investigate how these models may be obtained from string theory, thus bringing them into the only known consistent framework for quantum gravity. String models with matter in standard GUT representations require the realization of affine Lie algebras at higher levels. We start by describing some methods to build level $k=2$ orbifold string models with gauge groups $SU(5)$ or $SO(10)$. We present several examples and id…
According to string theory, string ball is a highly excited long string which decays to standard model particles at the Hagedorn temperature with thermal spectrum. If there are extra dimensions, the string scale can be $\sim$ TeV, and we should produce string balls at CERN LHC. In this paper we study top quark production from string balls at LHC and compare with the parton fusion results at NNLO using pQCD. We find significant top quark production from string balls at LHC which is comparable to standard model pQCD results. We also find that $\frac{dσ}{dp_T}$ of top quarks from string balls doe…
String gas cosmology is a string theory-based approach to early universe cosmology which is based on making use of robust features of string theory such as the existence of new states and new symmetries. A first goal of string gas cosmology is to understand how string theory can effect the earliest moments of cosmology before the effective field theory approach which underlies standard and inflationary cosmology becomes valid. String gas cosmology may also provide an alternative to the current standard paradigm of cosmology, the inflationary universe scenario. Here, the current status of strin…
We extend the free fermionic classification methodology to the class of standard-like heterotic-string vacua, in which the $SO(10)$ GUT symmetry is broken at the string level to $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)^2$. The space of GGSO free phase configurations in this case is vastly enlarged compared to the corresponding $SO(6)\times SO(4)$ and $SU(5)\times U(1)$ vacua. Extracting substantial numbers of phenomenologically viable models therefore requires a modification of the classification methods. This is achieved by identifying conditions on the GGSO projection coefficients, which are satisfied …
We construct D=4 Type I vacua with massless content remarkably close to that of the standard model of particle physics. They are tachyon-free non-supersymmetric models which are obtained starting with a standard D=4, N=1 compact Type IIB orientifold and adding the same number of Dp-branes and anti-Dp-branes distributed at different points of the underlying orbifold. Supersymmetry-breaking is felt by the observable world either directly, by gravity mediation or gauge mediation, depending on the brane configuration. We construct several simple three generation examples with the gauge group of th…
It is known that string theory compactifications leading to low energy effective theories with different chiral matter content ({\it e.g.} different numbers of standard model generations) are connected through phase transitions, described by non-trivial quantum fixed point theories. We point out that such compactifications are also connected on a purely classical level, through transitions that can be described using standard effective field theory. We illustrate this with examples, including some in which the transition proceeds entirely through supersymmetric configurations.
Starting from the Nambu-Goto bosonic string, a four dimensional superstring model is constructed using the equivalence of one boson to two Majorana-Weyl fermions. The conditions of anomaly cancellation in a 'heterotic' string theory lead to the correct result and is found to be consistent with the requirements of the standard model.
We use machine learning to approximate Calabi-Yau and SU(3)-structure metrics, including for the first time complex structure moduli dependence. Our new methods furthermore improve existing numerical approximations in terms of accuracy and speed. Knowing these metrics has numerous applications, ranging from computations of crucial aspects of the effective field theory of string compactifications such as the canonical normalizations for Yukawa couplings, and the massive string spectrum which plays a crucial role in swampland conjectures, to mirror symmetry and the SYZ conjecture. In the case of…
We re-examine a closed-string model defined by altering the boundary conditions for one handedness of two-dimensional propagators in otherwise-standard string theory. We evaluate the amplitudes using Kawai-Lewellen-Tye factorization into open-string amplitudes. The only modification to standard string theory is effectively that the spacetime Minkowski metric changes overall sign in one open-string factor. This cancels all but a finite number of states: As found in earlier approaches, with enough supersymmetry (e.g., type II) the tree amplitudes reproduce those of the massless truncation of ord…
We study compactification of heterotic strings to three dimensions on orbifolds of G_2 holonomy. We consider the standard embedding and show that the gauge group is broken from E_8 x E_8 or SO(32) to F_4 x E_8 or SO(25) respectively. We also compute the spectrum of massless states and compare with the results obtained from reduction of the 10-dimensional fields. Non-standard embeddings are discussed briefly. For type II compactifications we verify that IIB and IIA have equal massless spectrum.
We discuss the unification of gauge coupling constants in non-supersymmetric open string vacua that possess the properties of Split Supersymmetry, namely the Standard Model with Higgsinos at low energies and where the Standard model spectrum is always accompanied by right handed neutrinos. These vacua achieve partial unification of two out of three (namely SU(3)$_c$, SU(2), U(1)) running gauge couplings, possess massive gauginos and light Higgsinos at low energies and also satisfy $sin^2θ_w (M_s) = 3/8$. These vacua are based on four dimensional orbifold $Z_3 \times Z_3$ compactifications of s…
