Measurements of $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H production and the CP structure of the Yukawa interaction between the Higgs boson and the top quark in the diphoton decay channel
The first observation of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H process in a single Higgs boson decay channel with the full reconstruction of the final state (H$\toγγ$) is presented, with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations ($σ$). The CP structure of Higgs boson couplings to fermions is measured, resulting in an exclusion of the pure CP-odd structure of the top Yukawa coupling at 3.2$σ$. The measurements are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$. The cross section times branching fraction of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H process is measured to be $σ_{\mathrm{t\bar{t}H}}\mathcal{B}_{γγ} =$ 1.56 $^{+0.34}_{-0.32}$ fb, which is compatible with the standard model prediction of 1.13 $^{+0.08}_{-0.11}$ fb. The fractional contribution of the CP-odd component is measured to be $f^{\mathrm{Htt}}_\mathrm{CP} =$ 0.00 $\pm$ 0.33.
ATLAS and CMS recently show the first results from run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. A resonant bump at a mass of around 750 GeV in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum is indicated and the corresponding diphoton production cross section is around 3-10 fb. Motivated by the LHC diphoton excess, we propose that the possible resonance candidate is a Higgs singlet. To produce the Higgs singlet via gluon-gluon fusion process, we embed the Higgs singlet in the framework of vector-like triplet quark (VLTQ) model. As a result, the Higgs singlet decaying to diphoton final s…
Current Higgs data at the Large Hadron Collider is compatible with a SM signal at the 2$σ$ level, but the central value of the signal strength in the diphoton channel is enhanced with respect to the SM expectation. If the enhancement resides in the diphoton partial decay width, the data could be accommodated in the Minimally Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with highly mixed light staus. We revisit the issue of vacuum instability induced by large mixing in the stau sector, including effects of a radiatively-corrected tau Yukawa coupling. Further, we emphasize the importance of taking into …
We use a sample of diphoton + dijet events to measure the effective cross section of double parton interactions, which is found to be $σ_{\rm eff} = 19.3$ $\pm$ $1.4({\rm stat})$ $\pm$ $7.8({\rm syst})$ mb. The sample was collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb$^{-1}$.
A recent signal of 750 GeV diphotons at the LHC can be explained within the framework of supersymmetric unification by the introduction of vector quarks and leptons with Yukawa couplings to a singlet S that describes the 750 GeV resonance. We study the most general set of theories that allow successful gauge coupling unification, and find that these Yukawa couplings are severely constrained by renormalization group behavior: they are independent of ultraviolet physics and flow to values at the TeV scale that we calculate precisely. As a consequence the vector quarks and leptons must be light; …
A search for a narrow diphoton mass resonance is presented based on data from 3.0 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity from p-bar p collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of a resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching fraction of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. The resulting limits exclude Higgs bosons with masses below 106 GeV at a 95% Bayesian credibility level (C.L.) for one fermiophobic benchmark model.
A very plausible explanation for the recently observed diphoton excess at the 13 TeV LHC is a (pseudo)scalar with mass around 750 GeV, which couples to a gluon pair and to a photon pair through loops involving vector-like quarks (VLQs). To accommodate the observed rate, the required Yukawa couplings tend to be large. A large Yukawa coupling would rapidly run up with the scale and quickly reach the perturbativity bound, indicating that new physics, possibly with a strong dynamics origin, is near by. The case becomes stronger especially if the ATLAS observation of a large width persists. In this…
We report on a search for large extra spatial dimensions in the dielectron and diphoton channels using a data sample of 1.05 \invfb of \ppb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The invariant mass spectrum of the data agrees well with the prediction of the standard model. We find 95% C.L. lower limits on the effective Planck scale between 2.1 and 1.3 TeV for 2 to 7 extra dimensions.
In this paper, we study the recent 750 GeV diphoton excess in the Hill Model with vector-like fermions, in which the singlet-like Higgs boson is chosen as 750 GeV resonance and is mainly produced by the gluon fusion through vector-like top and bottom quarks. Meanwhile its diphoton decay rate is greatly enhanced by the vector-like lepton. Under the current experimental and theoretical constraints, we present the viable parameter space that fits the 750 GeV diphoton signal strength at 13 TeV LHC. We find that the heavier vector-like fermion masses are, the smaller mixing angle $θ$ is required. T…
We present results of searches for diphoton resonances produced both inclusively and also in association with a vector boson (W or Z) using 100 pb^{-1} of p\bar p collisions using the CDF detector. We set upper limits on the product of cross section times branching ratio for both p\bar p\toγγ+ X and p\bar p\toγγ+ W/Z. Comparing the inclusive production to the expectations from heavy sgoldstinos we derive limits on the supersymmetry-breaking scale sqrt{F} in the TeV range, depending on the sgoldstino mass and the choice of other parameters. Also, using a NLO prediction for the associated produc…
We report on a search for new particles in the diphoton channel using a data sample of $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$. The diphoton invariant mass spectrum of the data agrees well with the standard model expectation. We set upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio for the Randall-Sundrum graviton, as a function of diphoton mass. We subsequently derive lower limits on the graviton mass of 459 GeV$/c^{2}$ and 963 GeV$/c^{2}$, at the 95% confidence lev…
This letter reports a measurement of the cross section of prompt isolated photon pair production in p\bar p collisions at a total energy \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using data of 5.36/fb integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured cross section, differential in basic kinematic variables, is compared with three perturbative QCD predictions, a Leading Order (LO) parton shower calculation and two Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations. The NLO calculations reproduce most aspects of the data. By including photon radiation from quarks before and after h…
We present the results of a search for supersymmetry with gauge-mediated breaking and $\NONE\toγ\Gravitino$ in the $γγ$+missing transverse energy final state. In 2.6$\pm$0.2 \invfb of $p{\bar p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$=$1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector we observe no candidate events, consistent with a standard model background expectation of 1.4$\pm$0.4 events. We set limits on the cross section at the 95% C.L. and place the world's best limit of 149 \gevc on the \none mass at $τ_{\tildeχ_1^0}$$\ll$1 ns. We also exclude regions in the \none\ mass-lifetime plane for $τ_{\tildeχ_1^0}$…
This article reports a measurement of the cross section of prompt isolated photon pair production in pp collisions at a total energy \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using data of 5.36 fb-1 integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured cross section, differential in basic kinematic variables, is compared with three perturbative QCD predictions, a leading order (LO) parton shower calculation and two next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. The NLO calculations reproduce most aspects of the data. By including photon radiation from quarks before and after har…
Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulous, and Dvali have proposed a model of low-scale quantum gravity featuring large extra dimensions. In this model, the exchange of Kaluza-Klein towers of gravitons can enhance the production rate of electron and photon pairs at high invariant mass in proton-antiproton collisions. The amount of enhancement is characterized by the parameter $M_S$, the fundamental Planck scale in the bulk extra dimensions. We have searched for this effect using 100 pb$^{-1}$ of diphoton data and 110 pb$^{-1}$ of dielectron data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab at $\sqrt{s}=1.…
Recent searches conducted at the Fermilab Tevatron for the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel are reported using 7.0 fb$^{-1}$ and 8.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the CDF and D0 experiments, respectively. Although the standard model (SM) branching fraction is small, the diphoton final state is appealing due to better diphoton mass resolution compared with dijet final states. In addition, other models --- such as fermiophobic models where the Higgs does not couple to fermions --- predict much larger branching fractions for the diphoton decay. Here, results are presented for both a SM …
Recently, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations report excesses around $750$ GeV in the diphoton channels. This might be the evidence which reveals new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we consider models with a $750$ GeV scalar and vector-like particles, which couple each other through Yukawa couplings. The diphoton decay of the scalar is enhanced by the loop diagrams involving the extra colored particles. We investigate not only the setup required by the excesses, but also the LHC constraints, especially concerned with the vector-like particles. We consider the scenario that the e…
This article reports a measurement of the production cross section of prompt isolated photon pairs in proton-antiproton collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.36/fb. The cross section is presented as a function of kinematic variables sensitive to the reaction mechanisms. The results are compared with three perturbative QCD calculations: (1) a leading order parton shower Monte Carlo, (2) a fixed next-to-leading order calculation and (3) a next-to-leading order/next-to-next-to-leading-log…
The significance of discovering the boson of 750 GeV is beyond finding a single heavy boson, because it may hint the location of the scale for new physics beyond the standard model which is the target of long-time exploration. There have been many models to explain the diphoton excess observed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations and the BLMSSM is one of them. The BLMSSM is an extension of the minimal supersymmetric model where baryon and lepton numbers are local gauge symmetries. We analyze the decay channels $Φ\rightarrow gg$, $Φ\rightarrowγγ$, $Φ\rightarrow Zγ$, and $Φ\rightarrow \bar{t}t,\;…
After the discovery of a Higgs boson, the measurements of its properties are at the forefront of research. The determination of the associated production of a Higgs boson and a pair of top quarks is of particular importance as the ttH Yukawa coupling is large and thus an excellent probe for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). For the complete LHC Run-1 dataset, the combined ATLAS and CMS signal strength (defined as the ratio of measured cross-section to the SM prediction) was $μ=2.3^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$, which indicated a mild excess with respect to the SM expectation. The results of the ttH sea…
We discuss the 750 GeV diphoton excess at the LHC@13TeV in the framework of leptophobic U(1)$^\prime$ model inspired by $E_6$ grand unified theory (GUT). In this model, the Standard Model (SM) chiral fermions carry charges under extra U(1)$^\prime$ gauge symmetry which is spontaneously broken by a U(1)$^\prime$-charged singlet scalar ($Φ$). In addition, extra quarks and leptons are introduced to achieve the anomaly-free conditions, which is a natural consequence of the assumed $E_6$ GUT. These new fermions are vectorlike under the SM gauge group but chiral under new U(1)$^\prime$, and their ma…
Searches are presented for heavy scalar (H) and pseudoscalar (A) Higgs bosons posited in the two doublet model (2HDM) extensions of the standard model (SM). These searches are based on a data sample of pp collisions collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 inverse femtobarns. The decays H to hh and A to Zh, where h denotes an SM-like Higgs boson, lead to events with three or more isolated charged leptons or with a photon pair accompanied by one or more isolated leptons. The search results ar…
A measurement of inclusive and differential fiducial cross-sections for the production of the Higgs boson decaying into two photons is performed using $139~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of proton--proton collision data recorded at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The inclusive cross-section times branching ratio, in a fiducial region closely matching the experimental selection, is measured to be $67\pm 6$ fb, which is in agreement with the state-of-the-art Standard Model prediction of $64\pm 4$ fb. Extrapolating this result to the full phase space and correcting for …
A search is performed for Higgs bosons produced in association with top quarks using the diphoton decay mode of the Higgs boson. Selection requirements are optimized separately for leptonic and fully hadronic final states from the top quark decays. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ at 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess over the background prediction is observed and upper limits are set on the $t\bar{t}H$ production…
We consider the diphoton resonance at the 13 TeV LHC in the context of SU(5) grand unification. A leading candidate to explain this resonance is a standard model singlet scalar decaying to a pair of photon by means of vector-like fermionic loops. We demonstrate the effect of the vector-like multiplets (5, 5 bar) and (10, 10 bar) on the evolution of the gauge couplings and perturbatively evaluate the weak scale values of the new couplings and masses run down from the unification scale. We use these masses and couplings to explain the diphoton resonance after considering the new dijet constraint…
We report a measurement of the rate of prompt diphoton production in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96 ~\hbox{TeV}$ using a data sample of 207 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). The background from non-prompt sources is determined using a statistical method based on differences in the electromagnetic showers. The cross section is measured as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, and the azimuthal angle between the two photons and is found to be consistent with perturbative QCD predictions.
At hadron colliders, the leading production mechanism for a pair of photons is from quark-anti-quark annihilation at the tree level. However, due to large gluon-gluon luminosity, the loop-induced process $gg\to γγ$ provides a substantial contribution. In particular, the amplitudes mediated by the top quark become important at the $t \bar t$ threshold and above. In this letter we present the first complete computation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections (up to $α_S^3$) to this process, including contributions from the top quark. These entail two-loop diagrams with massive propagators…
Gravity can become strong at the TeV scale in the theory of extra dimensions. An effective Lagrangian can be used to describe the gravitational interactions below a cut-off scale. In this work, we study the diphoton production in $γγ$, $p\bar p$, and $e^+ e^-$ collisions in the model of low scale gravity. Since in the standard model photon-photon scattering only occurs via box diagrams, the cross section is highly suppressed. Thus, photon-photon scattering opens an interesting opportunity for studying the new gravity interaction, which allows tree-level photon couplings. In addition, we also e…
We present a $q_T$-resummed calculation of diphoton production at order N$^3$LL$^\prime$+NNLO. To reach the primed level of accuracy we have implemented the recently published three-loop $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$ virtual corrections in the $q\bar{q}$ channel and the three-loop transverse momentum dependent beam functions and combined them with the existing infrastructure of CuTe-MCFM, a code performing resummation at order N$^3$LL. While the primed predictions are parametrically not more accurate, one typically observes from lower orders and other processes that they are the dominant effect of the …
Results are presented for an extraction of the top quark Yukawa coupling from top quark-antiquark ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) kinematic distributions in the lepton plus jets final state in proton-proton collisions, based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.8 fb$^{-1}$. Corrections from weak boson exchange, including Higgs bosons, between the top quarks can produce large distortions of differential distributions near the energy threshold of $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production. Therefore, precise measurements of these di…
We consider the possibility that the recently observed diphoton excess at $\sim 750$ GeV can be explained by the decay of a scalar particle ($φ$) to photons. If the scalar is the remnant of a symmetry-breaking sector of some new gauge symmetry, its coupling to photons can be generated by loops of the charged massive vectors of the broken symmetry. If these new $W^\prime$ vector bosons carry color, they can also generate an effective coupling to gluons. In this case the diphoton excess could be entirely explained in a simplified model containing just $φ$ and $W^\prime$. On the other hand if $W^…
The renormalizable coloron model, which has previously been shown in the literature to be consistent with a wide array of theoretical and precision electroweak constraints, includes a pair of spinless bosons (one scalar, one pseudoscalar). We show that either of them, or both together if they are degenerate, could be responsible for the diphoton resonance signal for which both CMS and ATLAS have seen evidence. Because either of these bosons would be produced and decay through loops of spectator fermions, the absence of signals in dijet, $t\bar{t}$, and electroweak boson pair channels is not a …
A measurement of the Higgs boson Yukawa coupling to the top quark is presented using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$, recorded with the CMS detector. The coupling strength with respect to the standard model value, $Y_\mathrm{t}$, is determined from kinematic distributions in $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ final states containing ee, $μμ$, or e$μ$ pairs. Variations of the Yukawa coupling strength lead to modified distributions for $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production. In particular, the distributions of the mass of the $\mathrm{t\ba…
We calculate the $gg\toγγ$ amplitude by including the $t\bar t$ bound-state effects near their mass threshold. In terms of the non-relativistic expansion of the amplitude, the LO contribution is an energy-independent term in the one-loop amplitude. We include the NLO contribution described by the non-relativistic Green function and part of the NNLO contribution. Despite a missing NLO piece which can be accomplished with the two-loop-level amplitude via massive quarks, the shape of the diphoton mass spectrum is predicted with a good accuracy. Thanks to the simple and clean nature of the observa…
The chiral anomaly provides a smoking-gun evidence of a new confining gauge theory. Motivated by a reported event excess in a diphoton invariant mass distribution at the LHC, we discuss a scenario that a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNG) boson of a new QCD-like theory is produced by gluon fusion and decays into a pair of the standard model gauge bosons. Despite the strong dynamics, the production cross section and the decay widths are determined by anomaly matching condition. The excess can be explained by the pNG boson with mass of around 750 GeV. The model also predicts exotic hadrons such as a c…
The measurement of the Yukawa coupling of the top quark is one important goal of particle physics after the discovery of the Higgs boson. There are two processes that offer the possibility to directly measure the Yukawa coupling of the top quark at the LHC. These are the production of a top-antitop-quark pair in association with a Higgs boson via the strong interaction ($t\bar{t}H$) and the electroweak production of a single top quark and a Higgs boson ($tH$). In the Standard Model, the cross section for $tH$ production is much smaller than the cross section for $t\bar{t}H$ production as there…
Probing the $CP$ nature of the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling in $t\bar{t}H$ and $tH$ events with $H \to b\bar{b}$ decays using the ATLAS detector at the LHC
A measurement of the production processes of the recently discovered Higgs boson is performed in the two-photon final state using 5.4 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The number of observed Higgs boson decays to diphotons divided by the corresponding Standard Model prediction, called the signal strength, is found to be $μ= 1.17 \pm 0.27$ at the value of the Higgs boson mass measured by ATLAS, $m_{H}$ = 125.4 GeV. The analysis is optimized to measure the signal stre…
We propose a hypothetical heavy leptonium, the scalar bound state of an exotic lepton-antilepton pair, as a candidate for the recent 750 GeV resonance in the early LHC Run 2 data. Such a para-leptonium is dominantly produced via photon-photon fusion at the LHC and decays into a photon pair with a significant branching fraction. In addition, our model predicts a companion spin-1 ortho-leptonium bound state, which can decay to $W^+W^-$, $f\bar{f}$ and three photons. Under the LHC and the electroweak precision observables bounds, we find that the observed excess of 750 GeV diphoton events can be …
In this paper we study the direct production of the diphoton resonance $X$ which has been suggested by 2015 data at the LHC, in $e^+e^-\to Xγ/XZ$ processes at the ILC. We derive an analytic expression for the scattering amplitudes of these processes, and present a comprehensive analysis for determining the properties of $X$ at the ILC. A realistic simulation study for $e^+e^-\to Xγ$ is performed based on the full detector simulation to demonstrate the capabilities of the ILC experiment. Complementary to the searches at the LHC, prospects of the measurement of the absolute values of production …
We demonstrate that four top-quark production is a powerful tool to constrain the top Yukawa coupling. The constraint is robust in the sense that it does not rely on the Higgs boson decay. Taking into account the projection of the $t\bar{t}H$ production by the ATLAS collaobration, we obtain a bound on Higgs boson width, $Γ_H\leq 3.1~Γ_H^{\rm SM}$, at the 14 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of $300~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. Increasing the luminosity to $500~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ yields $Γ_H\leq 2.1~Γ_H^{\rm SM}$.
The observation of $t\bar th(125)$ production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the first direct measurement of the top Yukawa coupling. It opens the window on an extra top Yukawa coupling, $ρ_{tt}$, from a second Higgs doublet, without a $Z_2$ symmetry to forbid flavor changing neutral Higgs couplings. We show that $t\bar th$ and Higgs property measurements at the High Luminosity LHC can constrain the ${\rm Re}\,ρ_{tt}$--${\rm Im}\,ρ_{tt}$ parameter space that could drive electroweak baryogenesis, but the $Γ_h$ width measurement must be considerably improved beyond current projections.
We consider the diphoton excess observed by ATLAS and CMS using the most up-to-date data and estimate the preferred enhancement in the production rate between 8 TeV and 13 TeV. Within the framework of effective field theory (EFT), we then show that for both spin-0 and spin-2 Standard Model (SM) gauge-singlet resonances, two of the three processes S to ZZ, S to Z gamma, and S to WW must occur with a non-zero rate. Moreover, we demonstrate that these branching ratios are highly correlated in the EFT. Couplings of S to additional SM states may be constrained and differentiated by comparing the S …
Preliminary ATLAS and CMS results from the first 13 TeV LHC run have encountered an intriguing excess of events in the diphoton channel around the invariant mass of 750 GeV. We investigate a possibility that the current excess is due to a heavy resonance decaying to light metastable states, which in turn give displaced decays to very highly collimated $e^+e^-$ pairs. Such decays may pass the photon selection criteria, and successfully mimic the diphoton events, especially at low counts. We investigate two classes of such models, characterized by the following underlying production and decay ch…
With no New Physics seen at the LHC, a second Higgs doublet remains attractive and plausible. The ratio ${\cal R}_B^{μ/τ} = {\cal B}(B \to μ\barν)/{\cal B}(B \to τ\barν)$ is predicted at 0.0045 in both the Standard Model and the type II two Higgs doublet model, but it can differ if extra Yukawa couplings exist in Nature, which we deem an experimental issue. Considering recent Belle update on $B \to μ\barν$, we show that in the general two Higgs doublet model, the ratio could be up by a factor of two, which can be probed by the Belle~II experiment with just a few ab$^{-1}$.
We study the prospect of probing electroweak baryogenesis driven by an extra bottom Yukawa coupling $ρ_{bb}$ in a general two Higgs doublet model via electric dipole moment (EDM) measurements and at the collider experiments. The parameter space receives meaningful constraints from 125 GeV Higgs $h$ boson signal strength measurements as well as several heavy Higgs boson searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In addition, we show that the asymmetry of the CP asymmetry of inclusive $B\to X_s γ$ decay would provide complementary probe. A discovery is possible at the LHC via $bg\to bA \to b Z…
It is extremely challenging to probe the charm-quark Yukawa coupling at hadron colliders primarily due to the large Standard Model (SM) background (including $h\to b\bar b$) and the lack of an effective trigger for the signal $h\to c\bar c$. We examine the feasibility of probing this coupling at the LHC via a Higgs radiative decay $h\rightarrow c\bar{c}γ$. The existence of an additional photon in the final state may help for the signal identification and background suppression. Adopting a refined triggering strategy and utilizing basic machine learning, we find that a coupling limit of about 8…
Current limits from the LHC on fourth generation quarks are already at the unitarity bound of 500 GeV or so. If they exist, the strong Yukawa couplings are turning nonperturbative, and may form bound states. We study the domain of m_{b'} and m_{t'} in the range of 500 to 700 GeV, where we expect binding energies are mainly of Yukawa origin, with QCD subdominant. To be consistent with electroweak precision tests, the t' and b' quarks have to be nearly degenerate, exhibiting a new "isospin". Comparing relativistic expansion with a relativistic bound state approach, we find the most interesting i…
When the charged Higgs boson is too heavy to be produced in pairs, the predominant production mechanism at Linear Colliders is via the single charged Higgs boson production processes, such as $e^-e^+ \to b \bar c H^+, τ\bar νH^+$ and $γγ\to b \bar c H^+, τ\bar νH^+$. We show that the yield of a heavy charged Higgs boson at a $γγ$ collider is typically one or two orders of magnitude larger than that at an $e^-e^+$ collider. Furthermore, a polarized $γγ$ collider can determine the chirality of the Yukawa couplings of fermions with charged Higgs boson via single charged Higgs boson production, an…
The CMS and ATLAS reports on a possible excess of diphoton events at $750$ GeV are the cause of great excitement and hope. We show that a pseudoscalar axion coupled to the topological density of hypercharge, suggested in the past by Brustein and Oaknin as a candidate for inducing baryogenesis, can explain the signal in the diphoton channel. The hypercharge axion (HCA) can also decay to $Zγ$ and $ZZ$. The expected number of events in these channels is too small to have been detected, but such decays should be observed in the future. The HCA can be produced via vector boson fusion (VBF) or via a…
We suggest searching for the charged Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via $cg \to b H^+ \to b t \bar b$. In the general two Higgs Doublet Model, extra top Yukawa couplings $ρ_{tc}$ and $ρ_{tt}$ can drive the disappearance of antimatter from the Universe, while $\bar cbH^+$ and $\bar tbH^+$ couple with strength $ρ_{tc}V_{tb}$ and $ρ_{tt}V_{tb}$, respectively. For $ρ_{tc},\, ρ_{tt} \sim 0.5$ and $m_{H^+} \sim 300$--500 GeV, evidence could emerge from LHC Run 2 data at hand, and discovery by adding Run 3 data in the near future.
The ATLAS and CMS collaborations observed a mild excess in the associated Higgs production with a top-quark pair ($t\bar t h$) and reported the signal strengths of $ μ_{tth}^{\rm ATLAS}=1.81\pm 0.80$ and $μ_{tth}^{\rm CMS}=2.75\pm 0.99 $ based on the data collected at $\sqrt{s}$= 7 and 8 TeV. Although, at the current stage, there is no obvious indication whether the excess is real or due to statistical fluctuations, here we perform a case study of this mild excess by exploiting the strong entanglement between the associated Higgs production with a single top quark ($thX$) and $t\bar t h$ produ…
We investigate the implications of a minimal $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry extension of the standard model at the LHC. To achieve the spontaneous symmetry breaking, a heavy Higgs doublet of the $SU(2)$ is introduced. To obtain an anomaly free model and the decays of new charged gauge bosons, we include a vector-like quark doublet. We also employ a real scalar boson to dictate the heavy Higgs production via the gluon-gluon fusion processes. It is found that the new gauge coupling and the masses of new gauge bosons can be strictly bounded by the electroweak $ρ$-parameter and dilepton resonance experime…
Constraining the Higgs boson properties is a cornerstone of the LHC program and future colliders. In this Snowmass contribution, we study the potential to directly probe the Higgs-top CP-structure via the $t\bar{t}h$ production at the HL-LHC, 100 TeV FCC and muon colliders. We find the limits on the CP phase ($α$) at 95% CL are $|α| \lesssim 36^\circ$ with dileptonic $t\bar t (h\to b\bar b) $ and $|α| \lesssim 25^\circ$ with combined $t\bar t (h\to γγ) $ at the HL-LHC. The 100 TeV FCC brings a significant improvement in sensitivity with $|α| \lesssim 3^\circ$ for the dileptonic $t\bar t (h\to …
Electroweak baryogenesis can be driven by the top quark in a general two Higgs doublet model with extra Yukawa couplings. Higgs quartics provide the first order phase transition, while extra top Yukawa coupling $ρ_{tt}$ can fuel the cosmic baryon asymmetry through the $λ_t\,{\rm Im}\,ρ_{tt}$ product, with flavor-changing $ρ_{tc}$ coupling as backup. The impressive ACME 2018 bound on the electron electric dipole moment calls for an extra electron coupling $ρ_{ee}$ for exquisite cancellation among dangerous diagrams, broadening the baryogenesis solution space. The mechanism suggests that extra Y…
We explore the implications of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) with dimension-six terms involving the Higgs boson and third-generation fermion fields on the rate of Higgs boson production and decay into fermions, on the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the electron, and on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We study the consequences of allowing these additional terms for each flavor separately and for combinations of two flavors. We find that a complex $τ$ Yukawa coupling can account for the observed baryon asymmetry $Y_B^{\rm obs}$ within current LHC and EDM bounds. A co…
