Semi-supervised learning (SSL) has been extensively studied to improve the generalization ability of deep neural networks for visual recognition. To involve the unlabelled data, most existing SSL methods are based on common density-based cluster assumption: samples lying in the same high-density region are likely to belong to the same class, including the methods performing consistency regularization or generating pseudo-labels for the unlabelled images. Despite their impressive performance, we argue three limitations exist: 1) Though the density information is demonstrated to be an important clue, they all use it in an implicit way and have not exploited it in depth. 2) For feature learning, they often learn the feature embedding based on the single data sample and ignore the neighborhood information. 3) For label-propagation based pseudo-label generation, it is often done offline and difficult to be end-to-end trained with feature learning. Motivated by these limitations, this paper proposes to solve the SSL problem by building a novel density-aware graph, based on which the neighborhood information can be easily leveraged and the feature learning and label propagation can also be trained in an end-to-end way. Specifically, we first propose a new Density-aware Neighborhood Aggregation(DNA) module to learn more discriminative features by incorporating the neighborhood information in a density-aware manner. Then a novel Density-ascending Path based Label Propagation(DPLP) module is proposed to generate the pseudo-labels for unlabeled samples more efficiently according to the feature distribution characterized by density. Finally, the DNA module and DPLP module evolve and improve each other end-to-end.

Simi-Supervised Recognition Challenge-FGVC7 is a challenging fine-grained recognition competition. One of the difficulties of this competition is how to use unlabeled data. We adopted pseudo-tag data mining to increase the amount of training data. The other one is how to identify similar birds with a very small difference, especially those have a relatively tiny main-body in examples. We combined generic image recognition and fine-grained image recognition method to solve the problem. All generic image recognition models were training using PaddleClas . Using the combination of two different w…

Training deep neural networks for image recognition often requires large-scale human annotated data. To reduce the reliance of deep neural solutions on labeled data, state-of-the-art semi-supervised methods have been proposed in the literature. Nonetheless, the use of such semi-supervised methods has been quite rare in the field of facial expression recognition (FER). In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on recently proposed state-of-the-art semi-supervised learning methods in the context of FER. We conduct comparative study on eight semi-supervised learning methods, namely Pi-Model…

The success of most advanced facial expression recognition works relies heavily on large-scale annotated datasets. However, it poses great challenges in acquiring clean and consistent annotations for facial expression datasets. On the other hand, self-supervised contrastive learning has gained great popularity due to its simple yet effective instance discrimination training strategy, which can potentially circumvent the annotation issue. Nevertheless, there remain inherent disadvantages of instance-level discrimination, which are even more challenging when faced with complicated facial represe…

Although deep convolutional networks have achieved great performance in face recognition tasks, the challenge of domain discrepancy still exists in real world applications. Lack of domain coverage of training data (source domain) makes the learned models degenerate in a testing scenario (target domain). In face recognition tasks, classes in two domains are usually different, so classical domain adaptation approaches, assuming there are shared classes in domains, may not be reasonable solutions for this problem. In this paper, self-supervised learning is adopted to learn a better embedding spac…

Although deep face recognition benefits significantly from large-scale training data, a current bottleneck is the labelling cost. A feasible solution to this problem is semi-supervised learning, exploiting a small portion of labelled data and large amounts of unlabelled data. The major challenge, however, is the accumulated label errors through auto-labelling, compromising the training. This paper presents an effective solution to semi-supervised face recognition that is robust to the label noise aroused by the auto-labelling. Specifically, we introduce a multi-agent method, named GroupNet (GN…
One of the key issues in facial expression recognition in the wild (FER-W) is that curating large-scale labeled facial images is challenging due to the inherent complexity and ambiguity of facial images. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a self-supervised simple facial landmark encoding (SimFLE) method that can learn effective encoding of facial landmarks, which are important features for improving the performance of FER-W, without expensive labels. Specifically, we introduce novel FaceMAE module for this purpose. FaceMAE reconstructs masked facial images with elaborately designed semantic …

In this paper, we aim to improve the performance of in-the-wild Facial Expression Recognition (FER) by exploiting semi-supervised learning. Large-scale labeled data and deep learning methods have greatly improved the performance of image recognition. However, the performance of FER is still not ideal due to the lack of training data and incorrect annotations (e.g., label noises). Among existing in-the-wild FER datasets, reliable ones contain insufficient data to train robust deep models while large-scale ones are annotated in lower quality. To address this problem, we propose a semi-supervised…

Only parts of unlabeled data are selected to train models for most semi-supervised learning methods, whose confidence scores are usually higher than the pre-defined threshold (i.e., the confidence margin). We argue that the recognition performance should be further improved by making full use of all unlabeled data. In this paper, we learn an Adaptive Confidence Margin (Ada-CM) to fully leverage all unlabeled data for semi-supervised deep facial expression recognition. All unlabeled samples are partitioned into two subsets by comparing their confidence scores with the adaptively learned confide…

Face recognition in unconstrained environments is challenging due to variations in illumination, quality of sensing, motion blur and etc. An individual's face appearance can vary drastically under different conditions creating a gap between train (source) and varying test (target) data. The domain gap could cause decreased performance levels in direct knowledge transfer from source to target. Despite fine-tuning with domain specific data could be an effective solution, collecting and annotating data for all domains is extremely expensive. To this end, we propose a self-supervised domain learni…

We consider the problem of semi-supervised 3D action recognition which has been rarely explored before. Its major challenge lies in how to effectively learn motion representations from unlabeled data. Self-supervised learning (SSL) has been proved very effective at learning representations from unlabeled data in the image domain. However, few effective self-supervised approaches exist for 3D action recognition, and directly applying SSL for semi-supervised learning suffers from misalignment of representations learned from SSL and supervised learning tasks. To address these issues, we present A…

Multiview recognition has been well studied in the literature and achieves decent performance in object recognition and retrieval task. However, most previous works rely on supervised learning and some impractical underlying assumptions, such as the availability of all views in training and inference time. Given this setup, a novel surrogate task for self-supervised learning is proposed by pursuing "object invariant" representation. This is solved by random…
In recent years, graph convolutional networks (GCNs) play an increasingly critical role in skeleton-based human action recognition. However, most GCN-based methods still have two main limitations: 1) They only consider the motion information of the joints or process the joints and bones separately, which are unable to fully explore the latent functional correlation between joints and bones for action recognition. 2) Most of these works are performed in the supervised learning way, which heavily relies on massive labeled training data. To address these issues, we propose a semi-supervised skele…

First, we introduce a MixUp-based data augmentation technique to reduce the bias of the long-tailed data. Furthermore, we propose a new supervised contrastive learning method, named Supervised contrastive learning on Mixed Classes (SMC), for blended images. S…

This paper looks at semi-supervised learning (SSL) for image-based text recognition. One of the most popular SSL approaches is pseudo-labeling (PL). PL approaches assign labels to unlabeled data before re-training the model with a combination of labeled and pseudo-labeled data. Moreover, the combinatorial complexity of the hypothesis space …
