In the present paper we investigate the structure of relativistic stars in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The mass-radius relations are obtained for realistic hadronic and for strange quark star equations of state, and for a wide range of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter $α$. Even though the deviations from general relativity for nonzero values of $α$ can be large enough, they are still comparable with the variations due to different modern realistic equations of state if we restrict ourselves to moderate value of $α$. That is why the current observations of the neutron star masses and radii alone can not impose stringent constraints on the value of the parameter $α$. Nevertheless some rough constraints on $α$ can be put. The existence of stable stellar mass black holes imposes $\sqrtα\lesssim 2.6 {\rm km}$ for $α>0$ while the requirement that the maximum neutron star mass should be greater than two solar masses gives $\sqrt{|α|}\lesssim 3.9 {\rm km}$ for $α<0$. We also present an exact solution describing the structure of relativistic stars with uniform energy density in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity.
We investigate axial quasi-normal modes of realistic neutron stars in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton gravity. We consider 8 realistic equations of state containing nuclear, hyperonic, and hybrid matter. We focus on the fundamental curvature mode and compare the results with those of pure Einstein theory. We observe that the frequency of the modes is increased by the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton, while the impact on the damping time is typically smaller. Interestingly, we obtain that universal relations valid in pure Einstein theory still hold for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton gravity, a…
Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is a theoretically well-motivated alternative theory of gravity emerging as a low-energy 4-dimensional model from heterotic string theory. Its rotating black hole solutions are known numerically and can have macroscopic deviations from the Kerr black holes of Einstein's gravity. Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity can thus be tested with observations of astrophysical black holes. In the present paper, we simulate observations of the reflection spectrum of thin accretion disks with present and future X-ray facilities to understand whether X-ray reflection…
The innermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs) around rapidly rotating neutron stars are studied in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. Universal relations for properly scaled ISCO properties are extended from General Relativity to dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and additional relations are obtained.
We consider gravitational collapse in the recently proposed 4D limit of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We show that for collapse of a sphere made of homogeneous dust the process is qualitatively similar to the case of pure Einstein's gravity. The singularity forms as the endstate of collapse and it is trapped behind the horizon at all times. However, and differently from Einstein's theory, as a consequence of the Gauss-Bonnet term, the collapsing cloud reaches the singularity with zero velocity, and the time of formation of the singularity is delayed with respect to the pure Einstein case.
We study the charge of the 4D-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole by a negative charge and a positive charge of a particle-antiparticle pair on the horizons r- and r+, respectively. We show that there are two types of the Schwarzschild black hole. We show also that the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole charge has quantified values. We obtain the Hawking-Bekenstein formula with two logarithmic corrections, the second correction depends on the cosmological constant and the black hole charge. Finally, we study the thermodynamics of the EGB-AdS black hole.
We consider black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet(EGB) gravity in a dynamical setup and also the stationary black hole in recently discovered\cite{Glavan} $4$-dimensional novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. For dynamical EGB black hole in completely local settings we calculate the temperature associated with the horizon. For the stationary black hole in $4$-dimensional novel EGB theory we explore the thermodynamic properties including calculation of temperature and entropy.
A (3+1)-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet effective description of gravity has been recently formulated as the $D \to 4$ limit of the higher dimensional field equations after the rescaling of the coupling constant. This approach has been recently extended to the four-dimensional Einstein-Lovelock gravity. Although validity of the regularization procedure has not been shown for the general case, but only for a wide class of metrics, the black-hole solution obtained as a result of such a regularization is also an exact solution in the well defined 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory suggested by Aok…
The objective of this paper is to analyze the weak deflection angle of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of plasma medium. To attain our results, we implement the Gibbons and Werner approach and use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to Einstein gravity to acquire the resulting deflection angle of photon's ray in the weak field limit. Moreover, we illustrate the behavior of plasma medium and non-plasma mediums on the deflection of photon's ray in the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Similarly, we observe the graphical influences of deflection angle on Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity…
We consider the Gauss-Bonnet corrected Bardeen black hole solution in 4-D AdS space-time. The solution is obtained by the limiting procedure adopted by Glavan and Lin in 4-D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The general form of first law of black hole thermodynamics is utilized to calculate various thermodynamics variables. The solution exhibit P-v criticality and belong to the universality class of van-der Waals fluid. The effect of Gauss-Bonnet coupling is investigated on critical parameters and inversion temperature.
To ensure the existence of a well defined linearized gravitational wave equation, we show that the spacetimes in the so-called "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimension" have to be locally conformally flat.
In this paper, we treat 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity as general relativity with an effective stress-energy tensor. We will study the modified Oppenheimer-Snyder-Datt model of the gravitational collapse of a star in a 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole. The inside geometry of the star is described by the spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric and the matter is distributed uniformly without any pre-assumption about its equation of state. The exterior Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole is smoothly matched to the interior geometry without the requirement of any t…
We investigate the absorption cross section of planar scalar massless waves impinging on spherically symmetric black holes which are solutions of the novel 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. Besides the mass of the black hole, the solution depends also on the Gauss-Bonnet constant coupling. Using the partial waves approach, we show that the absorption cross section depends on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. Our numerical results present excellent agreement with the low- and high- frequency approximations, including the so-called sinc approximation.
The recently proposed effective equation of motion for the $4D$- Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity admits a static black hole solution that has, like the Rissner-Nordström charged black hole, two horizons instead of one for the Schwarzschild black hole. This means that the central singularity is timelike instead of spacelike. It should though be noted that in $D\geq5$, the solution always admits only one horizon like the Schwarzshild solution. In the equation defining the horizon, the rescaled Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant appears as a new 'gravitational charge' with a repulsive effect to cause i…
We construct rotating black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a quadratic coupling function. We map the domain of existence of the rotating fundamental solutions, we construct radially excited rotating black holes (including their existence lines), and we show that there are angularly excited rotating black holes. The bifurcation points of the radially and angularly excited solutions branching out of the Schwarzschild solution follow a regular pattern.
We investigated the superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole which is recently inspired by Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)]. We found that the positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling consant $α$ enhances the superradiance, while the negative $α$ suppresses it. The condition for superradiant instability is proved. We also worked out the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole and found that the real part of all the QNMs live beyond the superradiance condition and the imaginary parts are all negative. Therefo…
In [P. Kanti, B. Kleihaus, J. Kunz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 271101 (2011)] it was shown that the four-dimensional Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet theory allows for wormholes without introducing any exotic matter. The numerical solution for the wormhole was obtained there and it was claimed that this solution is gravitationally stable against radial perturbations, what, by now, would mean the only known theoretical possibility for existence of an apparently stable, four-dimensional and asymptotically flat wormhole without exotic matter. Here, more detailed analysis of perturbations shows that the K…
We have investigated tidal forces and geodesic deviation motion in the 4D-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet spacetime. Our results show that tidal force and geodesic deviation motion depend sharply on the sign of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. Comparing with Schwarzschild spacetime, the strength of tidal force becomes stronger for the negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, but is weaker for the positive one. Moreover, tidal force behaves like those in the Schwarzschild spacetime as the coupling constant is negative, and like those in Reissner-Nordström black hole as the constant is positive. We also pr…
The topological classification of critical points of black holes in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to Born-Infeld theory is investigated. Considered independently, Born-infeld corrections to the Einstein action alter the topological charge of critical points of the charged AdS black hole system, whereas the Gauss-Bonnet corrections do not. For the combined system though, the total topological charge of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory is unaltered in the presence of Born-Infeld coupling.
We consider a $(4 + 2k)$ - dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet model with the cosmological $Λ$-term. Exact stable solutions with three constant Hubble-like parameters in this model are obtained. In this case, the multidimensional cosmological model deals with three factor spaces: the external 3-dimensional "our" world and internal subspaces with dimensions $k_1 = k$ and $k_2=k$.
We explore charged black hole solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five dimensions, with a charged scalar hair. We interpret such hairy black holes as the final state of the superradiant instability previously reported for this system. We explore the relation of the hairy black hole solutions with the non-backreacting quasibound states and scalar clouds, as well as with the boson star solutions.
We consider a $(7 + k)$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet model with the cosmological $Λ$-term. A cosmological model with three factor spaces of dimensions $3$, $3$ and $k$, $k > 2$ is considered. Exact stable solutions with three (non-coinciding) Hubble-like parameters in this model are obtained. Some examples of solutions (e.g. with zero variation of the effective gravitational constant $G$) are considered in selected dimensions (for $k = 5, 6$).
We investigate $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-bonnet gravity coupled to exponential electrodynamics in AdS background and found a static, spherically symmetric exact black hole solution. The horizon structure of black hole is discussed. Treating the cosmological constant as pressure, we drive first law of black hole thermodynamics in extended phase space. We compute the electrostatic potential and vacuum polarization of the black hole. To study local thermodynamical stability specific heat of the black hole is computed. Finally, we study Helmholtz free energy to analyse the global stability of black hole…
In this paper, we have presented a compact object model in the framework of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity (EGB) with a linear equation of state considering a metric potential proposed for Buchdahl (1959). The new obtained models satisfy all physical requirements of a physically reasonable stellar object. We analyzed the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant α on the main physical characteristics of the model. We checked that the radial pressure, energy density and anisotropy are well defined and are regular in the interior of the star and are dependent of the values of the coupling cons…
We propose a boundary term to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet action for gravity, which is constructed as the dimensional continuation of the Chern-Weil theorem, and such that the extremization of the full action yields the equations of motion when Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed. When translated into tensorial language, this boundary term is the generalization to this theory of the Katz boundary term and vector for general relativity. The construction allows to deal with a general background and includes the Gibbons-Hawking-Myers boundary term as a special case, when the background is tak…
While quasinormal modes of bosonic fields for the non-trivial $4$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity suggested in [D.~Glavan and C.~Lin, Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 124}, 081301 (2020)] have been recently studied, there is no such study for fermionic fields. Here we calculate quasinormal modes of the Dirac field for spherically symmetric asymptotically flat black hole in this novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. The values of the quasinormal frequencies, calculated by the 6th order WKB method with Padé approximants and the time-domain integration, show that the real part of t…
We studied the instability of the regularized 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet de-Sitter black holes under charged scalar perturbations. The unstable modes satisfy the superradiant condition, but not all modes satisfying the superradiant condition are unstable. The instability occurs when the cosmological constant is small and the black hole charge is not too large. The Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant makes the unstable black hole more unstable when both the black hole charge and cosmological constant are small, and makes the stable black hole more stable when the black hole charge is large.
We summarize our proof that the "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity in Four-Dimensional Spacetime" introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020) does not have consistent field equations, as such the theory does not exist. The proof is given in both the metric and the first order formalisms.
Recently, it is found that the strong cosmic censorship (SCC) is violated in RNdS black hole by a minimal coupled neutral massless scalar field at the linear perturbation level. For the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory which is famous for the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon, there exists the scalar field coupled with the Gauss-Bonnet term. Whether the SCC of the RNdS black hole can be repaired by the non-minimal coupled scalar field perturbation at the linear level becomes an interesting question. In this paper, we firstly investigate the extendibility of the metric beyond the …
The post-Newtonian dynamics of black hole binaries in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories of gravity depends on the so-called "sensitivities", quantities which characterize a black hole's adiabatic response to the time-dependent scalar field environment sourced by its companion. In this work, we calculate numerically the sensitivities of nonrotating black holes, including spontaneously scalarized ones, in three classes of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity: the shift-symmetric, dilatonic and Gaussian theories. When possible, we compare our results against perturbative analytical results, f…
Recently, a novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four dimensions has been introduced [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124 (2020) 081301]. We will investigate cosmological consequences of this model in details. We will consider linear matter density perturbations and also estimate relevant modified gravity parameters. Specially we will concentrate on the growth rate of non-relativistic matter perturbations on top of FRW geometry and show that for a narrow range of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, observational data will be satisfied. In this paper, it is shown that for enough large values of the coupling…
