We investigate the problem of practical output regulation, i.e., to design a controller that brings the system output in the vicinity of a desired target value while keeping the other variables bounded. We consider uncertain systems that are possibly nonlinear and the uncertainty of their linear parts is modeled element-wise through a parametric family of matrix boxes. An optimization-based design procedure is proposed that delivers a continuous-time control and estimates the maximal regulation error. We also analyze an event-triggered emulation of this controller, which can be implemented on a digital platform, along with an explicit estimates of the regulation error.
In this paper, we consider the event-triggered cooperative robust practical output regulation problem for a class of linear minimum-phase multi-agent systems. We first convert our problem into the cooperative robust practical stabilization problem of a well defined augmented system Based on the distributed internal model approach. Then, we design a distributed event-triggered output feedback control law together with a distributed output-based event-triggered mechanism to stabilize the augmented system, which leads to the solvability of the cooperative robust practical output regulation proble…
In this paper, we study the event-triggered global robust practical output regulation problem for a class of nonlinear systems in output feedback form with any relative degree. Our approach consists of the following three steps. First, we design an internal model and an observer to form the so-called extended augmented system. Second, we convert the original problem into the event-triggered global robust practical stabilization problem of the extended augmented system. Third, we design an output-based event-triggered control law and a Zeno-free output-based event-triggered mechanism to solve t…
This paper studies the event-triggered cooperative global robust output regulation problem for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems via a distributed internal model design. We show that our problem can be solved practically in the sense that the ultimate bound of the tracking error can be made arbitrarily small by adjusting a design parameter in the proposed event-triggered mechanism. Our result offers a few new features. First, our control law is robust against both external disturbances and parameter uncertainties, which are allowed to belong to some arbitrarily large prescribed compact …
This paper proposes a data-driven framework to solve time-varying optimization problems associated with unknown linear dynamical systems. Making online control decisions to regulate a dynamical system to the solution of an optimization problem is a central goal in many modern engineering applications. Yet, the available methods critically rely on a precise knowledge of the system dynamics, thus mandating a preliminary system identification phase before a controller can be designed. In this work, we leverage results from behavioral theory to show that the steady-state transfer function of a lin…

This paper proposes a distributed scheme with different estimators for the event-triggered formation control of polytopic homogeneously scheduled linear parameter-varying (LPV) multi-agent systems (MAS). Each agent consists of a time-triggered inner feedback loop and a larger event-triggered outer feedback loop to track a formation reference signal and reject input and output noise. If a local event-trigger condition is violated, the event-triggered outer feedback loop is closed through the communication network. The event-trigger condition is only based on locally available information. To de…
This paper shows how the theory of adaptive observers can be effectively used in the design internal models for nonlinear output regulation. The main result obtained in this way is a new method for the synthesis of adaptive internal models which substantially enhances the existing theory of adaptive output regulation, by allowing nonlinear internal models and more general classes of controlled plants.
We present an adaptive event-triggered boundary control scheme for a parabolic PDE-ODE system, where the reaction coefficient of the parabolic PDE, and the system parameter of a scalar ODE, are unknown. In the proposed controller, the parameter estimates, which are built by batch least-square identification, are recomputed and the plant states are resampled simultaneously. As a result, both the parameter estimates and the control input employ piecewise-constant values. In the closed-loop system, the following results are proved: 1) the absence of a Zeno phenomenon; 2) finite-time exact identif…
In this paper, we investigate the problem of designing event-triggered controllers for containing epidemic processes in complex networks. We focus on a deterministic susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model, which is one of the well-known, fundamental models that capture the epidemic spreading. The event-triggered control is particularly formulated in the context of viral spreading, in which control inputs (e.g., the amount of medical treatments, a level of traffic regulations) for each subpopulation are updated only when the fraction of the infected people in the subpopulation exceeds a p…
This article provides an introduction to event-triggered coordination for multi-agent average consensus. We provide a comprehensive account of the motivations behind the use of event-triggered strategies for consensus, the methods for algorithm synthesis, the technical challenges involved in establishing desirable properties of the resulting implementations, and their applications in distributed control. We pay special attention to the assumptions on the capabilities of the network agents and the resulting features of the algorithm execution, including the interconnection topology, the evaluat…

We consider a network of agents whose objective is for the aggregate of their states to converge to a solution of a linear program in standard form. Each agent has limited information about the problem data and can communicate with other agents at discrete time instants of their choosing. Our main contribution is the synthesis of a distributed dynamics and a set of state-based rules, termed triggers, that individual agents use to determine when to opportunistically broadcast their state to neighboring agents to ensure asymptotic convergence to a solution of the linear program. Our technical ap…
This paper considers the robustness of event-triggered control of general linear systems against additive or multiplicative frequency-domain uncertainties. It is revealed that in static or dynamic event triggering mechanisms, the sampling errors are images of affine operators acting on the sampled outputs. Though not belonging to $\mathcal{RH}_\infty$, these operators are finite-gain $\mathcal{L}_2$ stable with operator-norm depending on the triggering conditions and the norm bound of the uncertainties. This characterization is further extended to the general integral quadratic constraint (IQC…
This paper considers a collection of networked nonlinear dynamical systems, and addresses the synthesis of feedback controllers that seek optimal operating points corresponding to the solution of network-wide constrained optimization problems. Particular emphasis is placed on the solution of semidefinite programs (SDPs). The design of the feedback controller is grounded on a dual epsilon-subgradient approach, with the dual iterates utilized to dynamically update the dynamical-system reference signals. Global convergence is guaranteed for diminishing stepsize rules, even when the reference inpu…
This paper investigates the synthesis of distributed economic control algorithms under which dynamically coupled physical systems are regulated to a variational equilibrium of a constrained convex game. We study two complementary cases: (i) each subsystem is linear and controllable; and (ii) each subsystem is nonlinear and in the strict-feedback form. The convergence of the proposed algorithms is guaranteed using Lyapunov analysis. Their performance is verified by two case studies on a multi-zone building temperature regulation problem and an optimal power flow problem, respectively.
The AC frequency in electrical power systems is conventionally regulated by synchronous machines. The gradual replacement of these machines by asynchronous renewable-based generation, which provides little or no frequency control, increases system uncertainty and the risk of instability. This imposes hard limits on the proportion of renewables that can be integrated into the system. In this paper we address this issue by developing a framework for performing frequency control in power systems with arbitrary mixes of conventional and renewable generation. Our approach is based on a robust stabi…
