We demonstrate that the QCD topological susceptibility nonperturbatively gets a significant contribution signaled by flavor-nonuniversal quark condensates at around the pseudo-critical temperature of the chiral crossover. It implies a remarkable flavor breaking in the axial anomaly as well as the QCD theta vacuum in high temperature QCD, which are almost flavor universal in the vacuum. A nontrivial flavor breaking is triggered by nonperturbative thermal loop corrections at around the chiral crossover, which is different from the trivial flavor violation just scaled by the quark mass ratio, observed at asymptotically high temperatures. This critical flavor violation cannot be dictated by the chiral perturbation theory with that lattice QCD usually compares, or the dilute instanton gas approximation based on that its astrophysical implications have conventionally been made. This would give an impact on the thermal history and the cosmological evolution of QCD axion including the estimate of the relic abundance as a dark matter candidate.
We present numerical evidence that, in the planar limit, four dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills theory undergoes a phase transition on a finite symmetrical four-torus when the length of the sides $l$ decreases to a critical value $l_c$. For $l>l_c$ continuum reduction holds so that at leading order in $N$, there are no finite size effects in Wilson and Polyakov loops. This produces the exciting possibility of solving numerically for the meson sector of planar QCD at a cost substantially smaller than that of quenched SU(3).
We discuss the violation of quark-flavor symmetry at high temperatures, induced from nonperturbative thermal loop corrections and axial anomaly, based on a three-flavor linear-sigma model including an axial-anomaly induced-flavor breaking term. We employ a nonperturbative analysis following the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism, and show that the model undergoes a chiral crossover with a pseudo-critical temperature, consistently with lattice observations. We find following features regarding the flavor breaking eminent around and above the pseudo-critical temperature: i) up-and down-quark co…
We discuss nonperturbative contributions to the 3-dimensional one-loop effective potential of the electroweak theory at high temperatures in the framework of the stochastic vacuum model. It assumes a gauge-field background with Gaussian correlations which leads to confinement. The instability of <F^2>=0 in Yang-Mills theory appears for small Higgs expectation value <ϕ^2> in an IR regularized form. The gauge boson propagator obtains a positive momentum-dependent ``diamagnetic'' effective (mass)^2 due to confinement effects and a negative one due to ``paramagnetic'' spin-spin interactions which …
We derive a model-independent integral formula for chiral susceptibility and attempt to present a continuum model study of it within the framework of Dyson-Schwinger Equations. An appropriate regularization is implemented to remove the temperature-independent quadratic divergence inherent in this quantity. While it demonstrates a second-order phase transition characteristic in the chiral limit, the result obtained supports a crossover at physical current quark masses, which is in good agreement with recent lattice studies.
Thermodynamics of the three-flavor quark-meson model with axial anomaly is studied in the presence of external magnetic fields. The nonperturbative functional renormalization group is employed in order to incorporate quantum and thermal fluctuations beyond the mean-field approximation. We calculate the magnetic susceptibility with proper renormalization and find that the system is diamagnetic in the hadron phase and paramagnetic in the hot plasma phase. The obtained values of the magnetic susceptibility are in reasonable agreement with the data from first-principle lattice QCD. Comparison with…
The chiral susceptibility is given by the scalar vacuum polarisation at zero total momentum. This follows directly from the expression for the vacuum quark condensate so long as a nonperturbative symmetry preserving truncation scheme is employed. For QCD in-vacuum the susceptibility can rigorously be defined via a Pauli-Villars regularisation procedure. Owing to the scalar Ward identity, irrespective of the form or Ansatz for the kernel of the gap equation, the consistent scalar vertex at zero total momentum can automatically be obtained and hence the consistent susceptibility. This enables ca…
We study the topological susceptibility in 2+1 flavor QCD above the chiral crossover transition temperature using Highly Improved Staggered Quark action and several lattice spacings, corresponding to temporal extent of the lattice, $N_τ=6,8,10$ and $12$. We observe very distinct temperature dependences of the topological susceptibility in the ranges above and below $250$ MeV. While for temperatures above $250$ MeV, the dependence is found to be consistent with dilute instanton gas approximation, at lower temperatures the fall-off of topological susceptibility is milder. We discuss the conseque…
Anomalous quark triangles with one axial and two vector currents are studied in special kinematics when one of the vector currents carries a soft momentum. According to the Adler-Bardeen theorem the anomalous longitudinal part of the triangle is not renormalized in the chiral limit. We derive a new nonrenormalization theorem for the transversal part of the triangle. This nonrenormalization, in difference with the longitudinal part, holds on only perturbatively. At the nonperturbative level we use the operator product expansion and the pion dominance in the longitudinal part to determine the ma…
Thermal fluctuations and correlations between the light and heavy-light mesons are explored within a chiral effective theory implementing heavy quark symmetry. We show, that various heavy-light flavor correlations indicate a remnant of the chiral criticality in a narrow range of temperature where the chiral susceptibility exhibits a peak structure. The onset of the chiral crossover, in the heavy-light flavor correlations, is therefore independent from the light flavors. This indicates that the fluctuations carried by strange charmed mesons can also be used to identify the chiral crossover, whi…
We show that the nonlocal two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model predicts the enhancement of both chiral and axial symmetry breaking as the chiral imbalance of hot QCD matter, regulated by a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$, increases. The two crossovers are reasonably close to each other in the range of $μ_5$ examined here and the pseudocritical temperatures rise with $μ_5$. The curvatures of the chiral and axial crossovers for the chiral quark chemical potential approximately coincide and give $κ_5 \simeq - 0.011$. We point out that the presence of $μ_5$ in thermodynamic equilibrium is inconsis…
For an electron gas with delta-function attraction we investigate the crossover from weak- to strong-coupling supercoductivity in two and three dimensions. We derive analytic expressions for the stiffness of phase fluctuations and set up effective XY-models which serve to determine nonperturbatively the temperature of phase decoherence where superconductivity breaks down. We find the transition temperature T_c as a monotonous function of the coupling strength and carrier density both in two and three dimensions, and give analytic formulas for the merging of the temperature of phase decoherence…
We compute the topological susceptibility chi_t in SU(3) lattice gauge theory using fermionic methods based on the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. Near the phase transition we find a smooth crossover behavior for chi_t with values decreasing from (191(5) MeV)^4 to (100(5) MeV)^4 as we increase the temperature from 0.88 T_c to 1.31 T_c, showing that topological excitations exist far above T_c. Our study is the first large scale analysis of the topological susceptibility at high temperature based on the index theorem and the results agree well with field theoretical methods.
In this paper, the relations of four different susceptibilities (i.e., the chiral susceptibility, the fermion number susceptibility, the thermal susceptibility and the staggered spin susceptibility) are investigated both in and beyond the chiral limit. To this end, we numerically solve the finite temperature version of the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations for fermion and boson propagator. It is found that, in the chiral limit, the four susceptibilities give the same critical temperature and signal a typical second order phase transition. But the situation changes beyond the chiral limit: th…
Lattice data for the QCD equation of state and the magnetic susceptibility computed near the crossover transition at zero magnetic field are used to determine the input parameters of a five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model. Once the model parameters are fixed at zero magnetic field, one can use this holographic construction to study the effects of a magnetic field on the equilibrium and transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma. In this paper we use this model to study the dependence of the crossover temperature with an external magnetic field. Our results for the pr…
Using the trace anomaly and low energy relations, as well as the Witten-Veneziano formula for the mass of the $η'$ meson, we have developed a formalism which makes it possible to express the gluon condensate, the topological susceptibility and the mass of the $η'$ meson as a functions of the truly nonperturbative vacuum energy density which is one of the most important characteristics of the QCD true ground state. It was directly applied to the numerical evaluation of the chiral QCD vacuum topological structure within its quantum zero momentum modes enhancement model. A rather good agreement w…
By adopting a $T$-matrix based method within $G_0G$ approximation for the pair susceptibility, we studied the effects of pairing fluctuation on the BCS-BEC crossover in symmetric nuclear matter. The pairing fluctuation induces a pseudogap in the excitation spectrum of nucleon in both superfluid and normal phases. The critical temperature of superfluid transition was calculated. It differs from the BCS result remarkably when density is low. We also computed the specific heat which shows a nearly ideal BEC type temperature dependence at low density but a BCS type behavior at high density. This q…
The quark number susceptibility near the QCD critical end-point (CEP), the tricritical point (TCP) and the O(4) critical line at finite temperature and quark chemical potential is investigated. Based on the universality argument and numerical model calculations we propose a possibility that the hidden tricritical point strongly affects the critical phenomena around the critical end-point. We made a semi-quantitative study of the quark number susceptibility near CEP/TCP for several quark masses on the basis of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) potential for QCD in the improved-ladder approxim…
The spectrum of the Dirac operator near zero virtuality obtained in lattice gauge simulations is known to be universally described by chiral random matrix theory. We address the question of the maximum energy for which this universality persists. For this purpose, we analyze large ensembles of complete spectra of the Euclidean Dirac operator for staggered fermions. We calculate the disconnected scalar susceptibility and the microscopic number variance for the chiral symplectic ensemble of random matrices and compare the results with lattice Dirac spectra for quenched SU(2). The crossover to a …
The nonperturbative quark gap equation under the rainbow truncation and with two versions of a phenomenological one-gluon exchange interaction is studied in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field, with emphasis on the small field limit. The chiral quark condensate, magnetic moment and susceptibility are calculated and compared to recent lattice data.
We study the dependence of the static quark free energy on the baryon chemical potential for $N_f = 2+1$ QCD with physical quark masses, in a range of temperature spanning from 120~MeV up to 1~GeV and adopting a stout staggered discretization with two different values of the Euclidean temporal extension, $N_t = 6$ and $N_t = 8$. In order to deal with the sign problem, we exploit both Taylor expansion and analytic continuation, obtaining consistent results. We show that the dependence of the free energy on $μ_B$ is sensitive to the location of the chiral crossover, in particular the $μ_B$-susce…
Using the CUJET3=DGLV+VISHNU jet-medium interaction framework, we show that dijet azimuthal acoplanarity in high energy $A+A$ collisions is sensitive to possible non-perturbative enhancement of the jet transport coefficient, $\hat{q}(T,E)$, in the QCD crossover temperature $T\sim 150-300$ MeV range. With jet-medium couplings constrained by global RHIC\& LHC $χ^2$ fits to nuclear modification data on $R_{AA}$, we compare predictions of the medium induced dijet transverse momentum squared, $Q_s^2\sim \langle \hat{q} L \rangle \sim Δϕ^2 E^2$, in two models of the temperature, $T$, and jet energy …
We show that the chiral-symmetry-broken phase of massless QED in the presence of a magnetic field exhibits strong paraelectricity. A large anisotropic electric susceptibility develops in the infrared region, where most of the fermions are confined to their lowest Landau level, and dynamical mass and anomalous magnetic moment are generated via the magnetic catalysis mechanism. The nonperturbative nature of this effect is reflected in the dependence of the electric susceptibility on the fine-structure constant. The strong paraelectricity is linked to the electric dipole moments of the particle/a…
We compute the topological charge and its susceptibility in finite temperature (2+1)-flavor QCD on the lattice applying a gradient flow method. With the Iwasaki gauge action and nonperturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks, we perform simulations on a fine lattice with~$a\simeq0.07\,\mathrm{fm}$ at a heavy $u$, $d$ quark mass with $m_π/m_ρ\simeq0.63$ but approximately physical $s$ quark mass with $m_{η_{ss}}/m_ϕ\simeq0.74$. In a temperature range from~$T\simeq174\,\mathrm{MeV}$ ($N_t=16$) to $697\,\mathrm{MeV}$ ($N_t=4$), we study two topics on the topological susceptibility. One is a compa…
The phase structure of the Polyakov loop-extended chiral quark-meson model is explored in a nonperturbative approach, beyond a mean-field approximation, in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that by including meson fluctuations one cannot resolve the qualitative discrepancy on the dependence of the crossover transition temperature in a non-zero magnetic field between effective model predictions and recent lattice results (arXiv:1111.4956).We compute the curvature of the crossover line in the T - μ_B plane at a non-zero magnetic field and show that the curvature increases with increasing…

Using effective potential approach for composite operators we have formulated quantum model of the QCD vacuum. It is based on the existence and importance of the nonperturbative $q^{-4}$, topologically nontrivial excitations of the gluon field configurations there. As a result of this the QCD vacuum is found stable and it has a stationary state. The value of the scale reponsible for the nonperturbative dynamics is taken from the bounds for the pion decay constant in the chiral limit. We have obtained good numerical agreement with the phenomenological values of the topological susceptibility, t…
