Compression of an intense laser pulse using backward Raman amplification (BRA) in plasma, followed by vacuum focusing to a small spot size, can produce unprecedented ultrarelativistic laser intensities. The plasma density inhomogeneity during BRA, however, causes laser phase and amplitude distortions, limiting the pulse focusability. To solve the issue of distortion, we investigate the use of optical phase conjugation as the seed pulse for BRA. We show that the phase conjugated laser pulses can retain focusability in the nonlinear pump-depletion regime of BRA, but not so easily in the linear amplification regime. This somewhat counter-intuitive result is because the nonlinear pump-depletion regime features a shorter amplification distance, and hence less phase distortion due to wave-wave interaction, than the linear amplification regime.
The wealth of work in backward Raman amplification in plasma has focused on the extreme intensity limit, however backward Raman amplification may also provide an effective and practical mechanism for generating intense, broad bandwidth, long-wavelength infrared radiation (LWIR). An electromagnetic simulation coupled with a relativistic cold fluid plasma model is used to demonstrate the generation of picosecond pulses at a wavelength of 10 microns with terawatt powers through backward Raman amplification. The effects of collisional damping, Landau damping, pump depletion, and wave breaking are …
Higher intensity of strong-coupling stimulated Brillouin scattering (SC-SBS) amplification is achieved by supplementary Raman amplification. In the new scheme, a Raman pump laser first amplifies the seed pulse in the homogeneous plasma, then a SC-SBS pump laser continues the amplification in the inhomogeneous plasma in order to suppress the spontaneous instability of pump lasers. The intensity of seed laser gets higher and the duration of seed laser gets shorter than that in the pure SC-SBS scheme with the same incident energy, while the energy conversion effciency is not significantly reduced…
A THz light amplifier and the corresponding methods are proposed, based on the Raman interaction between a THz light and visible light lasers. Two lasers, with their frequencies differing by that of a Langmuir wave, counter-propagate inside a background plasma, exciting a rather strong Langmuir wave. The THz light amplification occurs through the non-resonant Raman scattering between the THz light and one of the lasers in the presence of the mentioned Langmuir wave. It is normally the case that the non-resonant scattering does not exchange the energy between E \&M fields but the author demonst…
Spatially combining multiple strong laser beams is a promising concept for achieving ultrahigh laser intensities. Proof-of-principle experiments have been conducted at the National Ignition Facility to report a combination of up to twenty pulses with high energy conversion efficiency. However, the combination process might damage the seed focusability due to mismatch of the seed and pump wavefronts. Here, we investigate the effect of the finite pump beam size on the focusability of the seed pulse. We propose an approach to retain and even improve the seed focusability by specifically arranging…
Raman and Brillouin amplification of laser pulses in plasma have been shown to produce picosecond pulses of petawatt power. In previous studies, filamentation of the probe pulse has been identified as the biggest threat to the amplification process, especially for Brillouin amplification, which employs the highest plasma densities. Therefore it has been proposed to perform Brillouin scattering at densities below $n_{cr}/4$ to reduce the influence of filamentation. However, parastic Raman scattering can become a problem at such densities, contrary to densities above $n_{cr}/4$, where it is supp…
In plasma-based backward Raman amplifiers, the output pulse intensity increases with the input pump pulse intensity, as long as the Langmuir wave mediating energy transfer from the pump to the seed pulse remains intact. However, at high pump intensity, the Langmuir wave breaks, at which point the amplification efficiency may no longer increase with the pump intensity. Numerical simulations presented here, employing a 1D Vlasov-Maxwell code, show that, although the amplification efficiency remains high when the pump only mildly exceeds the wavebreaking threshold, the efficiency drops precipitou…
Raman and Brillouin amplification are two schemes for amplifying and compressing short laser pulses in plasma. Analytical models have already been derived for both schemes, but the full consequences of these models are little known or used. Here, we present new criteria that govern the evolution of the attractor solution for the seed pulse in Raman and Brillouin amplification, and show how the initial laser pulses need to be shaped to control the properties of the final amplified seed and improve the amplification efficiency.
In regimes far beyond the wavebreaking threshold of Raman amplification, we show that significant amplifcation can occur after the onset of wavebreaking, before phase mixing destroys the coherent coupling between pump, probe and plasma wave. Amplification in this regime is therefore a transient effect, with the higher-efficiency "coherent wavebreaking" (CWB) regime accessed by using a short, intense probe. Parameter scans illustrate the marked difference in behaviour between below wavebreaking, in which the energy-transfer efficiency is high but total energy transfer is low, wavebreaking, in w…
Twisted Laguerre-Gaussian lasers, with orbital angular momentum and characterised by doughnut shaped intensity profiles, provide a transformative set of tools and research directions in a growing range of fields and applications, from super-resolution microcopy and ultra-fast optical communications to quantum computing and astrophysics. The impact of twisted light is widening as recent numerical calculations provided solutions to long-standing challenges in plasma-based acceleration by allowing for high gradient positron acceleration. The production of ultrahigh intensity twisted laser pulses …
Raman amplification of a short laser pulse off a long laser beam has been demonstrated successfully for moderate probe intensities ($\sim 10^{16}$ W/cm$^2$) and widths ($\sim 50$ micron). However, truly competitive intensities can only be reached if the amplification process is carried out at much higher probe intensities ($10^{17}-10^{18}$ W/cm$^2$ after amplification) and widths (1-10 mm). In this paper we examine the opportunities and challenges provided by this regime through the first 2-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations using wide pulses. A parameter window is identified in which a…
Raman amplification in plasma has been promoted as a means of compressing picosecond optical laser pulses to femtosecond duration to explore the intensity frontier. Here we show for the first time that it can be used, with equal success, to compress laser pulses from nanosecond to picosecond duration. Simulations show up to 60% energy transfer from pump to probe pulses, implying that multi-kiloJoule ultra-violet petawatt laser pulses can be produced using this scheme. This has important consequences for the demonstration of fast-ignition inertial confinement fusion.
We propose to amplify and compress an ultrashort Light Spring laser seed with a long Gaussian-shaped laser pump through Raman amplification. This Light Spring, which has a helical spatio-temporal intensity profile, can be built on the superposition of three distinct laser frequency components. In order to get an independent frequency amplification, two criteria are established. Besides these criteria, a non equal frequency separation is necessary to avoid resonance overlapping when three or more frequencies are involved. The independent set of equations, which describes the wave-wave interacti…
We demonstrate that a mm-scale free electron laser can operate in the X-ray range, in the interaction between a moderately relativistic electron bunch, and a transverse high intensity optical lattice. The corrugated light-induced ponderomotive potential acts simultaneously as a guide and as a low-frequency wiggler, triggering stimulated Raman scattering. The gain law in the small signal regime is derived in a fluid approach, and confirmed from Particle-In-Cell simulations. We describe the nature of bunching, and discuss the saturation properties. The resulting all-optical Raman X-ray laser ope…
We present a scheme for amplifying an extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) seed isolated attosecond pulse via stimulated Raman scattering of a pulse-train pump. At sufficient seed and pump intensity, the amplification is nonlinear, and the amplitude of the seed pulse can reach that of the pump, one order of magnitude higher than the initial seed amplitude. In the linear amplification regime, we find that the spectral signature of the pump pulse train is imprinted on the spectrum of the amplified seed pulse. Since the spectral signature is imprinted with its frequency downshifted by the plasma frequency, …

Stimulated Raman backscattering (RBS) of intense laser radiation confined by a single-mode plasma channel with a radial variation of plasma frequency greater than a homogeneous-plasma RBS bandwidth is characterized by a strong transverse localization of resonantly-driven electron plasma waves (EPW). The EPW localization reduces the peak growth rate of RBS and increases the amplification bandwidth. The continuum of non-bound modes of backscattered radiation shrinks the transverse field profile in a channel and increases the RBS growth rate. Solution of the initial-value problem shows that an el…
It is shown here that Brillouin amplification can be used to produce picosecond pulses of petawatt power. Brillouin amplification is far more resilient to fluctuations in the laser and plasma parameters than Raman amplification, making it an attractive alternative to Raman amplification. Through analytic theory and multi-dimensional computer simulations, a novel, well-defined parameter regime has been found, distinct from that of Raman amplification, where pump-to-probe compression ratios of up to 100 and peak laser fluences over 1 kJ/cm$^2$ with 30\% efficiency have been achieved. High pulse …
Experimentally observed decay rate of the long wavelength Langmuir wave in metals and dense plasmas is orders of magnitude larger than the prediction of the prevalent Landau damping theory. The discrepancy is explored, and the existence of a regime where the forward Raman scattering is stable and the backward Raman scattering is unstable is examined. The amplification of an x-ray pulse in this regime, via the backward Raman compression, is computationally demonstrated, and the optimal pulse duration and intensity is estimated.
In its usual implementation, the Raman amplifier features only one pump carrier frequency. However, pulses with well-separated frequencies can also be Raman amplified while compressed in time. Amplification with frequency-separated pumps is shown to hold even in the highly nonlinear, pump-depletion regime, as derived through a fluid model, and demonstrated via particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The resulting efficiency is similar to single-frequency amplifiers, but, due to the beat-wave waveform of both the pump lasers and the amplified seed pulses, these amplifiers feature higher seed intens…
A novel regime of self-compression is proposed for plasma-based backward Raman amplification(BRA) upon flying focus. By using a pumping focus moving with a speed equal to the group velocity of stimulated Raman backscattering(SRBS), only a short part of SRBS which does always synchronize with the flying focus can be amplified. Due to the asymmetrical amplification, the pulse can be directly compressed in the linear stage of BRA. Therefore, instead of a short pulse, the Raman spontaneous or a long pulse can seed the BRA amplifiers. The regime is supported by the 2D particle-in-cell(PIC) simulati…
We examine the feasibility of strongly-coupled stimulated Brillouin scattering as a mechanism for the plasma-based amplification of sub-picosecond pulses. In particular, we use fluid theory and particle-in-cell simulations to compare the relative advantages of Raman and Brillouin amplification over a broad range of achievable parameters.
A new mechanism for the THz light amplification is identified ina non-resonant Raman scattering between the THz light and a visible light lasers. The non-resonant scattering normally does not exchange the energy between E \&M fields, but the presence of the plasma density gradientcreates an condition in which a visible light laser could transfer its energy into a tera-hertz (THz) light via the laser-plasma interaction. The gain per length could reach 100 (1000) per centimeter for the THz light (far infra-red light) amplification.
We perform 1D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations using OSIRIS, which model a short-duration (~500/ω0 FWHM) scattered light seed pulse in the presence of a constant counter-propagating pump laser with an intensity far below the absolute instability threshold. The seed undergoes linear convective Raman amplification and dominates over fluctuations due to particle discreteness. Our simulation results are in good agreement with results from a coupled mode solver when we take into account special relativity and the use of finite size PIC simulation particles. We present linear gain spectra includin…
Plasma-based parametric amplification using stimulated Brillouin scattering offers a route to coherent x-ray pulses orders-of-magnitude more intense than those of the brightest available sources. Brillouin amplification permits amplification of shorter wavelengths with lower pump intensities than Raman amplification, which Landau and collisional damping limit in the x-ray regime. Analytic predictions, numerical solutions of the three-wave coupling equations, and particle-in-cell simulations suggest that Brillouin amplification in solid-density plasmas will allow compression of current x-ray fr…
Backward Raman amplification of laser pulses in plasmas can produce nearly relativistic unfocused output intensities and multi-exawatt powers in compact devices. The largest achievable intensity depends on which of major competitive processes sets this limit. It is shown here that the relativistic electron nonlinearity can cause saturation of the leading amplified spike intensity before filamentation instabilities develop. A simple analytical model for the saturation, which supports numerical simulations, is suggested. The upper limit for the leading output spike unfocused intensity is calcula…
Backward Raman amplification is limited by relativistic nonlinear dephasing resulting in saturation of the leading spike of the amplified pulse. Pump detuning is employed to mitigate the relativistic phase mismatch and to overcome the associated saturation. The amplified pulse can then be reshaped into a mono-spike pulse with little precursory power ahead of it, with the maximum intensity increasing by a factor of two. This detuning can be employed advantageously both in regimes where the group velocity dispersion is unimportant and where the dispersion is important but small.
Plasmas may be used as gain media for amplifying intense lasers, and external magnetic fields may be applied to improve the performance. For mid-infrared lasers, the requisite magnetic field is on megagauss scale, which can already be provided by current technologies. Designing the laser amplifier requires knowing the magnetized three-wave coupling coefficient, which is mapped out systematically in this paper. By numerically evaluating its formula, we demonstrate how the coupling depends on angle of wave propagation, laser polarization, magnetic field strength, plasma temperature, and plasma d…
The leading amplified spike in backward Raman amplifiers can reach nearly relativistic intensities before the saturation by the relativistic electron nonlinearity, which sets an upper limit to the largest achievable leading spike intensity. It is shown here that this limit can be substantially exceeded by the initially sub-dominant spikes, which surprisingly outgrow the leading spike after its nonlinear saturation. Furthermore, an initially negligible group velocity of the amplified pulse in strongly under-critical plasma appears to be capable of delaying the filamentation instability in the n…
A new amplification method, weaving the three basic compression techniques, Chirped Pulse Amplification (CPA), Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplification (OPCPA) and Plasma Compression by Backward Raman Amplification (BRA) in plasma, is proposed. It is called C3 for Cascaded Conversion Compression. It has the capability to compress with good efficiency kilojoule to megajoule, nanosecond laser pulses into femtosecond pulses, to produce exawatt and beyond peak power. In the future, C3 could be used at large-scale facilities such as the National Ignition Facility (NIF) or the Laser Megajoule …
Laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) provide an additional degree of freedom and have found wide applications ranging from optical communications and optical manipulation to quantum information. The efficient generation and operation of ultra-intense OAM beams is a big challenge that has to be met, currently setting a limit to the potential applications of ultra-intense OAM beams in high-energy-density physics studies. Here, we theoretically and numerically demonstrate for the first time that a pump beam with a new OAM state is generated by coupling of the seed pulse with OAM La…
We consider backscattering of laser pulses in strongly-magnetized plasma mediated by kinetic magnetohydrodynamic waves. Magnetized low-frequency scattering, which can occur when the external magnetic field is neither perpendicular nor parallel to the laser propagation direction, provides an instability growth rate higher than Raman scattering and a frequency downshift comparable to Brillouin scattering. In addition to the high growth rate, which allows smaller plasmas, and the 0.1-2\% frequency downshift, which permits a wide range of pump sources, MLF scattering is an ideal candidate for ampl…
Laser plasma amplification of sub-picosecond pulses above the Joule level is demonstrated, a major milestone for this scheme to become a solution for the next-generation of ultra-high intensity lasers. By exploring over 6 orders of magnitude the influence of the incident seed intensity on Brillouin laser amplification, we reveal the importance of a minimum intensity to ensure an early onset of the self-similar regime, and a large energy transfer with a very high efficiency, up to 20%. Evidence of energy losses of the seed by spontaneous backward Raman is found at high amplification. The first …
A 1D, steady-state model for Brillouin and Raman backscatter from an inhomogeneous plasma is presented. The daughter plasma waves are treated in the strong damping limit, and have amplitudes given by the (linear) kinetic response to the ponderomotive drive. Pump depletion, inverse-bremsstrahlung damping, bremsstrahlung emission, Thomson scattering off density fluctuations, and whole-beam focusing are included. The numerical code DEPLETE, which implements this model, is described. The model is compared with traditional linear gain calculations, as well as "plane-wave" simulations with the parax…
Two color laser pulses are used to form an air plasma and generate broadband infrared radiation suitable as a seed for backward Raman amplification of CO2 laser pulses. Broadband radiation in the atmospheric window from 8-14 microns is observed. The infrared radiation is characterized using a long wavelength grating spectrometer specially designed to accept an ionizing laser filament at its input plane. The LWIR yield is greatly enhanced by chirping the drive pulse. Unidirectional pulse propagation simulations suggest that this is due in part to the dependence of the nonlinear refractive index…
