Hybrid numerical-experimental testing is a standard approach for complex dynamical structures that are, on the one hand, not easy to model due to complexity and parameter uncertainty and, on the other hand, too expensive for full-scale experiments. The main idea is to subdivide the structure in a part that can be accurately simulated with numerical methods and an experimental component. The numerical simulation and the experiment are coupled in real-time by a so-called transfer system, which induces a time-delay into the system. In this paper, we study the solvability of the resulting hybrid numerical-experimental system, which is typically described by a set of nonlinear delay differential-algebraic equations, and extend existing results from the literature to this case.
We study the set of $T$-periodic solutions of a class of $T$-periodically perturbed Differential-Algebraic Equations, allowing the perturbation to contain a distributed and possibly infinite delay. Under suitable assumptions, the perturbed equations are equivalent to Retarded Functional (Ordinary) Differential Equations on a manifold. Our study is based on known results about the latter class of equations.
We develop a global Hopf bifurcation theory for differential equations with a state-dependent delay governed by an algebraic equation, using the $S^1$-equivariant degree. We apply the global Hopf bifurcation theory to a model of genetic regulatory dynamics with threshold type state-dependent delay vanishing at the stationary state, for a description of the global continuation of the periodic oscillations.
This paper analyzes the eigenvalue distribution of neutral differential systems and the corresponding difference systems, and establishes the relationship between the eigenvalue distribution and delay-independent stability of neutral differential systems. By using the ``Complete Discrimination System for Polynomials", easily testable necessary and sufficient algebraic criteria for delay-independent stability of a class of neutral differential systems are established. The algebraic criteria generalize and unify the relevant results in the literature. Moreover, the maximal delay bound guaranteei…
The propagation of primary discontinuities in initial value problems for linear delay differential-algebraic equations (DDAEs) is discussed. Based on the (quasi-) Weierstraß form for regular matrix pencil, a complete characterization of the different propagation types is given and algebraic criteria in terms of the matrices are developed. The analysis, which is based on the method of steps, takes into account all possible inhomogeneities and history functions and thus serves as the worst-case scenario. Moreover, it reveals possible hidden delays in the DDAE. The new classification for DDAEs is…
The solvability and stability analysis of linear time invariant systems of delay differential-algebraic equations (DDAEs) is analyzed. The behavior approach is applied to DDAEs in order to establish characterizations of their solvability in terms of spectral conditions. Furthermore, examples are delivered to demonstrate that the eigenvalue-based approach to analyze the exponential stability of dynamical system is only valid for a special class of DDAEs, namely non-advanced. Then, a new concept of weak stability is proposed and studied for DDAEs whose matrix coefficients pairwise commute.
It has been observed in several recent works that, for some classes of linear time-delay systems, spectral values of maximal multiplicity are dominant, a property known as multiplicity-induced-dominancy (MID). This paper starts the investigation of whether MID holds for delay differential-algebraic systems by considering a single-delay system composed of two scalar equations. After motivating this problem and recalling some recent results for retarded delay differential equations, we prove that the MID property holds for the delay differential-algebraic system of interest and present some appl…
The Pantelides algorithm for delay differential-algebraic equations (DDAEs) is a method to structurally analyse such systems with the goal to detect which equations have to be differentiated or shifted to construct a solution. In this process, one has to detect implicit connections between equations in the shifting graph, making it necessary to check all possible connections. The problem of finding these efficiently remained unsolved so far. It is explored in further detail and a reformulation is introduced. Additionally, an algorithmic approach for its solution is presented.
We present a graph-theoretical approach that can detect which equations of a delay differential-algebraic equation (DDAE) need to be differentiated or shifted to construct a solution of the DDAE. Our approach exploits the observation that differentiation and shifting are very similar from a structural point of view, which allows us to generalize the Pantelides algorithm for differential-algebraic equations to the DDAE setting. The primary tool for the extension is the introduction of equivalence classes in the graph of the DDAE, which also allows us to derive a necessary and sufficient criteri…
This paper deals with traveling wavefronts for temporally delayed, spatially discrete reaction-diffusion equations. Using a combination of the weighted energy method and the Green function technique, we prove that all noncritical wavefronts are globally exponentially stable, and critical wavefronts are globally algebraically stable when the initial perturbations around the wavefront decay to zero exponentially near minus infinity regardless of the magnitude of time delay.
We introduce a framework for the description of a large class of delay-differential algebraic systems, in which we study three core problems: first we characterize abstractly the well-posedness of the initial-value problem, then we design a practical test for well-posedness based on a graph-theoretic representation of the system; finally, we provide a general stability criterion. We apply each of these results to a structure that commonly arises in the control of delay systems.
We consider a single theta neuron with delayed self-feedback in the form of a Dirac delta function in time. Because the dynamics of a theta neuron on its own can be solved explicitly -- it is either excitable or shows self-pulsations -- we are able to derive algebraic expressions for existence and stability of the periodic solutions that arise in the presence of feedback. These periodic solutions are characterized by one or more equally spaced pulses per delay interval, and there is an increasing amount of multistability with increasing delay time. We present a complete description of where th…
In computing the third order terms of the series of powers of the center manifold at an equilibrium point of a scalar delay differential equation, with a single constant delay $r>0,$ some problems occur at the term $w_{21}z^2\bar{z}.$ More precisely, in order to determine the values at 0, respectively $-r$ of the function $w_{21}(\,.\,),$ an algebraic system of equations must be solved. We show that the two equations are dependent, hence the system has an infinity of solutions. Then we show how we can overcome this lack of uniqueness and provide a formula for $w_{21}(0).$
This paper focuses on the derivation and simulation of mathematical models describing new plasma fraction in blood for patients undergoing simultaneous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and therapeutic plasma exchange. Models for plasma exchange with either veno-arterial or veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are considered. Two classes of models are derived for each case, one in the form of an algebraic delay equation and another in the form of a system of delay differential equations. In special cases, our models reduce to single compartment ones for plasma exchange that have b…
Periodic orbits and associated bifurcations of singularly perturbed state-dependent delay differential equations (DDEs) are studied when the profiles of the periodic orbits contain jump discontinuities in the singular limit. A definition of singular solution is introduced which is based on a continuous parametrisation of the possibly discontinuous limiting solution. This reduces the construction of the limiting profiles to an algebraic problem. A model two state-dependent delay differential equation is studied in detail and periodic singular solutions are constructed with one and two local max…
In this article, the phenomenon of delayed Hopf bifurcations (DHB) in reaction-diffusion PDEs is analyzed in the cubic Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a slowly-varying parameter. We use the classical asymptotic methods of stationary phase and steepest descents to show that solutions which approach the attracting quasi-steady state (QSS) before the Hopf bifurcation remain near that state for long times after the Hopf bifurcation and the QSS has become repelling. In the complex time plane, the phase function of the linear PDE has a saddle point, and the Stokes and anti-Stokes lines are cen…
