The bond-nematic state has both long-range ordering of magnetic quadrupoles and the high entanglement typical of spin liquids, and as such can be thought of as a spin liquid crystal. One of the most promising materials in which to find such a state is BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$, in which a magnetically silent phase has been found between a magnetically ordered low-field phase and the high-field polarised phase. Here I study the magnetic Hamiltonian of BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$, and, for the Hamiltonian-parameters determined by fits to inelastic neutron scattering experiments, show that magnons condense out of the polarised state as bound pairs. This is direct theoretical support for the existence of a bond-nematic state just below the saturation field.
We report neutron scattering and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of the 2D spin-1/2 frustrated magnet BaCdVO(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$. At temperatures well below $T_{\sf N}\approx 1K$, we show that only 34 % of the spin moment orders in an up-up-down-down strip structure. Dominant magnetic diffuse scattering and comparison to published $μ$sr measurements indicates that the remaining 66 % is fluctuating. This demonstrates the presence of strong frustration, associated with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and points to a subtle ordering mechanism driven by magnon inter…
The long-range forces between holes in an antiferromagnet are due to magnon exchange. The one-magnon exchange potential between two holes is proportional to cos(2ϕ)/r^2 where r is the distance vector of the holes and ϕis the angle between r and an axis of the square crystal lattice. One-magnon exchange leads to bound states of holes with antiparallel spins resembling d-wave symmetry. The role of these bound states as potential candidates for the preformed Cooper pairs of high-temperature superconductivity is discussed qualitatively.
We analyze the properties of magnons in metallic electron systems with spiral magnetic order. Our analysis is based on the random phase approximation for the susceptibilities of tight binding electrons with a local Hubbard interaction in two or three dimensions. We identify three magnon branches from poles in the susceptibilities, one associated with in-plane, the other two associated with out-of-plane fluctuations of the spiral order parameter. We derive general expressions for the spin stiffnesses and the spectral weights of the magnon modes, from which also the magnon velocities can be obta…
Here we report on the formation of two and three magnon bound states in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet $α$-NaMnO$_2$, where the single-ion, uniaxial anisotropy inherent to the Mn$^{3+}$ ions in this material provides a binding mechanism capable of stabilizing higher order magnon bound states. While such states have long remained elusive in studies of antiferromagnetic chains, neutron scattering data presented here demonstrate that higher order $n>2$ composite magnons exist, and, specifically, that a weak three-magnon bound state is detected below the antiferromagnetic ordering trans…
We have constructed a systematic low-energy effective theory for hole- and electron-doped antiferromagnets, where holes reside in momentum space pockets centered at $(\pm\fracπ{2a},\pm\fracπ{2a})$ and where electrons live in pockets centered at $(\fracπ{a},0)$ or $(0,\fracπ{a})$. The effective theory is used to investigate the magnon-mediated binding between two holes or two electrons in an otherwise undoped system. We derive the one-magnon exchange potential from the effective theory and then solve the corresponding two-quasiparticle Schrödinger equation. As a result, we find bound state wave…
The role of dynamical magneto-elastic coupling in spin-Peierls chains is investigated by numerical and analytical techniques. We show that a Heisenberg spin chain coupled to dynamical optical phonons exhibits a transition towards a spontaneously dimerized state in a wide range of parameter space. The low energy excitations are characterized as solitons. No binding between solitons occurs in the isolated spin-phonon chain and the dynamical spin structure factor shows a broad magnon dispersion. However, elastic interchain coupling can lead to the formation of bound states.
Using semiclassical method combined with stereographic projection approach, we investigate the magnetic dynamics of the skyrmion crystal (SkX), formed in planar ferromagnet with both Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and uniform magnetic field. The topologically non-trivial ground state of SkX is described in stereographic projection by the complex valued function with simple poles at skyrmions' positions. We use the earlier proposed ansatz for this ground state function in the form of the sum of individual skyrmions. The dynamics follows from the second variation of the classical action. Nume…
We study the electron spin resonance in a dilute magnon gas that is realized in a ferromagnetic spin system at low temperature. A quantum cluster expansion is developed to show that the frequency shift of the single-magnon peak changes its sign and the linewidth reaches its maximum across a scattering resonance between magnons. Such characteristic behaviors are universal and can be used to experimentally locate the two-magnon resonance when an external parameter such as pressure is varied. Future achievement of the two-magnon resonance may have an impact comparable to the Feshbach resonance in…
The two-magnon problem for the frustrated XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian and external magnetic fields exceeding the saturation field Bs is considered. We show that the problem can be exactly mapped onto an effective tight-binding impurity problem. It allows to obtain explicit exact expressions for the two-magnon Green's functions for arbitrary dimension and number of interactions. We apply this theory to a quasi-one dimensional helimagnet with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor J1 < 0 and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor J2 > 0 interactions. An outstanding feature of the excitation spe…
The ground state of the two-leg Heisenberg ladder is identified as an RVB type spin liquid, which is generated by Gutzwiller projection of tight-binding bands with flux pi per plaquet. Explicit trial wave functions for the magnon and hole excitations are formulated in terms of spinons and holons.
A hole in a two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet was believed to be infinitely heavy due to the string of wrongly oriented spins it creates as it moves, which should trap it near its original location. Trugman showed that, in fact, the hole acquires a finite effective mass due to contributions from so-called {\it Trugman loop} processes, where the hole goes nearly twice around closed loops, first creating and then removing wrongly-oriented spins, and ending up at a different lattice site. This generates effective second- and third-nearest-neighbor hopping terms which keep the quasiparticle on…
We develop a numerically exact scheme for resumming certain classes of Feynman diagrams in the self-consistent perturbation expansion for the electron and magnon self-energies in the nonequilibrium Green function formalism applied to a coupled electron-magnon (\mbox{e-m}) system which is driven out of equilibrium by the applied finite bias voltage. Our scheme operates with the electronic and magnonic GFs and the corresponding self-energies viewed as matrices in the Keldysh space, rather than conventionally extracting their retarded and lesser components. This is employed to understand the effe…
It is a widely accepted view that the interplay of spin- and charge-degrees of freedom in doped antiferromagnets (AFMs) gives rise to the rich physics of high-temperature superconductors. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how effective low-energy degrees of freedom and the corresponding field theories emerge from microscopic models, including the $t-J$ and Hubbard Hamiltonians. A promising view comprises that the charge carriers have a rich internal parton structure on intermediate scales, but the interplay of the emergent partons with collective magnon excitations of the surrounding AFM remain…
Magnetic frustration can lead to peculiar magnetic orderings that break a discrete symmetry of the lattice in addition to the fundamental magnetic symmetries (i.e., spin rotation invariance and time-reversal symmetry). In this work, we focus on frustrated quantum magnets and study the nature of the quantum phase transition between a paramagnet and a magnetically ordered state with broken threefold ($Z_3$) crystal rotation symmetry. We predict the transition to happen in two stages, giving rise to an intermediate nematic phase in which rotation symmetry is broken but the system remains magnetic…
We provide a route to generate nematic order in a spin-1/2 system. Unlike the well-known magnon-binding mechanism, our spin nematics requires neigher the frustration effect nor a spin polarization in a high field or in the vicinity of a ferromagnet, but instead appears next to the spin singlet phase. We start from a state consisting of a quantum spin-1/2 singlet dimer placed on each site of a triangular lattice, and show that inter-dimer ring exchange interactions efficiently dope the SU(2) triplets that itinerate and interact, easily driving a stable singlet state to either Bose Einstein cond…
We study the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor J_1 and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor J_2 exchange couplings in the presence of magnetic field. We use both numerical approaches (the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalization) and effective field-theory approach, and obtain the ground-state phase diagram for wide parameter range of the coupling ratio J_1/J_2. The phase diagram is rich and has a variety of phases, including the vector chiral phase, the nematic phase, and other multipolar phases. In the vect…
A magnetostatic spin wave analog of integer quantum Hall (IQH) state is proposed in realistic patterned ferromagnetic thin films. Due to magnetic shape anisotropy, magnetic moments in a thin film lie within the plane, while all spin-wave excitations are fully gapped. Under an out-of-plane magnetic field, the film acquires a finite magnetization, where some of the gapped magnons become significantly softened near a saturation field. It is shown that, owing to a spin-orbit locking nature of the magnetic dipolar interaction, these soft spin-wave volume-mode bands become chiral volume-mode bands w…
