At an interface between a topological insulator (TI) and a conventional superconductor (SC), superconductivity has been predicted to change dramatically and exhibit novel correlations. In particular, the induced superconductivity by an $s$-wave SC in a TI can develop an order parameter with a $p$-wave component. Here we present experimental evidence for an unexpected proximity-induced novel superconducting state in a thin layer of the prototypical TI, Bi$_2$Se$_3$, proximity coupled to Nb. From depth-resolved magnetic field measurements below the superconducting transition temperature of Nb, we observe a local enhancement of the magnetic field in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ that exceeds the externally applied field, thus supporting the existence of an intrinsic paramagnetic Meissner effect arising from an odd-frequency superconducting state. Our experimental results are complemented by theoretical calculations supporting the appearance of such a component at the interface which extends into the TI. This state is topologically distinct from the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state it originates from. To the best of our knowledge, these findings present a first observation of bulk odd-frequency superconductivity in a TI. We thus reaffirm the potential of the TI-SC interface as a versatile platform to produce novel superconducting states.
Mixing of topological states with superconductivity could result in topological superconductivity with the elusive Majorana fermions potentially applicable in fault-tolerant quantum computing. One possible candidate considered for realization of topological superconductivity is thin bismuth films on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). Here, we present angle-resolved and core-level photoemission spectroscopy studies of thin Bi films grown {\it in-situ} on as-grown Bi2212 that show the absence of proximity effect. We find that the electron transfer from the film to the substrate and the resu…
We show how in principle a coherent coupling between two superconductors of opposite parity can be realized in a three-layer oxide heterostructure. Due to strong intraionic spin-orbit coupling in the middle layer, singlet Cooper pairs are converted into triplet ones and vice versa. This results in a large enhancement of the triplet superconductivity, persisting well above the native triplet critical temperature.
We consider the proximity effects in hybrid superconductor (S) - ferromagnet (F) structures drawing attention to the induced ferromagnetism of the S metal. The analysis is based on a quasiclassical theory of proximity effect for metals in the dirty limit conditions. It is shown that, below the superconducting critical temperature, ferromagnetic correlations extend a distance of order of the superconducting coherence length ξ_{S} into the superconductor, being dependent on the S/F interface parameters. We argue that the properties of mesoscopic SF hybrids may drastically depend upon the magneti…
Point contact conductance measurements on topological $Bi_2Te_2Se$ and $Bi_2Se_3$ films reveal a signature of superconductivity below 2-3 K. In particular, critical current dips and a robust zero bias conductance peak are observed. The latter suggests the presence of zero energy bound states which could be assigned to Majorana Fermions in an unconventional topological superconductor. We attribute these novel observations to proximity induced local superconductivity in the films by small amounts of superconducting Bi inclusions or segregation to the surface, and provide supportive evidence for …
Reentrant behavior is known to exist and magnetic-field-induced superconductivity has been predicted in superconductors with Kondo impurities. We present a simple framework for understanding these phenomena and generalize it to explain the long-standing puzzle of paramagnetic reentrance in thick proximity systems as due to small amounts of Kondo impurities.
We report density functional theory calculations for the parent compound LaOFeAs of the newly discovered 26K Fe-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs. We find that the ground state is an ordered antiferromagnet, with staggered moment about 2.3$μ_B$, on the border with the Mott insulating state. We fit the bands crossing the Fermi surface, derived from Fe and As, to a tight-binding Hamiltonian using maximally localized Wannier functions on Fe 3d and As 4p orbitals. The model Hamiltonian accurately describes the Fermi surface obtained via first-principles calculations. Due to the evident pro…
Understanding the coexistence, competition and/or cooperation between superconductivity and charge density waves (CDWs) in the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is an elusive goal which, when realized, promises to reveal fundamental information on this important class of materials. Here, we use four-terminal current-voltage measurements to study the Van der Waals interface between freshly exfoliated flakes of the high-$T_{c}$ superconductor, Bi-2212, and the CDW-dominated TMD layered material, 1T-TaS$_{2}$. For highly transparent barriers, there is a pronounced Andreev reflection feature…
We present a detailed analysis on the hopping between monolayer CuO$_2$ and bulk CuO$_2$ plane in the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ substrate. With a two-band model, we demonstrate that the nodeless gap can only exist when the hole concentration in monolayer CuO$_2$ plane is very large or very small. We argued that the possible phase separation may play important role in the recent experimental observation of nodeless gap.
Effects of inhomogeneous doping on the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors are studied within the framework of the t-J model. Especially, the boundary between two non-superconducting regions with doping rates much higher and lower than the optimal one is examined. It is found that, although there is no superconductivity in the bulk, a superconducting region appears at the boundary because singlet resonating valence bond order and holon condensation occur simultaneously in this region. The critical temperature of the induced superconductivity can be higher than that of the optimally doped sample…
To understand the recently observed high temperature superconductivity in the monolayer CuO$_2$ grown on the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ substrates, we propose a two band model of the hybridized oxygen $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals with the proximity effect of the substrate. We demonstrate that both the nodal and nodeless d-wave superconducting states can be induced by the proximity effect, depending on the strengths of the pairing parameters.
In this letter we report on proximity superconductivity induced in CdTe-HgTe core-shell nanowires, a quasi-one-dimensional heterostructure of the topological insulator HgTe. We demonstrate a Josephson supercurrent in our nanowires contacted with superconducting Al leads. The observation of a sizable $I_c R_n$ product, a positive excess current and multiple Andreev reflections up to fourth order further indicate a high interface quality of the junctions.
Using a prototype model for proximity induced superconductivity on a bilayer square lattice, we show that interlayer tunneling can drive change in topology of the Bogoliubov quasiparticle bands. Starting with topologically trivial superconductors, transitions to a non-trivial $p_x + {\rm i} p_y$ state and back to another trivial state are discovered. We characterize these phases in terms of edge-state spectra and Chern indices. We show that these transitions can also be controlled by experimentally viable control parameters, the bandwidth of the metallic layer and the gate potential. Insights …
When a topological insulator is made into a nanowire, the interplay between topology and size quantization gives rise to peculiar one-dimensional states whose energy dispersion can be manipulated by external fields. In the presence of proximity-induced superconductivity, these 1D states offer a tunable platform for Majorana zero modes. While the existence of such peculiar 1D states has been experimentally confirmed, the realization of robust proximity-induced superconductivity in topological-insulator nanowires remains a challenge. Here, we report the realization of superconducting topological…
The structural evolution and superconductivity of a 122-type solid solution Sr1-xBaxNi2P2 were studied. We found that an orthorhombic-tetragonal structural phase transition takes place at x = 0.5, and is characterized by the P-P dimers breaking. The superconducting transition temperature exhibited its highest value of 2.85 K at x = 0.4.
Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on the new layered cobalt oxide superconductor Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O and its parent, non-superconducting compounds, have revealed unconventional nature of superconductivity through: (1) a small superfluid energy which implies a surprisingly high effective mass of the charge carriers, approximately 100 times the bare electron mass; (2) the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ scaling with the superfluid energy following the correlations found in high-$T_{c}$ cuprate and some other two-dimensional superconductors; (3) an anisotro…
We investigate the influence of critical spin fluctuations on electromagnetic responses in the odd-frequency superconductivity. It is shown that the Meissner kernel of the odd-frequency superconductivity is strongly reduced by the critical spin fluctuation or the massless spin wave mode in the antiferromagnetic phase. These results imply that the superfluid density is reduced, and the London penetration depth is lengthened for the odd-frequency pairing. It is also shown that the zero field Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing is spontaneously realized both for even- and odd-frequency in th…
In order to clarify whether the odd-frequency superconductivity can be realized or not, we study a quasi-one-dimensional triangular lattice in the Hubbard model using the random phase approximation (RPA) and the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation. We find that odd-frequency spin-singlet p-wave pairing can be enhanced on a quasi-one-dimensional isosceles triangular lattice.
The diamagnetism of platinum metals (N: Rh, Pt, Pd), which is induced by the proximity effect of a superconductor (S: Nb), has been investigated for N-S double layers. Notwithstanding the strong spin fluctuation in platinum metals, the screening distance ρin N increases with a decrease in temperature and reaches a value which is expected in comparison with ρin Cu. When magnetic impurities are included in N, the proximity effect is drastically suppressed and the paramagnetism due to a giant moment is observed.
Proximity effect facilitates the penetration of Cooper pairs that permits superconductivity in normal metal, offerring a promising approach to turn heterogeneous materials into superconducting and develop exceptional quantum phenomena. Here, we have systematically investigated proximity-induced anisotropic superconductivity in monolayer Ni-Pb binary alloy by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/ spectroscopy(STM/STS) with theoretical calculations. By means of high temperature growth, the(3root3by3root3)R30o Ni-Pb surface alloy has been fabricated on the Pb(111), where the appearance of doma…
The Adriatico Research Conference on Superconductivity, Andreev Reflection, and Proximity Effect in Mesoscopic Structures took place at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, July 8-11, 1997. The organizers were Elias Burstein, Leonid Glazman, Teun Klapwijk, and Subodh R. Shenoy. We describe some of the central issues discussed at the conference, along with more personal reflections prompted by new developments.
One-dimensional systems proximity-coupled to a superconductor can be driven into a topological superconducting phase by an external magnetic field. Here, we investigate the effect of vortices created by the magnetic field in a type-II superconductor providing the proximity effect. We identify different ways in which the topological protection of Majorana modes can be compromised and discuss strategies to circumvent these detrimental effects. Our findings are also relevant to topological phases of proximitized quantum Hall edge states.
Transport measurements in ramp-type junctions of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y-SrRuO_3-YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ with $T_c$ values of either 80-90 K or 60-70 K are reported. In both type of junctions but without a barrier ("shorts"), the supercurrent densities at 4.2 K reached 7.5 and 3.5 MA/cm$^2$, respectively, indicating the high quality of the fabrication process. Plots of the critical current versus thickness of the ferromagnetic barrier at 4.2 K show exponential decays with decay lengths of 1.1 nm for the 90 K phase and 1.4 nm for the 60 K phase, which are much shorter than the relevant coherence lengths $ξ_F\sim 5…
We establish the existence of bulk odd-frequency superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and show that an intrinsic Kerr effect is a direct evidence of this state. We use both general two- and three-orbital models, as well as a realistic tight-binding description of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ to demonstrate that odd-frequency pairing arises due to finite hybridization between different orbitals in the normal state, and is further enhanced by finite inter-orbital pairing.
The introduction of superconductivity to the Dirac surface states of a topological insulator leads to a topological superconductor, which may support topological quantum computing through Majorana zero modes. The development of a scalable material platform is key to the realization of topological quantum computing. Here we report on the growth and properties of high-quality (Bi,Sb)2Te3/graphene/gallium heterostructures. Our synthetic approach enables atomically sharp layers at both hetero-interfaces, which in turn promotes proximity-induced superconductivity that originates in the gallium film…
We explore the role of proximity-induced odd-frequency pairing in the thermoelectricity of a ferromagnet when coupled to a conventional $s$-wave spin-singlet superconductor through a spin-active interface. By varying both the polarization and its direction in the ferromagnet and the interfacial spin-orbit interaction strength, we analyze the behavior of all proximity-induced pair amplitudes in the ferromagnet and their contributions to the thermoelectric coefficients. Based on our results for the Seebeck coefficient, we predict that odd-frequency spin-triplet Cooper pairs are much efficient th…
Bilayer Moiré structures are a highly tunable laboratory to investigate the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. Moiré transition metal dichalcogenides at low-energies, in particular, are believed to be described by a single narrow band Hubbard model on a triangular lattice with spin-orbit coupling. Motivated by recent experimental evidence for superconductivity in twisted bilayer materials, we investigate the possible superconducting pairings in a two-dimensional single band Rashba-Hubbard model. Using a random-phase approximation in the presence of nearest and next-nearest neighb…
We study how non-helical spin textures at the boundary between a topological insulator (TI) and a superconductor (SC) affect the proximity-induced superconductivity of the TI interface state. We consider TIs coupled to both spin-singlet and spin-triplet SCs, and show that for the spin-triplet parent SCs the resulting order parameter induced onto the interface state sensitively depends on the symmetries which are broken at the TI-SC boundary. For chiral spin-triplet parent SCs, we find that nodal proximity-induced superconductivity emerges when there is broken twofold rotational symmetry which …
Due to the non-trivial topological band structure in type-II Weyl semimetal Tungsten ditelluride (WTe2), unconventional properties may emerge in its superconducting phase. While realizing intrinsic superconductivity has been challenging in the type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2, proximity effect may open an avenue for the realization of superconductivity. Here, we report the observation of proximity-induced superconductivity with a long coherence length along c axis in WTe2 thin flakes based on a WTe2/NbSe2 van der Waals heterostructure. Interestingly, we also observe anomalous oscillations of the di…
We study proximity-induced superconductivity in gold nanowires as a function of the length of the nanowire, magnetic field, and excitation current. Short nanowires exhibit a sharp superconducting transition, whereas long nanowires show nonzero resistance. At intermediate lengths, however, we observe two sharp transitions; the normal and superconducting regions are separated by what we call the mini-gap phase. Additionally, we detect periodic oscillations in the differential magnetoresistance. We provide a theoretical model for the mini-gap phase as well as the periodic oscillations in terms of…
Thin film junctions and bilayers of the doped topological insulator $\rm Bi_2Se_3$ and the s-wave superconductor NbN were found to exhibit conductance spectra with prominent zero bias and coherence peaks. Various tunneling models with different pair potentials have failed to fit our data, except for the triplet $p_x+ip_y$ pair potential, which breaks time reversal symmetry, but yielded reasonably good fits. This provides evidence for proximity induced triplet superconductivity in the $\rm Bi_2Se_3$ layer near the interface with the NbN film.
We formulate a general framework for addressing both odd- and even-frequency superconductivity in Dirac semimetals and demonstrate that the odd-frequency or the Berezinskii pairing can naturally appear in these materials because of the chirality degree of freedom. We show that repulsive frequency-dependent interactions favor the Berezinskii pairing while an attractive electron-electron interaction allows for the BCS pairing. In the case of compensated Dirac and Weyl semimetals, both the conventional BCS and odd-frequency Berezinskii pairings require critical coupling. Since these pairings coul…
We study proximity induced triplet superconductivity in a spin-orbit-coupled system, and show that the \textbf{d} vector of the induced triplet superconductivity undergoes precession that can be controlled by varying the relative strengths of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. In particular, a long-range spin-triplet helix is predicted when these two spin-orbit couplings have equal strengths. We also study the Josephson junction geometry and show that a transition between 0 and $π$ junctions can be induced by controlling the spin-orbit coupling with a gate voltage. An experimental se…
We study theoretically the vortex matter structure in low dimensional (LD) systems with superconducting order induced by proximity to a bulk superconductor. We analyze the effects of microscopic coupling mechanisms between the two systems and the effects of possible mismatch in the band structures of these materials on the energy spectrum of vortex-core electrons. The unusual structure of vortex cores is discussed in the context of recent tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy experiments.
Interest in the superconducting proximity effect has been reinvigorated recently by novel optoelectronic applications as well as by the possible emergence of the elusive Majorana fermion at the interface between topological insulators and superconductors. Here we produce high-temperature superconductivity in Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 via proximity to Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, in order to access increasing temperature and energy scales for this phenomenon. This was achieved by a new mechanical bonding technique we developed, enabling the fabrication of high-quality junctions between materials, unobtainable by c…
We show that dilute magnetic impurities in a conventional superconductor give origin to an odd-frequency component of superconductivity, manifesting itself in Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bands forming within the bulk superconducting gap. Our results are obtained in a general model solved within the dynamical mean field theory. By exploiting a disorder analysis and the limit to a single impurity, we are able to provide general expressions that can be used to extract explicitly the odd-frequency superconducting function from scanning tunneling measurements.
Superconducting topological crystalline insulators (TCI) are predicted to host new topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries, but available materials are insufficiently suitable for surface studies. To induce superconductivity at the surface of a prototypical TCI SnTe, we use molecular beam epitaxy to grow a heterostructure of SnTe and a high-Tc superconductor Fe(Te,Se), utilizing a 'buffer' layer to bridge the large lattice mismatch between SnTe and Fe(Te,Se). Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we measure a prominent spectral gap on the surface …
In the following paper we investigate the critical temperature $T_c$ behavior in the two-dimensional S/TI (S denotes superconductor and TI - topological insulator) junction with a proximity induced in-plane helical magnetization in the TI surface. The calculations of $T_c$ are performed using the general self-consistent approach based on the Usadel equations in Matsubara Green's functions technique. We show that the presence of the helical magnetization leads to the nonmonotonic behavior of the critical temperature as a function of the topological insulator layer thickness.
The structure of a proximity induced vortex core in a two-dimensional (2D) metallic layer covering a superconducting half-space is calculated. We predict formation of a multiple vortex core characterized by two-scale behavior of the local density of states (LDOS). For coherent tunnelling between the 2D layer and the bulk superconductor, the spectrum has two subgap branches while for incoherent tunnelling only one of them remains. The resulting splitting of the zero-bias anomaly and the multiple peak structure in the LDOS should be visible in the tunnelling spectroscopy experiments.
We study the interplay between proximity-induced superconductivity and ferromagnetism in graphene by self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations on the honeycomb lattice. We find that a strong triplet proximity effect is generated in graphene, leading to odd-frequency pairing correlations. These odd-frequency correlations are clearly manifested in the local density of states of the graphene sheet, which can be probed via STM-measurements. Motivated by recent experiments on S$\mid$N$\mid$S graphene Josephson junctions, we also study the spectrum of Andreev-bound states formed i…
Superconductivity is significantly enhanced in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO3, but not for multilayer films, in which large strength of nematicity develops. However, the link between the high-transition temperature superconductivity in monolayer and the correlation related nematicity in multilayer FeSe films is not well understood. Here, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study few-layer FeSe thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe an incommensurate long-range smectic phase, which solely appears in bilayer FeSe films. The smectic order still locally exists a…
Topological crystalline insulators represent a new state of matter, in which the electronic transport is governed by mirror-symmetry protected Dirac surface states. Due to the helical spin-polarization of these surface states, the proximity of topological crystalline matter to a nearby superconductor is predicted to induce unconventional superconductivity and thus to host Majorana physics. We report on the preparation and characterization of Nb-based superconducting quantum interference devices patterned on top of topological crystalline insulator SnTe thin films. The SnTe films show weak anti…
In this paper, we investigate the relation between odd-frequency pairing and proximity effect in non-uniform Kitaev chain systems with a particular interest in the topological critical point. First, we correlate the odd-frequency pairing and Majorana fermion in a semi-infinite Kitaev chain, where we find that the spatial dependence of the odd-frequency pair amplitude coincides with that of the local density of states at low frequencies. Second, we demonstrate that, contrary to the standard view, the odd-frequency pair amplitude spreads into the bulk of a semi-infinite Kitaev chain at the topol…
We investigate the effects of disorder characterising a superconducting thin film on the proximity-induced superconductivity generated by the film (in, e.g., a semiconductor) based on the exact numerical analysis of a three-dimensional microscopic model. To make the problem numerically tractable, we use a recursive Green's function method in combination with a patching approach that exploits the short-range nature of the interface Green's function in the presence of disorder. As a result of the Fermi surface mismatch between the superconductor (SC) and the semiconductor (SM) in combination wit…
We report on spatial measurements of the superconducting proximity effect in epitaxial graphene induced by a graphene-superconductor interface. Superconducting aluminum films were grown on epitaxial multilayer graphene on SiC. The aluminum films were discontinuous with networks of trenches in the film morphology reaching down to exposed graphene terraces. Scanning tunneling spectra measured on the graphene terraces show a clear decay of the superconducting energy gap with increasing separation from the graphene-aluminum edges. The spectra were well described by Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) …
We suggest a straightforward and unambiguous test to identify possible opposite signs of superconducting order parameter in different bands proposed for iron-based superconductors (s+- state). We consider proximity effect in a weakly coupled sandwich composed of a s+- superconductor and thin layer of s-wave superconductor. In such system the s-wave order parameter is coupled differently with different s+- gaps and it typically aligns with one of these gaps. This forces the other s+- gap to be anti-aligned with the s-wave gap. In such situation the aligned band induces a peak in the s-wave dens…
Interplay of superconductivity and magnetism in a composite prepared of the ferromagnetic half-metallic La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO (LSMO) nanoparticles and the conventional s-wave superconductor MgB_2 has been studied. A few principal effects have been found in bulk samples. With an onset of the MgB_2 superconductivity, a spectacular drop of the sample resistance has been detected and superconductivity has been observed at temperature up to 20K. Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy has been used to measure directly the superconducting energy coupling. For small voltage, an excess current and doubling of the…
We observe proximity-induced superconductivity in the \textit{in situ} prepared heterostructures constructed by topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films and high-temperature cuprate superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. The superconducting gap maximum is about 7.6 meV on the surface of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films with a thickness of two quintuple layers, and the gap value decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the quasiparticle interference data show a clear evidence of a twofold symmetric superconducting gap with gap minima along one pair of the pr…
A possibility of the realization of the p-wave spin-singlet superconductivity ($p$SS), whose gap function is odd both in momentum and in frequency, is investigated by solving the gap equation with the phenomenological interaction mediated by the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation. The $p$SS is realized prevailing over the d-wave singlet superconductivity ($d$SS) in the vicinity of antiferromagnetic quantum critical pint (QCP) both on the paramagnetic and on the antiferromagnetic sides. Off the QCP in the paramagnetic phase, however, the $d$SS with line-nodes is realized as \textit{conventional…
We study a proximity junction between a conventional s-wave superconductor and a conductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, with a specific focus on the spin structure of the induced pairing amplitude. We find that spin-triplet pairing correlations are induced by spin-orbit coupling in both one- and two-dimensional systems due to the lifted spin degeneracy. Additionally, this induced triplet pairing has a component with an odd frequency dependence that is robust to disorder. Our predictions are based on the solutions of the exact Gor'kov equations and are beyond the quasiclassical approximatio…
We use quasiclassical methods of superconductivity to study the superconducting proximity effect from a topological $p$-wave superconductor into a disordered one-dimensional metallic wire. We demonstrate that the corresponding Eilenberger equations with disorder reduce to a closed non-linear equation for the superconducting component of the matrix Green's function. Remarkably, this equation is formally equivalent to a classical mechanical system (i.e., Newton's equations), with the Green function corresponding to a coordinate of a fictitious particle and the coordinate along the wire correspon…
Hole gases in planar germanium can have high mobilities in combination with strong spin-orbit interaction and electrically tunable g-factors, and are therefore emerging as a promising platform for creating hybrid superconductor-semiconductor devices. A key challenge towards hybrid Ge-based quantum technologies is the design of high-quality interfaces and superconducting contacts that are robust against magnetic fields. In this work, by combining the assets of aluminum, which provides good contact to the Ge, and niobium, which has a significant superconducting gap, we demonstrate highly transpa…
We consider proximity effect coupling in Superconducting/Antiferromagnetic/Superconducting (S-A-S) sandwiches using the recently developed SO(5) effective theory of high temperature superconductivity. We find that, for narrow junctions, the A region acts like a strong superconductor, and that there is a critical junction thickness which depends on the effective SO(5) coupling constants and on the phase difference across the junction, at which the A region undergoes a Freedericksz-like transition to a state which is intermediate between superconductor and antiferromagnet. For thick junctions, t…
We report the realization of a hybrid superconductor-quantum dot device by means of top-down nanofabrication starting from a two dimensional electron gas in a InGaAs/InAlAs semiconductor heterostructure. The quantum dot is defined by electrostatic gates placed within the normal region of a planar Nb-InGaAs quantum well-Nb junction. Measurements in the regime of strong Coulomb blockade as well as cotunneling spectroscopy allow to directly probe the proximity-induced energy gap in a ballistic two-dimensional electron gas coupled to superconductors.
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements conducted on epitaxially grown bilayers of half-metallic ferromagnetic La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) on superconducting (SC) (100)YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) reveal long-range penetration of superconducting order into the LCMO. This anomalous proximity effect manifests itself in the tunneling spectra measured on the LCMO layer as gaps and zero bias conductance peaks. Remarkably, these proximity-induced spectral features were observed for bilayers with LCMO thickness of up to 30 nm, an order of magnitude larger than the expected ferromagnetic coherence length in …
