Alexandrov's soap bubble theorem asserts that spheres are the only connected closed embedded hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space with constant mean curvature. The theorem can be extended to space forms and it holds for more general functions of the principal curvatures.
In this short review, we discuss quantitative stability results regarding Alexandrov's theorem which have been obtained by the author in recent years. In particular, we consider hypersurfaces having mean curvature close to a constant and we quantitatively describe the proximity to a single sphere or to a collection of tangent spheres in terms of the oscillation of the mean curvature. Moreover, we also consider the problem in a non local setting, and we show that the non local effect gives a stronger rigidity to the problem and prevents the appearance of bubbling.
We consider convex hypersurfaces for which the ratio of principal curvatures at each point is bounded by a function of the maximum principal curvature with limit 1 at infinity. We prove that the ratio of circumradius to inradius is bounded by a function of the circumradius with limit 1 at zero. We apply this result to the motion of hypersurfaces by arbitrary speeds which are smooth homogeneous functions of the principal curvatures of degree greater than one. For smooth, strictly convex initial hypersurfaces with ratio of principal curvatures sufficiently close to one at each point, we prove th…
We consider the evolution of starshaped hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space by general curvature functions. Under appropriate conditions on the curvature function, we prove the global existence and convergence of the flow to a hypersurface of prescribed curvature.
In this paper, we establish the curvature estimates for $p$-convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ of prescribed curvature with $p\geq \frac{n}{2}$. The existence of a star-shaped hypersurface of prescribed curvature is obtained. We also prove a type of interior $C^2$ estimates for solutions to the Dirichlet problem of the corresponding equation.
In this paper, we study the Dirichlet problem for $p$-convex hypersurfaces with prescribed curvature. We prove that there exists a graphic hypersurface satisfying the prescribed curvature equation with homogeneous boundary condition. An interior curvature estimate is also obtained.
In this paper, we prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed lightlike directions in Minkowski space. This is equivalent to prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed Gauss map image. We also show that there doesn't exist any entire, convex, strictly spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces. Moreover, we generalize the result in \cite{RWX} and construct strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurface with bounde…
We study asymptotic behavior of nonparametric hypersurfaces moving by $α$ powers of Gauss curvature $α> 1/n$. Our work generalizes the results of V. Oliker [Oli91] for $α= 1$.
We investigate the mean curvature flows in a class of warped product manifolds with closed hypersurfaces fibering over $\mathbb{R}$. In particular, we prove that under natural conditions on the warping function and Ricci curvature bound for the ambient space, there exists a large class of closed initial hypersurfaces, as geodesic graphs over the totally geodesic hypersurface $Σ$, such that the mean curvature flow starting from $S_0$ exists for all time and converges to $Σ$.
We continue the study, initiated by the first two authors in \cite{IW19}, of Type-II curvature blow-up in mean curvature flow of complete noncompact embedded hypersurfaces. In particular, we construct mean curvature flow solutions, in the rotationally symmetric class, with the following precise asymptotics near the "vanishing" time $T$: (1) The highest curvature concentrates at the tip of the hypersurface (an umbilical point) and blows up at the rate $(T-t)^{-1}$. (2) In a neighbourhood of the tip, the solution converges to a translating soliton known as the bowl soliton. (3) Near spatial infi…
Weakly stable constant mean curvature (CMC) hypersurfaces are stable critical points of the area functional with respect to volume preserving deformations. We establish a pointwise curvature estimate (in the non-singular dimensions) and a sheeting theorem (in all dimensions) for weakly stable CMC hypersurfaces, giving an effective version of the compactness theorem for weakly stable CMC hypersurfaces established in the recent work of the first and third-named authors. Our results generalize the curvature estimate and the sheeting theorem proven respectively by Schoen--Simon--Yau and Schoen--Si…
We show that closed hypersurfaces in Euclidean space with nonnegative scalar curvature are weakly mean convex. In contrast, the statement is no longer true if the scalar curvature is replaced by the k-th mean curvature, for k greater than 2, as we construct the counter-examples for all k greater than 2. Our proof relies on a new geometric inequality which relates the scalar curvature and mean curvature of a hypersurface to the mean curvature of the level sets of a height function. By extending the argument, we show that complete non-compact hypersurfaces of finitely many regular ends with nonn…
In 1998 Smoczyk [Smo98] showed that, among others, the blowup limits at singularities are convex for the mean curvature flow starting from a closed star-shaped surface in $\mathbf{R}^3$. We prove in this paper that this is true for the mean curvature flow of star-shaped hypersurfaces in $\mathbf{R}^{n+1}$ in arbitrary dimension $n\geq 2$. In fact, this holds for a much more general class of initial hypersurfaces. In particular, this implies that the mean curvature flow of star-shaped hypersurfaces is generic in the sense of Colding-Minicozzi [CM12].
In [7], Guan, Ren and Wang obtained a $C^2$ a priori estimate for admissible 2-convex hypersurfaces satisfying the Weingarten curvature equation $σ_2(κ(X))=f(X, ν(X)).$ In this note, we give a simpler proof of this result, and extend it to space forms.
In the previous paper, it has been proved that the generalized rotational hypersurfaces of O(n-1)-type and O (l+1) x O(m+1)-type, for which the mean curvature is any prescribed continuous function. This paper is a sequel, and a similar existence result is shown for any type.
We study minimal hypersurfaces in manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature, Euclidean volume growth and quadratic curvature decay at infinity. By comparison with capped spherical cones, we identify a precise borderline for the Ricci curvature decay. Above this value, no complete area-minimizing hypersurfaces exist. Below this value, in contrast, we construct examples.
We obtain a comparison formula for integrals of mean curvatures of Riemannian hypersurfaces, via Reilly's identities. As applications we derive several geometric inequalities for a convex hypersurface $Γ$ in a Cartan-Hadamard manifold $M$. In particular we show that the first mean curvature integral of a convex hypersurface $γ$ nested inside $Γ$ cannot exceed that of $Γ$, which leads to a sharp lower bound in dimension $3$ for the total first mean curvature of $Γ$ in terms of the volume it bounds in $M$. This monotonicity property is extended to all mean curvature integrals when $γ$ is paralle…
We study hypersurfaces with fractional mean curvature in N-dimensional Euclidean space. These hypersurfaces are critical points of the fractional perimeter under a volume constraint. We use local inversion arguments to prove existence of smooth branches of multiply-periodic hypersurfaces bifurcating from suitable parallel hyperplanes.
We study a variant of the mean curvature flow for closed, convex hypersurfaces where the normal velocity is a nonhomogeneous function of the principal curvatures. We show that if the initial hypersurface satisfies a certain pinching condition, then this is preserved and the flow converges to a sphere under rescaling.
We study the mean curvature flow in 3-dimensional null hypersurfaces. In a spacetime a hypersurface is called null, if its induced metric is degenerate. The speed of the mean curvature flow of spacelike surfaces in a null hypersurface is the projection of the codimension-two mean curvature vector onto the null hypersurface. We impose fairly mild conditions on the null hypersurface. Then for an outer un-trapped initial surface, a condition which resembles the mean-convexity of a surface in Euclidean space, we prove that the mean curvature flow exists for all times and converges smoothly to a ma…
We show that for a very general and natural class of curvature functions, the problem of finding a complete strictly convex hypersurface satisfying f(κ) = σ over (0,1) with a prescribed asymptotic boundary Γ at infinity has at least one solution which is a "vertical graph" over the interior (or the exterior) of Γ. There is uniqueness for a certain subclass of these curvature functions and as σ varies between 0 and 1, these hypersurfaces foliate the two components of the complement of the hyperbolic convex hull of Γ.
