We have assembled the historical light curves of the BL Lac Object 3FGL J0449.4-4350 at optical and gamma-ray bands, the time spanning about 10 years, analyzed the periodic variability of the light curves by using four different methods (Lomb-Scargle periodogram, REDFIT38, Jurkevich and DACF). We detected a marginally possible quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of ~450 days. Assuming it originates from the helical motion jet in a supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) system undergoing major merger, we estimate the primary black hole mass M~7.7*10^{9} M_sun. To explore the origin of the gamma-ray, we investigated the optical-gamma-ray correlations using discrete correlation function (DCF) method, and found that the correlation between the two bands is very significant. This strong correlation tends to imply lepton self-synchro-Compton (LSSC) model to produce the gamma-ray.
We monitored BL Lacertae frequently during 2014 - 2016 when it was generally in a high state. We searched for intra-day variability for 43 nights using quasi-simultaneous measurements in the B, V, R, and I bands (totaling 143 light curves); the typical sampling interval was about eight minutes. On hour-like timescales, BL Lac exhibited significant variations during 13 nights in various optical bands. Significant spectral variations are seen during most of these nights such that the optical spectrum becomes bluer when brighter. The amplitude of variability is usually greater for longer observat…
BL Lacertae, the prototype of the BL Lacertae (BL Lac) category of blazars, underwent a giant $γ-$ray flare in April 2021. The Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (hereafter Fermi-LAT) observed a peak $γ-$ray (0.1$-$500 GeV) flux of $\sim$2 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ within a single orbit on 2021 April 27, which is historically the brightest $γ-$ray flux ever detected from the source. Here, we report, for the first time, the detection of significant minute-timescale GeV $γ-$ray flux variability in the BL Lac subclass of blazars by the Fermi…
We present the results of extensive multi-band intra-night optical monitoring of BL Lacertae during 2010--2012. BL Lacertae was very active in this period and showed intense variability in almost all wavelengths. We extensively observed it for a total for 38 nights; on 26 of them observations were done quasi-simultaneously in B, V, R and I bands (totaling 113 light curves), with an average sampling interval of around 8 minutes. BL Lacertae showed significant variations on hour-like timescales in a total of 19 nights in different optical bands. We did not find any evidence for periodicities or …
We observed the prototype blazar, BL Lacertae, extensively in optical and radio bands during an active phase in the period 2010--2013 when the source showed several prominent outbursts. We searched for possible correlations and time lags between the optical and radio band flux variations using multifrequency data to learn about the mechanisms producing variability. During an active phase of BL Lacertae, we searched for possible correlations and time lags between multifrequency light curves of several optical and radio bands. We tried to estimate any possible variability timescales and inter-ba…
X-ray data from the blazar BL Lac are used to investigate the nature of its variability, and more precisely the flux dependency of the variability and the distribution of fluxes. The variations in the flux are found to have a lognormal distribution and the average amplitude of variability is proportional to the flux level. BL Lac is the first blazar in which lognormal X-ray variability is clearly detected. Lognormal variability in X-ray light curves, probably related to accretion disk activity, has been discovered in various compact systems, such as Seyfert galaxies and X-ray binaries. The lig…
Variability is one of the extreme observational properties of BL Lacertae objects. AO 0235+164 is a well studied BL Lac through the whole electro-magnetic wavebands. In the present work, we show its optical R band photometric observations carried out during the period of Nov, 2006 to Dec. 2012 using the Ap6E CCD camera attached to the primary focus of the $\rm 70-cm$ meniscus telescope at Abastumani Observatory, Georgia. It shows a large variation of $ΔR$ = 4.88 mag (14.19 - 19.07 mag) and a short time scale of $ΔT_v$ = 73.5 min during our monitoring period. During the period of Dec. 2006 to N…
BL Lacertae (BL Lac) is categorized as TeV blazar and considered as a possible source of astrophysical neutrinos. In 2020, the brightest X-ray flare ever detected from it. A detailed study can answer many puzzling questions related to multiband emissions and fast-flux variability often seen in this kind of source. We have performed the temporal and spectral analysis of the brightest flare. The variability is characterized by the fractional variability amplitude and the variability time. We found that the source has crossed all its previous limits of flux and reached the maximum ever seen from …
With the assumption that the optical variability timescale is dominated by the cooling time of the synchrotron process for BL Lac objects, we estimate time dependent magnetic field strength of the emission region for two BL Lac objects. The average magnetic field strengths are consistent with those estimated from core shift measurement and spectral energy distribution modelling. Variation of magnetic field strength in dissipation region is discovered. Variability of flux and magnetic field strength show no clear correlation, which indicates the variation of magnetic field is not the dominant r…
We monitored BL Lacertae in the B, V, R and I bands for 14 nights during the period of 2016-2018. The source showed significant intraday variability on 12 nights. We performed colour-magnitude analysis and found that the source exhibited bluer-when-brighter chromatism. This bluer-when-brighter behavior is at least partly caused by the larger variation amplitude at shorter wavelength. The variations at different wavelengths are well correlated and show no inter-band time lag.
This paper reports on the statistical behaviour of the optical IntraDay Variability of BL Lac S5 0716+714. Available IntraDay Variability data in the optical is tested to see whether or not the magnitude is log-normally distributed. It was consistently found that this is not the case. This is in agreement with a previous discussion for data for the same object but in a different observational period. Simultaneously, the spectral slope of the light curves is calculated. The implications of these findings for models which discuss both the location and the source of IntraDay Variability are prese…
In this work, we explore the long-term variability properties of the blazar PKS 0219-164 in the radio and the $γ$-ray regime, utilizing the OVRO 15 GHz and the \fermi/LAT observations from the period 2008--2017. We found that $γ$-ray emission is more variable than the radio emission implying that $γ$ ray emission possibly originated in more compact regions while the radio emission represented continuum emission from the large scale jets. Also, in $γ$-ray the source exhibited spectral variability characterized by the \emph{ softer-when-brighter} trend, a less frequently observed feature in the …
We compare the variability properties of very high energy gamma-ray emitting BL Lac objects in the optical and radio bands. We use the variability information to distinguish multiple emission components in the jet, to be used as a guidance for spectral energy distribution modelling. Our sample includes 32 objects in the Northern sky that have data for at least 2 years in both bands. We use optical R-band data from the Tuorla blazar monitoring program and 15 GHz radio data from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory blazer monitoring program. We estimate the variability amplitudes using the intrins…
We used the data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope to characterise the γ-ray flux variability of blazars on month-like time scales. Our sample consists of 1120 blazars of which 481 are flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 639 are BL Lac objects (BL Lacs). We generated monthly binned light curves of our sample for a period of approximately nine years from 2008 August to 2017 December and quantified variability by using excess variance (F_var). On month-like time scales, 371/481 FSRQs are variable ( 80%), while only about 50% (304/639) of BL Lacs are variable. This suggests that FSRQs …
We present long term optical and near infrared flux variability analysis of 37 blazars detected in the $γ$-ray band by the {\it Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope}. Among them, 30 are flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 7 are BL Lac objects (BL Lacs). The photometric data in the optical (BVR) and infrared (JK) bands were from the Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System acquired between 2008$-$2018. From cross-correlation analysis of the light curves at different wavelengths, we did not find significant time delays between variations at different wavelengths, except for three sou…
Analysis of rapid variability at 4.85 GHz for the BL BLac object 0925+504 is presented and discussed. The structure functions (SF) are investigated with both refractive and weak interstellar scintillation (RISS/WISS) models analytically. Parameters obtained with these models are quantitatively compared, suggesting that the emission region of IDV is remarkably compact and the responsible interstellar scintillation medium (ISM) lies very close to the observer. Furthermore possible evidence of annual modulation of the variability timescales is detected in this source. Our findings indicate that t…
We monitored BL Lacertae simultaneously in the optical B, V, R and I bands for 13 nights during the period 2012-2016. The variations were well correlated in all bands and the source showed significant intraday variability (IDV). We also studied its optical flux and colour behaviour, and searched for inter-band time lags. A strong bluer-when-brighter chromatism was found on the intra-night time-scale. The spectral changes are not sensitive to the host galaxy contribution. Cross-correlation analysis revealed possible time delay of about 10 min between variations in the V and R bands. We interpre…
The possibility that BL Lac S5 0716+714 exhibits a linear root mean square (rms)-flux relation in its IntraDay Variability (IDV) is analysed. The results may be used as an argument in the existing debate regarding the source of optical IDV in Active Galactic Nuclei. 63 time series in different optical bands were used. A linear rms-flux relation at a confidence level higher than 65% was recovered for less than 8% of the cases. We were able to check if the magnitude is log-normally distributed for eight timeseries and found, with a confidence > 95%, that this is not the case.
Blazars optical emission is generally dominated by relativistic jets, although the host galaxy, accretion disk and broad line region (BLR) may also contribute significantly. Disentangling their contributions has been challenging for years due to the dominance of the jet. To quantify the contributions to the spectral variability, we use the statistical technique for dimensionality reduction Non-Negative Matrix Factorization on a spectroscopic data set of 26 $γ$-ray blazars. This technique allows to model large numbers of spectra in terms of a reduced number of components. We use a priori knowled…
We present the results of our power spectral analysis for the BL Lac object PKS 0735+178 utilizing the Fermi-LAT survey at high-energy $γ$-rays, several ground-based optical telescopes, and single-dish radio telescopes operating at GHz frequencies. The novelty of our approach is that, by combining long-term and densely sampled intra-night light curves in the optical regime, we were able to construct for the first time the optical power spectrum of the blazar for a time domain extending from 23 years down to minutes. Our analysis reveals that: (i) the optical variability is consistent with a pu…
BL Lacertae had undergone a series of historical high flux activity over a year, from August 2020 in the optical to VHE $γ$-rays. In this paper, we report on optical flux and spectral variability of the first historical maxima outburst event during October-November in g, r and i bands with the 1.26m telescope at Xinglong observatory, China. We detected significant intranight variations with amplitude rising up to $\sim 30$%, when the fastest variability timescale is found to be a few tens of minutes, giving an emitting region size of the order $10^{-3}$ pc, which corresponds to $\sim 100$ Schw…
The long-term optical and infrared color variability of blazars has been investigated with the SMARTS monitoring data. The sample in this study consists of 49 flat spectrum radio quasars and 22 BL Lac objects. The fractional variability amplitudes of each source have been calculated in both optical R band and infrared J band. Overall, the variability amplitudes of FSRQs are larger than those of BL Lac objects. The results also suggest that the variability amplitude of most FSRQs is larger at lower energy band (J band) than at higher one (R band), while the variability amplitude of BL Lacs are …
We present the results obtained from our campaign to characterize the intra-night-optical variability properties of blazars detected by the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope. This involves R-band monitoring observations of a sample of 18 blazars, that includes five flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and thirteen BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) covering the redshift range z = 0.085$-$1.184. Our observations, carried out using the 1.3 m J.C. Bhattacharya Telescope cover a total of 40 nights ($\sim$200 hrs) between the period 2016 December and 2020 March. We characterized variability using the power enh…
We monitored BL Lacertae for 13 nights in optical B, V, R, and I bands during October and November 2014 including quasi-simultaneous observations in V and R bands using two optical telescopes in India. We have studied multi-band optical flux variations, colour variation and spectral changes in this blazar. Source was found to be active during the whole monitoring period and showed significant intraday variability on 3 nights in V and R filters while displayed hints of variability on 6 other dates in R passband and on 2 nights in V filter. From the colour-magnitude analysis of the source we fou…
Blazars can be divided into two subtypes, flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lac objects, which have been distinguished phenomenologically by the strength of their optical emission lines, while their physical nature and relationship are still not fully understood. In this paper, we focus on the differences in their variability. We characterize the blazar variability using the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process, and investigate the features that are discriminative for the two subtypes. We used optical photometric and polarimetric data obtained with the 1.5-m Kanata telescope for 2008-2014.…
We compared the time (or time limit) of onset for optical afterglow emission to the gamma-ray variability V in 76 GRBs with redshifts. In the subset (25 cases) with the rise evident in the data, we fit the shape of the onset peak as well and compared the rising and decaying indices to V. We did not find any evidence for any patterns between these properties and there is no statistical support for any correlations. This indicates a lack of connection between irregularities of the prompt gamma-ray emission and the establishment of the afterglow phase. In the ordinary prompt internal shocks inter…
We present a high-frequency very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) kinematical study of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 over the time period of September 2008 to October 2010. The aim of the study is to investigate the relation of the jet kinematics to the observed broadband flux variability. We find significant non-radial motions in the jet outflow of the source. In the radial direction, the highest measured apparent speed is \sim37 c, which is exceptionally high, especially for a BL Lac object. Patterns in the jet flow reveal a roughly stationary feature \sim0.15 mas downstream of the core. …
The high-frequency peaked BL Lac object 1ES 0229+200 (z = 0.14) was first detected in very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) $γ$-rays by the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) collaboration in 2006. No flux variability was reported in the initial study and its spectral characteristics have been used to derive constraints on the extragalactic background light (EBL) and on the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF). 1ES 0229+200 has been observed with H.E.S.S. for $\sim$130 hours from 2004 to 2013: the full dataset analysed with a more sensitive method will be presented here. The results indic…
We present results of multi-wavelength (MWL) observations of the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae (HBL) object 1ES 0806+524 (z=0.138). Triggered by a high optical state, very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) observations were carried out with the MAGIC stereoscopic system from January to March 2011. During the observations a relatively short VHE gamma-ray flare was detected that lasted no longer than one night. To complement the VHE observations, simultaneous MWL data were collected in high energy gamma-rays using the \textit{Fermi Large Area Telescope (HE, 300 MeV - 100 GeV), in the X-ray and …
Aims: Intranight variation (or microvariation) is a common phenomenon of radio-loud BL Lac objects. However, it is not clear whether the recently found radio-quiet BL Lac objects have the same properties. The occurrence rate of intranight variation is helpful in distinguishing the mechanism of the continuum of radio-quiet BL Lac objects. Methods: We conducted a photometric monitoring of 8 radio-quiet BL Lac objects by the Xinglong 2.16m and Lijiang 2.4m telescopes. The differential light curves are calculated between each target and two comparison stars. To quantify the variation, the signific…
The spectral energy distribution and variability of several blazars (Mkn 501, 1 ES 2344+51.4, PKS 2155-30.4, 1 ES 1218+30.4, 3C 454.3) along the blazar sequence is investigated using a selfconsistent and timedependent lepto-hadronic hybrid emission model. The BL Lac objects in the list are successfully modelled with purely leptonic radiation processes (essentially Synchrotron Self-Compton emission), while the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar requires highly relativistic hadrons to be present within the jet. Variability is exploited as well with our model to distinguish between Self-Compton and hadro…
We present results of a variability study in the optical band of 44 newly identified blazar candidates behind the Magellanic Clouds. Our sample contains 27 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 17 BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs). However, only nine of them are considered as secure blazar candidates, while the classification of the remaining 35 objects is still uncertain. All studied blazar candidates possess infrequently sampled optical light curves (LCs) in I filter provided by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment group. The LCs were analysed with the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, the Hur…
We report the results of optical monitoring for a sample of 11 blazars including 10 BL Lacs and 1 Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ). We have measured the multiband optical flux and colour variations in these blazars on intra-day and short-term timescales of months and have limited data for 2 more blazars. These photometric observations were made during 2009 to 2011, using six optical telescopes, four in Bulgaria, one in Greece and one in India. On short-term timescales we found significant flux variations in 9 of the sources and colour variations in 3 of them. Intra-day variability was detecte…
We report the first results of a systematic investigation to characterize blazar variability power spectral densities (PSDs) at optical frequencies using densely sampled (5--15 minutes integration time), high photometric accuracy ($\lesssim$0.2--0.5\%) R-band intranight light curves, covering timescales ranging from several hours to $\sim$15\,minutes. Our sample consists of 14 optically bright blazars, including nine BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and five flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) which have shown statistically significant variability during 29 monitoring sessions. We model the intra…
In an optical monitoring program to characterize the variability properties of blazar, we observed 10 sources from the Roma-BZCAT catalogue for 26 nights in V and R bands during October 2014 to June 2015 with two telescopes located in India. The sample includes mainly newly discovered BL Lacs where the redshift of some sources are not known yet. We present the results of flux and color variations of the sample on intraday and short time scales obtained by using the power-enhanced F-test and the nested-ANOVA tests, along with their spectral behavior. We find significant intraday variability in …
We report results from a 1 week multi-wavelength campaign to monitor the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 (on December 9-16, 2009). In the radio bands the source shows rapid (~ (0.5-1.5) day) intra-day variability with peak amplitudes of up to ~ 10 %. The variability at 2.8 cm leads by about 1 day the variability at 6 cm and 11 cm. This time lag and more rapid variations suggests an intrinsic contribution to the source's intraday variability at 2.8 cm, while at 6 cm and 11 cm interstellar scintillation (ISS) seems to predominate. Large and quasi-sinusoidal variations of ~ 0.8 mag were detected in the…
We present the first Kepler monitoring of a strongly variable BL Lac, W2R1926+42. The light curve covers 181 days with ~0.2% errors, 30 minute sampling and >90% duty cycle, showing numerous delta I/I > 25% flares over timescales as short as a day. The flux distribution is highly skewed and non-Gaussian. The variability shows a strong rms-flux correlation with the clearest evidence to date for non-linearity in this relation. We introduce a method to measure periodograms from the discrete autocorrelation function, an approach that may be well-suited to a wide range of Kepler data. The periodogra…
Well-sampled optical and radio light curves of BL Lacertae in B, V, R, I bands and 4.8, 8.0, 14.5 GHz from 1968 to 2014 were presented in this paper. A possible $1.26 \pm 0.05$ yr period in optical bands and a $7.50 \pm 0.15$ yr period in radio bands were detected based on discrete correlation function, structure function as well as Jurkevich method. Correlations among different bands were also analyzed and no reliable time delay was found between optical bands. Very weak correlations were detected between V band and radio bands. However, in radio bands the variation at low frequency lagged th…
We present the results of photometric (V band) and polarimetric observations of the blazar BL Lac during 2008--2010 using TRISPEC attached to the KANATA 1.5-m telescope in Japan. The data reveal a great deal of variability ranging from days to months with detection of strong variations in fractional polarization. The V band flux strongly anti-correlates with the degree of polarization during the first of two observing seasons but not during the second. The direction of the electric vector, however, remained roughly constant during all our observations. These results are consistent with a model…
Blazars are astrophysical sources whose emission is dominated by non-thermal processes, typically interpreted as synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. Although the general picture is rather robust and consistent with observations, many aspects are still unexplored. Polarimetric monitoring can offer a wealth of information about the physical processes in blazars. Models with largely different physical ingredients can often provide almost indistinguishable predictions for the total flux, but usually are characterized by markedly different polarization properties. We explore, with a pilot stu…
We present the results of photometric observations of three TeV blazars, 3C 66A, S5 0954+658 and BL Lacertae, during the period 2013--2017. Our extensive observations were performed in a total of 360 nights which produced $\sim$6820 image frames in BVRI bands. We study flux and spectral variability of these blazars on these lengthy timescales. We also examine the optical Spectral Energy Distributions of these blazars, which are crucial in understanding the emission mechanism of long-term variability in blazars. All three TeV blazars exhibited strong flux variability during our observations. Th…
We investigate the temporal and colour variability of 897 blazars, comprising 455 BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and 442 Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs), selected from the Roma-BZCAT catalogue, using the multi-band light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF DR6) survey. Assessing the colour variability characteristics over ~2 year timescales, we found that 18.5 per cent (84 out of 455) BL Lacs showed a stronger bluer when brighter (BWB) trend, whereas 9.0 per cent (41 out of 455) showed a redder when brighter (RWB) trend. The majority (70 per cent) of the BL Lacs showing RWB are h…
In this presentation, we report the results of intraday variability in the optical (BVRI bands) and hard X-ray band (3-79 keV) in a number of blazars. In the optical microvariability studies of the blazars S5 0716+714 and BL Lac, we observed many interesting features such as rapid variability, large variability amplitude, presence of characteristic timescales, bluer-when-brighter achromatic behavior, and single power-law power spectral density. In {\it NuSTAR} observations of several blazars, using spectral and timing analysis, we found similar features consistent with the optical studies. In …
In this work, we present the results of our multi-band microvariability study of the famous blazar BL Lac. We performed microvariablity observations of the source in the optical VRI bands for 4 nights in the year 2016. We studied the intranight flux and spectral variability of the source in detail with an objective to characterize microvariability in the blazars, a frequently observed phenomenon in blazars. The results show that the source often displays a fast flux variability with an amplitude as large as ~ 0.2 magnitude within a few hours, and that the color variability in the similar time …
Rapid variability in the radio flux density of the BL Lac object PKSB1144-379 has been observed at four frequencies, ranging from 1.5 to 15 GHz, with the VLA and the University of Tasmania's Ceduna antenna. Intrinsic and line of sight effects were examined as possible causes of this variability, with interstellar scintillation best explaining the frequency dependence of the variability timescales and modulation indices. This scintillation is consistent with a compact source 20-40 microarcseconds, or 0.15-0.3 pc in size. The inferred brightness temperature for PKSB1144-379 (assuming that the ob…
We present results on a systematic study of flux variability on hourly time-scales in a large sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the 3-79 keV band using data from Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array. Our sample consists of 4 BL Lac objects (BL Lacs), 3 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) 24 Seyfert 1, 42 Seyfert 2 and 8 narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies. We find that in the 3-79 keV band, about 65% of the sources in our sample show significant variations on hourly time scales. Using Mann-Whitney U-test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, we find no difference in the variability behaviou…
The aim of our observations is to investigate the intranight variability properties and the spectral variability of BL Lacertae. 799 optical multi-band observations were intensively made with the Beijing-Arizona-Taiwan-Connecticut (BATC) 60/90cm Schmidt telescope during the outburst composed of two subsequent flares in 2005. The second flare, whose rising phase lasted at least 44 days, was observed with amplitudes of more than 1.1 mag in three BATC optical bands. In general, on intranight timescale the amplitude of variability and the variation rate are larger at the shorter wavelength, and th…
We report an extension of our program to search for radio-quiet BL Lac candidates using intra-night optical variability (INOV) as a probe. The present INOV observations cover a well-defined representative set of 10 `radio-quiet weak-emission-line quasars' (RQWLQs), selected from a newly published sample of 46 such sources, derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Data release 7). Intra-night CCD monitoring of the 10 RQWLQs was carried out in 18 sessions lasting at least 3.5 hours. For each session, differential light curves (DLCs) of the target RQWLQ were derived relative to two steady compa…
