We investigate how sterile neutrinos with a range of masses influence cosmology in MeV-scale reheating temperature scenarios. By computing the production of sterile neutrinos through the combination of mixing and scattering in the early Universe, we find that light sterile neutrinos, with masses and mixings as inferred from short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, are consistent with big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation for the reheating temperature of ${\cal O}(1)$ MeV if the parent particle responsible for reheating decays into electromagnetic components (radiative decay). In contrast, if the parent particle mainly decays into hadrons (hadronic decay), the bound from BBN becomes more stringent. In this case, the existence of the light sterile neutrinos can be cosmologically excluded, depending on the mass and the hadronic branching ratio of the parent particle.
A number of experimental anomalies involving neutrinos hint towards the existence of at least an extra (a very light) sterile neutrino. However, such a species, appreciably mixing with the active neutrinos, is disfavored by different cosmological observations like Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Large Scale Structure (LSS). Recently, it was shown that the presence of additional interactions in the sterile neutrino sector via light bosonic mediators can make the scenario cosmologically viable by suppressing the production of the sterile neutrinos from activ…
By numerically solving the appropriate Boltzmann equations, we study the production of sterile neutrinos in models with low reheating temperatures. We take into account the production in oscillations as well as in direct decays and compute the sterile neutrino primordial spectrum, the effective number of neutrino species, and the sterile neutrino contribution to the mass density of the Universe as a function of the mixing and the reheating parameters. It is shown that sterile neutrinos with non-negligible mixing angles do not necessarily lead to $N_ν\sim 4$ and that sterile neutrinos may have …
We present here a scenario, based on a low reheating temperature T_R << 100 MeV at the end of (the last episode of) inflation, in which the coupling of sterile neutrinos to active neutrinos can be as large as experimental bounds permit (thus making this neutrino ``visible'' in future experiments). In previous models this coupling was forced to be very small to prevent a cosmological overabundance of sterile neutrinos. Here the abundance depends on how low the reheating temperature is. For example, the sterile neutrino required by the LSND result does not have any cosmological problem within ou…
It is commonly assumed that the cosmological and astrophysical bounds on the mixings of sterile with active neutrinos are much more stringent than those obtained from laboratory measurements. We point out that in scenarios with a very low reheating temperature T_RH << 100 MeV at the end of (the last episode of) inflation or entropy creation, the abundance of sterile neutrinos becomes largely suppressed with respect to that obtained within the standard framework. Thus, in this case cosmological bounds become much less stringent than usually assumed, allowing sterile neutrinos to be ``visible'' …
In a minimal model of leptogenesis, the observed baryon asymmetry is realized after high-scale reheating into the lightest sterile neutrino. We consider constraints on this scenario from the stability of the Higgs vacuum during pre-heating. Depending on the reheat temperature, the lightest sterile neutrino may be in or out of thermal equilibrium at production. Demanding stability of the Higgs vacuum during pre-heating, we find strong constraints which primarily impact the parameter space of thermal leptogenesis.
From a theoretical point of view, there is a strong motivation to consider an MeV-scale reheating temperature induced by long-lived massive particles with masses around the weak scale, decaying only through gravitational interaction. In this study, we investigate lower limits on the reheating temperature imposed by big-bang nucleosynthesis assuming both radiative and hadronic decays of such massive particles. For the first time, effects of neutrino self-interactions and oscillations are taken into account in the neutrino thermalization calculations. By requiring consistency between theoretical…
We consider the case of very low reheating scenarios ($T_{\rm RH}\sim\mathcal{O}({\rm MeV})$) with a better calculation of the production of the relic neutrino background (with three-flavor oscillations). At 95% confidence level, a lower bound on the reheating temperature $T_{\rm RH}>4.1$ MeV is obtained from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, while $T_{\rm RH}>4.3$ MeV from Planck data for very light ($\sum m_i = 0.06$ eV) neutrinos. If neutrino masses are allowed to vary, Planck data yield $T_{\rm RH}>4.7$ MeV, the most stringent bound on the reheating temperature to date. Neutrino masses as large as…
We study constraints from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis on inert particles in a dark sector which contribute to the Hubble rate and therefore change the predictions of the primordial nuclear abundances. We pay special attention to the case of MeV-scale particles decaying into dark radiation, which are neither fully relativistic nor non-relativistic during all temperatures relevant to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. As an application we discuss the implications of our general results for models of self-interacting dark matter with light mediators.
Standard simple assumptions are usually made about the pre-Big Bang Nucleosynthesis epoch, from which we do not have observations. Modifying these assumptions, the predicted density of relic particles such as neutralinos and sterile neutrinos can be very different from that in the standard case. For example, neutralinos could have the dark matter density in (almost) any supersymmetric model, and sterile neutrinos with mixings large enough to be soon detected in neutrino experiments would become cosmologically acceptable. These possibilities are important in view of what the LHC, and neutrino e…
We study the effects of kination and scalar-tensor pre-Big Bang Nucleosynthesis cosmologies on the non-resonant production of sterile neutrinos. We show that if the peak of the production rate of sterile neutrinos occurs during the non-standard cosmological phase, the relic number density of sterile neutrinos could be reduced with respect to the number expected in the standard cosmology. Consequently, current bounds on active-sterile neutrino mixing derived from the relic energy density of sterile neutrinos could be greatly relaxed. In particular, we show that the sterile neutrinos which could…
In this short letter, we find that a magnetic transition dipole moment between tau and sterile neutrinos can account for the XENON1T excess events. Unlike the ordinary neutrino dipole moment, the introduction of the new sterile mass scale allows for astrophysical bounds to be suppressed. Interestingly, the best-fit regions that are compatible with the SN1987A imply either boron-8 or CNO neutrinos as the source flux. We find that sterile neutrinos of either $\sim$ 260 keV or in the $\sim$(500 - 800) keV mass range are capable of evading astrophysical constraints while being able to successfully…
Usually information from early eras such as reheating is hard to come by. In this paper we argue that, given the right circumstances, right-handed sterile neutrinos decaying to left-handed active ones at relatively late times can carry information from reheating by propagating freely over the thermal history. For not too small mixing angles, suitable right-handed neutrino masses are around ${\cal O}$(MeV-GeV). We identify the typical spectra and argue that they provide information on the ratio of the inflaton mass to the reheating temperature. This primordial neutrino signal can be strong enou…
We investigate a new bound on the low reheating temperature in a scenario where the Universe experiences early matter-domination before reheating after which the standard big bang cosmology begins. In many models of dark matter (DM), the small scale fluctuations of DM grow during the early matter-domination era and seed the formation of the ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs). Using the constraints on the number of UCMHs from gamma-ray observations, we find a lower bound on the reheating temperature between ${\cal O}(10)~{\rm MeV} - {\cal O}(100)~{\rm MeV}$ for WIMP dark matter depending on the nat…
We point out that in scenarios with a low reheating temperature $T_R << 100$ MeV at the end of (the last episode of) inflation or entropy production, the abundance of sterile neutrinos becomes largely independent of their coupling to active neutrinos. Thus, cosmological bounds become less stringent than usually assumed, allowing sterile neutrinos to be ``visible'' in future experiments. For example, the sterile neutrino required by the LSND result does not have any cosmological problem within these scenarios.
Both cosmology and astrophysics suggest the possible existence of sterile neutrino which is a dark matter candidate. The interaction of sterile neutrinos with matter in keV energy scale has been studied in the literature. In this paper we study the interaction of sterile neutrinos with atoms and their role on ionization of atoms in MeV and GeV energy scale. We also study the interaction of sterile neutrinos with nuclei in the MeV and GeV energy scale. We obtain the relevant cross sections for both these two interactions. Finally we compare our results with the results of keV energy range.
We investigate the allowed range of reheating temperature values in light of the Planck 2015 results and the recent joint analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from the BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck experiments, using monomial and binomial inflationary potentials. While the well studied $ϕ^2$ inflationary potential is no longer favored by current CMB data, as well as $ϕ^p$ with $p>2$, a $ϕ^1$ potential and canonical reheating ($w_{re}=0$) provide a good fit to the CMB measurements. In this last case, we find that the Planck 2015 $68\%$ confidence limit upper bound on the spectral i…
We revise cosmological mass bounds on hadronic axions in low-reheating cosmological scenarios, with a reheating temperature $T_{\rm RH}~\le 100$ MeV, in light of the latest cosmological observations. In this situation, the neutrino decoupling would be unaffected, while the thermal axion relic abundance is suppressed. Moreover, axions are colder in low-reheating temperature scenarios, so that bounds on their abundance are possibly loosened. As a consequence of these two facts, cosmological mass limits on axions are relaxed. Using state-of-the-art cosmological data and characterizing axion-pion …
Neutrino-neutrino interactions, as mediated by standard model Z exchange, can drastically enhance the Dodelson-Widrow mechanism for the production of sterile neutrinos in the region of temperature $5-15$MeV. For a sterile mass in the KeV region with the usual type of active-sterile neutrino coupling, the production can be copious enough to provide ample dark matter, even when the active-sterile coupling is small enough to avoid the bounds set by laboratory results.
The primordial lithium abundance inferred from observations of metal-poor stars is ~3 times smaller than the theoretical value in standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) model. We assume a simple model including a sterile neutrino nu_H with mass of O(10) MeV which decays long after BBN. We then investigate cosmological effects of a sterile neutrino decay. We formulate the injection spectrum of nonthermal photons induced by electrons and positrons generated at the nu_H decay, as a function of the nu_H mass and the photon temperature. We then consistently solve (1) the cosmic thermal history, (2…
The MiniBooNE collaboration has reported an excess of $460.5\pm 95.8$ electron-like events ($4.8σ$). We propose an explanation of these events in terms of a sterile neutrino decaying into a photon and a light neutrino. The sterile neutrino has a mass around 250 MeV and it is produced from kaon decays in the proton beam target via mixing with the muon or the electron in the range $10^{-11} \lesssim |U_{\ell 4}|^2 \lesssim 10^{-7}$ ($\ell = e,μ$). The model can be tested by considering the time distribution of the events in MiniBooNE and by looking for single-photon events in running or upcoming…
Secret interactions among sterile neutrinos have been recently proposed as an escape-route to reconcile eV sterile neutrino hints from short-baseline anomalies with cosmological observations. In particular models with coupling g_X \gtrsim 10^{-2} and gauge boson mediators $X$ with $M_X \lesssim 10$ MeV lead to large matter potential suppressing the sterile neutrino production before the neutrino decoupling. With this choice of parameter ranges, big bang nucleosynthesis is left unchanged and gives no bound on the model. However, we show that at lower temperatures when active-sterile oscillation…
The existence of light sterile neutrinos, as predicted in several models, can help to explain a number of observations starting from dark mater to recent anomalies in short baseline experiments. In this paper we consider two models - Left-Right Symmetric Zee model and Extended Seesaw model, that can naturally accommodate the presence of light sterile neutrinos in the eV to MeV mass scale. We perform a detailed study on the neutrinoless double beta decay process which receives major contributions from diagrams involving these light sterile neutrinos. Considering a number of theoretical and expe…
Improved upper bounds are presented on the coupling $|U_{e4}|^2$ of an electron to a sterile neutrino $ν_4$ from analyses of data on nuclear and particle decays, including superallowed nuclear beta decays, the ratios $R^{(π)}_{e/μ}=BR(π^+ \to e^+ ν_e)/BR(π^+ \to μ^+ ν_μ)$, $R^{(K)}_{e/μ}$, $R^{(D_s)}_{e/τ}$, and $B^+_{e 2}$ decay, covering the mass range from MeV to GeV.
We consider the possibility of the lightest sterile neutrino dark matter which has dipole interaction with heavier sterile neutrinos. The lifetime can be long enough to be a dark matter candidate without violating other constraints and the correct amount of relic abundance can be produced in the early Universe. We find that a sterile neutrino with the mass of around MeV and the dimension-five non-renormalisable dipole interaction suppressed by $Λ_5 \gtrsim 10^{15}$ GeV can be a good candidate of dark matter, while heavier sterile neutrinos with masses of the order of GeV can explain the active…
If the reheating temperature at the end of inflation is low, of order 10 MeV, then dark matter produced through ultraviolet freeze-in has a large direct detection cross section. We study such a scenario in which dark matter is hadrophilic. This leads to dark matter-nucleon scattering cross sections of interest for near-future experiments for dark matter masses in the range of 100 keV-100 MeV. We explore how these predictions vary if reheating is non-instantaneous.
Sterile right-handed neutrinos can be naturally embedded in a low scale gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the standard model. We show that, within a low reheating scenario, such a neutrino is an interesting candidate for dark matter. We emphasize that if the neutrino mass is of order of MeV, then it accounts for the measured dark matter relic density and also accommodates the observed flux of 511 keV photons from the galactic bulge.
For active-sterile mixing to be responsible for the full relic abundance of dark matter additional new physics is needed beyond the keV-scale sterile neutrino itself. The extra ingredient we consider here is the presence of self-interactions among the sterile neutrinos. We examine whether active-to-sterile conversion is amplified enough in this scenario that the observed abundance of dark matter can be obtained with a subconstraint mixing angle. This turns out never to be the case in the region we explore: either self-interactions have too small an impact and cannot escape bounds on the mass a…
We revise the bounds on heavy sterile neutrinos, especially in the case of their mixing with muon neutrinos in the charged current. We summarize the present experimental limits, and we reanalyze the existing data from the accelerator neutrino experiments and from Super-Kamiokande to set new bounds on a heavy sterile neutrino in the range of masses from 8 MeV to 390 MeV. We also discuss how the future accelerator neutrino experiments can improve the present limits.
We study models in which the universe exits reheating at temperatures in the MeV regime. By combining light element abundance measurements with cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data we find a fairly robust lower limit on the reheating temperature of T_RH > 4 MeV at 95% C.L. However, if the heavy particle whose decay reheats the universe has a direct decay mode to neutrinos, there are some small islands left in parameter space where a reheating temperature as low as 1 MeV is allowed. The derived lower bound on the reheating temperature also leads to very stringent bounds on…
Cosmic Structure Strikes Back: The Elimination of Vector-Mediated Nonstandard Interaction Models as a Mechanism for Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter Production
We explore the implications of the existence of heavy neutral fermions (i.e., sterile neutrinos) for the thermal history of the early universe. In particular, we consider sterile neutrinos with rest masses in the 100 MeV to 500 MeV range, with couplings to ordinary active neutrinos large enough to guarantee thermal and chemical equilibrium at epochs in the early universe with temperatures T > 1 GeV, but in a range to give decay lifetimes from seconds to minutes. Such neutrinos would decouple early, with relic densities comparable to those of photons, but decay out of equilibrium, with conseque…
We consider the cosmological effects of sterile neutrinos with the masses of $150- 450$ MeV. The decay of sterile neutrinos changes the thermal history of the Universe and affects the energy density of radiation at the recombination and the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) results. We derive severe constraints on the parameters of sterile neutrinos from the primordial abundances of helium-4 and deuterium. We also find that in a particular model the constraints can be considerably relaxed by assuming a large lepton asymmetry in the active neutrinos. In this case, the consistent parameters result …
We study possible contributions of heavy sterile neutrinos $ν_h$ to the decays $τ^-\to e^{\pm}(μ^{\pm})π^{\mp}π^-$. From the experimental upper bounds on their rates we derive new constraints on the $ν_h-ν_τ$ mixing in the mass region $140.5{MeV}\leq m_{ν_h}\leq 1637$ MeV. We discuss cosmological and astrophysical status of $ν_h$ in this mass region and compare our constraints with those recently derived by the NOMAD collaboration.
We study how the oscillations of the neutrinos affect their thermalization process during the reheating period with temperature O(1) MeV in the early universe. We follow the evolution of the neutrino density matrices and investigate how the predictions of big bang nucleosynthesis vary with the reheating temperature. For the reheating temperature of several MeV, we find that including the oscillations makes different predictions, especially for $^4$He abundance. Also, the effects on the lower bound of the reheating temperature from cosmological observations are discussed.
We study production of sterile neutrinos in the atmosphere and their detection at Super-Kamiokande. A sterile neutrino in the mass range $1\,{\rm MeV} \lesssim M_N \lesssim 105\,{\rm MeV}$ is produced by muon or pion decay, and decays to an electron-positron pair and an active neutrino. Such a decay of the sterile neutrino leaves two electron-like Cherenkov rings in the detector. We estimate the sterile neutrino flux from the well-established active neutrino fluxes and study the number of the decay events in the detector. The upper bounds for the active-sterile mixings are obtained by comparin…
We consider relatively heavy neutrinos $ν_H$, mostly contributing to a sterile state $ν_s$, with mass in the range 10 MeV $\lesssim m_s \lesssim m_π \sim 135$ MeV, which are thermally produced in the early universe in collisional processes involving active neutrinos, and freezing out after the QCD phase transition. If these neutrinos decay after the active neutrino decoupling, they generate extra neutrino radiation, but also contribute to entropy production. Thus, they alter the value of the effective number of neutrino species $N_{\rm eff}$ as for instance measured by the cosmic microwave bac…
Sterile neutrinos can be produced in the early universe via interactions with their active counterparts. For small active-sterile mixing angles, thermal equilibrium with the standard model plasma is not reached and sterile neutrinos are only produced via flavor oscillations. We study in detail this regime, taking into account matter potentials and decoherence effects caused by elastic scatterings with the plasma. We find that resonant oscillations occurring at temperatures $T\lesssim 10\,\mathrm{GeV}$ lead to a significant enhancement of the sterile neutrino production rate. Taking this into a…
Local Universe observations find a value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ that is larger than the value inferred from the Cosmic Microwave Background and other early Universe measurements, assuming known physics and the $Λ$CDM cosmological model. We show that additional radiation in active neutrinos produced just before Big Bang Nucleosynthesis by an unstable sterile neutrino with mass $m_s=$ O(10) MeV can alleviate this discrepancy. The necessary masses and couplings of the sterile neutrino, assuming it mixes primarily with $ν_τ$ and/or $ν_μ$ neutrinos, are within reach of Super-Kamiokande as wel…
Nearly-sterile neutrinos with masses in the MeV range and below would be produced in the beam of the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at Fermilab. In this article, we study the potential for SBN to discover these particles through their subsequent decays in its detectors. We discuss the decays which will be visible at SBN in a minimal and non-minimal extension of the Standard Model, and perform simulations to compute the parameter space constraints which could be placed in the absence of a signal. We demonstrate that the SBN program can extend existing bounds on well constrained channels …
In the standard model extended with a seesaw mass matrix, we study the production of sterile neutrinos from the decay of vector bosons at $T\simeq M_{W,Z}$. We derive a general quantum kinetic equation for the production of sterile neutrinos and their effective mixing angles valid in a wide range of temperature, to all orders in interactions of the standard model, and to leading order mixing angle $θ\ll 1$. Production rates and effective mixing angles depend sensitively on helicity. Positive helicity states interact more weakly with the medium and their effective mixing angle is not modified s…
Among the class of models with small mixing angles between sterile and active neutrinos, we place constraints on the effective muon-to-sterile neutrino magnetic and electric dipole transition moments from the combined MiniBooNE results for the sterile neutrino mass range of $10\;\mathrm{MeV}<m_s<500\; \mathrm{MeV}$. Our results are valid for models with CP-violating interactions and for Dirac and Majorana sterile neutrinos. In addition, we show that such dipole electromagnetic interactions cannot be the main source of the anomalous events in the MiniBooNE experiment because they fail to reprod…
We show that the existence of new, light gauge interactions coupled to Standard Model (SM) neutrinos give rise to an abundance of sterile neutrinos through the sterile neutrinos' mixing with the SM. Specifically, in the mass range of MeV-GeV and coupling of $g' \sim 10^{-6} - 10^{-2}$, the decay of this new vector boson in the early universe produces a sufficient quantity of sterile neutrinos to account for the observed dark matter abundance. Interestingly, this can be achieved within a natural extension of the SM gauge group, such as a gauged $L_μ-L_τ$ number, without any tree-level coupling …
We consider a scenario where time dependence on physical parameters is introduced by the misalignment of an ultra-light scalar field. The initial VEV of such field at the early time remains a constant until Hubble becomes comparable to its mass. Interesting cosmological consequences are considered. Light sterile neutrinos hinted by terrestrial neutrino experiments are studied as a benchmark model. We show the BBN constraints can be easily avoided in this scenario, even if reheating temperature is high. The scalar can be naturally light in spite of its couplings to other fields. Parameters of s…
Recently, the MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has updated the results with increased data and reported an excess of $560.6 \pm 119.6$ electronlike events ($4.7σ$) in the neutrino operation mode. In this paper, we propose a scenario to account for the excess where a Dirac-type sterile neutrino, produced by a charged kaon decay through the neutrino mixing, decays into a leptophilic axionlike particle ($\ell$ALP) and a muon neutrino. The electron-positron pairs produced from the $\ell$ALP decays can be interpreted as electronlike events provided that their opening angle is sufficiently small. In…
A laboratory detection of a sterile neutrino could provide the first indication of the evolution of the Universe before Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), an epoch yet untested. Such "visible" sterile neutrinos are observable in upcoming experiments such as KATRIN/TRISTAN and HUNTER in the keV mass range and PTOLEMY and others in the eV mass range. A set of standard assumptions is typically made about cosmology before the temperature of the Universe was 5 MeV. However, non-standard pre-BBN cosmologies based on alternative assumptions could arise in motivated theoretical models and are equally in …
We study the production of sterile neutrinos in supernovae, focusing in particular on the keV--MeV mass range, which is the most interesting range if sterile neutrinos are to account for the dark matter in the Universe. Focusing on the simplest scenario in which sterile neutrinos mixes only with muon or tau neutrino, we argue that the production of keV--MeV sterile neutrinos can be strongly enhanced by a Mikheyev--Smirnov--Wolfenstein (MSW) resonance, so that a substantial flux is expected to emerge from a supernova, even if vacuum mixing angles between active and sterile neutrinos are tiny. U…
We discuss how a laboratory detection of a sterile neutrino not only would constitute a fundamental discovery of a new particle, but could also provide an indication of the evolution of the Universe before Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), a fundamental discovery in cosmology. These "visible" sterile neutrinos could be detected in experiments such as KATRIN/TRISTAN and HUNTER in the keV mass range and PTOLEMY, KATRIN and reactor neutrino experiments in the eV mass range. Standard assumptions are usually made to compute the relic abundance and momentum distribution of particles produced before th…
Recent results from neutrino experiments show evidence for light sterile neutrinos which do not have any Standard Model interactions. In this work we study the hidden interaction of sterile neutrinos with an "MeV scale" gauge boson (the $ν_s$HI model) with mass $M_X$ and leptonic coupling $g^\prime_l$. By performing an analysis on the $ν_s$HI model using the data of the MINOS neutrino experiment we find that the values above $G_X/G_F=92.4$ are excluded by more than $2σ$ C.L., where $G_F$ is the Fermi constant and $G_X$ is the field strength of the $ν_s$HI model. Using this model we can also pr…
We analyze the influence of decaying sterile neutrinos with the masses in the range 1-140 MeV on the primordial Helium-4 abundance, explicitly solving the Boltzmann equations for all particle species, taking into account neutrino flavour oscillations, and paying special attention to systematic uncertainties. We show that the Helium abundance depends only on the sterile neutrino lifetime and not on the way the active-sterile mixing is distributed between flavours, and derive an upper bound on the lifetime. We also demonstrate that the recent results of Izotov & Thuan [arXiv:1001.4440], who find…
