Superconductors that possess both broken spatial inversion symmetry and spin-orbit interactions exhibit a mix of spin singlet and triplet pairing. Here, we report on measurements of the superconducting properties of electron-doped, strained SrTiO3 films. These films have an enhanced superconducting transition temperature and were previously shown to undergo a transition to a polar phase prior to becoming superconducting. We show that some films show signatures of an unusual superconducting state, such as an in-plane critical field that is higher than both the paramagnetic and orbital pair breaking limits. Moreover, nonreciprocal transport, which reflects the ratio of odd versus even pairing interactions, is observed. Together, these characteristics indicate that these films provide a tunable platform for investigations of unconventional superconductivity.
We investigate characteristic features in the spin response of doped three-dimensional topological insulators with odd-parity unequal-spin superconducting pairing, which are predicted to have gapless Majorana surface modes. These Majorana modes contribute to the local spin susceptibility, giving rise to a characteristic temperature behavior of the Knight shift and the spin-lattice relaxation time in magnetic resonance experiments. Because of their different decay lengths, the Majorana modes can be observed and clearly distinguished from the Dirac modes of the topological insulator by local pro…
We present resistivity and magnetization measurements on proton-irradiated crystals demonstrating that the superconducting state in the doped topological superconductor Nb$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ (x = 0.25) is surprisingly robust against disorder-induced electron scattering. The superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ decreases without indication of saturation with increasing defect concentration, and the corresponding scattering rates far surpass expectations based on conventional theory. The low-temperature variation of the London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ follows a power law ($Δλ(T)\sim T^2$) …
We study the effects of random nonmagnetic impurities on superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ in a Cu-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$, for which four types of pair potentials have been proposed. Although all the candidates belong to $s$-wave symmetry, two orbital degree of freedom in electronic structures enriches the symmetry variety of a Cooper pair such as even-orbital-parity and odd-orbital-parity. We consider realistic electronic structures of Cu-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by using tight-binding Hamiltonian on a hexagonal lattice and consider effects of impurity scatterings through the self-energy of …
We explore possible superconducting states in $t_{2g}$ multi-orbital correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In order to study such systems in a controlled manner, we employ large-scale dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) simulations with the hybridization expansion continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) impurity solver. To determine the pairing symmetry, we go beyond the local DMFT formalism using parquet equations to introduce the momentum dependence in the two-particle vertex and correlation functions. In the strong SOC limit, a singlet, $d$-wave pairing state…
We estimate the contribution of the long-wavelength el-TO-ph interaction and discuss the effect it has on electron pairing in doped polar systems like SrTiO3 and PbTe. The analytical and numerical results presented in the study indicate that the el-TO-ph interaction tends to contribute little to the total strength of electron-phonon coupling in these and related materials. To explain this fact we consider possible reasons why the effect of the polar long-wavelength transverse optical phonons on the coupling constant "lambda" is far less than one might suppose.
We study the superconductivity of spin-polarized electrons in centrosymmetric ferromagnetic metals. Due to the spin-polarization and the Fermi statistics of electrons, the superconducting pairing function naturally has odd parity. According to the parity formula proposed by Fu, Berg, and Sato, odd-parity pairing leads to conventional first-order topological superconductivity when a normal metal has an odd number of Fermi surfaces. Here, we derive generalized parity formulae for the topological invariants characterizing higher-order topology of centrosymmetric superconductors. Based on the form…
We use first-principles methods to study doped strong ferroelectrics (taking BaTiO$_3$ as a prototype). Here we find a strong coupling between itinerant electrons and soft polar phonons in doped BaTiO$_3$, contrary to Anderson/Blount's weakly coupled electron mechanism for "ferroelectric-like metals". As a consequence, across a polar-to-centrosymmetric phase transition in doped BaTiO$_3$, the total electron-phonon coupling is increased to about 0.6 around the critical concentration, which is sufficient to induce phonon-mediated superconductivity of about 2 K. Lowering the crystal symmetry of d…
We study superconducting states of doped inversion-symmetric Weyl semimetals. Specifically, we consider a lattice model realizing a Weyl semimetal with an inversion symmetry and study the superconducting instability in the presence of a short-ranged attractive interaction. With a phonon-mediated attractive interaction, we find two competing states: a fully gapped finite-momentum (FFLO) pairing state and a nodal even-parity pairing state. We show that, in a BCS-type approximation, the finite-momentum pairing state is energetically favored over the usual even-parity paired state and is robust ag…
We study the pairing symmetry of a doped Kane-Mele model on a honeycomb lattice with on-site Coulomb interaction. The pairing instability of Cooper pair is calculated based on the linearized Eliashberg equation within the random phase approximation (RPA). When the magnitude of the spin-orbit coupling is weak, even-frequency spin-singlet even-parity (ESE) pairing is dominant. On the other hand, with the increase of the spin-orbit coupling, we show that the even-frequency spin-triplet odd-parity (ETO) f-wave pairing exceeds ESE one. ETO f-wave pairing is supported by the longitudinal spin fluctu…
We extend the methods recently introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 036401 (2011) to investigate correlations between two spin-polarons in a quasi-two-dimensional CuO2 layer. The low-energy wavefunctions for two doped holes introduced in a half-filled CuO2 plane with 32 copper and 64 oxygen sites are calculated explicitly using an efficient yet accurate truncation scheme to model the antiferromagnet background. The energetics and wavefucntions show that the charges form three-spin polarons and the spin is carried by a disturbance around the three-spin polaron core. The low-energy band results fr…
We present a polarization and topology resolved study of the low energy band structure in optimally doped superconducting Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Polarization-contrasted measurements allow us to identify and trace all low energy bands expected in models, revealing unexpected symmetry breaking and a surprisingly intertwined Fermi surface topology of hole-like bands near the Brillouin zone center. Band structure correlations across the Gamma-M spin fluctuation wavevector are compared with the superconducting gap anisotropy which suggest a partial scenario…
Interest in topological states of matter exploded over a decade ago with the theoretical prediction and experimental detection of three-dimensional topological insulators, especially in bulk materials that can be tuned out of it by doping. However, their superconducting counterpart, the time-reversal invariant three-dimensional topological superconductor, has evaded discovery thus far. In this work, we provide transport evidence that K-doped $β$-PdBi$_2$ is a 3D time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor. In particular, we find signatures of Majorana surface states protected by time-re…
Experiments on polarized fermion gases performed by trapping ultracold atoms in optical lattices, allow the study of an attractive Hubbard model for which the strength of the on site interaction is tuned by means of a Feshbach resonance. Using a well-known particle-hole transformation we discuss how results obtained for this system can be reinterpreted in the context of a doped repulsive Hubbard model. In particular we show that the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state corresponds to the striped state of the two-dimensional doped positive U Hubbard model. We then use the results of nu…
Temperature-dependent polarized Raman spectra of electron-doped superconducting Pr$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($x \approx 0.12$) single crystals are reported. All four allowed by symmetry even-parity phonons are identified. Phonon mode of B$_{1g}$ symmetry at 222 cm$^{-1}$, which is associated with the c-axis motion of Fe ions, is found to exhibit an anomalous frequency hardening at low temperatures, that signals non-vanishing electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting state and implies that the superconducting gap magnitude $2Δ_c < 27$meV.
Magnetic measurements have been carried out in the superconducting and normal states of the optimally doped nonmagnetic bismuthate superconductor Ba0.63K0.37BiO3. The magnetic data along with previous muSR, resistivity, and tunneling data consistently show that there is a large polaronic enhancement in the density of states and effective electron-phonon coupling constant. The first-principle calculation within the density-functional theory indicates a small electron-phonon coupling constant of about 0.3-0.4, which can only lead to about 1 K superconductivity within the conventional phonon-medi…
Magnetic excitations in Ba(Fe0.94Co0.06)2As2 are studied by polarized inelastic neutron scattering (INS) above and below the superconducting transition. In the superconducting state we find clear evidence for two resonance-like excitations. At a higher energy of about 8 meV there is an isotropic resonance mode with weak dispersion along the c-direction. In addition we find a lower excitation at 4 meV that appears only in the c-polarized channel and whose intensity strongly varies with the L-component of the scattering vector. These resonance excitations behave remarkably similar to the gap mod…
Recently we proposed a theory of point-contact spectroscopy and argued that the splitting of zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in electron-doped cuprate superconductor point-contact spectroscopy is due to the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and d-wave superconducting orders [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 76}, 220504(R) (2007)]. Here we extend the theory to study the tunneling in the ferromagnetic metal/electron-doped cuprate superconductor (FM/EDSC) junctions. In addition to the AF order, the effects of spin polarization, Fermi-wave vector mismatch (FWM) between the FM and EDSC regions, and effectiv…
We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study spin excitations of optimally hole-doped superconductor Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_{2}$ ($T_c=38$ K). In the normal state, the imaginary part of the dynamic susceptibility, $χ^{\prime\prime}(Q,ω)$, shows magnetic anisotropy for energies below $\sim$7 meV with c-axis polarized spin excitations larger than that of the in-plane component. Upon entering into the superconducting state, previous unpolarized INS experiments have shown that spin gaps at $\sim$5 and 0.75 meV open at wave vectors $Q=(0.5,0.5,0)$ and $(0.5,0.5,1)$, respecti…
We consider a spin Hamiltonian describing $d$-$d$ exchange interactions between localized spins $d$ of a finite antiferromagnet as well as $p$-$d$ interactions between a conducting hole ($p$) and localized spins. The spin Hamiltonian is solved numerically with use of Lanczos method of diagonalization. We conclude that $p$-$d$ exchange interaction leads to localization of magnetic polarons. Quantum fluctuations of the antiferromagnet strengthen this effect and make the formation of polarons localized in one site possible even for weak $p$-$d$ coupling. Total energy calculations, including the k…
A comprehensive theory of superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ must explain experiments that suggest even parity superconducting order and others that suggest broken time reversal symmetry. Completeness further requires that the theory applies to Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, a Mott-Hubbard semiconductor that exhibits an unprecedented insulator-to-metal transition driven by very small electric field, and also by doping with very small concentration of electrons, leading to a metallic state proximate to ferromagnetism. A valence transition model, previously proposed for superconducting cuprates [Phys. Rev. B {\…
In-plane, inter-carrier correlations in hole doped cuprates are investigated by ab initio multiconfiguration calculations. The dressed carriers display features that are reminiscent of both Zhang-Rice (ZR) CuO4 singlet states and Jahn-Teller polarons. The interaction between these quasiparticles is repulsive. At doping levels that are high enough, the interplay between long-range unscreened Coulomb interactions and long-range phase coherence among the O-ion half-breathing vibrations on the ZR plaquettes may lead to a strong reduction of the effective adiabatic energy barrier associated to each…
We use inelastic neutron scattering with spin polarization analysis to study the magnetic excitations in the normal and superconducting states of YBa2Cu3O6.9. Polarization analysis allows us to determine the spin polarization of the magnetic excitations and to separate them from phonon scattering. In the normal state, we find unambiguous evidence of magnetic excitations over the 10-60meV range of the experiment with little polarization dependence to the excitations. In the superconducting state, the magnetic response is enhanced near the "resonance energy" and above. At lower energies, 10<E<30…
The interaction Hamiltonian for a system of polarons a la Feynman in the presence of long range Coulomb interaction is derived and the dielectric function is computed in mean field. For large enough concentration a liquid of such particles becomes unstable. The onset of the instability is signaled by the softening of a collective optical mode in which all electrons oscillate in phase in their respective self-trapping potential. We associate the instability with a metallization of the system. Optical experiments in slightly doped cuprates and doped nickelates are analyzed within this theory. We…
We use unpolarized and polarized neutron scattering to study the temperature and polarization dependence of low-energy magnetic fluctuations in nearly-optimal-doped NaFe$_{0.9785}$Co$_{0.0215}$As, with coexisting superconductivity ($T_{\rm c}\approx19$ K) and weak antiferromagnetic order ($T_{\rm N}\approx30$ K, ordered moment $\approx0.02$ $μ_{\rm B}$/Fe). A single spin resonance mode with intensity tracking the superconducting order parameter is observed, although energy of the mode only softens slightly on approaching $T_{\rm c}$. Polarized neutron scattering reveals that the single resonan…
In a recent Letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 036401 (2011)), Lau, et al. investigated the single hole problem in an effective model containing Cu $d$ and O $2p$ orbitals by exact diagonalization on clusters composed of 32 CuO$_2$ unit cells. With full quantum fluctuations due to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) backgroud, they found that spin-polaron solutions with spin 3/2 become lowest energy solutions in certain region of Brillouin zone (BZ), which they claimed no similiar solutions were obtained in other models or approximations before. In this Comment, we would like to point out that such high-sp…
Transverse-field muon spin relaxation measurements have been carried out on the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt3 doped with small amounts of Pd. We find that the critical Pd concentration for the emergence of the large-moment antiferromagnetic phase is ~0.6 at.%Pd. At the same Pd content, superconductivity is completely suppressed. The existence of a magnetic quantum critical point in the phase diagram, which coincides with the critical point for superconductivity, provides evidence for ferromagnetic spin-fluctuation mediated odd-parity superconductivity, which competes with antiferromagnetic…
In the last two decades there have been tremendous attempts to built an adequate theory of high-temperature superconductivity. Most studies (including our efforts) used some model Hamiltonians with input parameters not directly related to the material. The dielectric response function of electrons in strongly correlated high-temperature superconductors is apriori unknown. Hence one has to start with the generic Hamiltonian including unscreened Coulomb and Froehlich electron-phonon interactions operating on the same scale since any ad-hoc assumption on their range and relative magnitude might f…
