A new x-ray amplification mechanism is considered in an interaction between a x-ray and an intense visible-light laser in a plasma. In normal circumstances, the x-ray amplification from this type of the physical processes is implausible because its phase, which is the \textbf{non-resonant} perturbation, is not suitable for transferring the energy from the visible light laser to the x-ray. As proposed in this paper, this undesirable phase can be manipulated into the desirable one. Two situations are considered. The first case is in the presence of the strong plasma density gradient. A lasting amplification is possible when a strong Langmuir wave, whose phase velocity matches with the x-ray group velocity, provides the density gradient along the way of the x-ray propagation.
The second case is in the presence of a pre-excited Langmuir wave. The author considers two lasers, with their frequency differing by the Langmuir wave, counter-propagating and exciting a rather strong Langmuir wave. In the presence of the mentioned Langmuir wave, it is demonstrated that the ponderomotive interaction between the x-ray and one of the lasers excites the plasma density perturbation with a desired phase, resulting to amplify (decay) the x-ray (visible light laser). The condition for achieving the mentioned favorable phase and the amplification strength, when the condition is met, is estimated. The amplification strength is quite high, where the gain per length could reach 1000 per cm in both cases.
Strong amplification in integrated photonics is one of the most desired optical functionalities for computing, communications, sensing, and quantum information processing. Semiconductor gain and cubic nonlinearities, such as four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, have been among the most studied amplification mechanisms on chip. Alternatively, material platforms with strong quadratic nonlinearities promise numerous advantages with respect to gain and bandwidth, among which nanophotonic lithium niobate is one of the most promising candidates. Here, we combine quasi-phas…

The impact of twisted light is widening as recent numerical calculations provided solutions to long-standing challenges in plasma-based acceleration by allowing for high gradient positron acceleration. We demonstrate a simple method to obtain accurate optical waveforms with a GHz-level programmable modulation bandwidth and Watt-level output power for wideband optical control of free atoms and molecules. Arbitrary amplitude and phase modulations are transferred from microwave to light with a low-power fiber electro-optical modulator. The sub-milliWatt optical sideband is co-amplified with the optical carrier in a power-balanced fashion through a tapered semiconductor amplifier (TSA). By automatically keeping TSA near saturation in a quasi-continuous manner, typical noise channels associated w…
Plasmas may be used as gain media for amplifying intense lasers, and external magnetic fields may be applied to improve the performance. For mid-infrared lasers, the requisite magnetic field is on megagauss scale, which can already be provided by current technologies. Designing the laser amplifier requires knowing the magnetized three-wave coupling coefficient, which is mapped out systematically in this paper. By numerically evaluating its formula, we demonstrate how the coupling depends on angle of wave propagation, laser polarization, magnetic field strength, plasma temperature, and plasma d…
Compression of an intense laser pulse using backward Raman amplification (BRA) in plasma, followed by vacuum focusing to a small spot size, can produce unprecedented ultrarelativistic laser intensities. The plasma density inhomogeneity during BRA, however, causes laser phase and amplitude distortions, limiting the pulse focusability. To solve the issue of distortion, we investigate the use of optical phase conjugation as the seed pulse for BRA. We show that the phase conjugated laser pulses can retain focusability in the nonlinear pump-depletion regime of BRA, but not so easily in the linear a…
Light can be used to modify and control properties of media, as in the case of electromagnetically induced transparency or, more recently, for the generation of slow light or bright coherent XUV and X-ray radiation. Particularly unusual states of matter can be created by light fields with strengths comparable to the Coulomb field that binds valence electrons in atoms, leading to nearly-free electrons oscillating in the laser field and yet still loosely bound to the core [1,2]. These are known as Kramers-Henneberger states [3], a specific example of laser-dressed states [2]. Here, we demonstrat…
Generation of free-space laser-like emissions of high spatiotemporal coherence and narrow bandwidth in atmosphere opens promising opportunities for remote spectroscopic sensing. Here, we report on generation of such laser-like emissions, which results from the combined contributions of perturbative and non-perturbative nonlinear optical effects in nitrogen molecules exposed to intense mid-infrared laser fields. We systematically investigate the dependence of the generated free-space laser spectrum on wavelength and power of the driver laser. It is revealed that the free-space laser is produced…
Absorption induced transparency is an optical phenomenon that occurs in metallic arrays of nanoholes when materials featuring narrow lines in their absorption spectra are deposited on top of it. First reported in the visible range, using dye lasers as cover materials, it has been described as transmission peaks unexpectedly close to the absorption energies of the dye laser. In this work, amplification of light is demonstrated in the active regime of absorption induced transparency. Amplification of stimulated emission can be achieved when the dye laser behaves as a gain material. Intense illum…
Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power ef…
In standard lasers, light amplification requires population inversion between an upper and a lower state to break the reciprocity between absorption and stimulated emission. However, in a medium prepared in a specific superposition state, quantum interference may fully suppress absorption while leaving stimulated emission intact, opening the possibility of lasing without inversion. Here we show that lasing without inversion arises naturally during propagation of intense femtosecond laser pulses in air. It is triggered by the combination of molecular ionization and molecular alignment, both una…
Two dimensional particle-in-cell simulations characterizing the interaction of ultraintense short pulse lasers in the range 10^{18} \leq I \leq 10^{20} W/cm^{2} with converging target geometries are presented. Seeking to examine intensity amplification in high-power laser systems, where focal spots are typically non-diffraction limited, we describe key dynamical features as the injected laser intensity and convergence angle of the target are systematically varied. We find that laser pulses are focused down to a wavelength with the peak intensity amplified by an order of magnitude beyond its va…
A scheme of soft x-ray lasers is proposed. The backward Raman scattering between an intense visible-light laser and a relativistic electron beam results in sofr x-ray via the Doppler shift. One of the most intense soft x-ray light sources is contemplated.
Solitons are of fundamental importance in photonics due to applications in optical data transmission and also as a tool for investigating novel phenomena ranging from light generation at new frequencies and wave-trapping to rogue waves. Solitons are also relativistic scatterers: they generate refractive-index perturbations moving at the speed of light. Here we found that such perturbations scatter light in an unusual way: they amplify light by the mixing of positive and negative frequencies, as we describe using a first Born approximation and numerical simulations. The simplest scenario in whi…
Parametric amplification of attosecond coherent pulses around 100 eV at the single-atom level is demonstrated for the first time by using the 3D time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation in high-harmonic generation processes from excited states of He$^+$. We present the attosecond dynamics of the amplification process far from the ionization threshold and resolve the physics behind it. The amplification of a particular central photon energy requires the seed XUV pulses to be perfectly synchronized in time with the driving laser field for stimulated recombination to the He$^+$ ground state and is o…
We report optical parametric amplification (OPA) of low-frequency infrared pulses in the intermediate region between terahertz (THz) frequency and mid-infrared (MIR), i.e., from 16.9 to 44.8 THz. The 255-fs laser output of the Yb:KGW regenerative amplifier is compressed to 11-fs pulses using a multi-plate broadening scheme, which generates THz-to-MIR pulses with a spectrum extending to approximately 50 THz by intra-p1ulse differential frequency generation (DFG) in GaSe. The THz-to-MIR pulses are further amplified using a two-stage OPA in GaSe. The temporal dynamics and photocarrier effects dur…
Generation of laser-like narrow bandwidth emissions from nitrogen molecular ions generated in intense near- and mid-infrared femtosecond laser fields has aroused much interest because of the mysterious physics underlying such a phenomenon as well as the potential application of such an effect in atmospheric spectroscopic sensing. Here, we perform a pump-probe measurement on the nonlinear interaction of rotational quantum wavepackets of nitrogen molecular ions generated in mid-infrared (e.g., at a wavelength centered at 1580 nm) femtosecond laser fields with an ultrashort probe pulse whose broa…
Lasers that generate ultra-intense light pulses are under development for experiments in high-field and high-energy-density physics, as well as for applications such as particle acceleration. Extensions to even higher powers are being considered for future investigations that can only be imagined today, such as the quantum electrodynamics of plasmas and isolated attosecond-pulse generation with solid targets. For all of these areas, it is vital to produce high-contrast pulses, so that no pre-plasma is created in the target before the arrival of the main pulse. However, noise is unavoidable in …
Optical frequency combs based on mode-locked lasers have revolutionised the field of metrology and precision spectroscopy by providing precisely calibrated optical frequencies and coherent pulse trains. Amplification of the pulsed output from these lasers is very desirable, as nonlinear processes can then be employed to cover a much wider range of transitions and wavelengths for ultra-high precision, direct frequency comb spectroscopy. Therefore full repetition rate laser amplifiers and enhancement resonators have been employed to produce up to microjoule-level pulse energies. Here we show tha…
The bottleneck for an attosecond science experiment is concluded to be the lack of a high-peak-power isolated attosecond pulse source. Therefore, currently, generating an intense attosecond pulse would be one of the highest priority goals. In this paper, we review a TW-class parallel three-channel waveform synthesizer for generating a gigawatt-scale soft-x-ray isolated attosecond pulse (IAP) using high-order harmonics generation (HHG). Simultaneously, using several stabilization methods, namely, the low-repetition-rate laser carrier-envelope phase stabilization, Mach-Zehnder interferometer, ba…
Photonic band gaps for the soft x-rays, formed in the periodic structures of solids or dense plasmas, are theoretically investigated. Optical manipulation mechanisms for the soft x-rays, which are based on these band gaps, are computationally demonstrated. The reflection and amplification of the soft x-rays, and the compression and stretching of chirped soft x-ray pulses are discussed. A scheme for lasing with atoms with two energy levels, utilizing the band gap, is also studied.
Laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) provide an additional degree of freedom and have found wide applications ranging from optical communications and optical manipulation to quantum information. The efficient generation and operation of ultra-intense OAM beams is a big challenge that has to be met, currently setting a limit to the potential applications of ultra-intense OAM beams in high-energy-density physics studies. Here, we theoretically and numerically demonstrate for the first time that a pump beam with a new OAM state is generated by coupling of the seed pulse with OAM La…
We report on the observation of backward lasing at 391.4 nm of nitrogen ions pumped by linearly polarized intense femtosecond pulses at 800 nm. The strongly enhanced spectral intensity at 391.4 nm, as well as the amplification of an externally injected backward seeding pulse, confirm that the backward 391.4 nm signal is due to optical amplification in the gas plasma. Compared to the forward emission at 391.4 nm, the optimal backward emission is achieved at a lower gas pressure around 10 mbar, which is due to asymmetry of the backward and forward directions rooted in the traveling excitation ge…

The number of photons available by coherent X-ray scattering from a single biomolecule is considerably less because of the extremely small elastic-scattering cross-section and low damage threshold. Even with a high X-ray flux of 3 x 10to 12 photons per 100-nm-diameter spot and an ultrashort pulse of 10 fs driven by a future X-ray free electron laser (X-ray FEL), it has been predicted that only a few 100 photons will be available by scattering from a single lysozyme molecule. In this paper I propose a new method: instead of directly observing the photons scattered from the sample, we amplify th…
A scheme for an X-ray free electron laser is proposed, based on a Raman process occurring during the interaction between a moderately relativistic bunch of free electrons, and twin intense short pulse lasers interfering to form a transverse standing wave along the electron trajectories. In the high intensity regime of the Kapitza-Dirac effect, the laser ponderomotive potential forces the electrons into a lateral oscillatory motion, resulting in a Raman scattering process. I show how a parametric process is triggered, resulting in the amplification of the Stokes component of the Raman-scattered…
A scheme of soft-xray radiation is proposed. In the scheme, a moderately intense laser excites plasmons via the two-plasmon decay in a relativistic electron beam. As the second laser encounters the electron beam in the opposite direction, it emits soft x-rays via the backward Raman scattering. Our analysis suggests that the effective cross-section of this scattering is higher than the Thomson scattering and that the conversion efficiency from the pump laser to the soft x-ray could be very high in the optimal scenario. USing the plasmon pump with duration of 1-100 pico-second and the electron b…
Second-order nonlinear optical interactions, including second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG), can reveal a wealth of information about chemical, electronic, and vibrational dynamics at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate a powerful and flexible new approach, called phase-modulated degenerate parametric amplification (DPA). The technique, which allows for facile retrieval of both the amplitude and phase of the second-order nonlinear optical response, has many advantages over conventional or heterodyne-detected SHG, including the flexibility to detect the signal at …
We report an original method allowing to recover the temporal profile of any kind of soft X-ray laser pulse in single-shot operation. We irradiated a soft X-ray multilayer mirror with an intense infrared femtosecond laser pulse in a traveling wave geometry and took advantage of the sudden reflectivity drop of the mirror to reconstruct the temporal profile of the soft X-ray pulse. We inferred a pulse shape with a duration of a few ps in good agreement with numerical calculations and experimental work.
We propose an effective scheme for the generation of intense coherent extreme ultraviolet light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). The light is produced by a high-gain harmonic-generation free-electron laser (FEL), seeded using a laser pulse with a transverse staircase-like phase pattern. During amplification, diffraction and mode selection drive the radiation profile towards a dominant OAM mode at saturation. With a seed laser at 260 nm, gigawatt power levels are obtained at wavelengths approaching those of soft x-rays. Compared to other proposed schemes to generate OAM with FELs,…
We develop a model for simulating the heat transfer phenomena within a biological soft material using the Ikeda chaotic map. Our approach is implemented by sampling the optical intensity via the Ikeda map to investigate the influence on the heat distribution over the tissue. Our method has many potential advantages including the possibility of investigating the nonlinear optical effects resulting from the intense beam-induced feedback mechanisms. This in turn, leads to the flexibility and dynamical controllability in comparison to the quasi-static Monte-Carlo method. The proposed approach is t…
Quantum electrodynamics predicts that the vacuum must behave as a nonlinear optical medium: the speed of light should be modified when the vacuum is stressed by intense electromagnetic fields. This optical phenomenon has not yet been observed. The DeLLight (Deflection of Light by Light) experiment aims to observe the optically-induced index change of vacuum, a nonlinear effect which has never been explored. The experiment is installed in the LASERIX facility at IJCLab, which delivers ultra-short intense laser pulses (2.5 J per pulse, each of 30 fs duration, with a 10 Hz repetition rate). The p…
The spectroscopic techniques for time-resolved fine analysis of matter require coherent X-ray radiation with femtosecond duration and high average brightness. Seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), which use the frequency up-conversion of an external seed laser to improve temporal coherence, are ideal for providing fully coherent soft X-ray pulses. However, it is difficult to operate seeded FELs at a high repetition rate due to the limitations of present state-of-the-art laser systems. Here, we report the novel self-modulation method for enhancing laser-induced energy modulation, thereby signific…
X-ray beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are an emerging tool for probing matter. Optical elements, such as spiral phase plates and zone plates, have been widely used to generate OAM light. However, these optics are challenging to use at x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) due to the high impinging intensities. Here, we propose a self-seeded FEL method to produce intense x-ray vortices. Unlike passive filtering after amplification, an optical element will be used to introduce the helical phase in the linear regime, significantly reducing the thermal load on the optical element. The g…
