We propose a novel Enhanced Feature Aggregation and Selection network (EFASNet) for multi-person 2D human pose estimation. Due to enhanced feature representation, our method can well handle crowded, cluttered and occluded scenes. More specifically, a Feature Aggregation and Selection Module (FASM), which constructs hierarchical multi-scale feature aggregation and makes the aggregated features discriminative, is proposed to get more accurate fine-grained representation, leading to more precise joint locations. Then, we perform a simple Feature Fusion (FF) strategy which effectively fuses high-resolution spatial features and low-resolution semantic features to obtain more reliable context information for well-estimated joints. Finally, we build a Dense Upsampling Convolution (DUC) module to generate more precise prediction, which can recover missing joint details that are usually unavailable in common upsampling process. As a result, the predicted keypoint heatmaps are more accurate. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods and achieves the superior performance over three benchmark datasets: the recent big dataset CrowdPose, the COCO keypoint detection dataset and the MPII Human Pose dataset. Our code will be released upon acceptance.
Person search in real-world scenarios is a new challenging computer version task with many meaningful applications. The challenge of this task mainly comes from: (1) unavailable bounding boxes for pedestrians and the model needs to search for the person over the whole gallery images; (2) huge variance of visual appearance of a particular person owing to varying poses, lighting conditions, and occlusions. To address these two critical issues in modern person search applications, we propose a novel Individual Aggregation Network (IAN) that can accurately localize persons by learning to minimize …

Human pose estimation plays an important role in many computer vision tasks and has been studied for many decades. However, due to complex appearance variations from poses, illuminations, occlusions and low resolutions, it still remains a challenging problem. Taking the advantage of high-level semantic information from deep convolutional neural networks is an effective way to improve the accuracy of human pose estimation. In this paper, we propose a novel Cascade Feature Aggregation (CFA) method, which cascades several hourglass networks for robust human pose estimation. Features from differen…
Despite of the recent success of neural networks for human pose estimation, current approaches are limited to pose estimation of a single person and cannot handle humans in groups or crowds. In this work, we propose a method that estimates the poses of multiple persons in an image in which a person can be occluded by another person or might be truncated. To this end, we consider multi-person pose estimation as a joint-to-person association problem. We construct a fully connected graph from a set of detected joint candidates in an image and resolve the joint-to-person association and outlier de…

The pipeline of the proposed system consists of human detection, absolute 3D human root localization, and root-relative 3D single-person pose estimation modules. Our system achieves comparable results with the state-of-the-art 3D single-person pose estimation models without any groundtruth …

We propose to personalize a human pose estimator given a set of test images of a person without using any manual annotations. While there is a significant advancement in human pose estimation, it is still very challenging for a model to generalize to different unknown environments and unseen persons. Instead of using a fixed model for every test case, we adapt our pose estimator during test time to exploit person-specific information. We first train our model on diverse data with both a supervised and a self-supervised pose estimation objectives jointly. We use a Transformer model to build a t…

Video annotation is expensive and time consuming. Consequently, datasets for multi-person pose estimation and tracking are less diverse and have more sparse annotations compared to large scale image datasets for human pose estimation. This makes it challenging to learn deep learning based models for associating keypoints across frames that are robust to nuisance factors such as motion blur and occlusions for the task of multi-person pose tracking. To address this issue, we propose an approach that relies on keypoint correspondences for associating persons in videos. Instead of training the net…

Monocular 3D human pose estimation has made progress in recent years. Most of the methods focus on single persons, which estimate the poses in the person-centric coordinates, i.e., the coordinates based on the center of the target person. Hence, these methods are inapplicable for multi-person 3D pose estimation, where the absolute coordinates (e.g., the camera coordinates) are required. Moreover, multi-person pose estimation is more challenging than single pose estimation, due to inter-person occlusion and close human interactions. Existing top-down multi-person methods rely on human detection…
Multi-person 3D human pose estimation from a single image is a challenging problem, especially for in-the-wild settings due to the lack of 3D annotated data. We propose HG-RCNN, a Mask-RCNN based network that also leverages the benefits of the Hourglass architecture for multi-person 3D Human Pose Estimation. A two-staged approach is presented that first estimates the 2D keypoints in every Region of Interest (RoI) and then lifts the estimated keypoints to 3D. Finally, the estimated 3D poses are placed in camera-coordinates using weak-perspective projection assumption and joint optimization of f…

We present a deployment friendly, fast bottom-up framework for multi-person 3D human pose estimation. We adopt a novel neural representation of multi-person 3D pose which unifies the position of person instances with their corresponding 3D pose representation. This is realized by learning a generative pose embedding which not only ensures plausible 3D pose predictions, but also eliminates the usual keypoint grouping operation as employed in prior bottom-up approaches. Further, we propose a practical deployment paradigm where paired 2D or 3D pose annotations are unavailable. In the absence of a…
We present a box-free bottom-up approach for the tasks of pose estimation and instance segmentation of people in multi-person images using an efficient single-shot model. The proposed PersonLab model tackles both semantic-level reasoning and object-part associations using part-based modeling. Our model employs a convolutional network which learns to detect individual keypoints and predict their relative displacements, allowing us to group keypoints into person pose instances. Further, we propose a part-induced geometric embedding descriptor which allows us to associate semantic person pixels w…
Multi-person human pose estimation and tracking in the wild is important and challenging. For training a powerful model, large-scale training data are crucial. While there are several datasets for human pose estimation, the best practice for training on multi-dataset has not been investigated. In this paper, we present a simple network called Multi-Domain Pose Network (MDPN) to address this problem. By treating the task as multi-domain learning, our methods can learn a better representation for pose prediction. Together with prediction heads fine-tuning and multi-branch combination, it shows s…
Remarkable progress has been made in 3D human pose estimation from a monocular RGB camera. However, only a few studies explored 3D multi-person cases. In this paper, we attempt to address the lack of a global perspective of the top-down approaches by introducing a novel form of supervision - Hierarchical Multi-person Ordinal Relations (HMOR). The HMOR encodes interaction information as the ordinal relations of depths and angles hierarchically, which captures the body-part and joint level semantic and maintains global consistency at the same time. In this paper, we propose efficient and effective methods for 2D human pose estimation. A new ResBlock is proposed based on depthwise separable convolution and is utilized instead of the original one in Hourglass network. It can be further enhanced by replacing the vanilla depthwise convolution with a mixed depthwise convolution. Based on it, we propose a bottom-up multi-person pose estimation method. A rooted tree is used to represent human pose by introducing person centroid as the root which connects to all body joints directly or hierarchically. Two branches of sub-networks are used to pre…

Recently, several deep learning models have been proposed for 3D human pose estimation. Nevertheless, most of these approaches only focus on the single-person case or estimate 3D pose of a few people at high resolution. Furthermore, many applications such as autonomous driving or crowd analysis require pose estimation of a large number of people possibly at low-resolution. In this work, we present PandaNet (Pose estimAtioN and Dectection Anchor-based Network), a new single-shot, anchor-based and multi-person 3D pose estimation approach. In 3D human pose estimation one of the biggest problems is the lack of large, diverse datasets. This is especially true for multi-person 3D pose estimation, where, to our knowledge, there are only machine generated annotations available for training. To mitigate this issue, we introduce a network that can be trained with additional RGB-D images in a weakly supervised fashion. Due to the existence of cheap sensors, videos with depth maps are widely available, and our method can exploit a large, unannotated dataset. Our algorithm is a monocular, multi-person, absolute pose estimator. We evaluate…

This paper studies the problem of multi-person pose estimation in a bottom-up fashion. With a new and strong observation that the localization issue of the center-offset formulation can be remedied in a local-window search scheme in an ideal situation, we propose a multi-person pose estimation approach, dubbed as LOGO-CAP, by learning the LOcal-GlObal Contextual Adaptation for human Pose. Specifically, our approach learns the keypoint attraction maps (KAMs) from the local keypoints expansion maps (KEMs) in small local windows in the first step, which are subsequently treated as dynamic convolu…
We propose an end-to-end architecture for joint 2D and 3D human pose estimation in natural images. Key to our approach is the generation and scoring of a number of pose proposals per image, which allows us to predict 2D and 3D poses of multiple people simultaneously. Hence, our approach does not require an approximate localization of the humans for initialization. Our Localization-Classification-Regression architecture, named LCR-Net, contains 3 main components: 1) the pose proposal generator that suggests candidate poses at different locations in the image; 2) a classifier that scores the dif…
Human pose-estimation in a multi-person image involves detection of various body parts and grouping them into individual person clusters. While the former task is challenging due to mutual occlusions, the combinatorial complexity of the latter task is very high. We propose a greedy part assignment algorithm that exploits the inherent structure of the human body to achieve a lower complexity, compared to any of the prior published works. This is accomplished by (i) reducing the number of part-candidates using the estimated number of people in the image, (ii) doing a greedy sequential assignment…

The task of multi-person human pose estimation in natural scenes is quite challenging. Existing methods include both top-down and bottom-up approaches. The main advantage of bottom-up methods is its excellent tradeoff between estimation accuracy and computational cost. We follow this path and aim to design smaller, faster, and more accurate neural networks for the regression of keypoints and limb association vectors. These two regression tasks are naturally dependent on each other. In this work, we propose a dual-path network specially designed for multi-person human pose estimation, and compa…

This paper considers the task of articulated human pose estimation of multiple people in real world images. We propose an approach that jointly solves the tasks of detection and pose estimation: it infers the number of persons in a scene, identifies occluded body parts, and disambiguates body parts between people in close proximity of each other. This joint formulation is in contrast to previous strategies, that address the problem by first detecting people and subsequently estimating their body pose. We propose a partitioning and labeling formulation of a set of body-part hypotheses generated…
We propose a deep learning method to automatically detect personal protective equipment (PPE), such as helmets, surgical masks, reflective vests, boots and so on, in images of people. Typical approaches for PPE detection based on deep learning are (i) to train an object detector for items such as those listed above or (ii) to train a person detector and a classifier that takes the bounding boxes predicted by the detector and discriminates between people wearing and people not wearing the corresponding PPE items. We propose a novel and accurate approach that uses three components: a person dete…

Epipolar constraints are at the core of feature matching and depth estimation in current multi-person multi-camera 3D human pose estimation methods. Despite the satisfactory performance of this formulation in sparser crowd scenes, its effectiveness is frequently challenged under denser crowd circumstances mainly due to two sources of ambiguity. The first is the mismatch of human joints resulting from the simple cues provided by the Euclidean distances between joints and epipolar lines. The second is the lack of robustness from the naive formulation of the problem as a least squares minimizatio…

The model jointly learns to locate the human joints in the image, to estimate their 3D coordinates and to group these predictions into full human skeletons. The proposed method deals with a variable number of people and does not need bounding boxes to estimate the 3D poses. It leverages and extends the Stacked Hourglass Network and its multi-scale feature learning to manage multi-person situations. Thus, we exploit a robust 3D human pose formulation to fully describe several 3D human…

In keypoint estimation tasks such as human pose estimation, heatmap-based regression is the dominant approach despite possessing notable drawbacks: heatmaps intrinsically suffer from quantization error and require excessive computation to generate and post-process. Motivated to find a more efficient solution, we propose to model individual keypoints and sets of spatially related keypoints (i.e., poses) as objects within a dense single-stage anchor-based detection framework. Hence, we call our method KAPAO (pronounced "Ka-Pow"), for Keypoints And Poses As Objects. KAPAO is applied to the proble…

We address the person re-identification problem by effectively exploiting a globally discriminative feature representation from a sequence of tracked human regions/patches. This is in contrast to previous person re-id works, which rely on either single frame based person to person patch matching, or graph based sequence to sequence matching. We show that a progressive/sequential fusion framework based on long short term memory (LSTM) network aggregates the frame-wise human region representation at each time stamp and yields a sequence level human feature representation. We address the challenging task of video-based person re-identification. Recent works have shown that splitting the video sequences into clips and then aggregating clip based similarity is appropriate for the task. We show that using a learned clip similarity aggregation function allows filtering out hard clip pairs, e.g. where the person is not clearly visible, is in a challenging pose, or where the poses in the two clips are too different to be informative. This allows the method to focus on clip-pairs which are more informative for the task. We also introduce the use of 3D CNNs for video-ba…

Existing person re-identification (Re-ID) methods mostly follow a centralised learning paradigm which shares all training data to a collection for model learning.
