We demonstrate the appearance of symmetry protected triplon Dirac modal lines in the low energy excitation spectrum of a realistic microscopic model of the geometrically frustrated quantum magnet SrCu2(BO3)2 in its high symmetry phase. The symmetry-allowed Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions induce dispersive trilpon bands within the bond-operator formalism that cross linearly over an extended closed path in the Brillouin zone. Our results establish that the nodal lines are protected by a $U(1)$-symmetry and robust against perturbations that preserve this symmetry. In the presence of a longitudinal field, the nodal loop shrinks and vanishes for a sufficiently strong field.
The search for topological insulators has been actively promoted in the field of condensed matter physics for further development in energy-efficient information transmission and processing. In this context, recent studies have revealed that not only electrons but also bosonic particles such as magnons can construct edge states carrying nontrivial topological invariants. Here we demonstrate topological triplon bands in the spin-1/2 two-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$, which is closely related to a pseudo-one-dimensional variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heege…
Sufficiently dimerized quantum antiferromagnets display elementary S=1 excitations, triplon quasiparticles, protected by a gap at low energies. At higher energies, the triplons may decay into two or more triplons. A strong enough magnetic field induces Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons. For both phenomena the compound IPA-CuCl3 is an excellent model system. Nevertheless no quantitative model was determined so far despite numerous studies. Recent theoretical progress allows us to analyse data of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and of magnetic susceptibility to determine the four magneti…
A multiple wavevector (Q) reconstruction of the Fermi surface is shown to yield a profoundly different electronic structure to that characteristic of single wavevector reconstruction, despite their proximity in energy. We consider the specific case in which ordering is generated by Qx = [2πa, 0] and Qy = [0,2πb] (in which a = b = 1/4) - similar to those identified in neutron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, and more generally show that an isolated pocket adjacent to the nodal point knodal = [\pm π/2, \pm π/2] is a protected feature of such a multiple-Q model, potentia…
We analyze a diamond-lattice Hubbard model with the spatially modulated Hubbard interaction. Our dynamical mean-field analysis with special emphasis on non-Hermitian properties elucidates that the gapless nodal line changes into symmetry-protected exceptional torus (SPET) at the Fermi level enclosing the three-dimensional open Fermi surface, which is unique to non-Hermitian physics with chiral symmetry. Furthermore, we also elucidate the effects of the SPETs on the magnetic response; our results based on the random-phase approximation combined with the the dynamical mean-field theory shows tha…
Magnetic field induced multiple non-Dirac nodal-lines are found to emerge in the triplet dispersion bands of a frustrated spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic model on the CaVO lattice. Plaquette and bond operator formalisms have been employed to obtain the triplet plaquette and bond excitations for two different parameter regimes in the presence of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions based on the plaquette-resonating-valence-bond and dimerized ground states, respectively. In the absence of magnetic field a pair of six-fold degenerate nodal-loops with distinct topological feature i…
Owing to their chiral cubic structure, exotic multifold topological excitations have been predicted and recently observed in transition metal silicides like $β$-RhSi. Herein, we report that the topological character of RhSi is also observed in its orthorhombic $α$-phase which displays multiple types of Dirac nodes very close to the Fermi level ($\varepsilon_F$) with the near absence of topologically trivial carriers. We discuss the symmetry analysis, band connectivity along high-symmetry lines using group representations, the band structure, and the nature of the Dirac points and nodal lines o…
Nodal-point and Nodal-line structures in the dispersion of electron energy bands are characterized by their high degeneracy in certain corners or lines in the Brillouin zone (BZ). These nodal structures can also exist in the dispersion of itinerant electrons in magnetically ordered materials whose symmetry groups are anti-unitary groups called the magnetic space groups. In the present work, we provide a complete list of magnetic space groups which can host symmetry-protected nodal-point/line band structures for spin-1/2 fermionic particles, where the degeneracies at the nodal points/lines are …
Line nodes in the superconducting gap are known to be a source of Majorana flat bands (MFBs) in time-reversal-invariant superconductors (SCs). Here, we extend this relation to all symmetry-protected line nodes where an additional constraint arising from a symmetry of the crystal destabilizes or hides the existence of MFBs. By establishing a one-to-one correspondence between group theoretical and topological classifications, we are able to classify the possible line-node-induced MFBs, including cases with (magnetic) non-symmorphic space groups. Our theoretical analysis reveals a new type of MFB…
Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are two quintessential ingredients underlying novel topological transport phenomena in itinerant ferromagnets. When spin-polarized bands support nodal points/lines with band degeneracy that can be lifted by SOC, the nodal structures become a source of Berry curvature; this leads to a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Contrary to three-dimensional systems that naturally host nodal points/lines, two-dimensional (2D) systems can possess stable nodal structures only when proper crystalline symmetry exists. Here we show that 2D spin-polarized band structures…
Conventional topological insulators and superconductors have topologically protected nodal points on their boundaries, and the recent interests in nodal-line semimetals only concerned bulk band structures. Here, we present a novel four-dimensional topological insulator protected by an anti-unitary reflection symmetry, whose boundary band has a single $PT$-symmetric nodal line with double topological charges. Inspired by the recent experimental realization of the four-dimensional quantum Hall effect, we also propose a cold-atom system which realizes the novel topological insulator with tunable …
The non-regularizability of free fermion field theories, which is the root of various quantum anomalies, plays a central role in particle physics and modern condensed matter physics. In this paper, we generalize the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem to all minimal nodal free fermion field theories protected by the time reversal, charge conservation, and charge conjugation symmetries. We prove that these massless field theories cannot be regularized on a lattice.
We report a study on the magnetotransport properties and on the Fermi surfaces (FS) of the ZrSi(Se,Te) semimetals. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, in absence of spin orbit coupling (SOC), reveal that both the Se and the Te compounds display Dirac nodal lines (DNL) close to the Fermi level $\varepsilon_F$ at symmorphic and non-symmorphic positions, respectively. We find that the geometry of their FSs agrees well with DFT predictions. ZrSiSe displays low residual resistivities, pronounced magnetoresistivity, high carrier mobilities, and a butterfly-like angle-dependent magnetoresis…
We propose the existence of a symmetry-protected topological Dirac nodal line (DNL) magnonic phase in layered honeycomb collinear antiferromagnets even in the presence of spin-orbit Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We show that the magnon spin Nernst effect, predicted to occur in strictly two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb collinear antiferromagnets cancels out in the layered honeycomb collinear antiferromagnets. In other words, the magnon spin Nernst effect in each 2D antiferromagnetic layer cancels out the succeeding layer. Hence, the Berry curvature vanish in the entire Brillouin zone due to …
Using both an effective three-band model and {\it ab initio} calculations, we have investigated various topological features in the cubic ferromagnetic $5d^{1,2}$ systems showing large spin-orbit coupling (SOC): Ba$_2$NaOsO$_6$, Sr$_2$SrOsO$_6$, and Ba$_2$$B$ReO$_6$ ($B$= Mg, Zn). In the presence of time-reversal symmetry (${\cal T}$), spinless Dirac nodal loops linked to each other at the $W$ points appear in the mirror planes. Remarkably, breaking ${\cal T}$ leads to spinful magnetic Weyl nodal loops (MWNLs) that are robust even at large SOC and correlation strength $U$ variation due to the …
We have applied nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study the distinctive network of nodal lines in the Dirac semimetal ZrSiTe. The low-$T$ behavior is dominated by a symmetry-protected nodal line, with NMR providing a sensitive probe of the diamagnetic response of the associated carriers. A sharp low-$T$ minimum in NMR shift and $(T_1T)^{-1}$ provides a quantitative measure of the dispersionless, quasi-2D behavior of this nodal line. We also identify a van Hove singularity closely connected to this nodal line, and an associated $T$-induced Lifshitz transition. A disconnect in the NMR s…
The quasiparticle spectra of interacting Weyl and nodal-line semimetals on a cubic lattice are studied using the cluster perturbation theory. By tracking the spectral functions under interaction, we find that the Weyl points will move to and meet at a specific point in one Weyl semimetal model, while in the other Weyl semimetal model they are immobile. In the nodal-line semimetals, we find that the nodal line shrinks to a point and then disappears under interaction in one-nodal-line system. When we add another nodal line to this system, we find that the two nodal lines both shrink to specific …
We study the nontrivial linear magnon band crossings in the collinear antiferromagnets on the two-dimensional (2D) CaVO lattice, also realized in some iron-based superconductors such as AFe$_{1.6+x}$Se$_2$ (A = K, Rb, Cs). It is shown that the combination of space-inversion and time-reversal symmetry ($\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry) leads to doubly-degenerate eight magnon branches, which cross each other linearly along a one-dimensional loop in the 2D Brillouin zone. We show that the Dirac nodal loops (DNLs) are not present in the collinear ferromagnet on this lattice. Thus, the current 2D antiferrom…
In this report, we propose a new concept of one-dimensional (1D) closed lines of Dirac magnon nodes in two-dimensional (2D) momentum space of quasi-2D quantum magnetic systems. They are termed "2D Dirac magnon nodal-line loops". We utilize the bilayer honeycomb ferromagnets with intralayer coupling $J$ and interlayer coupling $J_L$, which is realizable in the honeycomb chromium compounds CrX$_3$ (X $\equiv$ Br, Cl, and I). However, our results can also exist in other layered quasi-2D quantum magnetic systems. Here, we show that the magnon bands of the bilayer honeycomb ferromagnets overlap for…
By including a material-relevant off-diagonal interaction called the $Γ$ term into the Kitaev model and introducing spatial anisotropy in the interaction strength on the honeycomb lattice, we obtain a series of nodal Z$_2$ quantum spin liquids (QSLs) from parton approach. These QSLs share the same projective symmetry group and are characterized by certain numbers of symmetry-protected Majorana cones in their low-energy excitation spectrum. We illustrate that the physical properties of the QSLs are dependent on the information of the cones. Using the $\pmb k\cdot\pmb p$ method, we analyze the c…
By using a combination of heteroepitaxial growth, structure refinement based on synchrotron x-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations, we show that the symmetry-protected Dirac line nodes in the topological semimetallic perovskite SrIrO3 can be lifted simply by applying epitaxial constraints. In particular, the Dirac gap opens without breaking the Pbnm mirror symmetry. In virtue of a symmetry-breaking analysis, we demonstrate that the original symmetry protection is related to the n-glide operation, which can be selectively broken by different heteroepitaxial structures. This symmetr…

Topological phases in magnetic materials offer novel tunability of topological properties via varying the underlying magnetism. We show that three dimensional Kitaev materials can provide a great opportunity for controlling symmetry-protected topological nodal magnons. These materials are originally considered as strong candidates for the Kitaev quantum spin liquid due to the bond-dependent frustrating spin exchange interactions. As a concrete example, we consider the symmetry and topology of the magnons in the canted zig-zag ordered state in the hyperhoneycomb $β\text{-}\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$, w…
We study the topological properties of magnon excitations in three-dimensional antiferromagnets, where the ground state configuration is invariant under time-reversal followed by space-inversion ($PT$-symmetry). We prove that Dirac points and nodal lines, the former being the limiting case of the latter, are the generic forms of symmetry-protected band crossings between magnon branches. As a concrete example, we study a Heisenberg spin model for a "spin-web" compound, Cu$_3$TeO$_6$, and show the presence of the magnon Dirac points assuming a collinear magnetic structure. Upon turning on symmet…
For a gapped disordered many-body system with both internal and translation symmetry, one can define the corresponding weak and strong Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases. A strong SPT phase is protected by the internal symmetry $G$ only while a weak SPT phase, fabricated by alignment of strong SPT state in a lower dimension, requires additional discrete translation symmetry protection. In this paper, we construct a phase transition between weak and strong SPT phase in strongly interacting boson system. The starting point of our construction is the superconducting Dirac fermions with p…
Topological nodal superconductors possess gapless low energy excitations that are characterized by point or line nodal Fermi surfaces. In this work, using a coupled wire construction, we study topological nodal superconductors that have protected Dirac nodal points. In this construction, the low-energy electronic degrees of freedom are confined in a three dimensional array of wires, which emerge as pairing vortices of a microscopic superconducting system. The vortex array harbors an antiferromagnetic time-reversal and a mirror glide symmetry that protect the massless Dirac fermion in the singl…
We discuss a general diagnosis scheme for topological nodal lines protected by time-reversal symmetry and space-inversion symmetry, in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that when a shallow band inversion (with a small inverted gap) appears at the $Γ$-point in the Brillouin zone, nodal lines are generated along with the inversion. Much information on the types and numbers of these nodal lines can be related to the rotation eigenvalues and inversion eigenvalues of the inverted bands. In addition, we establish a $\mathbb{Z}$-type monopole charge for nodal lines with fourfold or sixf…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on layered ternary compounds ZrGeXc (Xc = S, Se, and Te) with square Ge lattices. ARPES measurements with bulk-sensitive soft-x-ray photons revealed a quasi-two-dimensional bulk-band structure with the bulk nodal loops protected by glide mirror symmetry of the crystal lattice. Moreover, high-resolution ARPES measurements near the Fermi level with vacuum-ultraviolet photons combined with first-principles band-structure calculations elucidated a Dirac-node-arc surface state traversing a tiny spin-orbit gap associated with the no…
Using first--principles density functional calculations, we systematically investigate electronic structures and topological properties of InNbX2 (X=S, Se). In the absence of spin--orbit coupling (SOC), both compounds show nodal lines protected by mirror symmetry. Including SOC, the Dirac rings in InNbS2 split into two Weyl rings. This unique property is distinguished from other dicovered nodal line materials which normally requires the absence of SOC. On the other hand, SOC breaks the nodal lines in InNbSe2 and the compound becomes a type II Weyl semimetal with 12 Weyl points in the Brillouin…
Topological semimetals are characterized by protected crossings between conduction and valence bands. These materials have recently attracted significant interest because of the deep connections to high-energy physics, the novel topological surface states, and the unusual transport phenomena. While Dirac and Weyl semimetals have been extensively studied, the nodal-line semimetal remains largely unexplored due to the lack of an ideal material platform. In this paper, we report the magneto-transport properties of two nodal-line semimetal candidates CaAgAs and CaCdGe. First, our single crystallin…
Unlike the hole-doped cuprates, both nodal and nodeless superconductivity (SC) are observed in the electron-doped cuprates. To understand these two types of SC states, we propose a unified theory by considering the two-dimensional t-J model in proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordering state. Within the slave-boson mean-field approximation, the d-wave pairing symmetry is still the most energetically favorable even in the presence of the external AF field. In the nodal phase, it is found that the nodes carry vorticity and are protected by the adjoint symmetry of time-reversal an…
Topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSMs) are materials whose conduction and valence bands cross each other, meeting a topologically-protected closed loop rather than discrete points in the Brillouin zone (BZ). The anticipated properties for TNLSMs include drumhead-like nearly flat surface states, unique Landau energy levels, special collective modes, long-range Coulomb interactions, or the possibility of realizing high-temperature superconductivity. Recently, SrAs3 has been theoretically proposed and then experimentally confirmed to be a TNLSM. Here, we report high-pressure experiments on Sr…
We show that chiral (nearly) flat band superconductivity can develop and host novel Majorana fermions at a time-reversal pair of symmetry-protected three-band crossing points. Based on symmetry analysis, mean-field study, and superfluid stiffness calculation, we determine and analyze the irreducible pairing channels with flat band pairings in the low-energy spin-$1$ fermion theory. Flat band pairing can enhance superconductivity dramatically, where the critical temperature scales linearly in the interaction strength. While fully gapped flat band pairing states develop in the single-component p…
By utilizing symmetry analysis and electronic structure calculations, we investigated the low-temperature orthorhombic phase of Ag$_{2}$Se in ${\cal SG}$~17. In addition to the discovery of a nodal plane at $k_{z}=π$ protected by the joint operation of time-reversal (${\cal T}$) and the 2-fold screw rotation $S_{2z}$, we found 24 Weyl points mainly residing at the $k_{y}=0$ plane with notable Fermi arc and large quasiparticle interference pattern (QPI). Due to the absence of mirror symmetry, a pair of Weyl points with opposite chirality reside at different binding energies, which makes this sy…
We introduce the concept of 3D Dirac (Weyl) superconductors (SC), which have protected bulk four(two)-fold nodal points and surface Andreev arcs at zero energy. We provide a sufficient criterion for realizing them in centrosymmetric SCs with odd-parity pairing and mirror symmetry, e.g., the nodal phases of Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Pairs of Dirac nodes appear in a mirror-invariant plane when the mirror winding number is nontrivial. Breaking mirror symmetry may gap Dirac nodes producing a topological SC. Each Dirac node evolves to a nodal ring when inversion-gauge symmetry is broken. A Dirac node may…
We describe the symmetry protected nodal points that can exist in magnetic space groups and show that only 3-, 6-, and 8-fold degeneracies are possible (in addition to the 2- and 4-fold degeneracies that have already been studied.) The 3- and 6-fold degeneracies are derived from "spin-1" Weyl fermions. The 8-fold degeneracies come in different flavors. In particular, we distinguish between 8-fold fermions that realize non-chiral "Rarita-Schwinger fermions" and those that can be described as four degenerate Weyl fermions. We list the (magnetic and non-magnetic) space groups where these exotic f…
Topological semimetals are three dimensional materials with symmetry-protected massless bulk excitations. As a special case, Weyl nodal-line semimetals are realized in materials either having no inversion or broken time-reversal symmetry and feature bulk nodal lines. The 111-family of materials, LaNiSi, LaPtSi and LaPtGe (all lacking inversion symmetry), belong to this class. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation with thermodynamic measurements, we find that these materials exhibit a fully-gapped superconducting ground state, while spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry a…
